Youth of the Month: Skye Emmary Odom Skye Emmary Odom is our Youth of the Month for June. Skye has been with us for 9 months now. She is 10 years old and studies at Osan American Elementary School. Skye’s favorite subject is math because she says it’s fun, easy, and deals with numbers. She enjoys coming to the Youth Center to have fun with friends and participate in gym activities. Skye also happens to be the great money-saving, budget-handling Treasurer of the Torch Club. Some of her hobbies include shopping, singing, and playing volleyball. Skye has told us that when she grows up, she wants to be a Foster Care Leader, a singer and a community helper. She says her inspiration to help out her community came from watching the 2014 version of the movie Annie. She took part in our Talent Show back in March, where she showed off her great singing and dancing skills. Maybe she can plan a musical for all the kids at the Youth Center, just like in the movie Annie!!!

VISIT Nami Island, Saturday, 18 June
Namiseom Island (“Nami Island” for short) was formed as a result of the construction of Cheongpyeong Dam. The half-moon shaped island is named after the legendary General Nami, who is buried on the island. At the tender age of just 17, he was promoted to General and led a great victory during the Yi-Si Ae Rebellion under the Josean Dynasty in 1468. Nami Island is only 39 miles away from Seoul and is famous for its beautiful tree-lined roads. Due to its beauty, the island attracts millions of visitors year-round. Another fascinating feature about Nami Island is that it only be reached by ferry boat. The ferry transports passengers every 10-15 minutes on a rotating schedule. Another special feature is that there are no telephone poles. This is because all electric wires were built underground to keep the natural landscape feel. The island is measured at 553,560 square yards with chestnut trees and poplar trees spread throughout. In the middle of the isle lies a sprawling grassy field that features educational and training facilities as well as camping sites. The island also features a swimming pool and water sports facilities for motorboats and water skiing, as well as a theme park with a merry-go-round, shooting range and roller skating rink. Lodging facilities such as resort villas and bungalows are available for visitors who wish to stay overnight on the island.
[Gardens Featured throughout Nami Island] Sujaewon Garden, Changpyeongwon Garden, Hwaseokwon Garden, Sequoia Family Garden, Namipungwon Garden, Baekpungmilwon Garden, Nami Dodamsambong, White Birch Forest, Dew Garden, Tomb of the General, Lover’s Woods, Cheongyeongwon Garden, Changgyeongwon Garden, Unchi Garden, Nakusong Royal Garden, Cheongpungwon Garden, Pitowon Garden, YMCA LiPia Garden, Hampyeong Garden.

Guinsa Temple Saturday, 25 June
Bongeunsa Temple is located to the north of COEX building, and was constructed in the 10th year of Silla King Weongseong’s reign (794 AD). The temple’s original name was Gyeonseongsa. In 1498, Queen Jeonghyeon refurbished Gyeonseongsa Temple and renamed the temple Bongeunsa.
Guinsa Temple, located below Yeonhwabong Peak of Sobaeksan Mountain, is the headquarters of the Cheontae Order of Korean Buddhism, and presides over 140 temples across the nation. Standing on a lot measuring a total of 15,014 square meters, the temple has an impressive, five-story main sanctuary as well as over 50 chambers, and is bordered by modern buildings that can accommodate up to 10,000 visitors.
The temple was transferred to its current location during Joseon King Myeongjong’s reign. There are exactly 3,479 various Buddhist sculptures scattered throughout the temple. The sacred Buddhist ceremony known as the Jeongdaebulsa is held here every year on the 9th of September (Lunar calendar), where monks march carrying the Buddhist scriptures on their heads and recite the Beopseongge (Buddhist rites).
The temple was originally established by the Great Monk Sangwol Wongak in 1945, who first created a small cottage of arrowroot vine at the site as a place to practice asceticism. After receiving a revelation about the truths of the universe, the monk created Guinsa Temple in the spirit of celebration. The temple was later renovated in 1966 using a concrete frame, which was a very unique and fairly modern construction practice at the time.
Hiking Mt. Sanmaki Yetgil Saturday, 25 June The Sanmaki Yetgil (Old Road) is a 2.5 mile long path that connects Saorang Village to the mountain village of Sanmaki. This historical path is a great hiking trail where you will pass breathtaking mountains, streams and forests. Most of the path is paved in an ecofriendly method with wooden deck to minimize damages to the environment and to maintain a natural look. The surrounding beauty is recognized as the best scenic view in the County of Goesan.
Must-see parts of the temple include Deabeopdang Hall (the main sanctuary) and Beopeobi Monument (a Buddhist sermon monument). The five-story Daebeopdang Hall (built in 1980) is the largest Buddhist sanctuary in the nation and can seat up to 5,000 people. Beopeobi (full name: Beopeobi of Great Monk Sangwol) is a stone monument that is engraved with the teachings of Monk Wongak. The writings on the monument reflect the beliefs of the Tripitaka Koreana, one of the foundational texts of Buddhism.
