Cigar Box

Q: I am sending you a photo of a Corina cigar box, made of wood, which I’ve had since about 1950. The original cost of the cigars was 15 cents each. Can you tell me how much it is worth? -- Louella, Palm Desert, Calif. A: Since I have your letter and about a dozen others relating to cigarette and tobacco memorabilia, let me answer all of the inquiries with a source I have found to be helpful. Robert Forbes has collected tobacco-related items for a number of years and is an expert when it comes to tobacco silks and other premiums. He might be able to advise you. His contact is P.O. Box 62, DuPont, WA 98373. My personal opinion is that your cigar box is worth less than $25. ••• Q: I have inherited an E. Neal Pillar & Scroll shelf clock made in France in about 1900. It is a handsome neoclassical clock with beveled glass front and six cloisonne plaques, all highly decorated with scenes of maidens and other intriguing subjects. I have been offered $1,000 for this clock, but wanted to check with you before I make a decision. -- Stan, Tulsa, Okla.

Publisher's Corner by Sean Athey Hey Everyone! Cold enough for you?... ya, I'm getting tired of hearing that, too. It gets old after 900 days of freezing cold temperatures... k, maybe not 900, it just seems like that. I was looking at some old pictures from last year and came across one of my buddy and me playing horseshoes in the first part of January. Not video game horseshoes, but the real solid metal outdoors kind. The kind that makes your hands dirty and your arm ache after the third round of the Winter National Semi Final Horseshoe Extravaganza... or whatever we called it that day. I am looking forward to the next round of games... when the weather begins to cooperate... probably around July or so with the way it is going. It is a great rivalry and neither of us ever want to give in. First we play best out of three, then the loser says "Best out of five?"... sure, then it's best out of seven... then it is dark and we are throwing the shoes and just listening for the sound of metal on metal... ever score horseshoes with a flashlight?... we have. Anyhow, the earth is tilting, the sun is out longer and Spring will prevail! I wanted give you all a quick heads up on a few thing in the paper this week. • Watertown Winter Farm Show is happening February 11-15 and the schedule for the week is on page 8. • If you haven't tried the food and the Back Door BBQ located at Food-N-Fuel in Milbank yet, grab the $1.00 off coupon on page 7 of this paper and try it. The sandwiches are awesome. • Also in Milbank, New Beginnings is offering up to 50% off of their in-stock prom dresses if you are still looking. • R&R Outdoors in Appleton, MN has some great clearance deals going. If you haven't stop in to see the store, now is the time.

• If you are starting to think about your spring landscaping projects, check out the Boulder Designs ad at the bottom of this page. The ad is in black and white, but if you want the full effect of what they can do jump online and go to their website gallery and see the fantastic color creations they have.... absolutely beautiful. • The Elks Club in Watertown has a great prime rib and shrimp combo for Valentine's Day if you haven't figured out where to take your sweetheart yet. Details are on the back page. • I would like to thank our PetBits article sponsor, K-9 Classics of Watertown. Sandi has a great dog obedience training business in Watertown and we are glad she is helping us bring you some information on pets. We all have 'em, we all love 'em... right Boomer?... now my cat is just looking at me like I am crazy... or maybe he just wants more treats... hard to tell. Anyway, thanks again for reading Tidbits and when you are done with this paper, pass it on to your family, friends and neighbors... see you next week! Questions or comments: sean@lakeareatidbits.com

Music to Soothe an Anxious Dog?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My mixed collie “Skipper” gets extremely nervous during storms and when construction is going on outside -- basically during any unfamiliar noise. He cries and hides under the furniture, and I’m unable to approach him to comfort him. Is there anything I can do? -- Anxious in Boise DEAR ANXIOUS: Talk to the veterinarian first, so that he or she is aware that Skipper has an anxiety issue. Your vet can suggest a few solutions, including anti-anxiety medication and some training and behavioral techniques you can try. Many owners want to avoid medication for anxious pets, as they’re worried about the side effects. And in some cases, medication does not resolve the problem. Those are among the reasons owners are looking to alternative solutions to treating anxiety.

Some swear by a homeopathic product called Bach’s Rescue Remedy, found in stores that specialize in herbal supplements (although it’s being sold more and more in pet stores). About five drops of the product are added to a dog’s water dish daily. Other owners combine homeopathic supplements with other therapies, such as playing music specifically composed to calm dogs during stressful events like thunderstorms. Or they put their dog into a Thundershirt, a wraparound garment that exerts constant, gentle pressure. No matter what therapy you choose, remember that the home environment and your own emotions can affect Skipper. Make sure his life has routine -- same feeding time, same walking times, etc. When a stressful event happens, keep yourself calm and speak in a soothing voice to Skipper. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

A: I found your clock pictured and referenced in “Clocks Price Guide,” edited by Kyle Husfloen. According to this guide, your clock is worth about $3,000. ••• Q: I have a yellow teapot made by Hall China. It is called a “Lipton Tea Pot,” even though I can’t find such a marking on it. How much do you think it is worth? -- Robert, Conroe, Texas A: It is called a Lipton Tea Pot because of its shape. According to “Antique Trader Teapots” edited by Kyle Husfloen, your teapot is worth about $40. ••• Q: I have wooden hangers that were meant to be used to seal merchandise in boxes from department stores. -- Glorea, Surprise, Ariz. A: Advertising memorabilia is always popular with collectors, and if your hangers are marked with the name of a store or firm, that could add to their value. Show your hangers to dealers in your area to see if there is any interest. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. At an evening event in 1989, a bottle of wine once owned by Thomas Jefferson was up for sale. The asking price? $500,000. It seems nobody was willing to

The bottle was insured, however, and the merchant did end up with $250,000. • The White House was not designed by an American. Molten Minicakes

These minicakes with soft chocolate centers can make even the most jaded chocolate lovers swoon. Another bonus: They freeze well (for up to two weeks). Bake for 16 minutes if frozen. 1/4 cup granulated sugar, plus additional for dusting 4 1-ounce squares semisweet chocolate, chopped 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, cut into pieces 1/4 cup heavy or whipping cream 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 2 large eggs 2 large egg yolks Confectioners’ sugar Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, optional 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease eight 6-ounce custard cups. Dust with granulated sugar. 2. In heavy 3-quart saucepan, heat chocolate, butter and cream over low heat, stirring occasionally, until chocolate has melted and mixture is smooth. Remove pan from heat. Add vanilla. With wire whisk, stir in flour just until mixture is smooth. 3. In medium bowl, with mixer at high speed, beat 1/4 cup granulated sugar, eggs and yolks until thick and lemon-colored, about 10 minutes. Fold egg mixture, one-third at a time, into chocolate mixture until blended. 4. Divide batter evenly among custard cups. (Can be made ahead. Wrap well and refrigerate up to 24 hours.) Place cups in jelly-roll pan and bake cakes until edges are set but centers still jiggle, 8 to 10 minutes. 5. Cool in pan on wire rack 3 minutes. Run thin knife around sides to loosen cakes; invert onto plates. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Serve immediately with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired.
