Tomahawk

welcomes you

WELCOME

In challenging times, the true beauty of a small closeknit community with unparalleled natural resources and strong like-minded businesses and organizations becomes glaringly clear. The Tomahawk region has pulled together in the past year to offer each other, our seasonal homeowners, visitors and new residents a respite from the world. It goes without saying that ‘social distancing’ in the great outdoors of the Northwoods is one of the great assets our area offers. In 2020, our office sent out more visitor guides, more trail maps, and more information about outdoor recreation in our area than ever before. We saw more inquiries from people looking to make the area their permanent home than ever before. We have had several businesses readjust and refocus their efforts to both survive the new landscape and/or help others do the same. Things changed because they had to, but in Tomahawk, we welcome change.

www.gototomahawk.com

It hasn’t been easy, and it is not getting easier, but watching this strong community adapt is one of the reasons so many love it here. It is nearly impossible to put together a calendar of events for 2021, as many of our businesses struggled to share their hours, which have often been modified during the ongoing pandemic. Even this guide had to be slightly adjusted in a world of these uncertainties. We encourage you to be patient, be kind, and don’t hesitate to call ahead. We work every day to keep our website current and accurate at www.gototomahawk. com. We are doing our best to keep up on changes within our business community. The Tomahawk Region is still going strong and only getting stronger. Thank you for considering visiting and perhaps someday even calling us home!

Spring & Summer Join the Warm Weather Fun

Spring is the start of our golf, spring-opener fishing, hiking, and biking season in Tomahawk. May is the month when we welcome back our award-winning Kwahamot Water Ski Show, an ever-popular attraction situated on the shores of the Wisconsin River right in the center of town.

Canoe, kayak, pontoon, or even jet-ski … the warm summer months are a natural fit for getting out on the water. So whether you want to walk our beautiful downtown streets shopping or hide away in a private resort nestled along the shores of one of our amazing lakeshores, spring and summer are wonderful times to visit us here in Tomahawk. We have resorts to host your family reunion, campgrounds for those who love to sleep under the stars, and a number of hotels and motels that offer countless amenities.

SPRING & SUMMER

If you are a sun seeker and water lover, Tomahawk has boundless adventures to fill your spring and summer. A truly bustling social scene this time of year offers a full calendar of events with something that everyone will enjoy. Live music can be found throughout the community, and family-friendly events occur every weekend all summer long.

Come for an event, but stay for a while. There is plenty to do and even more to see.

Join us Memorial Weekend in Downtown Tomahawk for a full day of one of the most popular classic car shows in the Northwoods. June brings with it the start of our wildly popular Music on the River Series, a free concert on Wednesdays in the summer held in Veterans Memorial Park—bring your chair and your cooler. The Fourth of July festivities in Tomahawk are arguably among the best you will find. Pow-Wow Days, hosted by the Tomahawk Lions Club, include a large parade, fireworks, water fights, and more food, drink, and fun than should be allowed. It’s really that spectacular. The Chamber hosts a large Arts and Crafts Fair on July 3rd with unique vendors from around the Midwest. A shopper’s paradise, prepare to come home with something fun you didn’t even know you needed.

Abundant Lakes & Wisconsin River The Tomahawk Area is home to more than 15 lakes & flowages offering

LAKES & RIVER

great recreational and fishing opportunities for walleye, musky, northern pike, bass, and panfish. Each year, several trophy-size musky, largemouth and smallmouth bass are caught in our beautiful waters.

Crystal Lake: A 105-acre lake located in Lincoln County. It has a maximum depth of 22 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing and a public beach. Fish include panfish, largemouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. The lake’s water is moderately clear. Deer Lake: Deer Lake is a 150-acre lake north of Tomahawk. It has a maximum depth of 62 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include musky, panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. The lake’s water is moderately clear. Lake Alice: Just under 1,400 acres, Lake Alice is a great fishing lake that holds musky, pike, bass, and walleye. It is best known for its excellent panfishing, including perch, bluegills, and crappies. Lake Alice is also a popular ice fishing spot. Lake Mohawksin: This 1,910-acre lake, part of the Wisconsin River System, derives its name from three rivers: “Mo” from Somo River, “Hawk” from the Tomahawk River, and “Sin” from the Wisconsin River. The lake is home to the mighty musky, some as long as 50 inches. Smallmouth bass, walleyes, northern pike, channel catfish, crappies, and bluegills are also plentiful.

8

Lake Nokomis: The largest lake in the Tomahawk area at 2,433 acres, Lake Nokomis is known for its bluegill, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, musky, northern pike, and walleye fishing. Known as a beautiful and productive fish lake, it is also a great place to spot majestic bald eagles. Lake Nokomis is part of a chain of lakes that includes Bridge and Deer lakes, with more than 4,000 acres of recreation. Jersey Flowage: This 423-acre lake located in Lincoln County has a maximum depth of 20 feet. Visitors have access to the lake from a public boat landing. Fish include musky, panfish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, and walleye. The lake’s clarity is low. Spirit Flowage: This is a scenic body of water where wildlife is plentiful, and the fishing is great. Walleyes are the main fish, producing 10-pound fish every year. Northern pike, muskies, crappies, bluegills, and huge bullheads can also be found. The winter is a playground for ice fishermen, as roads are plowed on the ice-covered flowage, offering access to the famous fishing holes. Wisconsin River: The Wisconsin River flows through the entire Tomahawk area, regulated by the Kings Dam found on the east side of town. Many fishermen find this location a favorite fishing hotspot.

History of Tomahawk Native Americans inhabited the Lincoln County area when the first European explorers, missionaries and fur traders traveled the Wisconsin River. In the early days, the Native Americans, who made this area their favorite hunting grounds, named this place “Tomahawk,” which can be translated as “made by nature’s own hands.” The city of Tomahawk was founded by William H. Bradley (1838–1902). From its very inception, Tomahawk was a feisty up-start, referred to as “The Magical City.” In 1886, Bradley organized the Tomahawk Land and Boom Company in connection with the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. A dam, which would make way for future pulp and paper mills, was completed in 1888 and at the time was the largest dam in the country.

Tomahawk was incorporated in 1891, during the height of the lumbering boom in Wisconsin, with approximately 2,000 inhabitants—when 60–75 million feet of lumber were produced every year. Today, Tomahawk is a small and vibrant community of approximately 3,770 people surrounded by an abundance of woods, water, and wildlife. Our economy is a mix of tourism and industry, and visitors and residents alike often cite our small-town community spirit as one of our greatest strengths. Whether you are visiting, moving or opening a business here, we think that you will agree with us that Tomahawk is a great place to live, work and play!
