Thanks to the work of these intrepid gentlemen, today’s weather-watchers have several ways to express the degree (so to speak) of heat or cold. Celsius Celsius: A Swedish scientist, Anders Celsius (1701-1744) developed the Celsius temperature scale, which he himself called “centigrade” because it was developed on a scale of 0º for the freezing point of water to 100º for its boiling point. Fahrenheit Fahrenheit: In addition to inventing the temperature scale that bears his name, German scientist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686-1736) invented the first mercury thermometer contained in glass. Fahrenheit developed his termperature scale by referencing three fixed points: 0º, 32º (ice forming on the surface) and 98.6 (thermometer’s reading when placed in the mouth). Kelvin Kelvin: William Thomson, the first Baron Kelvin (1824-1907), was a British mathematical physicist and engineer. Although the existence of absolute zero was known during his lifetime, Kelvin is credited for determining its exact value (-273.15C, or -460 F.). For this reason, absolute temperatures are expressed in units of kelvin. Parson, S. (2015, March). Gone, but Not Forgotten. FAA Safety Briefing, 36.

Caves in Korea
Merriam-Webster Defines Caves: A natural chamber or series of chambers in the earth, side of a hill, or cliff. The world is full of these empty pockets beneath the earth’s surface so it’s no wonder Korea would be home to some of the most spectacular to explore.
Gosu Cave
Designated as a natural monument, Gosu is a beautiful, 1,300 meter deep, limestone cave situated in Danang-gun, South Korea. Surprisingly, it got its name from the fact the area used to have rich, tall thickets of grass growing beyond its gapping mouth. Rough stone instruments, excavated at the entrance, suggest prehistoric human beings made the cave their home. Now, some 25 different types of animals call Gosu home. Amazingly, some of the rocks resemble creatures, and even a human figure! Names such as: Lion Rock, Octopus Rock, Eagle Rock and even Virgin Mary Rock were given to them. About 120 stalactites and stalagmites found in Gosu Cave are considered valuable remains for researchers and scholars alike. Despite its steady 59 degree F temperature throughout the year, it is recommended you wear warm gloves for this awe inspiring place.
Ondal Cave
Deep underground beneath Seongsan Mountain, is the 450 million year old natural limestone cave, Ondal. Situated near Ondalsanseong Fortress, it covers an area of 349,485 square meters and totals 760 meters in length! Like a sleeping dragon in the Land of the Morning Calm, one only need enter through the 2 meter high open mouth to descend into another world. Ondal Cave has a belly 5-10 meters high by 5 meters wide, depending on where you are. There’s always an abundance of beautiful stalagmites, stalactites, whispering water pools, and mysterious stairways. With temperatures remaining a constant 57.2-60.8 degrees F, Ondal is at the top of the list for places to explore when going below!

FORCE MAGAZINE MAY 2015
Every person has a story to tell... SSgt Isaac Garden, of the U.S. Air Force, is the NCOIC of broadcasting and can be found in the AFN Radio building. This is his first tour to Korea, arriving only a short time ago in November. One might think Isaac would embrace the Korean chill since Chicago is his hometown, but this last winter became his most difficult time. “It was crazy cold outside. I’m not a fan of the cold. Yes, I’m from Chicago, but that’s exactly the reason why I don’t like the cold. I had to endure it for twenty-one years!” he laughed. Isaac is looking forward to getting out and about, exploring Korea to the fullest extent through ITT and Outdoor Rec. “I want to bungee jump, go hang gliding, zip line, and do everything else.” Isaac can be found enjoying a game of pool at the Enlisted Club now and again, or eating pasta three times a week at Pizza Hut. His ultimate goal is to someday own a business and be his own boss. Listen for Isaac! You just might hear him on the radio or see him around Osan. He loves to meet people, even share life experiences as he crosses paths with others… and it shows. Everyone here at FSS wants to wish SSgt Isaac Garden the very best, especially now that the weather is warming up. His fun is just beginning!
Private (E2) Logan Tilley, a Patriot Launcher Operator and Maintainer for the U.S. Army, is fresh out of basic training with eleven months of service and Osan Air Base is his very first tour! No doubt, Korea is very different from his hometown of Selmer, Tennessee and he’s taking it all in. “Logan is my name but everyone calls me Tilley,” he smiled. Besides the movie theater and enjoying some soup and sandwiches at Bella Pannini’s, Tilley said he’s determined to not become a “barracks rat”. He plans to make the most of his tour. He enjoys going to MiG Alleys Bowling Center with friends. “I love the atmosphere, and the bowling is great, but I’m horrible at it,” he laughed. He also enjoys hanging out at the Enlisted Club to play pool. Tilley wants to go on trips with ITT, and check out some ATV adventures with Outdoor Rec. He’s also looking forward to the Osan’s Got Talent show coming up. Everyone here at FSS wants to wish Private Logan Tilley the very best as his time to explore and experience Osan is just getting started. May this tour be your most memorable!
