A small town Doctor was famous in the area for always catching large fish. One day while he was on one of his frequent fishing trips he got a call that a woman at a neighboring farm was giving birth. He rushed to her aid and delivered a healthy baby boy. The farmer had nothing to weigh the baby with so the Doctor used his fishing scale. The baby weighed 21 lbs 13 oz.

A cop pulls a guy over for speeding and the guy’s defense was, “I was just going with the flow of traffic.” The cop’s response... “Ever go fishing?” “Yeah....” said the motorist. “Ever catch ALL the fish?” asked the cop.

• It was Israeli diplomat Abba Eban who made the following sage observation: “Men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all the other alternatives.” • John Tyler fathered 15 children, more than any other U.S. president in history. He also holds the distinction of being the oldest president with living grandchildren. Tyler was born in 1790, and his son Lyon Gardiner Tyler was born in 1853. Lyon Gardiner, in turn, had children at a rather advanced age for fatherhood. Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr. was born in 1924, when his father was 71, and Harrison Ruffin Tyler was born in 1928. Both men were still living in 2012, and the younger of the brothers maintained the Tyler family historic home, Sherwood Forest.

• The shamrock is often associated with Ireland, so you might be surprised to learn that it’s not the country’s national symbol. The official symbol is actually a Celtic harp, which makes Ireland the only country in the world to have a musical instrument for its national emblem. • It’s been reported that Napoleon Bonaparte was afraid of cats. • According to a recent survey of married people in the United States, fully one-quarter of respondents admitted to receiving a traffic ticket and hiding from their spouse. Allow Me To Extend You An Invitation By Ronda Addy

The type of wedding invitation you choose goes a long way toward setting the overall theme and feel of your wedding. If you are having a casual wedding, you don’t want invitations with a lot of frills. You do, however, want your invitations to look more professional than those for a kid’s birthday party. The number of guests you are inviting to your wedding may determine whether you make your own invitations or purchase them. If you are having a small to medium-sized wedding, creating your own invitations won’t be that hard. If you are planning a large wedding, creating your own invitations will take a lot of time and effort you probably don’t have. Regardless which way you go, make sure you proofread your invitations for errors and create or purchase just the right amount. There really is no right or wrong design for wedding invitations. It is your wedding and the invitations should reflect that. If you are having a themed wedding, your invitations should illustrate that theme, of course, but ultimately, the choice is yours. Selecting a favorite font or lettering style is one way to personalize your special day. There are various styles of invitations to choose from: accordion style, tri- or bi-fold, or a single sheet of paper. Remember, formal, lavish weddings require a formal style, while simpler, casual weddings require an informal style. There are also hundreds of styles of paper to choose from in various thicknesses. Buying your invitations will offer you less of a selection than if you make them yourself. Do-it-yourselfers need to remember that thicker paper works better for invitations that will not be folded and medium-weight paper for invitations that will be folded. Depending upon your calligraphy skills, you could also use parchment paper for your invitations. Along with the invitations, you will need RSVP cards and stamped return envelopes. You can make your own RSVPs

and envelopes to match your invitations or buy them from a stationery store. RSVP cards and envelopes are available for most invitations. There is some etiquette involved in the wording and addressing of invitations. This includes: • Spell out all dates and times. Don’t use 5:00 or October 16. Instead, state “five o’clock in the evening on the sixteenth of October.” • Abbreviate Mr., Mrs. and Jr. but spell out titles like “doctor.” • Only use punctuation between the city and state and after abbreviations. • Spell out all states on envelopes. • Don’t include an RSVP for invitations to the wedding ceremony only. • Indicate on the inner envelope of invitations to single guests

5

that they can bring a guest. • Don’t include “and guest” on the inner envelope of invitations to single guests who are bringing someone you know personally. • Send only one invitation to unmarried couples who live together. List their names alphabetically and on separate lines. • Send guests who are living together but are not a couple their own separate invitations. • Send children over 18 their own invitation, whether they live at home or not. List children under 18 who live at home on the inner envelope; do not use the term “and family.” There is nothing set in stone that says everyone has to observe the same rules when it comes to selecting and sending their wedding invitations. It’s only natural for you to want to put your own personal stamp on your wedding invitations. After all, it is your special day.

The Light’s On

By Tresa Erickson

You slide into your vehicle after a long day at work, eager to get home, kick off your shoes and take it easy, when you see it. One of the warning lights on your instrument panel is shining bright, indicating that all is not well with your vehicle. Ugh! The instrument panels on most vehicles consist of a variety of red and yellow lights that let drivers know when there is a problem with their vehicle. Some lights are more cause for concern than others. Here is a brief description of the warning lights you might see on your vehicle and what you should do in the event they occur. Service Engine Soon This light may also be labeled “Check Engine” and can be triggered by any number of problems from a loose gas cap to a legitimate issue with the engine. As long as your vehicle drives fine, there is no reason for you to panic. You should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Air Bag Readiness This light indicates there is a problem with your air bags and you

need to have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Don’t ignore the warning and take a chance on air bag failure in an accident. Anti-Lock or ABS This light indicates the anti-lock feature on your brakes has been disabled and you should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Your brakes will continue to work, but if you get into a situation where you have to brake hard, the wheels could lock up. Engine Oil This light indicates the oil pressure is low and you need to have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don’t ignore the warning and continue to drive your vehicle, or you could risk extensive damage to the engine. Low Engine Coolant This light indicates the engine coolant is low and you should address the problem right away. Shut off your vehicle, wait for the engine to cool and then check the coolant level. Add some if needed. The light may go off. If it doesn’t, you should have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible. Engine Coolant Temperature This light indicates the temperature of the engine is beyond the safe maximum and you should have your vehicle serviced immediately. Don’t ignore the warning and continue to drive your vehicle, or you could risk extensive damage to the engine.

Battery Voltage This light indicates the battery is no longer being charged and you should address the problem right away. You have about 20 minutes of driving left before your vehicle shuts down completely, so you should turn off all unnecessary electrical accessories and have the battery checked. You may just need a new battery, or you could be experiencing some other problem with your electrical system.

• “Before traveling, I write down the numbers, expiration dates and contact information for any credit cards I plan to bring with me. I keep one copy hidden in my luggage, and another is left with a friend back home. This way, if anything happens to my wallet, I can easily call and cancel cards and arrange for replacements.” -- R.E. in New York • “When getting ready to entertain, I use sticky notes to organize my serving pieces. For each dish, I make two sticky notes. I label the dishes and set them out on the buffet. When I am satisfied with the arrangement, I remove one sticky note and attach it to the place the dish will remain, and the dish goes to the kitchen, still labeled until it’s filled.” -- W. in Texas • Lipstick on your linens? Dab with petroleum jelly, then dish soap. Then launder as usual. Be sure the stain is removed before you dry the linens. • “If you have trouble with your pantyhose, give them a spray with an anti-static spray first. Then put them on. They seem to slide up better, and it’s much easier to get a grip on them. Also, it seems to keep them from running so easily.” -- D.V. in Washington • A clean windshield not only offers a good view, it’s safer! If your windshield blades still look good but are smearing, wipe them down with a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol. If the cotton pulls off on the blade, it’s time to replace. If not, the alcohol will likely clean up that smudge. • Natural peanut butter fan? Store your jar upside down. The oil will settle to the top, and when you flip it over, it will be less messy to stir. No peanut oil sloshing down the side of the jar! A: Your Montblanc was made in 1936; the Parker, 1932; and the rare Chilton, 1936. According to several price guides I consulted, they are each valued in the $500 to $600 range. Lisa Anderson is president of the Pen Collectors of American and might be able to provide you with additional information. Her contact addresses are P.O.
