Free Fun Take One
A man is trying to understand the nature of God, time, and the Universe. He asks God, “How long is a billion years to you?” God says, “A billion years is like a second to me.” The man asks, “Well, how much is a billion dollars to you?” God says, “A billion dollars is like a penny to me.” So the man says, “God, can I have a penny?” And God replies, “Sure, in a second.”

Byers Carolers Q: My wife has a collection of 25 to 30 Byers Carolers, all in original boxes and in good condition. We have downsized and are looking to sell them. Do you know of anyone in the secondary market who deals in them? -- Ralph, Coventry, R.I. A: I made several calls, and it seems that no one I contacted is in the market to buy Byers Carolers. I next monitored eBay, where several dozen are posted for sale. This might be your best bet. In my opinion, the Byers Carolers that I’ve seen are of fairly recent vintage, most from the 1990s. In other words, I don’t think these Christmas caroler figurines are quite old or rare enough to be in much demand with serious collectors. ••• Q: I have a collection of more than 100 salt and pepper shakers. Although I don’t have plans to liquidate, I am nevertheless interested in current values. -- Sue, Rio Rancho, N.M. A: There are several excellent price guides that should be helpful. One that I’ve found easy to navigate is “Antique Trader Salt & Pepper Shaker Price Guide” by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause. It features more than 1,000 S&Ps made by

Q: I am devastated by the recent death of Philip Seymour Hoffman. Do you know what will become of “Mockingjay”? -- Jessica W., via email A: Philip Seymour Hoffman, who passed away last month at the age of 46, had finished “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1” (which is set for release this November), and had one scene left to film for “Mockingjay -- Part 2” (to be released November 2015). That scene, however, was an emotional and pivotal scene, and as of this writing, it hasn’t been revealed how the filmmakers plan to work around that. A Lionsgate executive told “The Hollywood Reporter”: “We’re all extraordinarily sad. ... Obviously, we’re going to have a couple of work-around issues, but the movie will be creatively whole. His performances in both [remaining] movies will be up to the best of his craft. We feel it will be a good tribute to him.” ••• Q: It’s good to see Jennifer Lopez back in the saddle as a judge on “American Idol,” but I miss seeing her on the big screen. Does she have any plans for a film in the near future? -- Gigi R., Chicago A: Jennifer Lopez and Viola Davis (“The Help”) are set to co-star together in the film “Lila and Eve.” It tells the story of a grief-stricken mother (Viola) who, in the aftermath of her son’s murder, attends a support group where she meets Eve (Jennifer), who has lost her daughter. When
Lila hits numerous roadblocks from the police in bringing justice for her son’s slaying, Eve urges Lila to take matters into her own hands to track down her son’s killers. The film is scheduled for a late 2014/early 2015 release date, and is expected hit the festival circuit before opening to wider audiences. ••• Q: Please tell me what happened to the miniseries “The Assets.” It was really good, and I would like to see all of it. -- Marcia H., via email A: Due to dismal ratings, ABC pulled the eight-part drama after airing Jennifer only two episodes. At the reLopez cent Television Critics Association press tour, ABC Entertainment Group president Paul Lee said that he was proud of the show, even if its ratings weren’t what they were hoping for. He said the remaining six episodes of “The Assets” would be made available at some point in the future -- either on ABC or ABC.com -- but no specific time frame was given. ••• Q: I haven’t seen Samantha Brown on TV in a very long time. Will I see her again soon? -- John L., Leesburg, Fla. A: Next up for Samantha is co-hosting the Travel Channel’s “The Trip: 2014” -- which also features Adam Richman, Don Wildman and Anthony Melchiorri -- as they explore the ultimate insider experiences in Spain and Morocco. This television special is also a sweepstakes: Go to travelchannel.com by March 24, and enter for your chance to win this $100,000 dream vacation. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
Slow-Cooker Spiced Pork Sandwiches
Pork butt (also known as pork shoulder) is ideal for the slow cooker, which renders the meat terrifically tender ... and flavorful, especially when infused with this mix of orange juice, paprika, cumin and cloves. 1 orange 2 limes 1 tablespoon paprika 2 teaspoons ground cumin 6 whole cloves (optional) Kosher salt and pepper 1/2 cinnamon stick 3 pounds pork butt or shoulder, trimmed and cut into 4-inch pieces 1/2 small red onion 4 slices country bread 1 bunch spinach, thick stems discarded 1. Zest the orange into a 5- to 6-quart slow cooker. Squeeze from orange and limes into measuring cup (should yield about 3/4 cup total). Transfer all but 1/4 cup of juice to the slow cooker; refrigerate remaining juice. 2. Add the paprika, cumin, cloves (if using), 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper to slow cooker and whisk to combine; add cinnamon stick. Add pork and toss to coat. Cook, covered, until pork is tender and easily pulls apart, on low for 7 to 8 hours or on high for 5 to 6 hours. 3. When pork has 15 minutes left to cook, thinly slice onion and add to reserved juice. Let sit, tossing occasionally, until ready to use. Toast the bread. 4. Remove the cinnamon stick. Using forks, shred the pork and stir it into the cooking liquid. Push the pork to one side. Add the spinach to the other side; season with 1/4 teaspoon salt and toss until beginning to wilt. Top the bread with the pork, spinach and onions. Serves 4. Tips & Techniques: Instead of making sandwiches, pile the pork, spinach and onions on top of Cheddar cheese grits.

Historians believe Marlowe served as a spy for Queen Elizabeth while at Cambridge. • On Feb. 25, 1862, the U.S. Congress passes the Legal Tender Act, authorizing the use of paper notes to pay the government’s bills. This ended the long-standing policy of using only gold or silver in transactions, and it allowed the government to finance the enormously costly Civil War. • On Feb. 27, 1915, “The Valley of Fear” by Arthur Conan Doyle is published. Pets, Pot Don’t Mix
DEAR PAWS’S CORNER: I read a report this week that said more and more pets are being treated for “marijuana poisoning” from accidentally ingesting their owners’ medically prescribed marijuana. Is this true? Why haven’t we heard more about it? -- Concerned in California DEAR CONCERNED: As the number of states that allow medical marijuana to be prescribed increases, it’s likely you will hear more stories about pets being affected by ingesting this drug. A recent NBC News report estimated that calls to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center reporting pet poisonings increased 30 percent between 2009 and 2013. However, Time magazine disputes that report, noting that the actual number of calls increased from 213 in 2009 to about 320 last year -- a very small percentage of the 18,000 total calls the APCC gets each year from owners. My take on the issue is this: Marijuana is a drug, so own-
ers need to use common sense. You wouldn’t leave other prescriptions lying around for the dog or cat to eat. So don’t leave your stash lying around. Further, many patients use baked goods to ingest marijuana rather than smoking it. “Pot brownies,” for example, contain chocolate, which is definitely dangerous to dogs and can cause severe symptoms when eaten. The APCC gets far more calls about poisoning from chocolate ingestion than from any other substance, Time noted. That said, pet owners who see or suspect their dog or cat has ingested marijuana should contact their veterinarian for advice. They also should watch their pet for unusual symptoms, such as lethargy, excessive drooling, diarrhea or incontinence, and take them to the vet immediately if they begin experiencing these or any other problems. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
