Valentine’s Day «The Moon and Sixpence» Books about love is a day of LOVE MADRID. MY BIG LOVE! Special day

Hello everyone “Miss Lingva” as a kind of scientific reporting on language and linguistics, increasing students’ motivation for learning foreign languages and my first international project experience. Well, what is a linguistic magazine? It is a magazine with articles on linguisticsand language-based theory, news, application, findings, and field reports. It is committed to diversity in its scope of reporting, covering both the scientific and applied sides of linguistics, while maintaining a neutral stance towards debates occurring within the field. I love learning languages and try to use all the facilities for this. Once I saw an online linguistic magazine on the internet. It was Babel. Babel is written and compiled by world-class linguists. . And I liked the idea to create me own magazine. And I decided to bring this project to my classmates and foreign students. Of course, the publication of a school magazine is a very difficult task. And here is what I and my team did. Special Thanks to my colleagues! You are the best!

A Valentine for nearest and dearest! by Polina Ryabova

H

i, my name is Polina Ryabova. I am 13 years old. I love my little brother and my wonderful family. I am fond of swimming, making toys and bracelets. I study at school number 1298 in Moscow. My teacher of English is Marina Anatolievna Nosal. Our English lessons are very interesting! What I like best of all in our English lessons is the merry, friendly atmosphere in the class. At the lessons we have a good oral practice . They say that the best way to one’s English is to speak aloud. We discuss different themes, ask questions on a given topic and answer them, make up stories and dialogues, do a lot of grammar exercises. I really like learning this wonderful language. That’s why I am very glad to write an article for this fabulous magazine! My favoutite holiday is St.Valentine’s Day. It’s a very beautiful holiday! St Valentine’s Day comes on February 14. It is not a legal or national holiday. It is a happy festival for young people. St Valentine is the patron of sweethearts. February 14 is the anniversary of his death. It is widely celebrated among people of all ages by exchange of “valentines”. A “valentine” may mean a special greeting-card or a little present. The day is the time to send little gifts to those you love. Flowers and candies are favourite presents which sweethearts send to each other. Valentine candies are packed in red heart-shaped boxes and sold for this one day. Valentines are special greeting cards.

hey are often coloured red, have red trimmings and pictures of hearts. Some “valentines” are very fancy, they are trimmed with paper lace and little bows of paper ribbon. They have verses of love poetry printed on them. I can made Valentines. And I can do them very well. It is a good day for parties. I like St Valentine’s parties. They are very special! St. Valentine’s Day came to Russia in early 1990’s and it’s a relatively new holiday. Although it is not observed as a public holiday it is widely celebrated and remains one of the most popular romantic holidays in Russia. At some schools children exchange valentines and hold special events, concerts and parties to celebrate the Valentine’s Day. It is a good day for parties. I like St Valentine’s parties. They are very special!A Valentine for My English Teacher and my aunt! My teacher’s very special so I’m making her a heart, a valentine that’s sure to be a proper work of art. I’ve worked on it all morning so it should be ready soon, I’d like to slip it on her desk before this afternoon. It’s colored in with crayons and it’s trimmed with paper lace, it has flowers, hearts, and cupids--I can’t wait to see her face.It is a very interesting holiday and many people like to celebrate it.

Madrid... by Lukina Maria For me Madrid is a special city. It is filled with history, cozy places, beautiful sights… Madrid is my big love! Because…

club. The t-shirt costs nearly 100 euro. I have found remarkable fact: opposite the stadium there is a small park, where you can see huge flowerbeds with national trees of different countries. Russian national tree is, of course, the birch. In stadium there is a cozy Real Café, where you can see any matches of team or carry out romantic appointment.

I like Football For many people football is more than life… Somebody plays football and somebody is a football fan… There is a legendary football team Real in a wonderful city Madrid. This team – royal club – was founded in 1902. And in 1988 it got the title “The best club in football history”. This club has its own house – Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. It was opened upon the name of Chamartin in 1947, but in 1955 was renamed in honour of president of this club. Today this great stadium contains nearly 80 000 fans. There is an official shop of Real there. You can buy t-shirts or balls with the symbol and surnames of the 8

I like Food Taking meals is a particular ritual in Madrid and in all other parts of Spain. You must not be in a hurry, eat and drink very quickly. You’ll enjoy food! People have supper very late, at 9.30 p.m. They have breakfast twice. In every bar, café, restaurant you can get tapas (snacks), usually they can be olives, chips or slices of bread with fish, ham or vegetables. The traditional dish is ‘Paella’: fried rice with vegetables or sea products

or chicken. The national traditional dishes are: jamon with melon and octopus (in Spanish ‘pulpo’). The most popular desert is ‘Churros’ with hot chocolate. The Spanish like to use it for the first breakfast. It is very tasty and it has many calories. The most famous Spanish drink is ‘Sangria’. It can be red or white wine. The red wine is made from wine, ice and oranges. The white wine is made from wine, ice, oranges and apples. Its – special feature – it has gas. You can taste it in different places because it is sold everywhere. In Spain I can eat much delicious food.

I like bears The main sight of Madrid is the sculpture El Oso y el Madrono . This Bear costs in the center of La Puerta del Sol. People often make appointment about the Bear and go for a walk on small city streets. El Oso y el Madrono is symbol of Madrid and all Spain.

My big love!

I like walks Madrid is a small city, though it is the capital. It has many silent deserted streets where it is possible to walk and breathe present Spanish air. During such walks you can open for yourself picturesque places, for example, ‘Mercado de San Miguel’. It is the real Spanish market! You will be able to find the freshest fruits, the tastiest cheese, the most unusual seafood there and it is a lot of other delicacies. Feature of this place: everything is prepared special for you. For me in Madrid there is one quiet and cozy place is the Botanical garden. It is possible to sit, reflect, draw, watch fine flowers for hours. Especially I was inspired by different types of irises. Madrid is my city! And my big love! P.S. Thank you, Yulia and Alex for solar atmosphere of Madrid walks… missLINGVA/ February, 2015

H

ello, my name is Maria and I am ten years old. I would like to tell you how English became a second native language for me. I was born in Moscow, Russia. I went to kindergarten and lived there until I turned six. After finishing kindergarten and before summer vacation, I was accepted into first grade in very strong school in Russia. But my life was about to change pretty soon. My family had decided to move to the United States of America. We relocated to Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of the City of New York. I wasn’t really scared to move, because I already have been there multiple times when I was little. I only had one disadvantage when we moved, I had no knowledge of English whatsoever. All I knew was “hi” and “bye.” With the new school year quickly approaching, my mom, my aunt, and I went to the principal of the nearest public school to talk about me going to their school in September. The principal was trying to convince my mom that it would be best for me to go to kindergarten because of my English. However, at my age I should be in first grade, and I really wanted to go to first grade because in Russia I already got into first grade. After that the principal said I could go to first grade for two weeks and if it would be really hard for me she will transfer me into kindergarten. Also, like all bilingual kids, I got into a special program that was called ESL (English as a Second Language). We also found out my teacher’s name: It was Ms. Felicia. Soon, the first day of school came. I was really scared that I would get lost and I didn’t understand where we were going. My first day in school was really hard. Next day, the yellow school bus would drive me to school and back home everyday. It was scary at first, but after getting over my fear, I finally enjoyed the ride home and to school. At first, I was crying every day after I came home from school. Me and my mom would do my homework together. To help me improve my English I read books. A lot of books. It really, really, really helped to quickly develop my vocabulary and my speaking skills.

he days flew by, and school got more interesting and fun for me, since now I began to understand English. I started to talk a little bit and I made some friends. Later, when I got to know my friends, I found out that many friends of mine were also Russian speaking. Sometimes we talked in Russian! After about three months, I learned to talk fully in English and I made more friends. After 5 months in school, I was able to pass the test for gifted and talented children and was accepted to a special program that gives an opportunity to advanced students to learn more. I had to switch to another school for second grade. My second school name was the John C. Drumgoole School or public school 36. It was hard again for me, because I didn’t have any friends. But after a while, I made friends and I loved that school. My teachers didn’t even know that English was not my native language. They were really surprised when my mom told them. I stayed in that school for three more years and finished my fourth grade. In my school we even had a dance company that I was in. Life was really interesting in America! I went to ballet, basketball, and karate. It was a lot of fun! We lived there for four years and now we are back in Moscow, Russia. I am in 4th grade here (which is considered 5th grade in New York). I’ve noticed that life in Russia is really different from life in America. While we were in America, I didn’t really focus on Russian, what’s why I almost had to start over now. It’s now my first year in a Russian school and I am still adjusting to it. English is still my favorite language because I can read books and watch movies in their original version. I really enjoy to read books in the original, watch american movies and shows, and watch utube channel with various craft tutorials in English. By the way, next time, I want to tell you how crafty americans are. All ages and both genders are really interested in this. And so am I.

Love is being stupid together By Lisitsyn Sergei

St. Valentine’s Day is a special holiday. Now phrase “seems to be there, but seems to be no” is very popular in the Internet. I think that it is fully appropriate to describe the position of this holiday in modern Russian reali-

very year our school held the socalled “methodological Week” organized by Burmistrova Elena Valerievna - 5 days, which are usually entirely devoted to the humanities: Russian, literature, English, Spanish, History, Social Studies, technology and physical education. This week is usually very full: seminars, competitions, quizzes, etc. This week usually takes place in February. That’s why we cannot circumvent this holiday party. The concert, which is dedicated to closing the methodical week, always in some way associated with the organizers of the day of lovers. I, as an author, was personally involved in the organization of these two concerts. Our first experience in organizing such events was in 2013 . Together with high Every year our school held school students we realized a great idea, “The Adventures the so-called “methodological of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Week” organized by Burmistro- Watson in school number 2”. va Elena Valerievna The plot of the story : very important documents have disappeared, methodical week under the threat of failure. The staff couldn`t deal with the situation, t i e s. forcing them to turn to the greatest detective of all time. nd that’s the main event - a concert dedicated to the closing of the methodical week. The concert started with a brief overview of what happened during the week. Next, the audience saw several tens of congratulations, both current students and has long since been released from our school; as teachers are still working and have not taught in the home school. But, of course, no one has forgotten the affair, which spun high school students a week ago. And now, according to the scenario, high school students have tried to teach one of the creators of intrigue, the main character, a declaration of love. Each class imagined this process in their own way: merry song, combined with dance (6 B), reading Shakespeare in different languages (10 A), sad, and then were forced to dance song in Spanish (11 A), a fascinating dance to slow composition (9 a), sneaks to shiver song from the film “irony of Love” (9 B), a song with a bright name “Stay” (9 a). Diverse? Of course, yes. Certainly, there was plenty to choose from. The concert ended a sentimental scene in love, which left no one indifferent. But, in my opinion, these two steps very good show how in our school like this holiday. We do not pass by it. I think we would still have organized a holiday in honor of the day, even if he did not get to close methodical week. In conclusion, with your permission, the author of these lines will remind children: close to you are the most beautiful creatures on the Earth. Do not forget to love those with whom you are learning, with whom go for a walk. Those who are close to you. Love one another. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love is passion

melody, love is more like flame… it always happens came. However, time is a speedy runner but feelings can rest the same.

E

ach year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, sweets, gifts or flowers with their close and special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia. “St.Valentine was a Roman Priest at a time when there was an emperor called Claudias who persecuted the church at that particular time,” Emperor He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died. The idea of encouraging them to marry within the Christian church was what Valentine was about. And he secretly married them because of the edict. Valentine was eventually caught, imprisoned and tortured for performing marriage ceremonies against command of Emperor Claudius the second. There are legends surrounding Valentine’s actions while in prison. One of the men who was to judge him in line with the Roman law at the time was a man called Asterius, whose daughter was blind. He was supposed to have prayed with and healed the young girl with such

astonishing effect that Asterius himself became Christian as a result. In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation all because of his stand for Christian marriage. The story says that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius’ daughter. He inspired today’s romantic missives by signing it, “from your Valentine.”(abridged from St. Valentine, The Real Story by David Kithcart , http:// www.cbn.com)

VALENTINE HAS COME TO BE KNOWN AS THE PATRON SAINT OF LOVERS.

The first mention of St.Valentine’s Day as a romantic holiday appered in the writings of Jeffry Chaucer in 1382.Over the centuries, the holiday evolved, and by the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging hand-made cards on Valentine’s Day had become a tradition in England. After some period of time hand-made valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts eventually spread to the American colonies.

St.Valentine was a true and outstanding personality for his time, and according to Father Frank O’Gara (Whitefriars Street Church) Whitefriars Street Church in Dublin, Ireland is one of three churches that claim to house the remains of Valentine. Today, many people make the pilgrimage to the church to honour the courage and memory of this Christian saint. The main issue of the day :what kind of present will you give to your sweetheart? There are so many options to choose… A classic variant that can come to one’s mind and we say your love with flowers. By the way,do you know where does this phrase came from?I am totally sure, you don’t. Say It With Flowers is a 1934 British musical film directed by John Baxter and starring Mary Clare, Ben Field and George Carney. In London a group of shopkeepers hold a benefit concert in a local pub to raise money for Kate Bishop( a flower seller who many of the leading music hall stars buy their flowers from). When Kate falls ill and visits the doctor she is prescribed a stay at the seaside to restore her health. It is notable for the performances of several real music hall stars such as Florrie Forde, Charles Coborn and Marie Kendall.

THE TITANIC.

HOW IT WAS.

IMMERSION IN THE STORY

R

ecently I have visited the fantastic exhibition “Titanic: how it was. Steeped in history “, held in Moscow. The first association that occurs at the mention of the ship is a beautiful but tragic love story. On board at the time of the crash were 2,208 passengers and of course there were love stories, and examples of honor and dignity. Many of these stories have been reflected in the film. For example, a 28-year-old actress Dorothy Gibson, who became the prototype of Rose was on the board of Titanic. 20 missLINGVA/October, 2014

S

by Chernoklinova Olga

he later starred in the movie “Rescue from Titanic “, which was released a month after the disaster. She starred in a suit, which she was wearing on the night of this accident. The story of the elderly couple was absolutely true either. On the Titanic also were “Favorites of Destiny” Violet Jessop was on the boards of all ships of Olympic Class and it has something happened always. She was on board the Olympic, when he collided with a cruiser, she escaped from the sinking Titanic and the sinking Britannica, when she hit a mine during the First World War.

“Unsinkable” Molly Brown. Margaret seated people in the lifeboats. She refused to sit there herself, persisting to be the last. She made lists of survivors, collected money for those who have lost everything along with the Titanic. But the exhibition is devoted to the history of the “unsinkable” ship as it was called. The Exhibition hall is represented with a large variety of rooms. There are presented passenger cabins of various classes, a workshop with boilers which workers extended the life of the ship for half an hour, promenade deck, where you can feel the breeze. It, with her starry sky, has become one of my favorites.

As well as “room” of the sea bottom, where I really felt like at great depth. There you can see the video frames made by Cameron during his expedition - a dive to the Titanic. And of course – 342 authentic objects! I always wondered how, even at night, you cannot see the iceberg. And at the exhibition I finally got the answer for my question. It turns out that the crew of the Titanic was “lucky” to meet with a unique natural phenomenon - a black iceberg, to notice which at night is almost impossible.

O

I

f people would have believed that Titanic sinking, in the first lifeboat would not have been 19 people, although it is designed for 65. One of the last rooms is dedicated to the film. There you can see original costumes of the heroes? The famous sketch and even «the heart of the ocean». The attention to the details, which the exhibition organizers pay, is really impressing. Even the entrance ticket to the exhibition is fully consistent with the atmosphere that prevails there. It is a boarding ticket for the Titanic, with indication of the class, your age, historical passenger and factual information about person.

T

alks about the exhibition can be infinitely long, well, as it is said - it is better to see once than hear a hundred times. So go ahead! The exhibition will stay in Moscow until 15 February 2015.

ne of the goals of the crew was to break the record and arrive in New - York nd in one of the last exhiin not 6 but after 5 days of travbition halls you can find elling. When the ship received a out if your passenger surwarning about the danger of col- vived or fortune turned against lision with an iceberg, the captain him. I was lucky - I survived! saw no need to slow down, and only slightly changed course. In fact, all of this can be considered titanic-exhibition.ru as a series of coincidence. If radio operators are not broke off an alarm, if the captain slowed the ship - disaster would have been possible to avoid.

Legends of St Valentine’s Day Series of articles by Andrea Row. Phoenix, Arizona ,the USA

Historical archives make mention of at least three different individuals (and perhaps as many as seven) credited with the name of Saint Valentine (or Valentinus). The three discussed here were all martyred for their faith and have been recognized by the Catholic Church. The first is described as a priest who resided in Rome and the second is described as a Bishop who resided in Interamna (known today as Terni) in Italy. These two Saint Valentines appear to have been alive during the second half of the Third Century and are said by some sources to be buried on the Flaminia Consular Way...but at different distances from the City of Rome. The ancient Flaminian Gate is now called the Porta del Popolo, but was formerly referred to as the Gate of Saint Valentine. The name seems to have originated from a small church dedicated in the name of the saint which was in the immediate vicinity. Official reports regarding the interrogation of both the aforementioned saints are preserved, but are of a relatively late date and deemed to have little, if any, historical value. Some authorities on the subject believe that the two Saint Valentines mentioned above are likely one and the same individual...a Roman priest who became Bishop in Interamna and was then sentenced there before being returned to Rome for execution. Since both lived

22 missLINGVA/ February, 2015

during the reign of the same Roman emperor and are believed to have died on the same day, this assumption probably has some validity. The third Saint Valentine is said to have practiced in Africa with a number of associates prior to his martrydom, but nothing further is known of this particular personage and it is doubtful that he is associated in any manner with the modern day celebration of Saint Valentine’s Day. In 496 A.D., Pope Gelasius declared February 14 to be the Feast Day of Saint Valentine...Patron Saint of Lovers and Engaged Couples, with particular jurisdiction over the quarrels which arise between sweethearts. The patronage of Saint Valentine also extends to epilepsy (from which he is believed to have suffered), bee-keepers, plague, greetings, travellers and young people. His representations include: birds, roses, a bishop with a crippled or epileptic child at his feet; a bishop with a rooster nearby; a bishop refusing to adore an idol; a bishop being beheaded; a priest bearing a sword; a priest holding a sun; and a priest bestowing sight upon a blind girl. Throughout the world, there are several special resorts that exhibit a romantic year-round theme (but particularly on February 14 with elaborate celebrations) and which are named in honor of Saint Valentine...Saint-Valentin in France (also known as “le

village pour les Amoureux”), Saint-Valentin in Austria, SaintValentin in Quebec, Canada (founded in 1835 and granted the unique distinction of being the only location in the world with permission to use a heart-shaped date stamp on outgoing mail) and Sakuto Cho in Japan, for example. Saint Valentine: Holy Priest of Rome: The date of this Saint Valentine’s birth is not known. Along with Saint Marius and his family, Saint Valentine assisted the martyrs during the persecution they suffered under the rule of Claudius II (also known as Claudius the Goth and Claudius the Cruel). In addition, since Rome was at the time involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns, the emperor found it difficult to recruit the male populace into joining his military leagues. Believing this to be because Roman men were adverse to leaving their loved ones or their familes, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements within the City of Rome. Saint Valentine and Saint Marius, however, continued to perform wedding ceremonies in secret. When is was discovered that Saint Valentine was defying the emperor’s decree, he was apprehended and dispatched by Claudius to the Prefect of Rome who, being unable to force the saint to renounce Christianity, ordered that Valentine be clubbed, stoned and then beheaded.

According to tradition, while Valentine waited in prison for his execution, he corresponded with those under his care by sending letters and love notes to his parishioners. It is also believed that while incarcerated, the Bishop fell in love with a young woman who visited him during his confinement. According to some sources, this was the blind daughter (whose name may have been Julia) of of Asterius, the jailer. It is said tht God enabled Valentine to miraculously restore the girl’s sight. Popular belief indicates that Valentine’s farewell message to his love contained a closing that has now transcended time: “From Your Valentine.” The saint was executed on February 14 in either 269 A.D. or 270 A.D. In 270 A.D., Pope Julius I is said to have built a church near Ponte Mole in the saint’s memory at a location once known as Porta Valentini and now called Porta del Popolo. The relic bones of this Saint Valentine, who may also have been a physician, are now housed within the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome. Saint Valentine: Bishop of Interamna: This Saint Valentine is said to have been scourged, imprisoned and beheaded by Placidus, Prefect of Interanma. The relic bones of this Saint Valentine are housed in a basilica in Terni, a town in Italy which hails Saint Valentine as its Patron Saint. It is believed that the saint, who lived in the Third Century, dedicated his life to the Christian community of Terni, becoming the first Bishop of the town. Adored by the populace, the fame of Saint Valentine’s holiness and miracles reached Rome, his name being linked with love because, according to legend, he was the first religious personage to oversee the celebration of marriage between a pagan man and a Christian woman. Sentenced to death in Rome, he was martyred on February 14 along the Via Flaminia and swiftly buried in order to prevent rioting by the Christians. It is said that three of Saint Valentine’s disciples managed to find the body, transferring it to Terni, where the remains were interred within a sacred place. The Basilica of Saint Valentino was later erected in the same location to honor the saint and invoke his protection and blessing. Every year on February 14, the town of Terni now hosts exhibitions, fairs and cultural events which attract many tourists to the area.

Favourite books about love by Chernoklinova Olga

T

he Moon and Sixpence is a novel by W. Somerset Maugham, told in episodic form by the first-person narrator as a series of glimpses into the mind and soul of the central character, Charles Strickland, a middle-aged English stockbroker who abandons his wife and children abruptly to pursue his desire to become an artist. The story is said to be loosely based on the life of the painter Paul Gauguin. The novel is written largely from the point of view of the narrator, who is first introduced to the character of Strickland through his (Strickland’s) wife and strikes him (the narrator) as unremarkable. Strickland is a well-off, middle-class stockbroker in London sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century. Early in the novel, he leaves his wife and children and goes to Paris In Paris he was generously supported while in Paris by a commercially successful but hackneyed Dutch painter, Dirk Stroeve, a friend of the narrator’s, Strickland’s genius. After helping Strickland recover from a life-threatening condition, Stroeve is repaid by having his wife, Blanche, abandon him for Strickland. After the Paris episode, the story continues in Tahiti. Strickland has already died, and the narrator attempts to piece together his life there from the recollections of others. Strickland left behind numerous paintings, but his magnum opus, which he painted on the walls of his hut before losing his sight to leprosy, was burnt down after his death by his wife by his dying order. Reading the text we find out the main problem lying in the power of wife on her husband and complete obedience and silence of Captain Nichols. While reading on we realize he reconciled this fact and continues such an existence. Let’s turn to the general definition of the text under the study. First of all we should say it is told in the first person narrative and we constantly feel and see the presence of the author: “I am certain that…”, “I never heard her speak…” etc.It is enough to have a look at the first sentence of the text. There we obtain the most significant characteristic of Captain Nichols. It is conveyed through a wonderful case of oxymoron, which is a feature of Maugham’s style: “married bachelor”. Indeed, it gives us the key image of the hero. The rest of his traits of character such as fear of wife, submission, inactivity are just included in his portrayal. What concerns his wife, while describing her the author twice used intensifiers, which demonstrate she wasn’t a usual “bird”: “She gave me an impression of extraordinary tightness”, Besides, a very specific and even philosophic metaphor applied by the author also illustrates her world: “inexorable as fate and remorseless as conscience”. To crown it all, she didn’t show her higher position to people, she tried not to address to him directly, but for example send a daughter, and all that proves she was a rational and reserved person.

peaking about the extract, we can add that the prevailing mood of it is rather pessimistic. The majority of the sentences is quite long, as they bare some description to the reader. We can outline the inner conflict of man in the extract. Surely Captain Nichols realizes his position in the family, but he undertakes no steps to make himself free, and this is his greatest problem. Thus, the extract provokes contradictory assessments, as we see Captain is able to change his life but has no wish to do that. When I was reading the book I found some words which can be famous quotes. I think here they are “When a woman loves you she’s not satisfied until she possesses your soul. Because she’s weak, she has a rage for domination, and nothing less will satisfy her.” “It is one of the defects of my character that I cannot altogether dislike anyone who makes me laugh.” “Women are constantly trying to commit suicide for love, but generally they take care not to succeed.” “A woman can forgive a man for the harm he does her...but she can never forgive him for the sacrifices he makes on her account.” “The writer is more concerned to know than to judge. The story is written with a touch of tragedy. The author employs a number of stylistic devices that produce tremendous effect. The author enhances the desired effect with the help of suffering and despair. The epithets daze the emotional force they carry. The powerful effect produced by these expressive means is unquestionable. Due to the vivid stylistic colouring we understand the tragic role of characters. W. Somerset Maugham draws the reader’s attention to humaneness and compassion. The author lends some stylistic colouring to the description of the man’s portrait. The metaphors strike the reader with its vividness and makes him feel. The similes the author resorts to make the description far too picturesque and very illustrative The syntax of the dialogue is very simple; plenty of expressions make the speech expressive and emotionally coloured. In the case of climax the sentences are so arranged that each of the consecutive sentences is more important, more significant and more emotionally coloured than the preceding one, all of them forming a chain of interdependent elements. Amazing book! I was constantly changing my opinion of the character Charles Strickland. I hated him and then I loved him. His total indifference to societal views was contemporaneously inspirational and tragic. All assignments present good English language practice for me. I liked this book.

W Eternal love

L

ove is the most beautiful feeling in the world, attachment to man, sympathy. Love is the harmony of two souls singing together. Love is caring, tenderness, honesty. Love inspires man and he flies away in the seventh heaven from happiness. Love is different. But the most beautiful love is eternal love.

Happy St. Valentine’s day! Our team wishes you tons of joy, happiness and delight!

Take this valentine as a sign of our attention and sympathy. The hearts of the poets have never been immune to the romanticism, love and passion - the key themes of Valentine’s Day. Love, the favorite theme with the poets has stirred their feelings and imagination since time immemorial. No words are better than those that burst forth from the heart of a true love! Love Is Enough Love is enough: though the world be a-waning, And the woods have no voice but the voice of complaining, Though the skies be too dark for dim eyes to discover The gold-cups and daisies fair blooming thereunder, Though the hills be held shadows, and the sea a dark wonder, And this day draw a veil over all deeds passed over, Yet their hands shall not tremble, their feet shall not falter: The void shall not weary, the fear shall not alter These lips and these eyes of the loved and the lover.
