Youth Hymnal Q: I have a copy of “The Young People’s Church of the Air Hymn Book,” compiled and autographed by Percy B. Crawford. It was published in 1932. Could you tell what it is worth and where I might sell it? -- Jane, Lititz, Pa. A: Percy B. Crawford was a Canadian who immigrated to the United States during the early decades of the past century. He was an evangelist and fundamentalist preacher, and was one of the first to discover the power of early radio. In 1931, while a seminarian at Westminster Theological Seminary, he started a youth-oriented radio program at a Philadelphia station. It may hit a sour note with you, but his songbook, even autographed, is worth at best only about $15 or $20. My suggestion is to show it to used book dealers in your area to see if there is any interest. ••• Q: I have a Bible that was given to my mother when she and her family immigrated to America from Austria. It is dated 1914 and was from the New York Bible Society. Does it have any value? -- Margaret, Sioux Falls, S.D. A: Verily I say unto you, not really. Only Bibles crafted before about 1700 are of interest to most collectors. Your Bible

Q: I am so into the CW show “Reign,” and I wondered about the actress who plays Clarissa. Can you tell me what else she has been in? -- Mary Ellen F., via email A: Toronto native Katie Boland, 26, has been professionally acting since she was 9 years old, and is known for her roles on “The Zack Files,” “Terminal City,” “The Master” and a ton of other stuff. Right now at hulu.com, you can catch Katie in the 11-part Web series “Long Story Short,” which she wrote and stars in, and co-created and co-produced (with her mother, Gail Harvey, who also directs the series). I asked Katie how the whole idea for the Web series came about, and she told me: “My mom and I were interested in Web content, and she came to me and asked me if I had any ideas for a Web series. I had written some personal essays on what I call ‘The Summer I Lost My Mind.’ That was the material I used for ‘Long Story Short.’ “We shot the series in my childhood home, where my mom still lives. All the crewmembers were around my age, so it’s a very young and excited crew. We would just shoot all day, and take a break for lunch. It was the most fun I’ve ever had being creative. It was an amazing experience, and I’m really excited to do it again [for season two].” ••• Q: Several years ago, there was a TV program similar to “The Bachelor.” It was about an all-American boy from Texas who went abroad to find love. He met a girl named Linda, who eventually moved to Texas to surprise him. It was a nice ending to the story. Do you have info on this program and/or whatever happened to them? -- Joyce M., via email A: The show you’re thinking of is “The Next Joe Millionaire” -- a follow-up to surprise hit “Joe Millionaire” -- which

Katie Boland aired on Fox in 2003. Rodeo-cowboy David Smith of Midland, Texas, went to Italy to find “true love” -- by masquerading as a millionaire to a group of European women who were unaware of the show’s actual premise. At the end of the season, David and Linda Kasdova rode off into the sunset together, only to break up a short time later. ••• Q: Now that Rob Lowe is gone from “Parks and Rec,” what’s he got coming next? -- Paul F., The Villages, Fla. A: Rob may have left “Parks and Rec,” but he’s staying with NBC. He’s been tapped to star in a new pilot, a singlecamera comedy called “The Pro,” which centers around a golf and tennis club. Rob stars as Ben Bertrahm, a former doubles champion who is reunited with his expartner Bobby Welch (the hilarious Rob Riggle) after a public feud that left them both floundering in life. Flushing Out Rodents

February February 24, 24, 2014 2014

To find out if you have a rodent infestation, head for the kitchen and food-storage areas (like the basement and pantry). Pick a lower-level shelf and remove all the items, then inspect the back of the shelf, with a flashlight if need be. Look for telltale mouse droppings (they look like black rice grains). You also might see an unusual amount of spilled grains (rice, oatmeal, etc.) or crumbs, and you might detect a faint musty odor. Inspect the food containers you just took out. Cardboard boxes with gnawed corners indicate mice have attempted to get into them (they often will be chewed through, with their contents spilling out). Plastic bags also will be compromised, and mice can even gnaw through the plastic tops of metal coffee cans. Next, check the attic and crawlspace areas. Use a flashlight to look for droppings along the support beams, and inspect insulation for damage caused by burrowing rodents. If you don’t find evidence of mice or other rodents in the house, don’t assume there is no infestation, particularly if you notice a musty smell. Schedule an inspection by a pest-control service to confirm whether or not you have an infestation.

Q: My mother-in-law was visiting over the holidays and kept saying she could smell a mouse. I looked all over but couldn’t see or smell anything. Was she just being paranoid? -- Jim in Worcester, Mass. A: Believe it or not, it is possible to smell that a mouse is present in your home. Field mice, for example, build nests in the walls near an entry point. The nests give off a unique musty smell, caused in part by bits of fur padding the nest and urine (mice dribble urine constantly). Mice also are small and sneaky, usually coming out only at night when the family is asleep and the sound level in the house is low. They travel under cover as much as possible, either along the inside of the walls or the back of cabinets and behind countertop items. How do they get into the house in the first place? According to Terminix, mice can squeeze through a crack that a pencil will fit through (sightly larger than 1/4 inch in HOME TIP: Leaf piles, unturned mulch, junk piles diameter). Rats can get through a quarter-sized opening. So small openings in the foundation of a house are common and stacked firewood are tempting shelters for all kinds of entry points. Openings around pipes or cables are prime rodents. Locate them several feet from your house, garage or shed, and remove junk piles as soon as possible. spots as well. Mice also might climb in through the attic, exploiting openings around soffit vents or damaged sections Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. of the roof or eaves.

Walter Hunt, but he came up with the ideas for an ice plough, a streetcar bell, an early version of the repeating rifle, artificial stone, the lockstitch sewing machine and a nail-making machine, among other things. One of his smallest and most useful inventions was the safety pin. In the mid-1800s, Hunt owed a friend $15. In order to come up with the cash to settle the debt, he decided to invent something. He picked up an 8-inch piece of brass wire he had on hand and made a coil in the middle of it, creating the spring action to open it. He then devised a clasp at one end to shield the user from the sharp point. After the device was patented in 1849, Hunt sold the patent to W.R. Grace and Company for $400, leaving himself with

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Heartbeat: How Fast Is Too Fast

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For some reason, I have gotten into the habit of checking my pulse when I walk or when I sit. While I watch TV, my pulse is about 100. Isn’t that way too fast? -- C.K. ANSWER: Pulse and heartbeat are one and the same. When the heart ejects blood, a pressure pulse is created in the all the body’s arteries. You can feel the pulse beat in the neck, the ankle or the thumb side of the wrist. A normal pulse rate (heartbeat) is 60 to 100 times a minute. Your 100 is normal, but at the high end of normal. Since you have no symptoms, you don’t have to rush to see a doctor. But at your next exam, mention your high pulse rate. The doctor can judge if conditions that lead to a fast heartbeat need to be investigated. An

overactive thyroid gland and anemia are two such conditions. The booklet on heartbeat irregularities explains the heart’s many rhythm problems. Atrial fibrillation is the chief one. You do not have it. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 107W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. ••• DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I do hope you will be able to reply to my question. It is something that quite upsets me. My granddaughter had a tattoo put on her arm from shoulder to elbow. Why she ever did this is beyond me. She is to be married next September. She is trying to cover the tattoo with makeup so it won’t be seen. Is it possible to have it removed? Do plastic surgeons take these things off? -- C.G. ANSWER: People mulling over the wisdom of a tattoo should consider it like they would a diamond -- something that lasts forever. It could make them pause. Yes, tattoos can be removed with lasers. Treatment is expensive, time-consuming and sometimes cannot get rid of all traces of the tattoo. It depends on the pigment used, but lasers do a pretty good job. Work is under way for the development of pigments that are more readily erased. Plastic surgeons, dermatologists and other doctors are adept at removing tattoos. Older treatments, still used from time to time, include cutting out the skin (done with small tattoos) or abrading the tattoo, similar to abrading acne scars. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.© 2014 North America Synd., Inc.. All Rights Reserved

Any value? -- Steve, Spring Branch, Texas A: According to “Warman’s Political Collectibles: Identification & Price Guide” by Dr. Enoch L. Nappen and published by Krause Books, your T-shirt is worth in the $15-$20 range. ••• Q: My grandmother received a beaver coat for her birthday in 1930. Helping a Dog Gain Weight

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Recently, an elderly relative was moved to a full-time care facility because she was unable to care for herself or her two dogs. We gladly took in “Sadie” and “Tasha,” both small, mixed-breed adult dogs. I think they’re very underweight, though -- their skin just hangs off of them. What is the best way to help them gain weight quickly? -- Jerry S., via e-mail DEAR JERRY: First, take them to the veterinarian for a complete checkup. While they may very well be underweight, make sure this is the case, as some dog breeds have somewhat loose skin. The vet also can determine their approximate age, check for any underlying medical conditions and test for specific nutritional deficiencies. From there, work with the vet to put together the best diet for the dogs. It likely will include a mix of dry and wet dog

foods, in specific amounts, for a certain number of feedings each day. I would not be surprised if they need to be given a nutritional supplement. The vet may be able to sell these to you, or recommend where to buy them. And, if needed, they may be given medication. It’s very important that they take any prescribed medicines as directed. If Sadie and Tasha do not have up-to-date vaccination records, the vet will give them the vaccinations they need. While healthy dogs generally need to return to the vet just once per year, Sadie and Tasha likely will need to be seen more frequently so the vet can monitor their weight gain and health, and adjust their diet if needed. I commend you for becoming Sadie and Tasha’s new family -- it sounds like they will be well cared for. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hello! My name is Sean Athey. My wife, Lynette, and I are the owner/operators of Tidbits of the Lake Area. We do our best each week to bring you the most fun, most far-reaching and free publication in the area. I have been in the printing/publishing industry for well over 20 years and I would like to bring that experience to work for you, not only with great advertising, but also for your business printing. If you need any of the above products or have a special job, I would be very happy to visit with you about it. Here are a couple tips I recommend for working up a printed product.

#1. DRAW IT. Take a piece of paper and pencil and sketch out your thoughts. It doesn't have to be pretty, but it will help you solidify your ideas and makes the project move along quicker once in production. #2. FOCUS POINTS. Think about what you want your printed piece to say and write those down in a 1,2,3 list. This way you can focus your message and be sure the viewer is getting the info they need. #3 LOOK AHEAD. To keep prices budget-friendly and avoid rush charges, look ahead. I recommend looking a month ahead. Don't wait until you only have 5 business cards left!
