Bear Tree Park There’s a feast for the senses waiting for you at Bear Tree Park, located about an hour south of Osan Air Base in Sejong of Chungcheongnam Province, a beautiful place built to honor the Manchurian Black Bear. The 82 acres of indoor-outdoor botanicals are a breathtaking walk through vibrant color. It’s easy to forget animals live there when you become so lost in the serene beauty of this landscape, but bronze statues, white peacocks, and deer, remind you there are bears to see, waiting like a big hug at the end of a wonderful trip.

Good walking shoes, a camera, and won for feeding the animals are great “must have’s” for the best experience. You’ll never see the landscape the same way twice because every thing can be seen from different perspectives giving new, inspiring views. From the thousands of trees to roses, flowers, and towering rocks, no stone is ever left uncared for or detail left out.

FORCE MAGAZINE MARCH 2015

Carrots aren’t just for rabbits anymore! At Bear Tree Park, for a mere 1,000 won you can get a cup of this favorite veggie to feed the animals. The fuzzy bears will literally wave at you, sometimes even dance for your attention from their playgrounds… anything for a carrot! There’s something different for the fish but they aren’t ignored.

Imagine being miniaturized. Now look up! You see a forest of the most perfect trees you’ve ever seen, so what makes these so unique is they are Bonsai. Welcome to the impressive Bonsai Tree Exhibit. The amount of time, knowledge, and care that goes into the caring of these creations is incredible. It is an absolute photo capture opportunity. The hardest part is not being able to take one home, let alone not touching one to see if it’s even real.

Cross a bridge over still waters with floating Lilly Pads, disturbed only when thousands of Koi rush to the surface to eat. It’s a splash of orange splendor you’ll never forget, so bring that won, feeding the animals is slightly addicting! Whether you want to go alone for an awesome photo op, go with friends, or take your family for a fun day, Bear Tree Park will never disappoint. For the avid Teddy Bear collectors, or if you have a loved one you want to remember, then check out the Bear Store before you leave and take a Teddy Bear home with you! Book a Tour! AROUND OSAN Every person has a story to tell... I

t was such a pleasure meeting SrA Joseph Dockery III the other day in the lounge of the Community Center. He was looking to escape the sudden snowfall, even if only for a moment of warmth, and in those brief fifteen minutes, we got to meet an amazing person. Originally from Washington D.C., time, moving and seeing the world can do much to change ones perspective, Joseph was no exception explaining how he had come to appreciate the outer, peaceful reaches of suburban life more. He admitted this first Korean tour would be more fullfilling if he had his family with him. So, he’s glad it’s nearing an end for he misses his wife and two children very much. It showed. Like so many on tour here, Joseph found ways to fill up his free time. Don’t know if he’s heard music from his favorite artists Luther Vandrose or Sam Smith playing on base, but you might find him at his favorite resturaunt, The Oriental House, or his hangout, The Fitness Center. Joseph’s most memorable moment so far was when he got to referee the High School Basketball team on base. His most embarrassing moment came when officiating; a moment he labeled, “rookie growing pains”. Joseph wants to see South Daegu before his tour is over. His dream is to watch his children grow up and marry. In this months’ special interview question, Joseph simply answered: “If I could have superhuman power it would be to fly so I could get from place to place quickly and see even more.” “All the best to you and your family, Joseph. Thank you for your service!”

FORCE MAGAZINE MARCH 2015 he snow outside didn’t have any effect on the native, New York soldier towering above us, when the interviewing at the Community Center led us to Private First Class Smith. He was happy to smile and tell us that Korea was about the same except for the hot summers. Arriving eight months ago, Smith was put with Charlie Detachment, 1st Space Company; fresh out of Army Individual Training for Vehicle Mechanic. His passion was as big as his smile and almost as big as his manners. So refreshing! When asked what accomplishments he was most proud of so far, he answered, “Joining the Army and working towards a degree in Criminal Justice.” Smith talked about missing his favorite Venison Lasagna but loved the Bulgogi and Yakimandu found here in Korea when we talked about food. The Oriental House on base, or a place called Izmures off base, are two of his favorite places to eat. For hangouts he replied, “The Community Center is great for playing Pool, but I also go to the Orphanage to see the kids… see them inspired with faith for something better” Smith was wonderfully candid when he opened up and told his most embarrassing moment. “I have a reputation for being a good hitter,” he said. “When my CW4 got word of this during our softball game, he sent me up to bat at the end of the game, but I ended up striking out for every ball!” Smith dropped and shook his head. When changing subjects, it became evident how PFC Smith loves family and children. He talked about how he wished he could be home long enough with his wife to start a family of their own. When asked what superhuman power would he take if he could, his answer came quickly: “Fly, so I could get from place to place faster.” His response matched his deep hearted desire to be with the one he loves, as well as protect those in need. Despite his allergies to dogs, the one species that could match his future occupational ambitions to become an MP, this writer hopes time will heal this soldier and make all his dreams come true. “Every story deserves to be told and we wish this soldier and his family all the happiness they can hold. Thank you for your service!”

S

nowed in? No, but it was no problem finding A1C James Harris from Nampa Idaho, standing behind the welcome desk, ready to greet us with a smile and lots of youngin’ charisma at the Community Center.

“Differences between Idaho and Korea? Well, the food’s way better here!” James nodded with great enthusiasm. I can tell you, he isn’t having a problem with this first Korean tour at all. And his position? I asked but before I got an answer he quickly disappeared so he could find out. “Community Center Specialist!” he came back, again with great energy. I can tell you, while he is behind that desk, the Community Center energy will jump a couple notches! James admitted his greatest achievement in life was getting through basic training. “I was lazy before and after basic, after AIT, I got a work ethic.” He entered service January 22, 2013 and came to Korea in November. His favorite food is Pizza, but when he’s not working, it’s likely you’ll find James at the Gingko Tree or the Fitness Center. James plans to go to Jeju Island before his tour is up and if he could have any dream come true, he would meet Dave Grohl from his favorite music group, the Foo Fighters. “Thank you James for an awesome interview and for your service! I’m sure we’ll hear more as your story continues!”

Probable Future One common future tense is the probable future tense. It can be used to mean “I probably will eat.” “I probably will go to school tomorrow.” This is probably the most similar (in my opinion) to our English future tense. If you just intend to say will go, will eat...this future tense may be your best bet. The basic formation of this future tense is as follows: Take the verb base, 먹 for our example using 먹다. Attach (으)ㄹ 거에요 to the verb base. If the base ends in a consonant, you attach 을 거에요. If it ends in a vowel, you attach ㄹ 거에요. 난 먹을 거에요 - I will probably eat. 난 갈 거에요 - I will probably go. 비가 올 거에요 - It will probably rain. One thing to keep in mind. Remember back to when you learned some irregular verb cases? 듣다 being one. It appears as 듣다 in the dictionary form, and 들어요 when conjugated? Well, when using this for these few special verbs, use the ㄹ ending on the base and not the ㄷ. 들을 거에요 Will listen. Also, remember how some verbs pick up a ㅂ and sometimes not? Example - 춥다...well, in this case, it will not take the ㅂ, but will pick up an 우. 추울 거에요 Will probably be cold. Past Probable You can also use this form with a past tense verb, to mean ‘must have’ or ‘probably have’. The example with 먹다 would be 먹었을 거에요. Notice the past tense ending is attached to the verb base, not the 거에요 verb part. 먹었을 거에요 would mean ‘must have eaten. “Probably ate.” Intentional Future The other form of the future tense you will see often will use 겠. The meaning is similar to the above future tense, but varies slightly. This form is more of the meaning “I intend to, I’m positive it will happen, etc.” Here is how it is formed. Take your verb base (whatever is before 다 in the dictionary form, no exceptions. 듣다 does not change to 들 as above. 듣겠어요). Attach 겠 to that base. Then simply add your 어 or 어요 ending you normally would use. Note the ending is always 어요 and never 아요, even for verbs such as 자다. 먹겠어요 means I intend to eat. 비가 오겠어요 means I’m sure it will rain. See how it is a little different from the previous future tense? This form has more certainty.

There are two sets of numbers in Korea, the native Korean and the Sino-Korean Numbers. Sino-Korean numbers are borrowed from Chinese. Generally speaking, for expression involving dates, money, foreign loanwords, minutes, seconds and counting beyond 99 Sino-Korean numbers are used otherwise its the native Korean numbers. You might be wondering why some numbers are skipped in both numeral systems, this is because there are certain patterns to achieve the numbers in-between.
