This Week: the Octave of Prayer for Christian Unity begins: it runs from 18-25 January. Although it is most regrettable that there will not be a united service of prayer this year, we must give thanks for the ways the Churches are working together in Street Pastors, the Foodbank and now Christians Against Poverty. At least the Prayer Pastors are sharing prayer across the denominational divides as Christians from different traditions meet each Friday evening to pray while the Street Pastors are out on duty. THIS WEEKEND: there will be a retiring collection for the work of the Society for the Protection of the Unborn Child. Please give generously to their vital work.

LET’S TALK: After our very successful session towards the end of last year discussing the role of women in the Church, we turn now to reflect on ATHEISM: do we agree that there seem to be more and more atheists and that they have an increasing voice in society? What are their criticisms of religion and are they valid? In our own experience , how do we react when someone says they do not believe God exists, that the Bible contradicts itself, that religion is a force for evil in the world? Does religion make people better – or can it make them worse? Can someone be good without God? To discuss these and other views, come along to St Mary’s Catholic Club on Monday 23rd January at 7.00pm. All welcome. THE PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL met on Wednesday 10 January and several items came up for discussion on which we would welcome your views. We are thinking of arranging occasional retreat days, probably at Minster Abbey, to reflect on matters of faith. These would run on Saturdays and would run from about 10.00 to 4.00, with people bringing their own lunch. A suggestion is that we might consider the main themes of St Matthew’s Gospel, the Gospel we are reading at Mass this year. Another idea was to arrange occasional week-end (or mid-week?) walks. Or what about seeing if there would be any take-up of the idea of arranging visits to the theatre, cinema, etc for people who might not like just to go on their own? This latter idea is already happening on an informal basis. Finally we are hoping to arrange House Masses, concentrating for the time being on Lent – which begins on March 1st. Please let us know your views by letting any member of the Parish Pastoral Council know. Just to remind you of the names of the members of the Parish Pastoral Council: Gerry McWilliams (Chair); Chris Tedder, Audrey Connolly, Trish Lunn, Terri Hancock, Felicity O’Brien, Philip Eichorn, Dave Kendall, Julian Jennings, and the parish team:, Deacon Barry, Sr Corinne, Frs Mark and Patrick.
