There was a hauntingly melodic Zulu song and a tongue-twisting Russian one too. It was a most enjoyable and memorable evening, very well attended and it left the audience expressing the hope that they might come and give us another concert soon. The retiring collection, for Help Refugees, amounted to £350….that in itself is testimony to how much we valued the evening. Many many thanks to Andrew Larner and his singers!! Talking of music: at the 9.30 Mass this weekend you will hear music you may not have heard for a long time.. LET’S TALK: MONDAY 17 JULY, 7.00pm at the convent, 25 Western Esplanade. Topic: RELIGION AND POLITICS: Does Christianity have anything to tell us about the political issues of the day? Can the Gospel

inform our thinking about topics we hear of on the evening news: immigrants and refugees, social care, affordable housing, education, gender/sexual issues etc? How should the Church (including laity, religious and clergy) approach such topics? When, if ever, should the Church as a body take a position on a particular issue? And who, within the Church, decides what that position is? ST PHILIP HOWARD SCHOOL: many of you have commented on how sad it is to see the school buildings being taken down, a feeling all of us share deeply. It was not possible to save the crucifix moulded on to the outside wall of the chapel. However, the large statue of the Sacred Heart which stood in the school grounds, will soon find a new home in the garden of the Retreat. FUNERAL THIS WEEK: Wednesday 19th July at 11.30am – George Bernard Muriel EQUAL SHARES: Prize winners for July – 1st prize Bill Robb, 2nd Prize Maureen West. Congratulations! CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD: During the 9.30am Mass the children of the parish are invited to go through to the parish room and to listen to, and take part in, the Children’s Liturgy of the Word. The children make their sorry prayer, listen to the Gospel of the day in a child-friendly version, and then discuss their thoughts about Jesus’s teachings. The children are encouraged to say their own intercessory. And then, if time allows take part in an activity which is relevant to that Sunday’s teachings. They then return into Church at the Offertory to continue the Mass with their families. This is an important and vital part of helping our children understand, get to know and love Jesus and his teachings, on a level which they can understand. Currently we have only a very few volunteers from the parish who on a rota system, assist the children in learning about our faith. We are in desperate need of extra help! If this is something you would like to learn more about, and hopefully offer to be part of the Children’s Liturgy group, please contact the parish office on 01227 375095 or email Sue at sueourladyhb@yahoo.com You do not need to have a degree in theology or be a teacher, just bring the love of our faith and a willingness to help our children. You are welcome to come through and sit with those already part of the group to have ‘a look see’. We normally run through term time, however it is up for discussion as to whether we could continue through the holidays provided we have enough volunteers. CONGRATULATIONS: To Shelley Waldock and Christopher Harlow, married here last Saturday and to AmyRose Philpott and Gavin Mulheron married here this weekend.
