• You might be surprised to learn that Italians spend more time on social media than people of any other nationality. • In medieval times in Great Britain, those accused of a crime could prove their innocence (or guilt) in trial by battle. This law was unused and nearly forgotten for centuries. Then, in 1817, a man named Abraham Thornton was charged with murder in the death of a young woman named Mary Ashford. The evidence against Thornton was nearly overwhelming, but he claimed the right to trial by battle against his accuser. Since the law was still on the books, the court decided it had no choice but to grant his request. Thornton’s accuser was William Ashford, the victim’s brother, but since he declined to appear on the field of battle, Thornton was freed. Shortly thereafter, trail by battle was officially abolished in the country. • With 1.45 million lightning strikes per year, Florida experiences more lightning than any other state in the country. Central Florida is unofficially known as the Lightning Capital of the World. • If you’re like 70 percent of Americans, you hate the idea of your parents moving in with you, according to a recent survey. TIPs plays an important role in helping stop poachers by the mere fact that everyone can report a violation. It is as easy as one phone call, 1.888.OVERBAG (683.7224), and it may be the biggest call you ever make! South Dakota's Turn In Poachers (TIPs) Program was started in 1984 with the help of concerned sportsmen across the state when it was discovered that two large bull elk in the Black Hills had been killed and left to waste in the field. Within one year, the program generated significant public interest and it was so successful that it was implemented statewide. Since the Program began, there have been over 10,000 investigations initiated that have resulted in approximately 3,400 arrests. Poachers have paid over $665,000 in criminal fines and an additional $512,000 in liquidated civil damages have been assessed to these violators as well. TIPs has paid out more than $136,000 in cash rewards to individuals that have supplied information that has been critical in achieving these results. And while the cash reward provides a financial incentive to report violations, when all is said and done, many people donate the award back to the Program.
The main goals of the TIPs Program are to: • Increase the awareness of poaching problems and resulting loss of recreational opportunity; • Actively investigate all poaching violations in response to citizen reports; • Protect the state's fish and wildlife to ensure future generations have the opportunity to enjoy these resources; and lastly, • Serve as a deterrent to those who may consider taking fish and wildlife illegally.

• On Oct. 12, 1492, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus reaches the New World. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world’s size. The expedition probably first landed at Watling Island in the Bahamas. Columbus later sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China. • On Oct. 10, 1845, The United States Naval Academy opens in Annapolis, Md., with 50 midshipmen students and seven professors. Known as the Naval School until 1850, the curriculum included mathematics and navigation, gunnery and steam, chemistry, English, natural philosophy and French. • On Oct. 8, 1871, flames spark in the Chicago barn of Patrick and Catherine O’Leary, igniting a two-day blaze that kills hundreds of people, destroys 17,450 buildings and leaves 100,000 homeless.
Legend has it that the fire started when a cow kicked over a lantern in the O’Leary barn. • On Oct. 9, 1936, harnessing the power of the mighty Colorado River, the Hoover Dam begins sending electricity over 266 miles of transmission lines to Los Angeles. The central reason for the dam, however, was the collection, preservation and distribution of water. • On Oct. 7, 1943, Rear Adm. Shigematsu Sakaibara, commander of the Japanese garrison on Wake Island, orders the execution of 96 Americans POWs, claiming they were trying to make radio contact with U.S. forces. The execution of those POWs remains one of the more brutal episodes of the war in the Pacific. • On Oct. 13, 1953, the world’s first art museum on wheels, the Artmobile, opens in Fredericksburg, Va., carrying 16 paintings by 15thand 16th-century masters. Today, there are dozens of Artmobileinspired museums on wheels in cities and towns across the United States and around the world. • On Oct. 11, 1975, “Saturday Night Live,” a topical comedy sketch show featuring Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin and Laraine Newman, makes its debut on NBC.
