One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, "What setting do I use on the washing machine?" "It depends," I replied. "What does it say on your shirt?" He yelled back, "University of Michigan."

1950s Lunchbox

Q: When I was in grade school during the 1950s, I carried my lunch in an Annie Oakley and Tag lunchbox. I still have it and the original thermos. I read in your column recently that older lunchboxes have become quite valuable. Is mine? -- Ken, Ramona, Calif. A: According to the 19th edition of “Toys & Prices” by Mark Bellomo and published by Krause Books, your lunchbox and thermos were issued in 1955 by Aladdin. The box is valued at $695, the bottle $150. ••• Q: My dad and I have always been interested in both the summer and winter Olympic Games. We have managed to build quite a collection of pins, posters, badges, decals and stickers. Is there someone to contact about the items we have? -- Rob, Titusville, Fla. A: Craig R. Perlow is the owner of Olympian Artifacts, a business that specializes in autographs, badges, posters, medals and programs relating to the Olympics. His addresses are P.O. Box 92331, Norcross, GA 30010-3311; and www.olympianartifacts. com. Incidentally, Perlow recently was named by the International Olympic Memorabilia Federation as an expert in this field of collecting.

Q: My mom recently gave me a bowl in the “CatTail” pattern, which she thinks she got as a wedding present in 1948. What can you tell me about it? -- Susan, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: Cat-Tail dinnerware was introduced during the 1930s and sold extremely well for the next two decades. Even though it was manufactured by several companies, most of the pieces I’ve seen were issued by Universal Potteries of Cambridge, Ohio. The pattern is distinctive, often featuring a cluster of red cat-tails with black stems. Most pieces seem to sell in the $15-$25 range. There was a big paddle sale at the boat store. It was quite an oar deal.

• It was noted American writer and essayist Flannery O’Connor who made the following sage obby Samantha Weaver servation: “Truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.” • Even though the human brain makes up only 2 percent of the body’s mass, it consumes 20 percent of the body’s calories and oxygen. • The chief translator for the European Parliament is named Ioannis Ikonomou. He is fluent in 32 languages -- and still learning. • During World War I, the United States acquired its first “war dog.” The pit bull was found wandering around Yale Field in New Haven, Conn., by soldiers in training. On particular soldier, Cpl. Robert Conroy, became

close to the dog and refused to leave Stubby behind; when Conroy was shipped out, he hid the dog on board. Stubby served overseas for 18 months and saw action in 17 battles. On more than one occasion he sniffed out surprise attacks, saving his regiment. He was known for locating wounded soldiers on the field, and he even once caught a German spy. He was the most decorated dog of the Great War, and he was promoted to sergeant for his combat service -- the only dog to be so honored. After the war, Sgt. Stubby was hailed as a hero; he led parades and met three presidents. He even has his very own brick at the World War I Memorial. It reads, “Sergeant Stubby, Hero Dog of WWI, a Brave Stray.” © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Publisher's Corner by Sean Athey Hello Everyone! Hope you are all doing well now that winter seems to have a firm grip on us. Be safe out there! This week's question... "Where do you get the jokes from... sometimes they are kind of lame." - James from Milbank. Ok, ok.... sometimes they make you laugh, sometimes they make you giggle, sometimes they make you groan. I hand-pick jokes for the paper that are family-friendly and non-offensive to any certain groups (well, except rednecks... just kidding - because I am one!). I will admit it is not that easy. A lot of the humor I come across is ok for the internet, but would never appear in our paper. So, I challenge you to send me a joke for the paper. You can email me or use the "Submit a Joke" tab on our website at www.LakeAreaTidbits. com. and I will give you credit for submitting it. Thanks in advance! First Cars I was talking with a friend of mine about our first cars, so I wanted to share a picture of mine. It was a 1966 Mercury Parklane that my dad did some horsetrading for. (not really horses, it was trees because he had tree moving business at the time.) I worked pretty hard to do my best body-work on it, but I was only 14 at the time, so it left a bit to be desired. We did get it painted all black and it really did look pretty good. I had an 8-track player with two tapes - The Everly Brothers and Waylon Jennings to listen to and I can sing every word when hear those songs, even to this day. The car had an interesting feature... you could roll down the rear window with a switch on the dash. I believe it was called the Breezeway Rear Window. Anybody that went to high school with me in Ortonville, MN will remember it... I believe it was dubbed the Bat-mobile at that time. It is still down on my folks place, but unfortunately it went through a flood and just isn't in a good enough state to restore... or maybe not, we will see! Thanks for reading Tidbits, see you all next week! sean@LakeAreaTidbits.com

Q: Like the rest of the world, I was so shocked to hear that Paul Walker had died in a car crash. I saw his last movie, “Hours,” the other day, and he was so good in it. I know he was working on the next “Fast and Furious” movie when he died. Any chance they’ll still release it? -- Jimmy T., Oceanside, Calif. A: Production on “Fast and Furious 7” was shut down after Paul’s death, with 60 percent of the movie having been shot. It wasn’t clear what they would do. Would they cancel the movie? Use CGI for some of his remaining scenes? Cut him out all together? Then just before Christmas, Universal released this official statement about “FF7,” along with a release date: “Continuing the global exploits in the franchise built on speed, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker lead the returning cast of ‘Fast and Furious 7,’ which will be released by Universal Pictures on April 10, 2015.” So, Paul will be in the movie, and you can bet millions of people can’t wait to see him in Kristen his final role. Bell ••• Q: Can you tell me if or when “The Americans” will return for another season? -- Ginnie F., via email A: FX recently announced that the spy drama -- which centers on the Cold War era of the 1980s -- starring Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys will return for 13 episodes come February. (As of this writing, I don’t have an exact date.) ••• Q: A few months back, you mentioned that a “Veronica Mars” movie is in the making. Can you tell me when it’ll be released? I can’t wait! -- Stacy W., via email A: “Veronica Mars” hits theaters March 14, and it stars Kristen Bell, Krysten Ritter, Gaby Hoffman, Justin Long, James Franco, Ken Marino, and many more. There’s even a cameo by Kristen’s real-life husband, Dax Shepard. In more “Veronica” news, if your cable provider offers the Pivot channel, beginning Jan. 13, you can see reruns Monday through Friday from 10 p.m. to midnight of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” followed by “Veronica Mars.” ••• Answers on page 8

Dickens never lost momentum as a writer, churning out major novels every year or two, often in serial form. Among his most important works are “David Copperfield” (1850), “Great Expectations” (1861) and “A Tale of Two Cities” (1859). • On Dec. 18, 1912, after three years of digging in the Piltdown gravel pit in Sussex, England, amateur archaeologist Charles Dawson announces the discovery of two skulls

that appear to belong to a primitive hominid and ancestor of man. • On Dec. 21, 1945, Gen. George S. Patton, commander of the U.S. 3rd Army, dies from injuries suffered not in battle, but in a freak car accident. He was 60 years old. She went on to become a mother, grandmother, and in 1996, a great-grandmother to Timu, the first surviving infant gorilla conceived by artificial insemination.
