Intro This book contains work from designers and illustrators that I find have fully executed one of the areas of design that I feature to a point of high impact imagery. These images featured showcase every aspect of design I thrive for within my own practice and I aim to become an expert in all of them in order to better myself as an established illustrator. It’s a chance to show work from some of my favourite designers and illustrators that have inspired me throughout my own journey as an illustrator. These images tell a story, cause a reaction, make you laugh and entertains you. I don’t need to fill pages with quotes about design that have philosophical meaning that you can’t understand half the time, I just let the work speak for itself. That’s what I do.
Go get inspired. 4

Where do you find your inspiration from when designing? I look at a lot of graphic design and Illustration blogs and I put my favourites onto ‘We Am Likes’ (an inspiration blog I share with a few friends). This helps because I can find inspiration close to hand and I don’t have to spend ages looking for it when I’m busy. When I’m working on a piece, I tend to use google images a lot for inspiration and reference. I would like to get better resource for everything but often there just isn’t the time! I love to go to museums on a weekend, and like to sit and sketch. Some of my animal pieces were based off sketches I made in the Manchester Museum. I also make sure that I’m still going to lectures when I can. The Blab talks are really inspiring.

Who did you find inspiring when you started out and now? During university I looked at a lot of people, It wasn’t until I got to third year that I was starting to refine who I looked at. I was, and still am, massive fans of Charley Harper, Otl Aicher, Noma Bar, and Jason Munn. I was also and still am really interested in Graphic Design just as much as Illustration. My inspirations have grown since then, but have become more refined. I think the key is, being able to identify and pick up on exactly what It is that you like about it. 59

Did it take you long to finally find a style and approach to design that you felt comfortable with and what you’re known for? Before I graduated, I was only just beginning to find a style I was comfortable with. I still like that work, so It’s in my portfolio but after I graduated I enjoyed being able to experiment with the visual style of my work. I think that It wasn’t till after graduating that I really did my best work. I’m still refining it now.

I’m assuming you went to uni, how did you promote yourself as an illustrator after you graduated? I went to Stockport college of Art and Design. After I graduated I sent my portfolio out to Art Directors of Magazines and Newspapers, as well as Graphic Design studios and Illustration agencies. Lack of confidence meant I really didn’t do this enough though, and it took me a while to get off my feet.
