Starting the 9th February the Officers’ Club facility will begin a much needed $1.2 million renovation. While the Officers’ Club facility will be unavailable for five to six months during the renovation period, Team Osan’s Mustang Members will continue to enjoy the vast majority of their usual membership programming and benefits, albeit in alternative locations such as the Enlisted Club, Checkertails, the Mustang Café and the Black Cat Lougee. Child & Youth Programs are here to provide safe, caring and enriching environments for our children and youth. To keep the Osan Community up-to-date on CYP items, here is information regarding Family Child Care. Family housing towers here at Osan do not allow for the Child & Youth Programs to operate a Family Child Care (FCC) program. This is due to a safety issue. In the event of a fire, the elevators cannot be used and it would be dangerous for one adult to evacuate up to six children typically under 5 years old. AFI 34-276, Family Child Care Programs, 1 NOV 1999, states, ‘Any individuals caring for other families’ children a total of more than 10 hours a week on a regular basis must be licensed to provide care in onbase quarters.’ However individuals MAY provide baby-sitting on an occasional basis for other families or friends, teenagers may baby-sit for families during evening/weekends or child care may be provided in the parents’ own home. Temporary full-time care of a child during a parent’s absence for temporary duty or deployment by the person listed on the AF Form 357, Family Care Plan would be allowed. Violation of this regulation may revoke the housing privileges of individuals who provide child care.

Jonathan Emilio Chappell-Teen of the Month Jonathan Emilio Chappell is our February Teen of the Month. Jonathan is 13 years old. He has been living in Korea for 5 months and his favorite dish is Bul-gogi Burger here in Korea. Jonathan’s hobby is playing football. He loves roller coaster rides because he loves the feeling of falling down. He loves coming to the Youth Center to play billiards and basketball with his friends. During the weekends Jonathan goes to the dog shelter to walk the dogs with his family. Jonathan wants to help people when he grows up, so he wants to get in to med school and become a surgeon for his future career. “Thanks for helping those dogs and can’t wait to see you saving those people!!”

Ondal Cave Saturday, 13 February

Mt. Odae National Park 14-15 February Odaesan National Park was designated as a national park in 1975. Its name was derived from the the following 5 plateaus: Manwoldae, Jangryeondae, Girindae, Sangsamdae and Jigongdae. Featuring the 1,563m high Birobong Peak, Odaesan spreads southwest with Mt. Sodaesan, Horyeongbong Peak and Mt. Sogyebangsan. The east side is connected with Sangwangbong Peak and Durobong Peak, which are over 1,000m high.

Ondal Cave is located underground at the foot of Seongsan Mountain, where Ondalsanseong Fortress is situated. It is a natural limestone cave that is estimated to have begun forming around 450 million years ago. The total 760 meter-long cave covers an area of 349,485 square meters. The cave mouth is two meters high, while the cave itself is 5 to 10 meters high and about 5 meters wide. The cave features stairway structure and contains an abundance of beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. The average temperature of the cave maintains 14 degrees Celsius in summer and 16 degrees Celsius in winter, making it a perfect all-year-round attraction. The cave is rich in underground water resources and there is a 0.8 to 1 meter-deep cave river flowing at the bottom of the cave floor. The cave also has over 40 small ponds that are inhabited by a variety of living organisms like fish and insects. Situated on top of the mountain peak to the left of the cave is Ondalsanseong Fortress. The fortress has been preserved in its original form throughout some 1,400 years and shows the advanced building skills of Goguryeo Era (37 BC-668 AD). The annual Ondal Culture Festival is held every October around Ondal Cave and Ondalsanseong Fortress in memory of the legendary love story between General Ondal and Princess Pyeonggang. Other attractions in the area include a theme park and Jangseung (Korean traditional totem poles) Park.

The representative temple of Odaesan, Woljeongsa Temple, was named after the bright, full moon that rises above Manwoldae (Mt. Dongdaesan). At this temple the famous Octagon shaped 9-story pagoda (National Treasure No.48) and the Stone Seated Buddha Figure (Treasure No.139) is preserved. Also, Jeokmyeolbogung of Woljeongsa is where Monk Ja Jang preserved the Sakyamuniâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s noble relics. Inside Woljeongsa Temple, follow the fir trees 5 km east, and you will reach Sagoji where Yeonggamsa Temple stands. Odaesan has the largest natural woods of Korea. Many wild animals and plants are known to exist here. The area of Birobong Peak is famous for its Nuncheunkbaek and Yew tree forests. The royal azelea and Geumgang Chorong from Durobong Peak to Sangwangbong Peak are famous and there are animals such as boars, musk deer, turtledoves and colorful woodpeckers living here.

27-28 February Located in the southeast region of the Korean peninsula, Busan is the country’s largest port city and boasts an abundance of coastal tourist attractions, historical and cultural sites, and trendy shopping areas. The city has a well-developed public transportation system, but for a more convenient and all-inclusive tour, hop aboard a Busan City Tour bus, which is comprised of a variety of one-day tours that cover the area’s major attractions.

Haeundae Beach Sandwiched between Dalmaji-gil Road (right) and Dongbaekseom Island (left), Haeundae Beach is an expansive, white-sand beach that is one of the most popular tourist sites in Busan. The beach is easily accessible via public transportation and is an ideal festival venue, hosting various events and celebrations throughout the year. In late fall, the beach serves as one of the stages of the Busan International Film Festival, the largest film festival in Asia. Loved by travelers for its convenient location, this gorgeous stretch of sand is particularly alluring at night when the light from nearby buildings sparkles off the black waves.

Strawberry Harvest Experience Saturday, 27 February

Strawberry Festival is held in Nonsan, the largest strawberry producer in Korea. Its rich soil and clean water and air give the region a perfect environment for growing excellent quality strawberries. It has been making its mark as a strawberry producer for 90 years, including 50 of which had full-scale production and shipment. The festival here helps elevate the regional economy and also functions to establish better communication among cities. Also, the festival is thought of as one of the most well-known festivals in Chungcheongnam-do, attracting a lot of domestic and overseas visitors. The festival takes place in the vicinity of Nonsancheon Stream and strawberry fields, and will feature various experiential programs like strawberry picking, strawberry cake baking, strawberry jam making, and other strawberry products events.

LUNAR Korea NEW YEAR Lunar New Year Celebrations in Korea Lunar New Yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day, or Seollal in Korean, is one of the most important traditional holidays of the year; the holiday is much more significant than January 1st to Koreans. Most businesses are closed, and people take several days off from work to visit their hometowns to be with their family. On the day of Seollal, everyone gets up early, puts on their best clothes, and bows to their elders as a reaffirmation of family ties. Feasts are held with specially prepared food such as tteokguk (sliced rice cake soup) and mandu-guk (dumpling soup). People play traditional folk games such as flying kites, or spinning tops.

Seol-nal

The morning of Seol-nal begins with an ancestral rite. Family members, dressed up for the occasion (traditionally in hanbok, but often in Western formal attire), gather in front of the ritual table and set on it an ancestral tablet and dishes of ritual foods, according to the laws of ancestral rites. Once set, the rite begins with deep bows as greetings to the ancestor spirits, and proceeds with offerings and prayers before ending with bidding farewell to the spirits. The ritual is conducted to express respect and gratitude to one’s ancestors and to pray for the family’s well-being throughout the year. Following the rite, everyone gathers together and eats the ritual food. The main dish of the day is tteokguk, a traditional soup made with sliced rice cakes, beef, egg, vegetables, and other ingredients. In Korea, eating tteokguk on New Year’s Day is believed to add a year to one’s age. People often ask each other, “How many servings of tteokguk have you had?” as a fun way to ask each other’s age. After the meal, the younger generations of the family pay respect to their elders by taking a deep bow called sebae, and by presenting them with gifts. Then, the elders offer their blessings and wishes for a prosperous year. Children often receive sebaetdon (New Year’s money) as a Seol-nal gift. For the remainder of the day, family members play traditional folk games, eat food, and share stories.

Tteokguk (Sliced Rice Cake Soup) Recipes Tteokguk is a soup made of diagonally sliced rice cakes simmered in beef broth, garnished with pressed meat, and fried egg white and yolk strips. People enjoy tteokguk made with sliced garaetteok on the first day of the year. Garaetteok is a rice cake rod that pulled it into a long rod. It is eaten in hopes of expanding one’s property like the rice cake rod.

Photo 5 Photo 6 Ingredient & Amount 600g white rice cake, 300g beef (brisket·shank), 1.6kg (8 cups) water, fragrant seasoning : 20g green onion, 10 g garlic seasoning sauce : 3g clear soy sauce, 1.1g (¼ tsp) minced green onion, 1.4g (¼ tsp) minced garlic, 0.1g black pepper 6g (1 tsp) clear soy sauce, 6g (1½ tsp) salt, 20g green onion, 60g (1 ea) egg, 1g shred red pepper

Ingredient & Preparation 1. Clean blood of beef with cotton cloths. Wash the fragrant seasoning cleanly. 2. Put the beef and water in the pot, heat it up for 7 min. on high heat. When it boils, lower the heat to medium, simmer it for 30 min. Add the fragrant seasoning, simmer it for another 30 min (Photo 2) 3. Shred the white rice cake 4cm-long, 0.2cm-thick diagonally (Photo 3) 4. Wash the green onion and cut it into 2cm-long lengthwise diagonally. 5. Pan-fry eggs for yellow/white garnish and cut into 2cm of diaper shape. 6. Cut the shred red pepper into 2cm-long

Recipe 1. Filter the simmered broth (1.4kg) through cotton cloths, rip up the beef along with the texture (160g). (Photo 4) 2. Pour the broth in the pot, heat it up for 5 min. on high heat. When it boils, add the sliced rice cake, boil for 3 min. When the rice cake float on the surface, season with clear soy sauce and salt, add green onion, bring it to a boil once more. (Photo 5) 3. Dip up the soup in a bowl, garnish with beef (80g), egg and shred red pepper.
