THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY (C) 13/14 August 2016

Entrance Antiphon: A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Since the fifth century the Church has held implicitly the belief in the Assumption of the Blessed Mother, body and soul, into heaven. It can de deduced from the Liturgy and the writings of the fathers and Doctors of the Church. The dogma was promulgated by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950. “The Immaculate Virgin, preserved from all stain of original sin, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory, and exalted by the Lord as Queen over all things, so that she might be more fully conformed to her Son, the Lord and conqueror of sin and earth. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s resurrection and an anticipation of our resurrection.” (Lumen Gentium 59, Vatican II Dogmatic Constitution on the Church.)
