THE ASCENSION: concludes Our Lord’s earthly ministry. The disciples do not want him to leave, which is quite understandable, but God’s plans are not our plans and something new is about to take place. This “new thing” is the coming of the Holy Spirit, and Jesus says that unless he leaves, the Spirit cannot come. The essential work of the Holy Spirit is to empower the Lord’s disciples to continue and develop the work the Lord Himself had started: this is the beginning of a new era, the era of The Church, the new People of God. The Feast of Pentecost is as important as the feasts of Christmas and Easter because it ensures that the massive change which was brought about by Our Lord’s Birth, Death and Resurrection, events which occurred at a particular time in a particular place, can now be experienced by all people at whatever time in whatever place. This massive change is the life of grace, the gift of God’s very own life poured out in his great love for the salvation of the world. So Pentecost, which we have not always celebrated as fittingly as we should have done, can be seen as the very point and climax of Our Lord’s mission to the world. I would never normally choose to be missing from the parish for such a great feast, but Pope Francis has called a great gathering of people to Rome to celebrate the 50 years since the beginnings of the charismatic renewal in the Catholic Church – the Renewal has introduced millions of Catholics to a new experience of the reality of
God’s love in the Holy Spirit and the grace to live out our response more faithfully in Church and world. I shall be with a group of laypeople from Southwark who will be in Rome from May 30 to June 5.
