Console TV Q: My parents lived in Chicago during the 1940s, and we were one of the first families in our neighborhood to buy a television set. It was a DuMont, Model RA-101-1A console. My mother wants to know if it has any value, since she is thinking of disposing of it. -- Charlotte, Midland, MI A: Most older television sets seem to sell in the $150 to $300 range, but as with most collectibles there are always exceptions. Your DuMont television-radio-phonograph combination is one of those exceptions. Manufactured in 1946, it is referenced in “Antique Trader Radio and Television Price Guide” edited by Kyle Husfloen. According to Husfloen, your set is worth about $1,500. ••• Q: I have a pair of Chelsea figurines and have been offered $600 for both. They are in perfect condition, and since I am close to retirement would like to sell the pieces. What is your advice? -- Isabel, Manchester, N.H. and 30 seconds? It is because I have Netflix and most 1/2 hour shows without those pesky commercials are only about 20 minutes or so long, and that fits... one episode, one workout. So far I have dropped 5 pounds and feel 10 times better... plus I am getting caught up all the happenings in Mayberry. I have also made a conscious effort to eat healthier. I was recently in one of our local thrift stores and purchased a small pressure cooker... on that can do 4 pints at a time. I really bought it for canning, but then on the handle it listed different foods and times to cook them, so I began experimenting. Wow, I don't know why I didn't discover this earlier in my life. My first experiment was pork chops, with potatoes and carrots, all in the same pot. I seared the chops first in EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) with some seasonings and cut the carrots in to large chunks and quartered the potatoes. Delicious is the only thing I could say. Next I did chicken quarters and following that I did BBQ chicken legs with hot sauce I made (from our own garden) mixed in for some spicy zing. Next up is BBQ ribs... I think I can almost taste them already!

The proceeds of this donation will go directly towards our Science program at the Big Stone City School District, as requested by our donor. In the education field, Science is one of the rare subjects that can reach so many other subject areas. Science not only studies scientific facts, it also touches on reading, writing and the principles of math. Science involves a lot of communication among students, and it helps develop patience and perseverance in them. Science teaches our students about the world around them, while also teaching them about skepticism. This helps to develop that spark in our students’ minds, and drives them to solve problems in the world. With this generous donation, our school district will plan to purchase science kits to explore fossils, Earth materials and saltwater, just to name a few things. We will also purchase other supplies such as energy balls, weights and scales to help enhance our current Science materials. On behalf of the staff at the Big Stone City School District, I would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” for your generous donation to our school, and more importantly, to the students in our school district. Thank You!

I considered going into the ministry but I didn't have an altar ego. How many sides does a circle have? Two: an inside and an outside.
Tidbits Tidbits®® of of The The Lake Lake Area Area -- www.LakeAreaTidbits.com www.LakeAreaTidbits.com -- For For Advertising Advertising Call Call 605-541-0110 605-541-0110 Q: Can you tell me if and when “Cedar Cove” will return for another season? -- Richard O., Summerfield, Fla. A: The Hallmark Channel has renewed the phenomenally successful series, which is based on the book series of the same name by Debbie Macomber, for a second season. The show’s first season made Hallmark Channel the No. 1 cable channel for Saturday Andie nights during the 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. time MacDowell slot. With internationally renowned actress Andie MacDowell leading the cast -- which includes Dylan Neal, Teryl Rothery, Bruce Boxleitner, Barbara Niven and Brennan Elliott -- season two of “Cedar Cover” promises more of the same drama, romance and fun. There is no word on the premiere date yet, but I’d start looking for it this summer. And of course, I’ll let you know as soon as I know exactly when it will return. ••• Q: Would you know anything about the fantastic TV series “24” with Kiefer Southerland? I thought they were bringing it back, or at least making a movie. -- Dick W., via email A: I did report on this about six months ago, but since this is such a hot subject -- I get tons of letters from readers asking me the same question -- I’ll write about it again, with some new information to pass along. Fox is indeed airing a new version of “24,” which is called “24: Live Another Day.” This go ‘round, it will be a 12-part series but will still cover the requisite 24 hours. Kiefer
will return, as will Mary Lynn Rajskub, William Devane and Kim Raver. Kiefer recently told the press that the series will take place in London, stating: “’24’ has always had such a global sensibility, but to be able to tell this intense ‘24’style story with the beauty of Europe’s history and architecture as the backdrop is going to be fascinating.” Fox’s entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly teased reporters that the show’s pickup intrigued many industry stars. “A lot of who’s who in Hollywood wanted to participate in this,” he revealed. Be on the lookout for “24: Live Another Day” this May on Fox. ••• Q: Please tell me that Animal Planet will be airing another “Puppy Bowl” this Super Bowl Sunday! -- Tina W., Portland, Maine A: The most anticipated -- and cutest -- sporting event of the season is about to get even bigger when “Puppy Bowl” returns to Animal Planet on Feb. 2 (first airing is from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET/PT) for it’s 10th anniversary edition. The show will repeat after that, with new content every hour. With each airing, fans vote in real time for which puppy will take home the coveted title of MVP (Most Valuable Puppy), there will be a Kitty HalfTime Show, penguin cheerleaders and viewers can participate in the Fantasy Puppy League (go to animalplanet. com/puppybowl to draft your team). This definitely is a can’t-miss event! Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. production of intricate figurines. My advice is to contact a certified appraiser in your area for his or her expert opinion. The cost would be nominal, and an expert could answer your question about current values. Recently, a woman from Delaware contacted me through this column about “several old dolls.” I gave her the same advice, to hire the services of an appraiser. She had been offered $500 for her four dolls. She had them appraised and was astonished to discover they were worth a total of $6,000. Her appraisal cost her about $50 and was, according to her, one of the best investments she ever made. ••• Q: Please give me an idea of what a couple of “Raikes Bears” are worth. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My friend adopted a little mixed terrier that he named “Jessie.” She must have come from an abusive situation because she trembles terribly, barks and sometimes pees whenever anyone but my friend tries to interact with her. I always thought I could get along with any dog, but Jessie is terrified of me. What can I do to make friends? -- Casey in Sioux City, Iowa DEAR CASEY: Sometimes it can be extremely difficult to make friends with other people’s pets. Temperament and the dog or cat’s early environment can play big roles in how they interact with others outside their perceived family unit. Jessie might not have come from an abusive situation; it could be that she wasn’t socialized correctly. And if she was just dumped at the shelter (or who knows where else), she could have been traumatized by being abandoned. It’s a sad and tough situation, but it sounds like your friend is giving her great care, and they have bonded. Don’t get frustrated if Jessie doesn’t take to you immediately. Always give her a friendly “hello” when you come in. If she backs away or gets nervous when you reach out to pat her, pull back calmly. She eventually may come to you to sniff your hand or your ankle -- stay calm and say nice, soothing words. If she sniffs your hand without backing away, try gently running your hand along her jawline to her ear, and scratch her ear gently. Don’t try to pat the top of her head, and don’t press your face into hers -- many dogs react negatively to these motions. It could be weeks or months before Jessie allows you to pet her, or maybe never. But give her time and space to feel confident and safe enough to let you in as well. Poe’s macabre work often portrayed motiveless crimes and intolerable guilt in his characters. • On Feb. 2, 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa. According to tradition, if a

To make matters worse for the Germans, the following day a massive surrender of German troops occurred at Stalingrad. • On Jan. 27, 1967, a launch-pad fire during Apollo program tests at Cape Canaveral, Fla., kills astronauts Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Edward H. An investigation indicated that a faulty electrical wire inside the Apollo 1 command module was the probable cause of the fire. • On Feb. 1, 1974, University of Washington student Lynda Ann Healy disappears from her apartment and is murdered
by serial killer Ted Bundy. In the summer of 1974, Bundy attacked at least seven young women in Washington. By the time he was captured in 1979, Bundy had become America’s most infamous serial killer. • On Jan. 28, 1985, 45 American music artists gather to record “We Are the World,” a record that would eventually sell more than 7 million copies and raise some $60 million for African famine relief. • It was Lebanese poet Kahlil Gibran who made the following sage observation: “I have learnt silence from the by Samantha Weaver talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am ungrateful to these teachers.” • In Japan, black cats are considered to be good luck. • If you’re ever longing for the “good old days,” you might want to keep this tidbit in mind: In 19th-century America, one
of the most popular cure-all remedies was “snail water,” which was made by pounding earthworms and snails together, adding the paste to beer and boiling the whole thing. Those in need of a tonic drank it. • Sea turtles can breathe through their backsides. • If you could leap over the St. Louis Arch unassisted, you would have jumping power equivalent to that of a flea. • If you’re planning a trip to Oregon, you might want to stop off in Gold Hill to see the Oregon Vortex, where strange phenomena are said to occur. In the mid-20th century, a scientist and
mining engineer named John Litser conducted experiments on the property and came to the conclusion that the site contains a spherical field of force and 15 crisscrossing magnetic fields. Before his death in 1959, he burned his notes, reportedly saying, “The world is not ready for this.” Those who tour the attraction today might see balls roll uphill or brooms stand on end. Some people appear to be much shorter and some much taller. There are even those who say visiting the Vortex eases back pain. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
