Publisher's Corner by Sean Athey Hello Everyone! Bbbbrrrrr.. hope you are staying warm out there. My fingers are a little cool on the keyboard here. Thanks for reading this issue of Tidbits, there's a lot of good stuff in this one so enjoy!

The cold really makes those Spring days seem pretty far away. One thing my family has looked forward to each June was the Fort Sisseton Historical Festival in Northeast South Dakota. It has always been an impromptu family reunion of sorts and one particular year, as a boy, I was allowed to bring one friend along. So that year my buddy Wade and I did the tough-guy camping-on-the-prairie with our sleeping bags next to the fire thing. We had had a long day of running around the fort, taking it all in, and pretty soon we were out like lights. My parents were tucked away in the camper and we were sleeping under the stars.... it was perfect... until the camper door came crashing open in the middle of the night. It seems that sometime in the night Wade had kicked and rolled enough that the bottom end of the sleeping bag had gotten dangerously close to the fire, well close enough that it was on fire! The guy crashing out of the camper was my father who had just happened to take a look out the window to see if the fire was out yet... umm, not quite out, I guess. We had camped next the slough outside the fort this year so my dad was caught in a dilemma... do I drag the sleeping bag, kid and all, to the water to put it out, find other water or stomp it out. Seeing as putting someone with their legs and arms in a sleeping bag in a body of water doesn't sound like it has a good ending, he opted to smother the flames with another camp blanket. Of course this happened pretty fast, so I never even got out of my sleeping bag before it was over. Dad went back inside, I went back to sleep and the funny part is the Wade never woke up during the whole thing. We had to tell him about it the next day. He did say his feet seemed a little colder later in the night, though.

Try Medicines First for Enlarged Prostate DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have to trot to the bathroom many times during the day and many more times at night. Is this due to my prostate gland? I’m 74 and wasn’t bothered by bathroom visits a year ago. Does this mean surgery for me?

How do I know if this is prostate cancer? -- R.R. ANSWER: Odds are you have benign prostatic hyperplasia, the official name for a large prostate gland. In their 40s, a quarter of males have a gland that’s larger than normal. In their 70s, 80 percent of men have an enlarged gland. Not all these men have symptoms like repeated trips to the bathroom, a hard time starting the urinary stream and a decrease in the force of the stream.

The prostate gland lies directly below the urinary bladder, and the bladder’s drainage tube, the urethra, runs through the gland. A large gland presses on the bladder and obstructs the urethra. That’s why many men with a large gland have to run to the bathroom so often -- they cannot completely empty their bladder.

You don’t have to jump to surgery right off the bat. Medicines often solve the problem. One class of medicines stops the forceful bladder contractions that signal an urgent need to void. Uroxatral, Flomax and Rapaflo are examples of this drug family. Their effect is seen within a week. Another family of drugs shrinks the gland. Avodart and Proscar are two such medicines. Their effect isn’t seen for up to six months. Combining both classes of drug is another method of treatment.

If medicine therapy fails, a variety of surgical procedures can remedy the problem.

You don’t know if an enlarged gland has cancer cells in it.

The PSA blood test, flawed as it is, provides some evidence for cancer. Biopsy of the gland is the ultimate cancer test. A urologist will solve this problem for you.

Holiday Oatmeal Cookies

To create a cookie “kit,” layer dry ingredients in a mason jar, cover the lid with gingham fabric, attach a wooden spoon and a copy of the recipe, and tie with raffia.

1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened 3/4 cup (packed) brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 cups old-fashioned oats, uncooked 1 cup raisins 1 package (6-ounce) semisweet chocolate chips (1 cup) 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. On waxed paper, combine flour, baking soda, and salt.

2. In large bowl, with mixer on medium speed, beat butter and brown and granulated sugars until creamy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat in egg and vanilla.

Reduce speed to low; gradually beat in flour mixture just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl. With spoon, stir in oats, raisins, and chocolate chips.

3. Drop dough by heaping measuring tablespoons, 2 inches apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet. Bake cookies 13 to 15 minutes or until tops are golden. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool.

4. Repeat with remaining dough. Store cookies in tightly covered container at room temperature up to 1 week or in freezer up to 3 months. Makes 4 dozen cookies.

In Italy, ‘Santa’ Rides a Broomstick

In Italy, the Feast of the Epiphany, celebrated on Jan. 6 with a national holiday, is very much like our traditional Christmas celebrations in North America. Epiphany commemorates the 12th day of Christmas when the three Wise Men arrived at the manger bearing gifts for Baby Jesus. The traditional Christmas holiday season in Italy lasts through Epiphany.

Epiphany’s equivalent of Father Christmas, La Befana, arrives on her broomstick during the night of Jan. 5 and fills children’s stockings with sweets and toys. Like our very own Santa, La Befana will leave coal for all those naughty children! It’s said she carries a broom to sweep away the old year to make room for the new.

Legend has it that the night before the Wise Men arrived at the manger, they stopped at the shack of an old woman to ask directions. They invited her to come along, but she said she was busy sweep-

ing and cleaning her house. Later that night, she saw a great light in the sky and decided to join the Wise Men bearing gifts that had belonged to her child who had died. She got lost and never found the manger.

Now La Befana flies around on her broomstick each year on the 11th night, bringing gifts to children in hopes that she might find the Baby Jesus.

La Befana is represented as an old lady, wearing a black shawl and covered in soot who enters houses through the chimney carrying a bag or hamper filled with her gifts. Children hang their stockings on the evening of Jan. 5 awaiting her arrival.

You’ll be surprised at how yummy such a simple recipe can be!

1 cup (2 sticks) butter (no substitutions), softened 6 tablespoons granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 bag (8-ounce) walnuts, chopped 1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. In large bowl, with mixer on medium speed, beat butter, granulated sugar and vanilla until creamy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. 2. Shape dough by rounded measuring teaspoons into 1-inch balls.

Place balls, 1 inch apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet. Bake cookies 13 to 15 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned.

3. Place confectioners’ sugar in pie plate. While cookies are hot, with metal spatula, transfer 4 or 5 cookies at a time to pie plate with confectioners’ sugar. Gently turn cookies with fork to generously coat with sugar. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool completely.

4. Repeat with remaining dough and confectioners’ sugar. Store cookies in tightly covered container at room temperature up to 1 week, or in freezer up to 3 months. Dust with additional confectioners’ sugar before serving if you like. Makes 6 1/2 dozen cookies.

Save Big on Real Christmas Trees

The Christmas tree is the centerpiece of your home during the holiday season. While some people make their lives easier with a fake tree, nothing beats the smell of a freshly cut tree.

Unfortunately, not everyone can afford to drop $50 or $100 on a tree that will be around for all of two weeks, and there don’t seem to be many options for saving money on one.

So in the spirit of Christmas, Michael Bondi, professor of forestry with Oregon State University Extension Services, shares his top tips to save money on a real tree this holiday season.

1. Shop Around It’s the most commonsense advice you can get when shopping for anything, but there is a specific method to shopping around when it comes to live Christmas trees.

“The prices can vary quite a bit,” says Bondi, who explains that big-box retailers have the best prices, but the trees tend to not be as fresh because they are purchased in bulk.

Further, you’re always sacrificing on customer service when you shop at a big box. Garden centers tend to have the freshest trees and decent customer service, but the prices are greater than a big box. Another option? Look for a nonprofit or charity that’s selling trees. Not only can you get them on the cheap, you also can help out your community while you buy.

2. Shop for Species “Trees that grow faster are less expensive because they can be brought to market faster,” says Bondi. Conversely, trees that grow more slowly are more expensive. This isn’t just due to the amount of time it takes to grow. Slowergrowing trees tend to be a little fussier.

Balsam and Douglas firs are among the least-expensive trees, with more exotic trees like Nordman and Turkish firs being on the other end of the spectrum. Noble firs and Frasier firs are in the middle. For what it’s worth, the smell of Christmas basically is the smell of a Douglas fir, so don’t feel like you’re missing out if you go for one of the lessexpensive trees.

3. Accept “Charlie Brown” Trees Everyone is afraid of getting a “Charlie Brown” tree, but not only does Bondi think there’s nothing wrong with such trees, he also has fond family memories of them. As a child,

his father often would buy three trees, cut the branches off of two and drill them into the third. “My father was very artistic,” says Bondi, “that was his way of putting his personal flair on the tree.”

Even if you aren’t the artistic type, a Charlie Brown tree might not be as bad as you think. Not only are they significantly less expensive, but there might not be anything wrong with them for your purposes. “One of the beautiful things about real trees is the variation,” says Bondi, “If you’re going to put a tree up against the wall, a few missing branches don’t really matter.”

4. Wait for Prices to Come Down ... and Haggle The closer you get to Christmas, the cheaper a tree will be. “If there are still a lot of trees left on the lot,” says Bondi, “they’re going to start getting anxious about selling them.” If you go tree shopping after the first week of December and there’s still a glut of trees left on the lot, don’t be afraid to haggle a little.

So to save money on live Christmas trees this holiday season, wait a week or so to shop, aim for cheaper species of tree, don’t be afraid to haggle and don’t be looking for perfection. Best of all, you’re adding to your savings while buying from American farmers, being green and pumping money into the local economy. What could be better than that?

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Despicable Me 2” (PG) -- Once a dastardly supervillain, the sinister Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) became a doting father in the last movie. With his three adopted daughters (and a crew of goofy yellow minions), Gru must undertake a daunting mission: enter the dating scene. This mission, however, is interrupted by another mission from an Anti-Villain Agent, Lucy (Kristen Wiig) -- Gru and company have to foil a supervillain scheme at a shopping mall.

The plot sounds a little unwieldy, but it barely gets in the way. The real focus of the film is the slapstick humor of the minions and the aggressive cuteness of the kids. It’s like a feature-length serving of oldfashioned cartoon humor. Throw in a few lines that will make parents chuckle between rounds of 3-D showboating, and you’ve got a sequel that competes with its predecessor.

“Berberian Sound Studios” (R) -- A British sound technician (Toby Jones) takes a job making cringeinducing sound effects for Italian horror movies -- a job that burrows into his mind and brings up his personal demons. In the sound booth, he brutalizes radishes and other vegetables to get the perfect crunch and squish that simulates murder. The camera gets up close and intimate with the destruction. The horror is all in your mind, as old-fashioned sound engineering injects terror through your ears. It’s an utterly creepy and fun experience.

Goofus Glass

Q: I have inherited a bowl that has been identified as “Goofus Glass.” What exactly is “Goofus Glass”? -- Beth, East Greenwich, R.I.

A: According to David Shotwell, author of “Glass A to Z,” Goofus Glass -- also known as Mexican Ware, Hooligan Glass and Pickle Glass -- is an inexpensive type of luster-painted glassware that has been sprayed before firing. Shotwell points out that Harry Northwood was a major maker of this type of glass during the late 1800s.

Some of the companies that produced it include Crescent Glass, Imperial Glass and LaBelle Glass, from 1890 until about 1930. Incidentally, this type of glass often was given away at regional carnivals and fairs as premiums.

Remember Pets in Need This Holiday Season DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have two dogs and a cat, and I love them all dearly.

I also try to make things a little better for pets that don’t have homes by helping out two days a month at the local shelter.

Please let your readers know that they can make a huge difference in dogs’ and cats’ lives even with a small contribution. If they can’t give their time, they can donate money, food or other pet-care items. Sign me -- Caring in Kalamazoo DEAR KALAMAZOO: You told them, and thanks! The holiday season offers the most opportunities to donate, no matter what amount, to a number of causes benefiting pets. So while you’re busy making gift lists and holiday preparations, don’t forget to include pets in need somewhere in those thoughts.

Most local shelters have Web pages online where you can find out about upcoming fundraising events, see what food or supplies are needed, or find a contact number or e-mail address to learn more.

Those that don’t have a website often have listings or dedicated space in the town or community newspaper.

Major pet-care organizations and petsupply stores have fundraising drives throughout the year, while local organizations sometimes hold supply drives and other events with the help of local businesses or municipalities.

You also can donate your free time to help out at local animal shelters. Contact your nearest shelter to see if opportunities are available, how much time is required and if additional training is needed for certain volunteer positions.
