Following the great success of the Phil Beer concert last year, we are delighted to announce that Phil’s partner in “Show of Hands”, Steve Knightly will be appearing at the village hall on Friday 27th April (doors will open at 7.30).

Steve is the song writing force behind Show of Hands who are widely acclaimed as the finest acoustic roots duo in England with 3 sell out Royal Albert Hall concerts behind them and the award of the BBC Folk Award for their song – Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed. They also won the best duo award in the same year.

This should prove to be a highly successful concert with tickets going fast. If you want to get a taster of what Steve.’s music is like, log onto the band’s website where there are examples of the fine work that they produce – www.showofhands.co.uk BBC2s Mike Harding has described this Exeter based performer as “one of England’s greatest song writers” and MOJO wrote “Steve Knightley’s songs have developed such an edge it’s hard to deny them any longer”.

The following alert has been received by the local group: Alert Subject: Spare wheel thefts There appears to be a spate of vehicle crime where Ford Transit vans are specifically being targeted for their spare wheels which are located underneath the vehicle and the wire holding them in place can be cut. One BT worker who was spoken to didn‘t report the first one, however, a day later after having just been replaced, it was then stolen again and he then let the Police know.

However, when he went to replace it he was queuing with 10 other colleagues who had all been victims of this type of crime.

Most of the thefts are within the Sheffield and Rotherham areas.

A light-hearted but true tale of the present ‗bus service‘

Stood waiting down at Smithy Bridge, Is that a bus coming o‘er the ridge.

Quite often they are breaking down, It‘s hilly here, not flat like town.

We need a bus that will not feign, Climbing up as steep as Woodfall Lane.

Programmes for 2012 will be available at this meeting On Monday April 2nd will be a talk on ―Inn Signs & Their History & Origins‖ by Enid Vincent & Phil Lockwood On Saturday April 21st we will be having a stall at Sheffield & District Family History Fair in Norfolk Park Centre from 10.00am – 4pm On Monday May 21st we will be having an illustrated talk/ demonstration by Sheffield Woodturning Group On Sunday June 10th we will be having a stall in the village hall as part of Bradfield Craft Fair.

On Monday June 18th our speaker will be Ron Clayton who will be talking about ―Historical Books Relating to Sheffield‖.

On Monday July 2nd our speaker will be Frank Stones who will be giving a personal account of ―The Great Escape‖

BRADFIELD DVD We now have a DVD around Bradfield available at £3-00 per copy and it is the original cine film taken by George Gaisford of Ughill Hall in 1963. GET OUT OF THE CAR! (This item is supposedly a true account recorded in the Police Log of Saratosa, Florida)

An elderly Florida lady did her shopping and upon returning to her car, found four males in the act of leaving with her vehicle.

She tried and tried, and then she realised why. It was for the same reason she had wondered why there was a football, a Frisbee and two 12-packs of beer in the front seat.

She dropped her shopping bags and drew her handgun, proceeding to scream at the top of her lungs, ―I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!‖

A few minutes later she found her own car parked four or five spaces farther down. She loaded her bags into the car and drove to the police station to report her mistake.

The four men didn‘t wait for a second threat They got out and ran like mad.

The sergeant to whom she told the story couldn‘t stop laughing.

The lady, somewhat shaken, then proceeded to load her shopping bags into the back of the car and got into the driver‘s seat. She was so shaken that she could not get her key into the ignition.

He pointed to the other end of the counter, where four pale men were reporting a car jacking by a mad, elderly woman described as white, less than five feet tall, wearing glasses, curly white hair and carrying a large handgun.

No charges were filed.

And the moral of the story?

If you are going to have a senior moment … make it memorable.

I‘m on a Committee!

Oh, give me your pity—I‘m on a committee Which means that from morning to night We attend and amend, and contend and defend Without a conclusion in sight. We compose and propose We suppose and oppose, and the points of procedure are fun. But though various notions are brought up as motions There‘s terribly little gets done. We confer and concur, we defend and demur We reiterate all of our thoughts. We revive the agenda with frequent addenda and consider a load of reports. We resolve and absolve but we never dissolve.

Since it‘s out of the question for us What a chattering pity to end our Committee Where else could we make such a fuss?

CHUCKLE CORNER WALKING Walking can add minutes to your life, This enables you at 95 years old to spend an additional 5 months in a nursing home at £2,000 per month.

Every time I start thinking too much about how I look, I just find a Happy Hour and by the time I leave, I look just fine.

I have to walk early in the morning, before my brain figures out what I‘m doing.

The only reason I would take up walking is so that I could hear heavy breathing again.

Every time I hear the dirty word ‗exercise‘ I wash my mouth out with chocolate.

I joined a health club last year, spent about 250 quid. Haven‘t lost a pound. Apparently you have to go there.

The advantage of exercising every day is so when you die, they‘ll say, ―Well, she looks good doesn‘t she‖.

I do have flabby thighs, but fortunately my stomach covers them.

I know I got a lot of exercise the last few years … just getting over the hill.

If you are going to try cross-country skiing, start with a small country.

My grandpa started walking five miles a day when he was 60. Now he‘s 97 years old and we don‘t know where he is.

We all get heavier as we get older, because there‘s a lot more information in our heads. That‘s my story and I‘m sticking to it.

We will also be taking part in the local parish shows and galas which normally run throughout June and July The majority of our old archives are now available to research on-line and can be viewed at www.bradfieldarchives.co.uk.

We are now well under way with cataloguing/indexing these documents which should now make researching family names and locations easier when reading the documents.

The Wizard tries to return Dorothy and Toto to Kansas by air, but Toto runs off and they are both left behind.

On the way they encounter Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion. They join forces and after a number of adventures, eventually ...

Arrive at the Emerald City, meeting with the Wizard who sends them off to deal with the wicked witch of the North ...

However, the good witch of the West is on hand to remind Dorothy that ―Home is best‖ … sending them back safely.

Summer Project : To work on a Log Bank in front of the toilet block.

To continue trying to improve the Duck area.

In the Orchard : to provide a Willow screen to shelter the Beehives (ideas to be displayed on the Spring Judging Day)

Bridge Project : in order to complete this project, to fix description plaque in place.

On Monday 20th February 2012, a cold and overcast day, Class 4, their teacher and helpers from Bradfield Dungworth Primary School planted the next section of wind-breaker hedge of Hawthorn, Blackthorn (Sloes), Dog Rose and Hazel in the Community Orchard.

They were under the guidance of Tim, Sheffield City Council Community Forester, who was assisted by colleagues Tom and John.

Sir David Jason has gone from actor to director for his latest project, taking the helm on the pilot of a new sitcom ―Pearly Gates‖ about a firm of undertakers, and part of the action was recently filmed in High Bradfield. Below are some images from the day. ―In a graveyard near Huddersfield, strange things are happening. Four people in undertakers' top hats and tails are hiding with a coffin behind a tomb after arriving at a church: the wrong church as it turns out: and gate-crashing a wedding.‖
