FCORNCEERET ADMISSION
Kristen is candid and down to earth, with a room-filling smile and a voice that echoes the heart of what she sings. She describes her music as “a little more grease than polish” --and that grease is an exciting mix, distilled from her country, blues and classic rock influences into a passionate, playful, often sexy and always heartfelt reflection of real life as she knows it. Her musical style embraces influences ranging from Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles and Bob Seger, to singer/ songwriter Patty Griffin to the blues and soul of Ray Charles, Susan Tedeschi and Bonnie Raitt, while her country roots were shaped in part by the sounds of the ‘80s and ‘90s.
With his first album, Bucky earned a place in the forefront of a new generation of country singers. He became the best-selling debut artist of the class of 2007, with the best first-week sales and highest Top 200 debut for any male country artist in 15 years. He appeared on Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live and many others, became part of the Country Sings Disney project, and appeared in Hannah Montana: The Movie. His undeniable likeability and his ability to wear his stardom as comfortably as his jeans has done the rest. Both come together on stage, where the long-haired North Carolinian with the rocker’s charisma and the country boy charm thrills old and new fans alike.

OXANA BALAKINA FITNESS COORDINATOR AT THE HEALTH AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE CENTER ON CAMP CASEY
Article by SSG Joshua Mitchell
Photos by: SPC Sean Sweeny
Fitness is a paramount part of the military lifestyle. Being physically fit not only allows a Soldier to conduct his tactical duties as aggressively or efficiently as necessary, but also provides a level of self-confidence that leaders strive to attain. On the Korean peninsula, particularly in Area 1, the Family Morale Welfare & Recreation (FMWR) professionals take pride in providing high quality fitness facilities managed by individuals who not only enjoy being physically fit, but take pride and care in making sure our service members are as healthy as possible. One such individual is the Area 1 Fitness Coordinator: Oxana Balakina. Mrs. Balakina is a certified personal trainer, group fitness, yoga and indoor cycling instructor. She has held her current title for just about a year. On Camp Casey, just behind the Hanson Field House, you will find the Health and Human Performance Center. This quaint building is not nearly as large as the Field House or the recently renovated Carey Fitness Center; however, it houses a nice array of alternate exercise stations for pull ups, heavy battle ropes, and plenty of open space for Pilates, yoga, and/or martial arts workouts. They even have my personal favorite: massage chairs to get the blood flowing and loosen the stiffness we may encounter in our daily work. The facility is very nice but the most important piece to it is in an office just to your left as you enter. Here you will find Oxana planning out new workout routines,

organizing schedules for units to work out, discussing meal plans for service members who need nutritional awareness, or gearing up to provide tutorials on the various exercises available in her facilities. On my first meeting with Oxana, she greeted us with a shy smile and a firm handshake. I could tell immediately she was more about action than words. Although she is a woman of small stature, you can clearly see her physical conditioning is phenomenal. Although she has been a professional fitness trainer for three years or so, fitness has been a part of the Russian native’s life for a long time. When asked about what the catalyst was that drove her to change her focus onto keeping others fit, her response was without pause. “I have always, loved sports and the outdoors. And like many, I had my share of injuries and downfalls over the years. I came to understand that a knowledgeable and smart approach to training and working out is the key to success. That’s how I decided to become a certified professional trainer and share my knowledge and passion for fitness,” Oxana said with a smile. In the military we are always on the go. The higher ranking you are, it seems there’s less free time for leisure things, exercising included. I was curious about her take on this, and what would be the best way to counter the day to day situation of someone who is generally very busy. Her belief is that all people should try to remain physically engaged, along with having the proper mindset to maximize their health, and live their life to the fullest. “I really believe that if you stay active, and stay positive—you can do anything,” Oxana pointed out with conviction. One-on-one training is what most people believe will get them where they need to be the fastest. Large classes tend to be preferred by people who might be
Feature Article a little shy or embarrassed, wishing to get their sweat on while blending into a crowd. For Oxana, the small group environment, about the size of a squad, tends to suit her clients best. In this setting, she can focus on individuals while helping several people at once, without anyone getting lost in the crowd. She believe this is the most efficient way to help people. This small team of individuals can also build camaraderie when working out together, which delves into the military’s team-building philosophy. It was also noted that in these small groups, it’s easier to motivate an individual who is on the verge of quitting, as their friends and battle buddies are there to support them. As a Modern Army Combatives and Brazilian Jiujitsu instructor myself, this segued into a sidebar conversation about getting people who don’t enjoy working out into the gym. I was curious about her thoughts in this matter, along with what we can do to combat it. “The biggest challenge I face isn’t physical, but rather a social challenge in getting people off the couch, and go outdoors.” Oxana continues. “There is more to life than just playing video games; people need to change their mindset if they want to be healthy.” Anyone who has been in the Army for more than a couple of days knows that the Physical Readiness Training (PRT) Soldiers conduct every morning is meant to maintain your current level of fitness. It’s meant to keep you from getting out of shape. However, if you want to increase your physical fitness (become a stud, if you will) then you have to do more. Oxana’s belief is we either turn up the intensity of PRT, or we change our PRT plans to incorporate more innovative exercise routines to keep our bodies from getting stagnant into a routine and eventually plateauing.
“Workouts should be more diverse, working different areas, to help make the Soldiers stronger, not just in appearance.” Oxana explained. All of the different venues in Area 1 designed to facilitate healthy, physical and mental growth in Soldiers are great for morale, and provide Soldiers with better opportunities to be successful warfighters. With so many strong programs already existing, having a dedicated professional like Oxana onboard certainly enhances the quality of fitness services available to the community. The Area 1 Sports and Aquatics Director, Larry Butler has nothing but praise for the work Oxana has put in at the Health and Human Performance Center. “The true difference I see with Oxana is that she really, REALLY loves what she does. When she is not training others, she is training herself. Very rarely do you find someone with such devotion to their vocation. She’s a huge boon to our program!” Larry proudly added. We wrapped up this interview jesting about different workout scenarios and discussing how we could implement combatives and similar realistic training methods into our daily PRT schedules. I gave a jovial question of whether she had anything else to add and she replied with fervor… “I am very thankful that my family and I can feel safe and protected because of our military. I encourage them every day to do their best. It is got to be difficult to start every morning with intense PRT but if this is the only workout you will have, MAKE IT COUNT! It is for YOU; to help you succeed in your life and mission! You will never regret the workout you had, but sure will regret the one you didn’t,” said Oxana with sincerity. If you have any questions regarding fitness, please contact Oxana at the Health and Human Performance Center (HHPC) at 730-6005.

PFC LYNETTEE UVALLES
Camp Stanley BOSS Program
Army Community Service
V
COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
the training she received increased her selfconfidence immensely, inspiring her to attain the knowledge required and emulate the skills she sees in her leaders. That dedication and her prolific work with BOSS did not go unnoticed, as she was selected as the 61st CBRN Company’s BOSS representative. She then took responsibility and diligently promoted Camp Stanley BOSS events using every opportunity, such as at company formations and her unit’s weekly BOSS board, in an effort to get the word out effectively to the Stanley community. PFC Uvalles currently holds the executive member position of Secretary for Camp Stanley BOSS. As the BOSS Secretary, she attends all Stanley BOSS council meetings; a role which required her to stay after hours, ensuring all discussions for events and ideas were recorded accurately for proper execution. Additionally, PFC Uvalles assumed the role and responsibilities of both BOSS President and Vice President during their absence. In an off-duty capacity, PFC Uvalles volunteered numerous hours in support of events such as the Gateway Club Re-Opening, Camp Casey Pool Grand Re-Opening, Camp Stanley Color Run, the Annual BOSS Beach Blast in Yeonpo Beach, and the monthly Camp Stanley Ville CleanUp. Her efforts helped make Camp Stanley BOSS into the successful program that it is today.
If asked to describe PFC Lynettee Uvalles with one word, “Dedication” quickly comes to mind. Hailing from Houston, Texas, PFC Uvalles has made a difference to the community since she was deployed to Camp Stanley as part of the 61st CBRN, 23rd CBRNE BN. A 74D Chemical Operation Specialist by occupation, PFC Uvalles arrived in January 2015 and soon became a dedicated member of the Camp Stanley, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS) team. Throughout this time, she’s proven eager to help the BOSS program succeed, often lending a great deal of her off-duty time in support of numerous BOSS events and eventually earning her more than 100 off-duty volunteer hours since arriving to Area I. As a member of the Initial Entry Team in 61st CBRN, 1st squad, PFC Uvalles remains devoted to her work. In fact,
PFC Uvalles is an outstanding Soldier who understands and exemplifies professionalism, raising pride and awareness about the Camp Stanley BOSS program, and setting an example during both her on-duty and off-duty hours. She is a Soldier who is always looking to give something back to the community. PFC Uvalles is a valued member of the Camp Stanley BOSS Council and the Area I community, her support and unselfish dedication to volunteerism is greatly appreciated. It is for this reason we take time to say “Thank you, PFC Uvalles!” and put you in the Area I Volunteer Spotlight, for the month of October 2015. IN THE ZONE
