WHAT IS SUMMER? The Crimea as a tourist destination

FROM THE EDITOR Hello everyone “Miss Lingva” as a kind of scientific reporting on language and linguistics, increasing students’ motivation for learning foreign languages and my first international project experience. Well, what is a linguistic magazine? It is a magazine with articles on linguistics- and language-based theory, news, application, findings, and field reports. It is committed to diversity in its scope of reporting, covering both the scientific and applied sides of linguistics, while maintaining a neutral stance towards debates occurring within the field. I love learning languages and try to use all the facilities for this. Once I saw an online linguistic magazine on the internet. It was Babel. Babel is written and compiled by world-class linguists. . And I liked the idea to create me own magazine. And I decided to bring this project to my classmates and foreign students. Of course, the publication of a school magazine is a very difficult task. And here is what I and my team did. Special Thanks to my colleagues! You are the best!

WHAT IS SUMMER? By Tom Randel

Summer is a wonderful and special celebration for everybody. Summer is a wonderful season when we can finally go on vacation, camping or just enjoy being outside. Temperatures are rising quickly now and spring has gone by much faster than it should have! But with the change in season, we get a change in the produce that is available to us and an opportunity to use a whole new batch of fruits and veggies in our kitchens. Summer is a wonderful time for relaxing somewhere at the seaside or on an ocean beach. Children love having fun and playing on the sand and in the water. But the most fascinating thing about sea is the underwater world with all amazing sea creatures and seaweeds. Summer is the season in which there are no restrictions, so be brave and don’t hesitate to try something new. You can go to the sea, or if you don’t like the sea, you can go to the mountains, where it is cool and there is a wonderful view. Sometimes the weather becomes too hot in summer and the air gets stuffy. Then a thunderstorm usually brings relief. The sky is suddenly covered with dark clouds and distant rolls of thunder are heard. Later bright flashes of lightning are followed by claps of thunder and it begins to rain. After the thunderstorm the air is remarkably fresh, and very often we can see a beautiful bridge across the sky which is called a rainbow. Children love summer very much because in summer they have long holidays. They don’t have to go to school and that’s why they 4

missLINGVA / June, 2015

have much free time. They can play with their friends in the yard, read or watch TV. So, summer is the best time of the year. The sun stays out longer, usually sometime after eight in the evening. This means that there’s a lot more lay and get a suntan, so long as I don’t do it for too long, I don’t want to get burned. The sun is the reason why we go out and it just means we can be out longer during the summer. The last reason is that it’s the warmest time of year for us and we don’t get very much warm weather where we come from. For most of the year, it’s usually cool and wet or cold and icy. We only have three months of reprieve from the chill and wet and that is summer. When my neighbors and I want to celebrate the summer, we go out, have barbecues, or just sit and talk outside. This is a good thing to do at night, when the heat of the day lingers in the night air. So the warmth of the summer air is a rare treat for us and we relish It when it comes around each year. So summer is my favorite season of all because it’s the time of year that really puts together everything I like to do and experience. There’s no school in the summer so we can really have all the fun we want during the day. There’s more daylight during the day so there’s more day to enjoy. And the warmth of summer is something we only have a limited time to enjoy throughout the rest of the wetter, colder parts of the year for us. That’s why summer is my favorite season. Have a Wonderful Summer!

Sonnet 18: Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day? Poem by William Shakespeare Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate. Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date. Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines, And often is his gold complexion dimmed; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance, or nature’s changing course untrimmed. But thy eternal summer shall not fade Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st; Nor shall death brag thou wand’rest in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st, So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. So it is flying above me again now.

Summer is... By DARIA POLUKHANOVA Summer is not just one of the seasons. Summer means vacation. Sea, beach, tan, tasty and beautiful fruits, warm sun, warm nights, long days and three of the most warm months: June, July and August. In June, the nature puts forth it’s strength, blooming plants and fragrant trees, covered with thick green foliage, on fields of ripening rye. From that month is called Hleborost. In the hot and sultry days of July, often the storm replaces the sun for a short time and thereby we get refreshing rain. That month is called Straznik. In August the heat recedes and we welcome more pleasant warm days. This month is the most peaceful and gives us generous harvest. So we have named it Iniven. Why do we love summer? First, it’s a vacation. Vacation is the best period in the child’s life. We look forward to the summer during the rest of the 9 months so that we can take a break from books, homework and all the fuss. Filled with new strength to continue the work. Walk with beloved friends and just have a good time. Secondly, this delicious fruits and ice cream. Love them all. It’s such

a nice warm day to eat something refreshing. A perfect time to eat fruits and vegetables which are at their most delicious in the summer. And to set the mood perfect, we have ice cream! In General, these treats are not only tasty, but also useful. Thirdly, the weather is warm. Who doesn’t like warm days when you can swim? Love them all! During summer, it is warm even at night. And so, you can walk from morning till late night. But watch your head from the sun! It seems that the summer is so long that we can forget about school for a long period of time. But these three months without textbooks, 92 days of freedom, 2208 hours of happiness, 132480 minutes of bliss, 7948800 seconds of brightness will also fly and will not be visible during the academic year. And at the end of August we will again prepare for the school to take books from the library, buy numerous notebooks, pens and pencils. As of September 1 we go back to school to gain new knowledge and to remember the old, and wait again for this long-awaited and most exciting part/period in the life of every person.

Miss Office director,

Svetlana Bobrikova,

gave miss LINGVA an interview Svetlana, in your blog you write «To win is not enough to be beautiful, one must be an attractive person». So how to become an attractive person? But not enough to arouse interest , it is necessary to stimulate it. It means to perfect yourself. Svetlana, in your blog you write «To win is not enough to be beautiful, one must be an attractive person». So how to become an attractive person? To achieve much success - it is unimportant- in a beauty contest or in life, you must quicken people interest in yourself. It may be intelligence, talent, special abilities, appearance. But not enough to arouse interest , it is necessary to stimulate it. It means to perfect yourself. Well, how is the contest “Miss Office” held? The contest «Miss Office»is really a whole process. It begins in February. We announce the opening of the new season and a demands acceptance is started. Each month, from February to August we hold a casting among women who have sent their applications. We choose ten semifinalists. To reach the final is not enough to successfully pass the casting. The most difficult and interesting things begin later. Every woman should take part in a huge number of various charity events, sporting events, fashion shows and so on. The reports of these events we put on our website and on social networks. Anyone can track the activity of

the girls. The most exciting period begins in September - the online vote. Anyone can go to our website and vote for their favorite contestant. Out of 70 contestants in the final fall only 30. In October we announce the finalists and start preparing for the final show, which is traditionally held in December. What kind of the girls do you work with? Are there beauties with a non-standard size or a nonstandard height? The only limitation for participation in the our contest is the age (from 18 to 30). We do not declare standards for the size, because the status of the participants, their skills and talents, their intellectual level are much more important for us. So often in our competition you can see women of all sizes. It is hard for our director - he must track the process – the girls of different size mustn’t be nearby. It makes the contest very interesting. There are girls who are experienced models and have had work in the industry before. And there are girls who don’t have this experience. Who is more interesting and more difficult to work with: Of course, we like working with more experienced girls. They have more possibilities, they quickly assimilate information, remember and learn their numbers. So they can do something more complex, spectacular and interesting. That is why during our auditions, we pay great attention to issues relating to the creative biography of our potential participants.

What do you think about our creative director Burmistrova Yana. She became the Second Vice Miss of the contest in 2012. Yana is a very extraordinary girl. She is very thoughtful and emotional. She came up with the concept of her show, which does not always happen. Sue worked very hard and sharpened every movement, every gesture, every look. She rehearsed a lot. Yana thought over the costume for her and for the other participants of her show. She worked at laboriously. And viewers praised her performance. 12

Three years ago, the contest «Miss Office» became an all-Russian. «Miss Office» plans to hold a series of regional auditions in major cities of Russia this year. Why are you going to do this? Our contest is developing, looking for new forms. Ideally, we would like to hold regional competitions «Miss Office». The first step towards realization of this dream is the organization of retreats castings. Their goal is a promotion of our projects in the region, and to attract attention to our contest.

Say some words to our readers. ÂŤI wish for all readers of the magazine to live an active life, thirst for knowledge for selfimprovement. You can make your life happy and exciting. That goes without sayingÂť

OPINION AND COMMENTS

A WEDDING DAY IN RUSSIA Usually in Russia a wedding takes place at the weekend, on Saturday or/and Sunday. A bride and a groom spend the night before the wedding in different places and as a rule, these are their parents’ homes. The wedding day for the bride begins very early, sometimes at 6 or 7 a.m., to do her make-up, have her hair styled, to put on her wedding dress and be in time at the registration office. Traditionally the bride’s wedding dress is white or pastel colours, but she can choose whatever she likes for her dress, even black. The groom wears a formal suit or a dinner jacket with a tie or bow tie. He attaches a pretty flower to the lapel of his jacket. In the morning he comes to the bride’s house with his friends, at the same time other guests arrive, dressed in beautiful clothes with flowers for the bride. The best man and the bridesmaid are chosen from close friends and relatives, but legally their presence is not necessary. When the groom comes to the bride’s house he cannot come inside because at the entrance the bride’s friends, girls in general, wait for him. He is expected to participate in different funny competitions and quizzes and they also make him do a romantic declaration of love. He has to successfully answer all questions correctly and do all the girls’ tasks with help from his friends, boys in general. If he is unable to do something he gives gifts for the girls. It can be money, sweets, fruits, toys or a bottle of champagne. When he passes all tests they allow him to go inside to the bride’s home and to give her the wedding bouquet of flowers. The parents say parting wishes and bless their children. Then all people go to the registration office in cars that are decorated with flowers, balloons and ribbons. The wedding procession has stops at lovely places to take photos, to drink champagne and congratulate the newlyweds. The ceremony takes place at the registration office, where the wedding march from “Midsummer Night’s Dream” by Felix Mendelssohn plays. The guests witness the couple exchange rings as a sign of true love and then they are declared as Husband and Wife. In the final phase of the ceremony the new wife and husband light a candle, designating their family’s hearth, and dance a waltz. When the couple leave the registration office guests shower them with rose petals, small coins and grains, wishing them wealth. After that guests and the pair go to a restaurant for a reception. At the entrance of the restaurant the newlyweds’ parents meet them first with bread and salt. This is an old Russian tradition to meet 14 missLINGVA / June, 2015

very important guests or visitors with a round loaf of bread and salt. In a token of respect the couple nip off a piece of the bread, dip it in salt and then eat it. All guests do the same and go inside. One more popular wedding omen - broken dishes bring luck. So before coming in the restaurant the newlyweds drink champagne and crush their wineglasses on the porch or they break a beautiful plate instead. The toastmaster makes fun contests for guests, parents and the newlyweds as well as making jokes about the number of children the couple may have or who is the boss in the family. Also, in the wedding party singers and dancers act, and of course the guests sing songs and dance as well. During the party the guests congratulate the newlyweds, give flowers and money – the latter is the most popular gift, but they can present useful things too or make a surprise. If the guests shout together “Gor’ko!” (bitterly in English) it means, that the newly married couple ought to kiss each other as long as they can – this is a compulsory wedding tradition in Russia. The wedding does not have a special menu. The delicious meals are ordered in the restaurant in advance according to the preferences of the newlyweds. Normally there are many dishes with food and many alcoholic drinks at the wedding reception, but a wedding cake is essential. The couple cut it and make an auction for the first lovely piece of cake, earning money for their family’s budget. At night, at the end of the wedding party, people go outside to watch fireworks. Often the newlyweds hold a second wedding day, but it depends on families’ finances. This day is a tribute of respect for parents. The newly married couple gift their parents in a special order – from the father to mother and the bride bestows her new parents-in-law and the groom does vice versa. The second day reception is short, it begins in the morning and lasts until afternoon. If guests come late (that happens very often, because the second wedding day is actually the day after the wedding party), they have to take part in a fun concert, sing a song or read a poem. Pancakes and a traditional soup are always served on this day. The soup is often a fish soup with potatoes and onion – uha, also it can be a soup with beetroot and white cabbage - borsch or solyanka - a soup with different kinds of meat. There are no spoons on tables to eat the soup, guests have to buy them from the newlyweds, usually for coins or any jokes. On this day the newlyweds serve meals to show relatives and guests their domestic skills as well as taking part in games of swaddling a baby doll or

peeling potatoes and apples to show all people around that they are ready for family life. Sometimes the bride and the groom get married in a church, but in this case they must have the marriage certificate before, because the Russian church is not allowed to give it by law. The wedding in the church always takes place on Sunday and if everything goes by the rules this is a boring and long procedure limited by strict laws. For example, there is a dress code for women: the neck, arms and legs must be covered with clothing, do not wear trousers, a long skirt only, the head must be covered with shawl. The ceremony lasts for at least 1 hour in the church where there are no benches to sit on. People who are not baptised and people of the other faiths cannot go inside and have to wait on the street, that’s the way true believers prefer to. 2015, June / missLINGVA

The Crimean Peninsula

20

missLINGVA / May, 2015

The Crimean Peninsula is a major land mass on the northern coast of the Black Sea that is almost completely surrounded by water. The peninsula is located south of the Ukrainian region of Kherson and west of the Russian region of Kuban. It is surrounded by two seas: the Black Sea and the smaller Sea of Azov to the northeast. It is connected to Kherson by the Isthmus of Perekop and is separated from Kuban by the Strait of Kerch. The Arabat Spit is located to the northeast; a narrow strip of land that separates a system of la-

goons named Sivash from the Sea of Azov. Crimea—or the Tauric Peninsula, as it was formerly known—has historically been at the boundary between the classical world and the Pontic-Caspian steppe. Its southern fringe was colonised by the ancient Greeks, the ancient Persians, the ancient Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Genoese and the Ottoman Empire, while at the same time its interior was occupied by a changing cast of invading steppe nomads, such as the Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarma-

tians, Goths, Alans, Bulgars, Huns, Khazars, Kipchaks, and the Golden Horde. Crimea and adjacent territories were united in the Crimean Khanate during the 15th to 18th century before falling to the Russian Empire and being included into the Russian Taurida Governorate in 1802. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Crimea became a republic within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in the USSR. In World War Two it was downgraded to the Crimean Oblast, and in 1954, the Crimean Oblast was

transferred to the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. It became the Autonomous Republic of Crimea within newly independent Ukraine in 1991, with Sevastopol having its own administration, within Ukraine but outside of the Autonomous Republic. Sovereignty and control of the peninsula became the subject of an ongoing territorial dispute between Russia and Ukraine, with Russia signing a treaty of accession in March 2014 with the self-declared independent Republic of Crimea, absorbing it into the Russian Federation, though this is not recognised by Ukraine or most of the internation22

al community. In ancient times, it was the home of Cimmerians and Scythians, as well as the site of Greek colonies. The most important city was Chersonesos at the edge of today’s Sevastopol. Later occupiers included the Romans, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, Khazars, the state of Kievan Rus’, the Byzantine Empire, the Kipchaks, and the Golden Horde. In the 13th century CE, portions were controlled by the Republic of Venice and by the Republic of Genoa. In the 9th century CE, Byzantium established the Cherson theme to fend against incursions by the Rus’ Khaganate, and the Crimean peninsula from

this time was contested between Byzantium, Rus’ and Khazaria. The area remained the site of overlapping interests and contact between the early medieval Slavic, Turkic and Greek spheres, and became a center of slave trade, Slavs were sold to Byzantium and other places in Anatolia and the Middle-East during this period. In the 1230s, this status quo was swept away by the Mongol invasions, and Crimea was incorporated into the territory of the Golden Horde throughout the 14th century CE. Armenian monastery of the Holy Cross , established in 1358 The Crimean Khanate, a vassal

state of the Ottoman Empire, succeeded the Golden Horde and lasted from 1449 to 1779. In 1571, the Crimean Tatars attacked and sacked Moscow, burning everything but the Kremlin. Until the late 18th century, Crimean Tatars maintained a massive slave trade with the Ottoman Empire, exporting about 2 million slaves from Russia and Ukraine over the period 1500–1700. The terrain that lies beyond the sheltering Crimean Mountain range is of an altogether different character. Here, the narrow strip of coast and the slopes of the mountains are smothered with greenery. This “riviera” stretches along the southeast coast from capes Fiolente and Aya, in the south, to Feodosiya, and is studded with summer sea-bathing resorts such as Alupka, Yalta, Gurzuf, Alushta, Sudak, and Feodosiya. During the years of Soviet rule, the resorts and dachas of this coast served as the prime perquisites of the politically loyal. In addition, vineyards and fruit orchards are located in the re-

gion. Fishing, mining, and the production of essential oils are also important. Numerous Crimean Tatar villages, mosques, monasteries, and palaces of the Russian imperial family and nobles are found here, as well as picturesque ancient Greek and medieval castles. The Crimean Mountains and the southern coast are part of the Crimean Submediterranean forest complex ecoregion. The natural vegetation consists of scrublands, woodlands, and forests, with a climate and vegetation similar to the

Mediterranean Basin. The development of Crimea as a holiday destination began in the second half of the 19th century. The development of the transport networks brought masses of tourists from central parts of the Russian Empire. At the beginning of the 20th century, a major development of palaces, villas, and dachas began—most of which remain. These are some of the main attractions of Crimea as a tourist destination. Memorial Day in the United States

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season. It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half- mast from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is combined with Jefferson Davis’ Birthday in Mississippi.

24

missLINGVA / June, 2015

Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance. Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend. This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events. For the fashion conscious, it is seen as acceptable to wear white clothing, particularly shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. However, fewer and fewer people follow this rule and many wear white clothing throughout the year. Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to

include all men and women, who died in any war or military action. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day. The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that that, from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date.
