Osan AB has a flexible number of 50 care staff working with the children every day! All of this staff and care providers are highly trained in Early Childhood Theory and Practice, and attend continual training sessions monthly. They provide a curriculum designed for each individual child to learn through play. The curriculum is designed to touch on academic topics such as math and science, literature and art from 6 weeks all the way through 12 years old. Youth of the Month-Lana Marie Rocha Lana Marie Rocha is our Youth of the month for May. She is full of creative ideas for drawings and paintings. She is 10 years old and studies at Osan American Elementary School. She is very fun and one of the most energetic kids who come to the Youth Center. Lana loves to draw and paint with her friends. Her favorite thing about the Youth Center is the art room. She told us that Picasso is her favorite artist of all time. Lana recently joined the Torch Club and she has been doing an excellent job carrying out her marketing duties by volunteering and completing painting projects. Lana has been in Korea for 3 years now and she speaks both English and Korean fluently. She told us how much she loves her family, because she knows that her parents will do whatever it takes to take care of her. She wants to become a famous artist in the future who draws and paints nature. We asked her why she likes to draw nature, and she said, “I want people around the world to appreciate more of Mother Nature by looking at my arts and wanting to take care of them”. We are so happy to see our youth care so much about the environment and have figured out how she will support them by drawing beautiful art. In the near future we hope to see your paintings at Art exhibitions along with Picasso’s work Lana! We are so lucky to have your awesome talent in our Youth Center!!

Lotus Lantern Festival (Yeon Deung Hoe) Saturday, 7 May
Sansawon (Traditional Liquor Museum) Saturday, 14 May
The Lotus Lantern Festival is held every year in honor of Buddha’s Birth. The festival is preceded by hanging of lotus-shaped lanterns across Seoul for several weeks, and officially kicks off with lighting of the Jangeumdang, a large lantern that symbolizes Buddhism and Buddha’s Birthday, at the Seoul Plaza. The celebration continues with a wide array of Buddhist programs and activities, before ending with an impressive lantern parade in the heart of Seoul.
At Sansawon, visitors may sample food (rice cakes, Sanghwa dumplings, pickled vegetable soaked in rice wine leftovers, rice punch) and beverages made of liquor and liquor ingredients such as suljigemi (rice wine leftovers) or nureuk (yeast). The museum displays over 1,000 historical documents on traditional liquor as well as liquor brewery devices such as yakteul, nureukteul, gyeobogary, and sojugori. Moreover, the traditional brewing process, as seen in the folktale ‘Mrs. Kim’s Brewery’ is recreated using the actual tools and devices from the traditional brewing process. The museum also features the process and culture of Gayangju (homemade liquor) with puppets and dolls. Visitors will leave the facility with a deeper appreciation of the devotion of ancient Korean brewmasters and the art of traditional Korean liquor.
[Buddha’s Birthday] The 8th day of the 4th lunar month is the Buddha’s Birthday. Temples nationwide light lanterns to symbolically transmit the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha. They also perform ceremonies in celebration of his birth.
[Yeon Deung Hoe (Lighting Lantern Festival)] The Yeon Deung Hoe Festival originated in the Silla era more than 1,300 years ago. It has since been passed down through the Goryeo era, the Joseon era (where it was called “Palgwan Hoe”), and is still an annual tradition today. This traditional festival is designated Korea’s Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 122. By lighting lanterns at the Yeon Deung Hoe Festival, participants brighten their own hearts as well as the world. People flock to South Korea from all over the world to attend this festival.
At the Gayangju Class, operated by Sansawon, anyone who wants to know more about traditional liquor may have a chance to learn about liquor ingredients, liquor-related folktales, and the brewing process. You can even learn first-hand how to make traditional liquor. You may either take your alcohol home with you after the class or leave it at the museum and stop by for it later.

Baekje Cultural Land, built over a period of 17 years, is nestled in Gyuam-myeon, Buyeo-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, providing a home to Baekje’s Cultural Heritages. The complex was used as a filming site for “Running Man”, in the episode starring Jeong Wooseong and Han Hyoju. The site is spread out over 3,276,000 square meters, filled with the trace of Baekje Culture. Sabigung Palace reproduces the scenery of a royal palace during the Three Kingdoms period, and Neungsa Temple, a royal temple representative of Baekje, has been recreated according to the real size at the historic site in Neungsan-ri, Buyeo-eup. The Five-story Stone Pagoda, prominently seen after passing through Daetongmun Gate and Wiryeseong Fortress during Hanseong Baekje Era, gives a different aspect of Sabigung Palace. To enjoy the entire view of the complex at once, get on the Jehyangnu ferry. Buso Mountain was once considered the guardian mountain of Buyeo and is home to historic landmarks from the Baekje Kingdom (18 BC-660 AD). In addition to Buso Fortress, some of the most famous sites on the mountain include Baekhwajeong Pavilion, Sajaru Pavilion, Banwollu Pavilion, Yeongillu Pavilion, Samchungsa Shrine (dedicated to three loyal subjects of the Baekje Kingdom), Gungnyeosa Shrine, Goransa Temple, Gunchangji (military warehouse site), and Suhyeoljugeoji (site of pit houses for the Baekje soldiers). The mountain is also home to Nakhwaam Rock where, according to legend, 3,000 women of the Baekje Kingdom threw themselves into the river below after the collapse of the empire.
Ondal Cave Saturday, 28 May Ondal Cave is located underground at the foot of Seongsan Mountain, where Ondal Fortress is situated. It is a natural limestone cave that is estimated to have begun forming around 450 million years ago. The total 760 meter-long cave covers an area of 349,485 square meters. The cave mouth is two meters high, while the cave itself is 5 to 10 meters high and about 5 meters wide. The cave features stairway structure and contains an abundance of beautiful stalagmites and stalactites. The average temperature of the cave maintains 14 degrees Celsius in summer and 16 degrees Celsius in winter, making it a perfect all-year-round attraction. The cave is rich in underground water resources and there is a 0.8 to 1 meter-deep cave river flowing at the bottom of the cave floor. The cave also has over 40 small ponds that are inhabited by a variety of living organisms like fish and insects. Situated on top of the mountain peak to the left of the cave is Ondal Fortress. The fortress has been preserved in its original form throughout some 1,400 years and shows the advanced building skills of Goguryeo Era (37 BC-668 AD). The annual Ondal Culture Festival is held every October around Ondal Cave and Ondalsanseong Fortress in memory of the legendary love story between General Ondal and Princess Pyeonggang. Other attractions in the area include a theme park and Jangseung (Korean traditional totem poles) Park.
