Publisher's Corner by Sean Athey Hello Everyone! So... are you all conditioned to winter with that cold stretch last week? I know I am. It is interesting when 20 degrees above zero is talked about as a "heat wave"... at least we got a bit of snow to cover things up... my backyard looks better with a blanket of the white stuff to hide all the things I didn't get taken care of this fall. Here's another thought for you... Winter doesn't officially start until December 21st, I think Mother Nature was out of the loop on that one. Tidbits Question of the week: "Why do you publish a paper instead of just putting this on a website." - Harold from Watertown, SD Well, I prefer the permanence of putting ink on paper. I have the very first issue that Lynette and I put out sitting right here. The information, jokes and puzzles are all still as viable as the day it came off the press over a year and a half ago. We also want Tidbits to be available for everyone to enjoy, young or old, rich or the rest of us. Once an issue is out there it entertains our readers and works for our advertisers without any other infrastructure, plans, services or devices. Now... are we anti-technology? Not by a long shot. Modern technology is what gives us the ability to create a Tidbits paper each week and bring it to your town. OK, back to the part of the question about a website... As many people know already, Tidbits of the Lake Area has a great website on which the paper is available to read on your computer, tablet or mobile device. You can also check area events, submit a joke, place a classified ad, read some jokes and quotes, enter the reader contest, click ads on our community pages to check out advertisers websites, read Publisher's Corner archived articles or drop us line if you have any questions or comments. We have worked hard to make www.LakeAreaTidbits.com an integral part of the Tidbits experience... all with no popups, pop-overs, redirects and such... and every ad on our website is a local advertiser from right here in Northeast South Dakota and West Central Minnesota.
procedure... for the better part of an hour! After working at it, we got pretty good and got it the top of the road. At this point, the cross road went left and right... uphill both ways. We looked at each and couldn't believe our only option was to roll the car down the same road we had just spent the last hour pushing the car up for one chance at it starting. So I hopped in and got ready, kind of like an airplane pre-flight... switch on - check. Second gear - check. Praying to God - check.... here we go! Got up enough speed, popped the clutch - she fired up - woo-hoo! At this point the dugout mound is coming at me fast, so I took it out of gear - still revving the engine to keep it running - and hit the brake with my left foot and came to a stop about six inches from the dirt mound. I think back now and wonder if it would have been like the Dukes of Hazard's General Lee if I didn't get it stopped! Yee-haw! Anyhow, we loaded back up, made it to town - BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY - and went about our lives. Thanks for reading and don't forget to check out www.LakeAreaTidbits.com. Have a great week and don't be the crazy driver out there we all talk about - slow down and get there!!

Last week I told you a camping story and I got so many comments I thought I'd tell another. My wife Lynette and I just celebrated 20 years of marriage last October and this story goes all the way back to the early days... before the kids came along. Right out of college, we had 3 part time jobs between us that fit into four work days so we had three days off in a row for that summer. This was out in Spearfish, SD in the beautiful Black Hills which we both loved. After some discussion we made the decision to camp for the summer in the National Forest. So we loaded up the car with everything we needed and worked our jobs, staying with friends for three nights and then we would head up into the forest, find some old logging roads and see how far our little Chevy Chevette would get. This was before the cell phones got popular, so we were really cutoff from everything.. sounds good, huh? Generally it was the most relaxing time I have ever spent, but occasionally we would get thrown a curve ball... like this one... We had traveled down an old logging road until we came to a dugout in the road that the Forest Service used to keep off-roaders from going any further. There we set up camp and had awesome weather for three days. On the morning of the fourth day, which was the start of our work week, we got up early, packed the car jumped in and turned the key... nothing. The Chevette we had was a four speed, so with a dead battery we could push start it pretty easily, except for the fact that the road was all down hill to the dugout and mound so we couldn't go forward. Well, we started to talk over options and decided it was a long way to any road that might have traffic and we hadn't seen anyone for three days, so waiting for someone to come by was out. We quickly realized our only option was to push the car back up the road. As we all know, cars aren't light, so we took out everything that wasn't bolted down in the car and placed a log under the wheel and began to rock the little car until we got enough momentum to push it two or three feet then put the log under the wheel to hold it in place, catch our breath and repeat the

Grandfather Clock
Q: I have a grandfather clock that I have been told was made in 1820 or maybe 1880. I would like to know how much it is worth. -- Barbara, Albuquerque, N.M.
A: Let me see if I have this correct. You have a clock, and apparently don’t know the maker and aren’t even certain when it was made. Even though I can’t help you, you do have several options. You can hire the services of a professional appraiser to document and research your clock. This would not be a free service, but in my opinion it is well worth the fee since it is not a guess but an expert opinion. Your second option is to contact clock dealers in your city for their input. One of the better general references is the “Antique Trader Clocks Price Guide” edited by Kyle Husfloen (Krause Books, $17.95). This book features more than 1,400 entries covering timepieces from the 17th through the 20th centuries. ••• Q: I have two Edison machines and am trying to find cylinders to play on them. I have searched antiques stores throughout my area but have been unable to locate more than two or three. Can you help me? -- Steve, Rochester, N.Y. A: Richard Gesner is the owner of The Music Connection, New Hampshire’s largest and oldest record shop. In addition to LPs, 45s,
December 16, 2013
78s, cassettes, compact discs and 8-tracks, Gesner has an excellent selection of Edison cylinders. He also stocks steel needles, record sleeves and Discwasher record-cleaning kits. His contact information is 1711 South Willow St., Manchester, NH 03103. ••• Q: I found a record in my dad’s collection that I think could be valuable. It is Carl Sandburg’s “Flat Rock Ballads” on Decca. -- Bob, El Paso, Texas A: I found your recording referenced in “Goldmine Record Album Price Guide” by Dave Thompson (Krause, $27.99). According to Thompson, your record was issued in 1959 and is worth $20. The recently released 7th edition of this excellent guide is a must for collectors, since it has updated prices for more than 100,000 American vinyl LPs issued since 1948. It is easy to use with a well-organized format. Write to Larry Cox in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox is unable to personally answer all reader questions. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Holiday Plants, Foods Put Pets at Risk DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve heard over and over that it’s dangerous for dogs to eat chocolate. My friend told me they shouldn’t eat grapes, either. My dog “Rascal” snapped up two grapes that fell off of a party tray at a recent event I held, and he is just fine. Was my friend wrong? -- Carla in Laredo, Texas DEAR CARLA: Your friend isn’t wrong -- a number of foods that are safe for humans shouldn’t be consumed by dogs. Cats are at risk from certain foods, too. Rascal didn’t suffer any visible effects from eating a couple of grapes, but that might not be the case next time. Eating grapes or raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Chocolate is toxic to dogs -- it can affect their nervous system. Sugar-free candies containing xylitol can cause dogs’ blood pressure to drop, and in large quantities can cause liver failure. Onions, garlic, macadamia nuts and avocados can all be toxic, according to the ASPCA. Most of the above foods also affect cats negatively, as do caffeine, tomatoes and mushrooms. Keep cats away from houseplants, especially lilies. Plants popular around Christmastime, such as holly and poinsettia, are toxic and need to be placed out of reach. Because the holidays are a hectic time, include a plan for keeping your pets safe during get-togethers and parties. Don’t let dogs and cats roam freely during a party or while gifts are being unwrapped. Place them in a quiet room with food and water until wrapping, food crumbs and other dangers are cleared away and you have more time to pay attention to them. 5th Grade Food Drive a Success
From left to right—Mary-Anne Bauer, Nikki Pays, Kari Johnson, Delaney Johnston answers on page 13
By Delaney Johnston and Mary-Anne Bauer
We collected 4 boxes of non-perishable foods. Some things we collected were: Ramen Noodles, boxes of mixes for pancakes, potatoes, and we got much more! We took two boxes to the Milbank Food Pantry and we gave the other two boxes to the Backpack Program. We collected the food for Thanksgiving because it would go to families who wouldn't get meals on Thanksgiving. We had a lot of fun doing things through the process and we hope we can do it again sometime. Thank you to everyone who brought food for the food drive. It was successful!

1. Preheat oven to 325 F. Grease large cookie sheet. In large bowl, stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon salt. With pastry blender or using two knives scissors-fashion, cut in butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in ricotta, dried cherries, pecans, vanilla, lemon peel and eggs until well-combined. 2. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. With floured hands, gently knead dough two or three times to blend. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 10 by 8-inch oval. Fold oval lengthwise, bringing top half over so that bottom of dough extends by about 1 inch. 3. Place stollen on prepared cookie sheet. Bake 55 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Transfer stollen to wire rack; cool completely. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar to coat just before serving if you like. Makes 16 slices. • Each serving: About 205 calories, 10g total fat (5g saturated), 48mg cholesterol, 165mg sodium, 27g total carbs, 1g dietary fiber, 5g protein. Financial Gifts Kids Will Actually Like
With so much materialism surrounding the holidays, it’s nice when you can give a gift that accomplishes more than just adding to someone’s collection of stuff --especially when it comes to gifts for impressionable children. Of course, anyone who has spent more than five minutes around a child knows they can be hard to please, which makes finding a gift that’s both entertaining and educational a tall order. Considering these uncertain economic times, many parents are looking for gift ideas for kids this year that also help teach a lesson or two about savings. Here are five financial gifts for children that will both develop their financial literacy and keep them amused. 1. An Awesome Piggy Bank Saving money is the foundation to developing positive financial behaviors, but it can be a real struggle to convince your kids of that fact. A great way to encourage children to save their money is by giving them an awesome “piggy” bank to keep it in. But don’t worry, gone are the days of boring, ceramic farm animals -- now you can find banks shaped like arcade games, robots -- even Darth Vader. And we all know there’s nothing cooler than Darth Vader.
2. Math “Video Games” “Grand Theft Auto 5” may be the game title of choice this Christmas, but you would probably rather improve your kids’ financial literacy than their criminal history. There are many educational tools on the market that take the form of video games, such as Leapfrog’s Leapster -- a hugely popular and highly rated handheld gaming device for kids age 4 through 9. Like hiding zucchini in your delicious banana nut muffins, there’s nothing more satisfying than tricking your kids into enjoying something that’s -- yuck -- actually good for them. 3. Stock in a (Profitable) Kid-Friendly Company More likely appreciated by somewhat older children, buying stock as a gift is a great option for the young entrepreneur in your life. Choose a company like Disney, Coca Cola, or if you’re feeling generous, Apple, and buy stock in a custodial account for the child. You can buy colorful, single-share stock certificates in some 200 companies -- including Disney, Build-

a-Bear, GameStop, Harley-Davidson, McDonald’s, Nike and Ninendo -- at OneShare (www.oneshare.com). You can tell the child on your gift list that they now own a piece of that company, which is almost as cool as the fact that the investment could be worth a whole lot more by the time they’re an adult. Sure beats a savings bond from Grandma. 4. Cold, Hard Cash It’s hard to go wrong offering a crisp, green bill as a gift, but don’t pass on the opportunity to instill the all important valueof-a-dollar lesson. When giving physical money, it’s best to have a savings goal associated with the gift -- like offering $40 specifically toward the purchase of a new bicycle. In other words, don’t just hand over the money and expect the kid who’s receiving it to put it to good use without some guidance. 5. Their First Wallet Children love it when they’re treated like mini-adults, and nothing says “big kid” like owning a wallet. Depending on the child’s age, you can either give a toy wallet, or a real one to use daily. Either way, kids soon will learn that a wallet is even more fun to own when there’s actually some money inside. Financial gifts for children don’t have to be dull -- with the above gift ideas, entertainment and saving money can go hand in hand. Make Fun Gift Wrap With ‘Box Toppers’ Personalize your wrapped-up gifts for friends and relatives with whimsical extras. These “box toppers” might be little items you would traditionally use as stocking stuffers. But instead of wrapping them or hiding them away in a stocking, attach them to the outside of presents as a decoration in place of or in addition to a ribbon or bow. Box toppers are a great idea for gift-giving kids, too. If your children are using their saved allowance money for holiday shopping, purchasing inexpensive box toppers to spruce up gifts that grown-ups have already purchased is a practical way to stay within a pint-size budget.
To get started, help your kids think of items that reflect the recipient’s personality, such as seed packets for the gardener, paintbrushes for an artist, a guitar pick for a musician, wrist bands for a tennis player, etc. Or, find items that are a clue to what’s inside the package. For example, if you’re giving a cookbook, fasten a set of shiny new measuring spoons to the bow. Top a craft kit with buttons and pipe cleaners, a
box filled with skeins of yarn with a crochet hook, and a toy for Fido with a dog treat. Small family heirlooms also make special box toppers. Treasured items such as a vintage Christmas tree ornament, great auntie’s crocheted doily or a shined up silver baby spoon that have been stored away for years will evoke memories and add charm to the package. Extra ideas: Here are more inexpensive boxtopper items kids will have fun looking for on your family shopping spree: a teething ring for a new baby; snazzy barrettes for little sister; funny refrigerator magnets for Mom and Dad; a bundle of colorful Post-it notes for a teenage cousin; and a packet of herbs for grandma’s special homemade bread. •••

• Try this chef’s trick for a juicy bird: After seasoning, cover the bird with cheesecloth or muslin secured with string. Baste over the cloth every 15 minutes. In the last 20 minutes, remove the cloth so that the skin can crisp. • P.S.G. from South Carolina writes: “For holiday gatherings that you host, delegate table tasks to your children that are age-appropriate: place setting, condiment delivery, refilling water glasses at scheduled intervals, etc. Children like to have a job, and they are better behaved when they have a focus and can make a contribution.” • Plan now for leftovers: Have small plastic containers and zip-top bags in case your guests or family would like to take some home. This is an especially smart thing to do if you are looking to eat healthier. Send Grandma home with a turkey plate and a big slice of chocolate cake! • On Dec. 26, 1908, Jack Johnson becomes the first black American to win the world heavyweight title when he knocks out Canadian Tommy Burns in the 14th round in a championship bout near Sydney, Australia. Johnson held the heavyweight title until 1915. • On Dec. 25, 1914, just after midnight on Christmas morning, German troops fighting in World War I cease firing their guns and artillery, and commence to sing Christmas carols. At points along the eastern and western fronts, Russian, French and British soldiers even heard brass bands joining the Germans in their joyous singing. • On Dec. 28, 1938, silent-film star Florence Lawrence commits suicide in Beverly Hills, Calif. Lawrence also was an inventor: She designed the first “auto signaling arm,” a mechanical turn sig-
nal, along with the first mechanical brake signal. She did not patent these inventions, however, and as a result she received no credit for -- or profit from -- either one. • On Dec. 23, 1946, President Harry Truman appoints an amnesty board to review cases of conscientious objectors who were imprisoned after refusing to serve during World War II. Of the 15,000 violators of the World War II Selective Service Act, only 1,500 were considered entitled to full amnesty. • On Dec. 29, 1956, the New York Times leaks the news that the United States is preparing a major policy statement on the Middle East. The U.S. would oppose any Soviet military intervention in the region, and Middle Eastern powers could count on economic help and military help in opposing any Soviet aggression. © 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.
