Some highlights of 2015: Gateway Club Renovation, Carey Fitness Center Renovation, BOSS program came away for the third year in a row, with BEST BOSS in Pacific, our new Virtual Golf Program at Casey Golf, new Kitchen & Buffet at Casey Golf; redesign of the Mitchell’s programs, decoration, menu and entertainment; LT Dan Band & Gary Sinise Concert, Bucky Covington and Kristen Kelly Concert, Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders, Sesame Street Visit, started the renovation of the Casey Swimming Pool, arrival of the new Casey Garrison Commander (LTC Gardner), and we could go on and on! The FMWR Team hopes you ‘rang’ in the New Year with a ‘big bang’ celebration either with us at Mitchell’s, Gateway, Reggie’s Pub—or at your very own party! Regardless of which it was, prepare for lots of great stuff for you to participate in, eat at, travel to or just ‘Chillax’ with…FMWR is here to get the New Year started with all of your recreational needs; beginning with a January trip to the luxurious High One Ski Resort in Korea, and an overseas Vietnam Tour in February 2016. Be on the lookout for our revised Warrior Guide, available at ACS in January. This guide will help you understand your environment, surroundings, Korean culture, food, using the transportation system, learning the language and much more.

MY TAIPEI ADVENTURE SIGHTSEEING & SHOPPING WITH FAMILY AND MWR NOVEMBER 26-29, 2015

Story & Photos by: SPC Sean Sweeny

20

USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

You may have seen the banners hanging around post, or the advertisements in this magazine for a Taiwan trip; but perhaps you decided against it because the overall cost scared you off, or you were worried you might not get to see much of the country during a 4–day trip. If these were the reasons you abstained, I’m sorry; you just missed out on a really cool, ‘bang for your buck’ trip, courtesy of FMWR. What you may not have realized is the cost was all-inclusive, with the airfare, four-star hotel room and every meal (yep, every meal including breakfast, lunch and dinner), and tours to key locations, were all covered in your tour payment. The only pocket money you had to bring was essentially for souvenirs and

other knickknacks you might see along the way. You might ask yourself “with a limited amount of time, how much can I possibly see in a 4-day period?” To answer your question, the second we got off the plane and onto the tour bus with our tour guide, Ms. Olivia; we got right to business and went straight to our first location: The National Place Museum. The museum is home to over 650,000 priceless Chinese artifacts including jade, porcelain, paintings and bronze castings. With so many artifacts to display only about 1,700 are put out at one time, for about three months. At that rate, it would take almost a 100 years to cycle through everything the museum had to offer. Talk about not wasting time….off the plane, and straight to a museum to understand history & Taiwanese culture. After dinner we capped it off by touring the 101 Building, considered the tallest building in the world from 2004 to 2011. The stabilizing sphere at the top of the building is a technological marvel to witness; they even had a video showing how the sphere responded by stabilizing the structure during earthquakes and violent storms—a comforting thought, especially when we ascended the observatory deck on the 89th floor

Feature Article

While in Korea, you probably have been advised to experience local culture and take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to visit other countries in Asia. Family, Morale, Wellness and Recreation (FMWR) realizes this, and is providing Soldiers, families and civilians an opportunity to participate in one of their quarterly tours to exotic overseas destinations. This quarter’s trip was slated for Taipei, Taiwan…and let me tell you, it did not disappoint at all.

Feature Article where we were able to gaze out and see all of Taipei, which truly was a sight to see. “Being able to go up the tower was incredible. The building lit up with different colors from the outside, and we were able to see so far out into the city. Taking this trip was great, it kept us busy all day and enabled us to see many great things like the 101 building.” Said Staff Sergeant Stephanie Denune. On our second day we started off at the Yehliu Geo Park, considered one of the most famous wonders in the world: a stunning geological landscape created by rock weathering, constant waves crashing in, and earth movements throughout the millennia. The area was divided into three different areas with specific rock structures such as the Mushroom Rock, and Candle Rock. From the Geo Park we traveled to Jiufen, an old town that has undergone a massive transformation from ghost mining town, to a tourist destination with its side street markets and landmarks, such as its local theater; pristinely preserved just the way it was supposed to look like in the 1950’s. “Juifen village had such a great view of the shore, and there was a lot of history behind every building. This probably would have been a place I wouldn’t have even known to check out. The whole experience has been such a good escape from everyday life on post.” Said Specialist See Won Hwang Yu. Once we were done in Jiufen we made our way to the Pingxi Sky Lantern Experience, where we were

22

USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

lined up to receive our own lanterns. These lanterns have gone from being used as alarms or signals to what they are today: as a symbol of peace and good fortune. We were then handed paintbrushes and were given time to decorate our own lanterns after being shown how certain colors represented different things. Once we were done decorating, we released our lanterns into the open sky, floating amidst a backdrop of an amazingly beautiful sunset. Our day didn’t end there though, as we then traveled to Lungshan Temple; a primarily Buddhist temple, which has since added many deities of Taoism throughout the centuries. After walking through the temple, we made our way across the street where we enjoyed shopping for souvenirs at the Lungshan Temple Street Night Market. On the third day, we arrived at Tamsui River where we experienced two different boardwalk type locations that offered an interesting variety of foods, shops and games to partake in. In between the two boardwalks we took a ferry which took us to the other side of the Tamsui River. While the trip may have been only a few minutes long, it still gave everyone a beautiful view of both areas, an ideal setting for scenic photographs. Once we returned to Taipei proper, we then went to Ximending Street, where we were once again let loose to shop and enjoy the local commerce. On the fourth day (and with our looming flight back to South Korea), most on the trip thought it would be an uneventful day. That was however not the case, as we started our morning off by heading into the heart of Taipei City and visiting the Chiang Kai Shek

Feature Article Memorial Hall. The hall was a 250,000 square meter structural marvel, inspired by Tiantan in Beijing; which coincidentally, also had four sides reminiscent of the pyramids in Egypt. Little trivia info: there are 87 steps leading up to the top of the Hall, which was the age of Shek when he passed away. After the Memorial Hall, we made our way to our final location to the Lin Family Mansion and Garden. Although most of the Mansion was closed off due to its fragile condition, the garden is still a pleasant place to walk around and take interesting photos of.

Overall, you might see the ads for these trips and think the price is too high, or you might not see enough in four days. However, let me say that this is truly not the case during this trip. Afterwards, I felt as if I had spent two weeks in Taiwan; I had seen and experienced so much culture in one place, probably in my lifetime. One of the best parts of all of this is that you don’t have to plan a thing; FMWR makes sure that you don’t have to worry about a thing, all you have to do is literally hop on the tour bus and be ready for an all new experience!

“You are only here for about a year, this is a great chance to be able to view and experience another culture. The price might seem a little high but it is worth it being able to see all these historical sites, and be able to compare it all to Korea,” said First Lieutenant Alvin Yasay.

For more information on our next overseas Vietnam Tour in February, please call or visit your local Area I Community Activity Center, or go to page 14 of this In The Zone for trip details.

Throughout this whole trip we had an opportunity to see a whole new culture through sight, sound— and taste! Ms. Olivia did a great job picking out the Taiwanese restaurants for us to dine at while we were out and about. We sampled traditional Chinese noodles and dumplings; and experienced an authentic seafood restaurant where we ate different dishes throughout. The food experience in itself, was a fun way to bond with other people throughout this visit.

USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

Martial arts is a huge part of my life: the movies, the training, the technique, the strategy; most of all, watching live fights. Having been involved in martial arts for the better part of twenty years. I have seen a lot of martial arts competitions and tournaments. They all pale in comparison to what I got to witness on November 28th, 2015 courtesy of USAG Red Cloud & Area 1 Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR); the Ultimate Fighting Championships: Fight Night Seoul at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul, South Korea. First off let me say that I didn’t expect this card to be fun. The main event, Benson Henderson vs Thiago Alves had a switch and Alves was out. The Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic` fight had been all-around cancelled. None of the card members, other than Henderson, were on the “superstar” level, so I didn’t expect to be impressed. Boy was I wrong. Out of the eleven fights, only two of them I considered boring. You could tell that these were hungry fighters, trying to become the best in the world.

The sold out stadium was packed to the brim. My seat was about halfway to the top, so I wasn’t sure how well I’d be able to see the actual fight. My worries were washed away once the fights started, however, as the giant screens were clearer than life I swear. It was hard to look at the real fight with the expert camera work of the UFC personnel showing every angle on the big screens.

Feature Article

All of that is good, but the REAL entertainment, for me, came from the crowd. My experiences here in Korea has shown me that the Korean population is very conscious of their countrymen performing and representing outside of their nation. I first realized this when watching the recent hit “Terminator Genisys” in the CGV movie theatre in Uijeongbu. Very early in the movie a police officer, played by Korean actor Byung-hun Lee, appears on the screen and the entire theater claps and cheers as a father seeing his kid playing football would. Time and time again, if I’m with a Korean friend and/or KATUSA, they will point out if someone is Korean in a movie or TV show. Well the UFC was no exception.

All-in-all I would say it was a very pleasant experience. FMWR provided two buses to pick up and drop off people from Camps Casey, Stanley and Red Cloud. This allowed us to not be stressed out about curfew and to genuinely enjoy the fights. My only true critique was the lack of food on site. There were hot dogs and drinks and that was about it. Otherwise I would say it was an overall great experience and I suggest it to anyone who is a fight fan or eager to find out what all the MMA fuss is about. A Saturday night well spent. For information on future events take a look inside the “In The Zone” magazine and/or contact your local Community Activity Center.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - NOVEMBER 28: Seohee Ham of South Korea looks for an opening on Cortney Casey of the United States of America in their strawweight bout during the UFC Fight Night at the Olympic Park Gymnastics Arena on November 28, 2015 in Seoul, South Korea. (Photo by Mitch Viquez/ Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

Every time a Korean fighter was up the crowd went nuts the moment their music started. Every kick, punch, take down, and even blocked attacks got a reaction out of the crowd. Every minute or two the crowd would start chanting their fighters name. When female mixed martial artist Ham, Seo Hee came out to the Black Eyed-Peas hit “Imma Be,” the crowd went insane. When she won her match, the two females sitting in front of me stood on their seats making as much noise as they possibly could. It was truly an experience to remember.

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

MRS. BRENDY SANTIAGO

Story by Patrick Schoolfield, ACS Program Manager

“I volunteer to make a difference!” Mrs. Brendy Santiago’s statement is short, simple and purely from the heart. Brendy and husband, Ray, joined our Area I community just this past February after completing an accompanied tour of duty with the Naval Support Activity Bahrain in the Middle East. True to heart, Brendy arrived and hit the ground, full speed running! She immediately sought out the Army Volunteer Corp Coordinator (AVCC), located at USAG Casey Army Community Service (ACS) for assistance on learning more about volunteer opportunities in the Area I community. The rest is history, as they say! To date, Brendy accumulated more than 350 volunteer hours, donating her time serving at different capacities and undertaking various roles and responsibilities across the USAG-Red Cloud Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) organization. Brendy has served as the Volunteer Catering Manager at the Camp Red Cloud’s Mitchell’s Club, and played high-profile roles in numerous FMWR Special Events. Her favorites are those involving FMWR Special Events, she confides. However, it is through all the many volunteer opportunities that Brendy strives to make a difference and give back to the community.

48

USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

The heart for Volunteerism began at a very young age for Brendy and her twin sister Brandy. Oh yes, there are indeed two of them! Their mother would take them to the local nursing home and rehabilitation hospitals where they would spend time with patients, playing board games, talking with them, walking with them through the halls, and encouraging them to take their medicine. You see, many of those patients did not have family or friends, and rarely had visitors. It was during these times that volunteering began to take root. She noticed how the faces of those patients would light up each time she and her sister arrived. Those patients’ disposition would change from grumpy and refusing to take their meds, to eventual compliance and cooperation. The time Brendy and sister spent with them made the difference! The patients felt more appreciated and not forgotten because of it. These events left a lasting impression on Brendy. Now as an adult, she continues to find ways to volunteer by immersing herself into her community. It is an attribute she has also passed on and instilled in her own children. Her kids, Constancia and Ramon, are themselves now adults; but Brendy ensured that her kids grew up understanding the importance of giving back to their community and that they have a deep appreciation for volunteering. The Santiago family have fostered the spirit of volunteerism throughout the years, creating long lasting bonds with friends and acquaintances, and of course; fond memories of giving back to their community by volunteering together as a family. Mrs. Brendy Santiago’s warm personality and cheerful smile continues to light up the faces of those she engages with in the community. Although currently employed with FMWR, Brendy still finds time to volunteer outside of her busy work schedule. Through volunteer opportunities, Brendy is able to gain experience and explore other areas within FMWR to which she would rarely have that exposure, working in only one facet of such a large organization. Brendy’s volunteerism embodies the spirit of one giving back to her community and exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corp invaluable service and support to the Area I Community. For this, we are grateful, and say thank you, Mrs. Brendy Santiago! Congratulations! You are in the “Community Volunteer Spotlight” for the month of January 2016!

“The Meaning Behind Our Area I Family & MWR Logo” Korea not only has a rich history, but geographically it is surrounded on the east and west with beautiful mountainous terrain, and to the south with open seas. The AREA I FAMILY & MWR logo was designed with this in mind. The three main features of the logo are the ‘rising sun,’ the ‘two magpies in flight’ and the Chinese symbol for the word ‘human.’ The rising sun expresses the beauty of Korea as well as hope for the future. The magpie is a common symbol of Korea, adopted as the national bird in 1964—two of these birds seen together is considered as a harbinger of good luck or joy. The symbol for ‘human’ or ‘people,’ not only speaks of the Korean population but also represents Korean, Japanese and Chinese culture. The human symbol also mirrors many of the large and small mountains found throughout the country, as well as traditional Korean residential roof tops. Because of the familiarity of the Chinese symbol for ‘human,’ so widely embraced in Korea, it was fitting to include it in the AREA I FAMILY & MWR logo, representing service to Soldiers, their families and others who live and work in the AREA I community.

Celebrating Korean Food

Tteok-guk Korean Food Recipe

떡국

Rice Cake Soup

Tteokguk is a traditional Korean soup dish that is eaten during the celebration of the Korean New Year. It is tradition to eat this soup on New Year's day because it’s believed to gain an additional year of life as well as bring in luck in the forthcoming year. The dish consists of thinly sliced rice cakes in a broth/soup and it’s usually garnished with thin julienned cooked eggs, some marinated meat (usually beef), and dried, crushed lavers. The broth is generally made by simmering the main protein (beef, chicken, pork, seafood) in a soy sauce-based seasoned stock. The stock is then strained to clarify the broth and long cylinder-shaped rice cakes (garaetteok) are thinly sliced diagonally and boiled in the broth. Garnish is added before serving and it may vary by region and personal taste. Varieties of tteokguk exists but a popular one is tuk mandooguk which is made by simply adding Korean dumplings.

Recipe Ingredients •20 sticks rice cake •1 lb beef (cut into thin strips and season) •4 oz ground beef •4 eggs •3 tbsp laver powder •1 green onion

•2 tbsp chopped green onion •2 tsp chopped garlic •3 tbsp soy sauce •1 tsp sesame salt •2 tsp sesame oil •Flour

Cooking Directions 1.Leave soft sticks of rice cake out overnight to harden and cut them diagonally into oval pieces when hard. 2.Season and shape the ground beef into meatballs ¾" in diameter. 3.Dip them into flour, then into beaten egg and fry. 4.Pan-fry beaten egg into a thin sheet and cut it into thin strips. 5.Fry the beef in a pot and boil it with 8 cups of water. 6.When the meat flavor permeates the broth, add the rice-cake slices and bring to a boil. 7.Season the soup with soy sauce and salt and add the diagonally cut green onion. 8.Place rice cake soup in a bowl and top it with the egg strips, meatballs and powdered laver.
