The devout cowboy lost his favorite Bible while he was mending fences out on the range. Three weeks later, a group of grasshoppers walked up to him carrying the Bible on their backs. The cowboy couldn't believe his eyes. He took the precious book off the grasshoppers backs, raised his eyes heavenward and exclaimed, "It's a miracle!" "Not really," said the grasshoppers. "Your name is written inside the cover."

Publisher's Corner by Sean Athey
Hey Everyone! Hope you are enjoying our Spring weather. Although, this morning (May 16) I had some water in a wheelbarrow that had a layer of ice over it. Good thing we didn't get too much into the garden yet! Thanks for taking some time to read this issue of Tidbits. If your lives are anything like ours, it is hard to find those moments. It seems like the world is just flashing by sometimes. We are extra busy right now getting Tidbits out to our readers, working with the great businesses that help support Tidbits, and getting ready for our son's graduation next week. Lynette and I wish all of our graduates across Tidbits territory the best for the future! Hmmm... so many things to write about... so little time. Let's see...
The community of Estelline, named after the daughter of a Federal judge, was incorporated in 1882. Estelline, which means “Little Star” is located on U.S. Hwy. 28, seven miles west of Interstate 29. Like many Midwest communities, the early days of Estelline were based on the arrival of the railroad. The entrepreneurial spirit of this community was alive in the early 1900’s as a creamery was built to meet the needs of the growing community. Progressive minded farmers took advantage of the opportunity by selling cream locally in an effort to maintain a more prosperous outlet for their products. One of the landmarks for the community has been the gazebo at the south end of Main Street. Originally constructed in 1928 by volunteers, the gazebo has weathered the times of Estelline and stands as the proud entrance to the community. Today, Estelline hosts a bit of the past, the present, and the future. New business ventures can be found amongst landmarks like Ward’s Shopping Center (early 1950s) and Hoffelt Drug Store (1911), where you can still grab an old-fashioned fountain drink. Estelline is a community full of life and character, from the historic Gazebo off Main Street to the Estelline High School, Home of the Redmen. As the residents and city officials continue to make efforts to improve their already cherished community, they welcome you so that you might call Estelline home as well.

Pressure Cooker Meals I have been having a ball creating single pot meals in our pressure cooker. Well, cookers... since I have picked up two more. Last night we had fish, potatoes and canned beans from the garden. The fish and potatoes to a whole 8 minutes to cook, and tasted fantastic. I am at the point now where I feel comfortable sharing some recipes I created... so check back, I'll try to get a couple in next week - with pictures! continued on next page

New Year's Resolution My "get in shape" has been going well...I faltered a bit in March - it was a rough month. We thought winter would never end! Thanks to our readers who shared their own resolutions with us... hope you are all doing well. Reader Contest Thanks again to all of our contest entrants. One of the exciting parts of my week is seeing the entries come in and where they come from. I have to tell you though, my aunt Marilyn stopped me the other day at the post office and asked if I put the wrong fish in last week. I said no, there were three Perch to find... but, just like any lake, there may be fish in there other than what you want to catch. Tidbits of the Lake Area is no different. You may see other fish, but each week the contest centers around three of a certain kind... (or maybe I just forget sometimes to take the old ones out.. ha, ha)

A clarification: In the May 5th issue, in the Trivia Newsfront quiz. Question #3 should have read. "On average, what is the largest land-dwelling animal in North America?" A: The Polar bear (there are exeptionally sized Brown bears, but on average the Polar bears are the largest). Thanks to the sharp reader who caught that... the way it was worded the answer would have been the Elephant. Thanks, again!

North Carolina-Style Barbecued Chicken In North Carolina, where barbecue is taken very seriously, the sauce you prepare depends upon your locale. In the northeastern part of the state, the sauce is made with vinegar and pepper flakes. In the south, a vinegar-and-mustard-based sauce is a must, and in the west, a tangy, tomato-based blend is revered. 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce 1/3 cup cider vinegar 3 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon dry mustard 3/4 teaspoon salt 3/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke 1 chicken (3 1/2 pounds), cut into 8 pieces and skin removed from all but wings 1. Prepare grill. In nonreactive 2-quart saucepan, heat tomato sauce, vinegar, honey, oil, dry mustard, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper and liquid smoke over medium heat to boiling. Boil 2 minutes. Remove from heat. (Makes about 2 cups sauce.) Reserve 1 cup sauce to serve with chicken. 2. Sprinkle chicken with remaining 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Arrange chicken on grill over medium heat and grill, turning occasionally, 15 minutes. Continue to grill, turning and brushing chicken every 2 minutes with barbecue sauce, until juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife, 10 to 15 minutes longer. Serve with reserved barbecue sauce. • Each serving without extra sauce: About 491 calories, 27g total fat (7g saturated), 49g protein, 11g carbohydrate, 154mg cholesterol, 685mg sodium. A: The great thing about collecting matchbooks is -- as you mentioned -- a fairly good collection can be built with little or no money. That also seems to translate in prices when they pop up in the marketplace. During a recent visit to a major antique mall, I spotted a large plastic bag of several hundred matchbooks priced for $5. As I often write in this column, there are always exceptions. A matchbook from the Stork Club in New York would more than likely be worth its weight in gold. One of the better references that I have found is “The Matchcover Collector’s Price Guide” by Bill Retskin and published by Antique Trader Books. This guide features more than 10,000 matchcover descriptions and estimated values in over 150 categories, from airlines to zoos. Incidentally, the first matchbook was created in 1889
••• Q: I was a member of the Playboy Club in Chicago during the 1960s. In addition to Playboy Magazine, I also managed to collect and save related materials such as ashtrays, key chains, shot glasses and calendars. Whom can I contact to find others who collect? – Art, Paterson, N.J. A: Tom Bonner is president of the Playboy Collectors Club of America, P.O. Box 653, Phillipsburg, MO 65722.
and quickly became one of the premier advertising vehicles of the 20th century. ••• Q: I have played golf for most of my adult life and have a collection of vintage clubs, balls and even tournament badges from the 1950s. How can I find out how much my collection is worth? -- Dick, Macon, Ga. A: The “Official Price Guide to Golf Collectibles” by Edward Kiersh and published by House of Collectibles is fairly comprehensive, yet easy to navigate. In addition to current prices, Kiersh, editor of “Golf Course Register,” explains what makes a golf collectible valuable. He also advises how to make purchases on the Internet, and even provides tips on how to preserve, store and display golf collectibles.

Q: Can you tell me what I can see Ben McKenzie in next? I loved him on “Southland,” and I really miss that series. -- Hallie F., via email A: Ben returns to series television this fall when he stars in Fox’s “Gotham,” which is a Ben prequel series to the “Batman” McKenzie movies. Ben plays a young James Gordon -- the police official whom “Batman” fans know as an eventual ally to Bruce Wayne/ Batman. The cast also includes Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Mazouz, Robin Lord Taylor, Camren Bicondova, Erin Richards, Sean Pertwee, Zabryna Guevara and Cory Michael Smith. Executive producers are Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist”), Danny Cannon (the “CSI” franchise and “Nikita”) and John Stephens (“Gossip Girl” and “The O.C.”). Judging by the teaser trailer online, this definitely is something I’m going to watch. ••• Q: I keep hearing rumors that a new “Star Wars” will be coming to theaters. Is that true, or is it going to be a TV series? -- Freddie T., Omaha, Neb. A: The worst-kept secret in Hollywood was verified April 29 when director J.J. Abrams posted a picture on starwars.com of the first table read for the feature film “Star Wars: Episode VII.” Cast members include Harrison Ford, Daisy Ridley, Carrie Fisher, Peter Mayhew, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, John Boyega and Adam Driver. Of the movie, J.J. said in a statement: “It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. Everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.” Fans won’t have to wait too long to see the much-anticipated film: Its scheduled premiere date is Dec. 18, 2015. ••• Q: Can you tell me if “Almost Human” will be back for another season? -- John J., via email A: Fox opted not to renew the sci-fi crime drama set in 2048, which centered on John Kennex (played by Karl Urban) and his android police partner, Dorian (played by Michael Ealy). The show had been gaining in the ratings race in recent weeks; however, there are too many new powerhouse drama series (like the aforementioned “Gotham”) that Fox has ordered, and there just wasn’t room for “Almost Human.” ••• Q: Years ago, I used to watch “Project Greenlight” on HBO, and I really enjoyed it. Is it true that HBO is bringing the series back? -- George S. in Kentucky A: After being off the air for more than a decade, HBO has opted to bring back Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s filmmaker competition series for a third season. Ben revealed of the 20012003 series in a press statement: “’Project Greenlight’ was ahead of its time. Now that technology has caught up to the concept, we thought it was a perfect time to bring it back.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Getting Your Home Ready to Sell
Q: Several months ago, my parents agreed they were unable to take care of their house on their own, and moved to an assisted-living community. I took on the task of selling their home so that they can continue to fund their new situation. However, the real-estate broker who I initially contacted said the house is in too poor a condition to sell. I don’t have the time or money to fix up their house. What can I do? -- Charly, via email A: Did the broker give you any indication of why he or she felt the house couldn’t be sold in its current condition? If not, contact the broker to find out what specific things stood out. If you don’t get answers, contact another real-estate firm to come see the house and find out if it’s really unsellable. I don’t have any specifics as to the home’s condition from your letter, but to an agent or broker trying to sell your home, appearance is very important. Is the inside of the home very cluttered? Is there damage to interior walls, visible mold, large cracks or other immediately noticeable issues? Is the exterior of the home in need of paint or repairs to the siding, roof, steps or walkways? These all affect the home’s sale price and can make it sit on the market longer than anyone would like. Houses can sell in any condition -- but the price will take a hit if it needs a lot of work. I vividly recall being shown a triple-decker in East Boston several years ago with foundation problems so bad, the structure was tilting at an alarming angle. The house sold, but at about one-third the average price for homes in that neighborhood. If the house is structurally sound, you may be able to raise its sale price by investing some time and sweat into
freshening up its appearance, outside and in. A fresh coat of paint alone can make a home’s value jump, and it’s not a huge investment. Make a plan to do specific things over several weekends, or even one day a week if that’s all the time you have. Enlist family and friends to help. Put together a budget ahead of time so you know how much you can spend on minor repairs. • Spruce up the house exterior by keeping the lawn mowed and the hedges trimmed. Tear out any dead vegetation. Plant a few flowers along the walkway or in front of the house. • De-clutter the entire home interior, too. If there’s a lot of furniture or keepsakes, if the closets are full of clothes, find out what your parents want to keep, sell or distribute. If they can’t come to the house to show you, take pictures of all the items, put them on your laptop and go through them with your parents. • Clean as much as possible: Get dust and cobwebs out of the house, wipe the walls clean and get the kitchen and bathrooms as sparkling as possible. • Give interior walls a fresh coat of paint. Remove peeling or torn wallpaper, and repair small holes and dings in the walls. • Check out websites or books about staging a house. HGTV has some quick tips, as well as a room-by-room staging guide. • Finally, if the house has some major repair issues, such as needing a new roof, foundation or plumbing issues, talk with the broker about them and how these can affect the sale of the home. Heartworm In Dogs Is Often Fatal DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My veterinarian says I have to give both my dog and my cat heartworm medication every month. Why do I have to do this? It sounds like a moneymaking scheme for the vet and the pharmaceutical industry. -- Gary in Cincinnati DEAR GARY: It’s not a moneymaking scheme. Trust me, you do not want your pets to suffer from the complications that heartworm infestation can cause. Heartworm in dogs is often fatal, and while cats are less likely to die from it, they too suffer problems due to the damage caused by the worms as they travel through blood vessels and organs. Hundreds
May 19, 2014
Tidbits® of The Lake Area • (605) 541-0110 of worms can live in a dog’s blood vessels -- ultimately traveling to the chambers of the heart -- for as long as seven years. It’s also somewhat easy for untreated dogs and cats to become infested with heartworm. The parasite is carried by mosquitoes and can be passed along when the mosquito bites your pet. Pets are at highest risk in the summer, when it’s hot and humid -- prime time for mosquitoes. Give your pets their heartworm medication at the recommended dose for their breed and size, or as specified by the vet. Most heartworm medicines must be given once a month.
For pet owners whose dog has never been tested for heartworm, get this test at the vet’s office before starting treatment for heartworm. If the dog already has heartworm, the vet will need to treat it in a different way to prevent problems. Send your questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.
