• In 1977, Ken Olson, president, chairman and founder of Digital Equipment Company, made the following regrettable statement: “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” • Gross fact of the day: Half of the bacteria in the human mouth haven’t even been identified yet by science. • The drug Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic, used mainly to treat infestations of worms. The people who have been helped by this medication might be surprised to learn that the drug was developed through research spurred by a fungus found growing on the golf shoe of a botanist. • If you’re a centenarian, you might want to consider moving to New Mexico. In that state, there is a law declaring that everyone 100 and older is tax-exempt. • Unless you were around on April 17, 1964, you may not be aware of the hullabaloo caused by the introduction of

the Mustang. In Seattle, a truck driver was so distracted by a display of new Mustangs that he crashed his cement truck through the window of the dealership. In Chicago, so many people were trying to crowd into the cars in a showroom that the dealer had to lock all the vehicle doors. A dealer in New Jersey had only one Mustang, so he auctioned it off. The winner of the auction insisted on sleeping in his new car that night, just to make sure nobody else got it before his check cleared. • Arizonans take note: Hunting camels is illegal in your state. • If you’re like the hypothetical average person, your mouth will create 10,000 gallons of saliva over the course of your lifetime. ••• Thought for the Day: “A pint of sweat saves a gallon of blood.” -- General George S. The Emancipation Proclamation had less to do with ending slavery than saving the crumbling union. • On July 23, 1918, Della Sorenson kills the first of her seven victims in Nebraska. SGT Jesse Marvin Lhotka “AKA: Loddie” Jesse Marvin Lhotka was born March 10, 1980 in Appleton, Mn to Beverly and Donald Lhotka. He soon had five younger siblings Amollia, Vanessa, Sonja, Quinton, and Amy Jo. Jesse attended BBE elementary in Brooten, Mn and graduated high school from LqPV in Madison, Mn. Jesse enjoyed playing cards, bingo, Monopoly, outside activities, and learning how to invent and make “loads” of money! For his twelfth birthday he asked his mom to enroll him in a “Wall Street 101” class, Jesse’s many friends included people he had known since he was born, loyalty was very important to him and his friends knew that they could always count on him. Jesse was also very funny. He would do anything to make his family, friends, or even strangers laugh. If you were lucky to be part of his joke, he enjoyed knowing you thought he was funny, because he certainly agreed. Jesse graduated from St. Cloud State with a B.S. in Finance. He was lucky to find a job soon after and settled into a home with his future wife Stacey in Alexandria. Jesse and Stacey were married September 18, 2004 and Jesse cried while the pastor spoke about the hardship they would face while he was deployed. But the newly married couple knew their deep connection and love for each other could withstand anything, even war. They maintained their relationship through calls, letters, and care packages, looking forward to Jesse’s furlough that would come in May of 2005, he planned to attend his sister Sonja’s graduation and spend a lot of quality with friends and family. Unfortunately, that visit never came to be, as Jesse was killed by an IED on February 21, 2005 in Bagdad. Before he died he saved the life of the gunner before his humvee rolled over. After the soldiers secured the area, Jesse, David Day, Jason Timmerman and Kortney Clemons were carrying a man on a stretcher to a waiting MEDVAC when the IED exploded. Kortney lost a leg, but survived and went on to write a book called “Amped” about his experience in Iraq and his quest to compete in the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing. The other men also each left a legacy of love and selfless service that all of us who miss them respect and remember every day. The first annual L.T.D. motorcycle memorial ride was held in 2006 and continues to this day drawing 800-1,000 people. The memorial was created and maintained by the soldiers who had served with the men and reminds us every year of their great sacrifice and memory. Jesse is forever missed and remembered by his wife, mother, siblings, friends, and fellow soldiers. Have a “Sammie” for us and don't forget "it’s not goodbye, it’s see you later…"
1st LT Jason Gary Timmerman
“There is no greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” - John 15:13 Jason was born on March 20, 1980 in Marshall MN the 3rd son of Gary & Pat Timmerman. His birth was a very fast one; he seemed in such a hurry to get into this world! This caused some problems and Jason had to remain in the hospital for 13 days under treatment and many tests. Nothing was found wrong with our newborn son. We realized then, that even though our hopes had been high for a daughter, God wanted us to really appreciate this special boy. Jason’s older siblings, Eric & Craig couldn’t have been prouder of their new brother. Five years later Jason’s 3rd brother, Travis, was born. From the beginning, Jason took Travis under his wing, always protecting him. Jason was a very easy, fun child. He never needed much scolding when doing wrong. His heart was so tender; a stern look would bring a tear. He took pride in each little accomplishment, and would give you that proud smile and look that said, “I did it”! When asked to do a chore or any task, you didn’t have to ask again. You knew Jason would get it done and it would be done right the first time. Responsibility just came naturally to him. Jason met Teresa at college. Both being HS math majors, they had so much in common. Their dates were often simple, like going to check the Good Will trailer that Jason took charge of, cooking a meal together, being outdoors and just enjoying each other’s company. They soon knew they wanted spend the rest of their lives together. Jason and Teresa were married on Dec 20th, 2003, the happiest day of both of their lives. They had a beautiful honeymoon camping the next summer, out in nature, where they both loved to be. They truly enjoyed their short lives together and loved spending time with their families and friends. Jason joined the guards when he was a junior in HS. He always knew what he wanted from life, which included serving his country. When he wore his uniforms, especially his class A’s, there wasn’t a prouder man on earth. Every piece of clothing was perfect, including the best-shined shoes in the group. In basic and advanced training, he would make a few extra bucks shining shoes for his buddies. Jason was especially excited and proud when Travis joined the guards. This brought a special closeness between the two of them. Many have said that Jason accomplished more in his short 25 years here on earth than most of us do in a lifetime. Taking responsibility and helping others was always Jason’s top priorities in life, and what he was dong the day he, David and Jesse were killed. Jason was so proud of what he and his military brothers were doing in Iraq and we know that if put in the same situation, he would do again what he did on Feb 21st, 2005, that is the kind of man Jason was – There is no greater love than this…….. Gone from our Lives, but never our Hearts!
SSG. David F. Day
David was born on October 29, 1979 and grew up in Morris Minnesota, the youngest of three children. Dave liked everything to do with the outdoors, especially if it involved something with an engine on it. Weather it was mowing the lawn at 5 years old, going 100mph on a snowmobile, or driving his SHO. While in Boy Scouts David was elected by his peers into the brotherhood of the Order of the Arrow and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. After graduating high school he joined the Army National Guard, and six months later left for basic training at Fort Sill, OK. During basic his platoon received Honor Platoon and David received four out of the five awards given to the Battery of 156 soldiers. David received the Army Values Award for integrity, the Top Physical Fitness Award, the Highest Marksmanship Award, and Honor Graduate Award. David also tied with another soldier for Distinguished Honor Graduate, the highest commendation in basic training. Law enforcement was his choice of career in civilian life. David started in Morris as a Community Service Officer for the Morris Police Department and worked with the Stevens County Sheriff’s Department. David attended Law Enforcement training at Alexandria Technical College and finished at Normandale College in Minneapolis. While attending Normandale, David worked as a Community Service Officer for St. Louis Park until he was sworn in as a Police Officer in 2004. In October 2004 David married Amy, his high school sweetheart and the love of his life. And in December of 2004 David’s National Guard unit deployed to Iraq. On February 21, 2005 David died in Baghdad, Iraq at the age of 25. He was carrying a fellow soldier on a stretcher that had been injured in a Humvee accident to an awaiting helicopter when an IED was set off. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart for his bravery in Iraq. It was said after his death, One only needs to know David’s police badge number to understand his commitment and the way he lived the army core values, the promise he swore to as a police officer, the oath he took as an Eagle Scout, and his service to others. SLPPD Badge 247 or 24-7 David now rests in the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley. He will be forever in our hearts.

Glass Rolling Pin
Q: I have a small collection of vintage rolling pins. One of the more unusual ones is made of glass with a stopper on the end. What was the reason for this design? -- Phyllis, Stigler, Okla. A: The glass rolling pins could be filled with cold water, making it easier to roll out pie crusts. These are collectible and often sell in the $25 to $35 range. ••• Q: I realize you don’t do appraisals, but can you recommend someone who can so I can find out the value of a 165-year-old dinner plate that I have. It belonged to the last king of France and has been documented by the Library of Congress. -- Linda, Billings, Mont. A: I suggest you contact two of the better auction houses, Sotheby’s, 1334 York Ave., New York, NY 10021; and Christie’s, 20 Rockefeller Plaza, New York, NY 10020. Each has experts on staff who might be able to help you. ••• Q: I have a fountain pen that my uncle purchased in 1941 when he was in the U.S. Army. I have enclosed pictures of the pen and wonder if it has any value other than being a family keepsake. -- Ruby, Peoria, Ariz. A: You left out an important piece of information,
namely the maker of the fountain pen. There are several excellent price guides available at amazon.com that might be helpful. Check out www.thefountainpennetwork.com, one of the better websites for collectors. ••• Q: I have a land patent document signed by President Benjamin Harrison in 1892. I would like to know its value. -- Rogene, Grand Junction, Colo. A: One of the better autograph dealers is Brian Kathenes, P.O. Box 482, Hope, NJ 07844; brian@nacvalue. com; and www.nacvalue.com. Kathenes is considered an autograph expert and also is a certified appraiser. •••

TIP: When contacting an appraiser, it is always a good idea to restrict your dealings with that person to just an appraisal. Never allow an appraiser to determine the value of an item and then offer to purchase it for that amount. This is considered unethical, especially by members of the American Society of Appraisers. If an appraisal seems too low, don’t hesitate to contact a second expert.
