How to Learn a Foreign Language?

FROM THE EDITOR Hello everyone “Miss Lingva” as a kind of scientific reporting on language and linguistics, increasing students’ motivation for learning foreign languages and my first international project experience. Well, what is a linguistic magazine? It is a magazine with articles on linguistics- and language-based theory, news, application, findings, and field reports. It is committed to diversity in its scope of reporting, covering both the scientific and applied sides of linguistics, while maintaining a neutral stance towards debates occurring within the field. I love learning languages and try to use all the facilities for this. Once I saw an online linguistic magazine on the internet. It was Babel. Babel is written and compiled by world-class linguists. . And I liked the idea to create me own magazine. And I decided to bring this project to my classmates and foreign students. Of course, the publication of a school magazine is a very difficult task. And here is what I and my team did. Special Thanks to my colleagues! You are the best!

At age 13, I made my very own first piece of clothing, and from there on I don’t remember myself not having any ideas about design of clothing. Back then it was more like a hobby to me. I didn’t even think of being a professional designer. Clothing for me was a way to be brighter and more attractive. Buying something beautiful, without spending a fortune, was practically unreal, at that time, and pretty much impossible, and because of that I was constantly making up my own designs and creating

Do you remember the first piece of clothing that you made by yourself?

Yes, of course. It was a leather skirt and jacket, which was made out of my moms old coat. For sure, I hardly ever be able to forget these items. After all, those two pieces were my start. It wasn’t on my beginning as designer, that was exact time when I fell in love with leather and then I founded a brand, which specializes in creating exclusive clothing made out this material. 2015, April / missLINGVA

What do you think about Russian fashion in general and Russian designers?

The main problem of Russian designers is that among them there are practically no professionals. Singers, dancers, wives, daughters of the wealthy people, in general anyone in our country can become a designer, and clearly that is wrong. After all, creating clothing is not fun, it’s a serious job and profession, which should be approached responsibly. In order to get a little closer to a normal decent world level, we need an eternity. April Fools Day

April Fools’ Day or All Fools’ Day is a holiday celebrated in various countries on April 1. April fool’s day is a worldwide holiday of humor. Many historians believe that the establishment of January 1 as New Year’s Day in the 16th century was responsible for the creation of the April Fools’ Day, but this theory does not explain earlier references. The origins of April Fools’ Day are obscure. The most commonly cited theory holds that it dates from about 1582, the year France adopted the Gregorian Calendar, which shifted the observance of New Year’s Day from the end of March (around the time of the vernal equinox) to the first of January. Today, all over the world, on the first day in April, April Fool’s is a day where tricks are played on people in a spirit of fun. Anyone who plays a mean trick is just being mean. For the rest of us, April Fool’s Day is a challenging game of trickery!

missLINGVA / April, 2015

On this day people play practical jokes on each other and laugh. Everyone can play a joke on their relatives and friends. In England from midnight to 12 noon April 1, everyone could make fun of your friends, to deceive them. Those, who managed to deceive, shouted: “April fool!”. The biggest April’s joke happened in London in 1860. Several hundred English gentlemen with their ladies got invitations to « the annual ceremony of the washing of the white lions, which must be held in the tower at 11 o’clock on the morning of 1 April». In the USA before playing a trick people should say that it’s joke. Students say their classmates that tuitions cancelled. In Australia people begin April fool’s day by laughing. They go along the streets all day and laugh with each other for no

reason. People give funny gifts to each other and have fun all day. In Spain this holiday is celebrated on the 28th of December. There is a festival called “El Dia de los Santos Inocentes”. This festival is celebrated near the city hall. The Spaniards know that they shouldn’t believe shocking news on this day. Every year in Spain there is a street battle. Flour, eggs are used. In Scotland, April Fools’ Day is traditionally called Hunt-the-Gowk Day (“gowk” is Scots for a cuckoo or a foolish person). In the French speaking countries, April Fools Day is celebrated by attempting to put a fish made of paper on another persons back without getting caught. This is also slowly spreading to other places like Italy.

Make Your Face Funny!

“Make Your Face Funny For Money” is a RND campaign that helps to donate money with fun. For one pound you will get an opportunity to post your funny face selfie on the RND FB-page. A few ideas on how to make your face funny were from world-famous people. Elton John shaved off the beard of his friend, the owner of the London Evening Standard and The Independent, Evgeny Lebedev. change lives What can you do for Comic Relief? Not only are iconic figures in British entertainment involved in RND, but ordinary people who want to help too. Inspired by Mark Watson, the British invent their own challenges and marathons. “Last year I did a bike ride in my PJ’s and this year my sister would like to help raise money. Again in our pj’s and silly face paints. If you could help in anyway we would be most grateful”, write the young Ben and Ella from Nottingham on their RND fundraising page. We have £9000 already :’)” or Sam Lambert who posted a nice picture of baked bears with red noses, holding chocolate hearts, with the words “Red nose bake off bears all ready for our bake off at work tomorrow”. have their opposite views. Opponents suppose that the government, and supported by organisations such as the BBC and The Independent, manipulate people’s feelings, using photos and videos of hungry children who live on the streets, to earn more money. Reviewers are sure that their money will go to support corruption in Africa but not for good deeds, and methods of making money are immoral. Jamie Oliver was criticised for wasting the cake when some people are about starving. Opponents think that not only Africa needs help, but young people around the country have not a home, eat rubbish and nobody helps them enough. They ask the unanswered question “Why does nothing change for 25 years if at the moment RND gets over £700,000,000”? In English there is a saying “Charity begins at home”. In any case, if you ignore the sad thoughts and believe in the best then RND will bring a lot of positive things! By Natalia Lapteva

OPINION AND COMMENT

HAVE FUN DURING THE TRIP! by Lilit Bagdasarova

If anybody asks me what fills my life with sense, I always underline two things - braveness and trips. Though they seem different, for me the connection between them is evident: one will never be able to leave everything, change his culture, habits, traditions, accept other nation’s way of life without strong moral features. Of course, I’m speaking not about primitive touristic routes - that’s something deeper.

I’m 25 now, for all these years I managed to visit many interesting places and countries, in some of them I even lived. Sometimes it was not easy, but

The USA. This is my favourite place in the world. Having left there 4 months of life, I could never imagine how often Florida would come to my dreams. I’m grateful to my university more for giving me this time than for higher education=) When some students from different continents come to one place and live in one big house... Little party can kill anybody! For all these months we had been working, 20

sense of humour and funny people, whom I always meet, help me to keep in memory each moment, making it unforgettable. Here I will show you what a great role in our life play...funny moments. Especially during the trips!

Egypt. My first acquaintance with swimming, dancing, joking and doing many other things which I can’t mention here. I remember how we organized Hawaiian party and tried to compete with each other in crazy dance. But for what prize did we do all those things? In an hour everybody forgot about it.

this Arabic, but in fact African country, happened two years ago. I went there alone without having any idea, what it had prepared for me. The first day surprised me with those deep and clever eyes, unusual building, charming smile. It was a real fairy tale, and I fell in love with the prettiest camel I’ve ever seen. He rode me along the beach, protected me from wild men, even tried to kiss me. Once a man who was supposed to be my camel’s friend reached us and tried to steal me, I was shocked (as you can see now). The Camel from my fairy tale saved me, I will always be grateful for this braveness!

Germany. This European province has never been on top of my preferences, but study and then

work used to send me there not once. The only city I can’t call <province> there is Frankfurtam-Main, where most funny moments took place. Frankfurt is a capital of euro, that’s why one shouldn’t be surprised at the sight

of tramps sleeping in the centre of the city. This way they show social inequality - but it’s just one example. When I went there for the first time, I lived in Fronhausen (a village between Frankfurt and Marburg) with my group. There some of our lessons were devoted to a theatre, we even played on stage with the smartest producer Abdul. Once I had a role of cowboy and understood why I like country style in music so much=) You can see here some scenes from our lessons.

Turkey. Visiting Turkish resorts like Alanya and Antalya, it’s hard to realize

symbols of Istanbul! Switzerland. Almost Germany, but

what a great, but different city is inside this country. Istanbul stroke me with its beauty, size, contrasts, history, unique atmosphere. Connecting Europe and Asia, it gave you a real opportunity to see women in yashmak walking together with almost naked ones. And nobody looks at you with condemn. One day my friend brought me to the market and made me feed pigeons that lived near this place. I was surrounded by hundreds of them, everyone started to make pictures. So now those pigeons and me are in many touristic albums like

with the different name. Anyway you should come here for chocolate, cheese, watch and V.Lenin’s house (my main aim in Zurich). I went there for a weekend and haven’t got much time, but there were some interesting moments. My business partner was celebrating its anniversary and prepared a great show for all the guests where a new financial director was represented. During the whole program he was on stage, spoke to us, joked... In the evening I reached him, told him about our company in Russia, the way we develop, about my

personal life, he did the same. I was so glad that a new important member of our Swiss department is now my friend! But suddenly the director came to us and said that this man was just a showman.... I was disappointed, but thought, that friendship with such a funny man is better=)

appeared in Astrid Lindgren’s fairy tale in Stockholm and were given some kitchen-ware to use it in a proper way. What this proper way was, knew nobody of us, but the photos were funny. 5 years past, now we know, why people need all those things=) Russia. It’s better, but not necessary to go abroad for having funny moments. The Russian Federation is big and has many beautiful cities and republics.

girl may become a real princess and walk along the streets wearing such smart clothes, but she can not return home...=) Moscow can bring you much fun too. Everything is possible here! These are just some countries I visited, each of them give you unique emotions, unique people and unique moments! Some of them are funny, others - too funny=) Just be brave and don’t be afraid of changing your life,

missLINGVA / April, 2015

A lot of people ask me how my son gets on with such a hyper-active mom like me. Being the founder of my own Agency and PR-Director of four companies in Moscow, my day with one side always extremely loaded and at the same time unpredictable. Our usual weekday with my son consists of a visit to a private kindergarten, after we go to the fitness club and then go home to do chores and learn how to read and write. Several times a week on weekdays after Alex’s kindergarten may come with me to my business , where, frankly, his behavior is much better. He takes it for part of his life and thinks that helps me in my work. Coming to the event of the event he always wonders where the press-wall is to take photos with sponsors and only then goes to the table or to converse with my colleagues. He knows how and where he can and

can not be, because this is important to me and the son realizes this. For me he is a true support system. Very often I get new partners in the work, thanks Alex. His obedience and charm do the trick. Despite saturated weekdays, our weekend are more active! A 3-hour credit course on the weekends for 2 years is a sand painting on glass with a child psychologist. And then an interesting weekend programme: a cinema, museums, exhibitions, a swimming pool, walks in the Park, children’s workshops and more. Even a simple trip to a restaurant is accompanied by the availability of educational programs in it. The standard day in front of the TV in bed is not for our family. We have not got TV in principle . I’m sure many people will agree with me that excessive TV viewing leads to degradation and slows down a flight of fancy.

Usually we have got some days when we prefer to stay at home, and read a book... I was missing out on a few hours of this pastime, and the son begins to go crazy with boredom and ask “Mommy, you must create something, let’s go somewhere!” The interesting thing is that for several years now, Alex gets up in the morning with a question: “Mom, what’s the plan? Where are we going? ... And then?”. Moreover, he remembers everything I tell him and reminds me that I promised . There are no options when we can engage in “doing nothing”, and personally for me it’s not good! What can I say, every mother is given that the child she deserves. My son is my pride. How to Learn a Foreign Language? 4 Learning Techniques In the course of time a wide range of language learning techniques has been developed and the variety of those methods seems astounding. Due to technical progress, these days one can have a lesson whenever and wherever they feel like and choose any mode of study. However, before making the choice one may face a serious problem, i.e. what method can really meet one’s demands and satisfy one’s needs. Today it happens to be pretty hard to figure out whether all the new tricks will turn out of any use. We will analyze and compare the main methods of learning foreign languages to make your choice easier. 1. One-to-one classes VS group classes. The main issue of concern for those who want to study a foreign language is what form of classes to choose: private tuition or group lessons. There is no direct answer as to which of the two language learning

forms is more efficient and gives better results. A number of factors, i.e. time, schedule and budget, should be considered while making a choice. It still rests with an individual to decide what is suitable for him and what his real goals are. Private classes are good for those who: - are reserved and shy by nature and feel uncomfortable and insecure communicating with other people; - have specific needs and demands, limited amount of time and want to practice a certain aspect of the language (e.g. to pay more attention to grammar or certain vocabulary etc.); - want to prepare for tests, international exams, interviews; - want to get their teacher’s undivided attention and control. Although individual classes are suitable for students of any level, before taking one-to-one classes you

should carefully consider what goals you are eager to achieve and explain to your tutor what exactly you expect from your classes. However, not every person is carved out for having classes face to face with a teacher. Some need to share their views and exchange opinions with others during the lesson. Individual classes may seem boring for those who are looking for more counteraction and want to make new friends. Group lessons are better for those who are looking to improve and develop their communication skills, as group lessons presuppose having more oral practice in different forms, i.e. pair work, group work, discussion, scenario etc. Working in a group might also enable one to break the language barrier faster due to more cooperation between students. 2. English through movies Can one actually watch a movie and practice a foreign language at the same time? Is it possible to improve one’s level of a foreign language by only watching a movie? Not as easy as you think. Some learners have a general delusion that they can get better at listening or understanding native speakers just by turning on the subtitles. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way. The first thing you should be aware of is the more words you know the easier you understand the language. Second, if you actually want to study through films in the original you should treat this process as the actual language class not as entertainment.

Here are some tips on how to watch a film in the original and learn. - Take a film you have already seen, so you are familiar with the plot, as you don’t need to get distracted by it. - Break the film into short parts and take a break after each one in order to analyze it. - Watch a fragment of the film and put down all the words and expressions you don’t understand, turn on subtitles if necessary. Try to understand the context in which these words were used. - Try to discuss it with your friends in a foreign language 3. Learning through reading Reading is an important part of language learning. When combined with other forms of language practice it can help you achieve great results and remarkably enhance your vocabulary. In this respect, any kind of reading can be useful. You can find interesting words and expressions almost in every source. Here are some tips on learning through reading. • Don’t forget to make notes while reading, put down expressions that seem interesting or are not clear enough. • Remember that any reading can do you good, just squeeze the maximum out of it. • Read different types and genres of printed production to get familiar with different writing styles. • Don’t concentrate on classic literature only. You want to sound smart not obsolete.

• Resort to modern authors or entertainment magazines to pick up new hot and slang expressions. • Read more articles on different subjects for more sophisticated vocabulary. 4. Classes with native speakers. What can be better than having an opportunity to learn a foreign language with a native speaker? To tell the truth, classes with a native speaker can’t always be the key to success in mastering a foreign language. Everything depends on what one expects from these classes. Sometimes classes with a non-native teacher can be of better use. A teacher who speaks the same mother tongue with a student can be a perfect guide through all the traps in a foreign language that a native speaker might not be aware of. A non-native teacher is: - better for beginner students; - better at introducing grammar and vocabulary; - better at analyzing and correcting mistakes. A native teacher is: - better for those who already have good command of a foreign lan-

guage; - better for developing and improving spontaneous communication skills; - better for improving listening comprehension skills. Learning a foreign language should always rest on a wise combination of all types of practice. At Star Talk School we know how to make all these methods work successfully for our students. We are perfectly aware of the fact that being a one trick pony will never lead to any progress and development. We try to make our classes exciting and entertaining including all types of activities. It is very important to mix and match on your way to mastering a language. One should never be afraid to experiment with different forms of studying. Good luck learning foreign languages and stay tuned!

Journalist is my future profession In early March 2015 the correspondents of the magazine «Miss Lingva» were able to visit the workshop «Professionjournalist.» It was held in Moscow.Maria Polyakova and Anastasia Podzarey will tell you about their impressions. Maria Polyakova: I had no idea what awaits us. It intrigued me and affected the emotions and the impressions received during the workshop. Of course, the most important is to acquire invaluable experience, a lot of knowledge and unforgettable emotions. We had a very tight schedule, and there is no time to sleep. But, to be honest, it’s impossible to sleep there! You always want to create, write, invent something unusual! In my opinion, the most interesting and informative was a master class «How to ask questions to Putin.» I learned how to properly form the question of how to attract the attention of the president and a bunch of different, but very important details. Naturally, I can not say about the shooting of «Evening Urgant», it was incredible! But a lot of guys remember the Red Square, because it is one of the most famous landmarks of our country! They were so happy when they first saw the Kremlin! But if you think that we were just having fun, then you are sadly mistaken! All participants were subdivided into nine editions, including radio, newspapers and television. Each participant could chose a field in which he will be interesting. For 4 days, each edition had to create 2 products. We had to publish 2 news releases. As I and Nastya knew nothing about TV, it was a new experience for us! But despite this, we joined the team and created two amazing products quickly! Of course, I want to say that this is an amazing opportunity for those who hasn’t made their choice of a calling. These seminars provide a person to understand whether he is ready to work for years by profession, which he chose! I sincerely hope that such events will be held more often and in different cities of Russia. Anastasia Podzarey: I am lucky! It was a great possibility for me, because I am going to be a journalist. During these 5 days I got a big

experience and practice. And the main thing is I made many good friends. This event gathered children from different parts of the world. Many of the participants were in Moscow for the first time. Special tour around Moscow was organized for all the children. We were shown Red Square, the Kremlin, Aleksander’s garden. Moreover, we went to the Maly theatre for the play «Cherry garden»! It was an unforgettable experience. And at the end, Mary and I visited a TV show «Evening Urgant». I have never been in such magic atmosphere. The guest of the programme was the Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk. You can imagine, I was in the same hall with Ivan Urgant and Fedor Bondarchuk!!!I am very happy of it. But I am distracted. Mary and I got into «Profession Journalist» accidentally. But, as it turned out to be every child made big effort to get there. The best persons were invited. We had an opportunity to choose one of the edition and we went to TV News. You can ask why is TV? Because we have a big experience in printing Mass Media, so we want something new. And I wasn’t mistaken. All the children in our team were perfect professionals. Our curator Polina Danilova is very successful person and we really were lucky with her. She helped us a lot. So everything was started. We selected the main editor and all others posts. As an example, I was an advertising director. Especially for such directors was conducted master class, there we learnt all details and secrets of advertising. I liked my work very much, because I worked with other editions to advertise our TV channel. I also took part in the competition called «Ask Putin a question» and my question was the best, so I got a present from IGUMO university. Our team’s work was an issue of two products. It was really difficult, we didn’t sleep enough. But it wasn’t a problem for us, so we worked hard. Different interesting master classes were hold for us. And we met a lot of famous people. During these days we made friends from other mass medias. We became a real family. I felt an immense reluctance leave the seminar! I will never forget it! Thanks to all people, who took part in the seminar. You are the best!
