Hello Area I Community Members! Here we are in November and boy do we have a lot going on this month!! So let’s do a quick review of October one last time... Halloween Parties, Haunted Houses, Haunted Tunnels, Trunk or Treats and more. We had the Hot Chelle Rae Concert who rocked Stewart Field; oh, and by the way, I also have to send Kudos to the 2ID rock Jammie G. Hawkins band, Warrior Nation who seriously rocked Area Director, Family and MWR I!! We’ve started "Friday Night Lights" football games on Fridays and Saturdays at Schoonover Bowl, the Gateway Club went under renovation, as did Carey Fitness Center... and I could go on and on. So now let's talk about our November action---we feature the “Army Soldier Show” and the “Gyeonggi Province Dance Company” who will perform cultural dance and music. We are hosting the "Army Family Action Plan Conference," and since November is “Month of the Military Family,” FMWR is featuring many specials this month in honor of our Families, with programs and events either free and/or at discount prices. Are you ready for more tours? We have a "Hong Kong Tour," two "DMZ tours" and much more!
Commander, USAG Casey
Check out the “ITZ Magazine” for more details, and of course the rest of the story. One last peek into the future, so don't say anything... (the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremonies at Camp Red Cloud, Camp Stanley and Camp Casey in December!)
Eliott L. Bradley
Before you know it, November will have come and gone, and, we will be preparing for the Holidays in December with more to do, see and celebrate!
LTC Edward D. Eldridge
Acting Deputy Commander, USAG Casey
See you all out and about!!!

Story by SGT. Micus Ralls
Get the word out, gather the audience and prepare to be amazed, prepare to be entertained! After several months of waiting, it is that time of the year again. It is finally time, for The U.S. Army Soldier Show! The U.S. Army Soldier Show (TUSASS) is an international, live variety performance hosted by Armed Forces Entertainment, a division of the Army Installation Management Command Headquarters at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. This Broadway-styled production is essentially, a show produced by Soldiers, for the Soldier. Every year, a select group of individuals spend several months participating in countless rehearsals; honing and developing their skills, in preparation for that one night that they are called upon to perform for military service members. “That performance date, one of many they’ll perform throughout the year, is a culmination of endless days and hours of practice; a time that Soldiers finally get to showcase a truly unique, U.S.

Army show,” says SSG Jason Knight, who’s had several years of experience as a Technical Director for TUSASS. “I’ve spent some time with the crew, assisting with anything from lights, audio, trusses, stage setup and manpower-----and seeing firsthand the time and effort put into this production, I can tell you that the talent is first-rate, the audience will certainly be entertained,” he emphatically added. The U.S. Army Soldier Show features an all-star cast of gifted service members from various military installations around the world. These dedicated performers are selected for a particular skill whether it’s vocal or musical (stage performers) or for their technical skills (production crew), needed to run a professional quality show. Due to the rigorous training required, show members usually spend 10 months or more away from home at any given time. At the conclusion of every tour, each Soldier returns to their original military duties with a variety of new
Toepper, Outdoor Recreation Manager. “But the end result is a spectacular show, that’s definitely geared for Soldiers by Soldiers.” Mark your calendars on November 10 & 11, 2014 at 4 p.m., and venture out to Camp Casey to enjoy this modern-day production that originally started in 1984. Even though the shows motto and overall philosophy, “Entertainment for the Soldier, by the Soldier” started during the World War I era, its roots can be traced back further within the U.S. Army’s heritage to 1774, as apart of Civil War camp shows for Soldiers. The next generation of performers and technicians continue to carry that legacy, providing shows that spread the message further, by instilling Army Values and the Warrior Ethos. “This program has been around since the early 1980s, and now we have an upcoming show at Camp Casey, showcasing talented Soldiers who want a piece of that dream, to be on that stage and perform. And for those who are not performers, the opportunity to play an integral part of the show, as production technicians who help make the show possible,” says Knight. Many themes and programs that are essential to upholding the Army Values remain present within the entire performance, as such; commanders are encouraged to ask their units or families to attend, in support of their fellow Soldier. If you are unable to see the show on Camp Casey, you can catch another one hosted by Yongsan Army Base on November 13 and 14. For more information, call Area I Entertainment at 732-6751 or 732-7079.

skills that they can use during and after their military service. “Because TUSASS is a Soldier-oriented production, the crew is actively seeking Soldier performers and technicians throughout the year,” said Dan Cardwell, Area I Entertainment & Special Events Coordinator. “If you can sing, dance, rap, act or even play a musical instrument, the Soldier Show may give you the opportunity to perfect your skills. If you have experience with lighting, sound and other theatre/ stage areas of expertise, you, too, can also be a part of the Soldier Show,” he pointed out. Soldiers in Area I are in for a treat this November 9th and 10th at the Camp Casey, Hanson Field House. “TUSASS is a great opportunity for Soldiers to not only see a live action, modern day play but to also see the Soldiers perform,” says Mr. Chong, Sang Sop, Area I Entertainment Specialist. "What they are going to see is a lot of singing and dancing, a lot of choreography,” he adds. In support of the show, Area I Family & MWR, along with several Garrison elements dealing with security, setup, gate access, rooming, etc. have to comply with several requirements on the ground. “It’s a lot of hard work both from TUSASS production crew, and the show support elements in Area I,” said Steven

DMZ TOUR
A Visit to One of the Most Heavily Guarded Places on Earth
Story by Larissa Krenzer

USAG Red Cloud - Casey and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
Feature Article
For many military service members and their families, one of the main activities they look forward to while in Korea is visiting the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). If this is your intent while stationed here, Area I Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation (FMWR) provides an excellent educational, and fun opportunity to visit this much sought after tourist destination. As a feature writer for the In The Zone magazine, I was able to tag along and experience one of their recent DMZ tours. The man in charge for the day was Steven Toepper, an FMWR Outdoor Recreation Manager and his wife Kyong Toepper, both of whom have been leading DMZ tours for quite some time. “We try to keep it interesting for everyone, by bringing up facts and tidbits about the Korean War that we’ve learned over the years,” Mr. Toepper explains. “We encounter ‘pill boxes’ for example on the way to the DMZ, and I think 90 percent of our American participants don’t know what those signify, so I try to explain what they are, along with other bits and landmarks we encounter along the way,” he added. At 250 kilometers

long and 4 kilometers wide, the DMZ between North and South Korea acts as a buffer zone between the two countries. Both countries are still officially at war since 1950, due to an armistice that only led to a temporary cease-fire in 1953. As a result, the DMZ is one the most heavily defended borders in the world, occasionally

making the news with sporadic violence and border disputes throughout the years. The tour began with a bus ride to Camp Bonifas, were visitors where provided an opportunity to visit the Joint Security Area (JSA), one of the only official connections between North and South Korea and the place where we were given a brief overview and history of the Korean War by a U.S. military guide. From there, our group was led to the Freedom House to view Conference Row, one of the few places in Korea where the United Nations and North Korea meet face to face. There are a number of restrictions on photographs taken of the area due to security concerns, so pay attention to your guide and you’ll be fine. Other rules make sense, such as not antagonizing or making rude gestures at North Korean soldiers across the border since these actions can be used as propaganda against Americans. Visitors continued their tour of the conference rooms and were given an opportunity to cross into the North Korean side of the building, and allowed to take photographs of the area. At certain vantage points, you can clearly see North and South Korean guards, faceoff within a space measuring less than 300 feet apart. “My first time at the JSA was memorable, it was an eye opener, and we try to impart that same sense of awareness to everyone who comes here because it highlights the significance of the DMZ, and why our Soldiers are currently here in the peninsula.” Toepper pointed out, “our intent is to enable whoever takes

this tour to experience that.” Our military guide then took us to the 3rd checkpoint, an observation post on the South Korean side where you can see the propaganda village in North Korea. We also learned about the ‘Bridge of No Return’ where at one point, released war captives were given a choice of going across the bridge to their permanent country of choice; North or South, never to return. Soldiers and family members will be able to see the town of Tae Sung Dong, also known as Freedom Village, a South Korean town situated in close proximity next to the DMZ. Visitors then head to OP Dora where they can use onsite binoculars to see both ‘Kijong-Dong’ (propaganda village) in North Korea and ‘Tae Sung Dong’ in South Korea. “This whole experience was great!” said SSG Paul Kerlin of 210 Fires Brigade, 70th BSB, who has seen many other sites in Korea but says this particular tour was different. “Being able to stand in the conference room, or seeing the propaganda village firsthand; and just to be educated and learn more about why we are here, makes you really appreciate the mission,” he

convenient,” said Margaret Gonzalez, “The tour, the price and transportation make the whole experience much easier, we definitely will be taking more of the MWR tours available” she added with smile. Overall, this tour was a memorable and informative experience that is one of the highlights of our stay in Korea, a sentiment shared by others who joined us on this day. And as tired, but satisfied customers filled bus seats on the return back to base, Toepper said his mission for the day is complete. “We try our best and if they have a day where they have a good time learning about the history behind the DMZ and come back happy, then we know our job is done.” For more information about the next upcoming DMZ Tour, or any similar tours inside or outside Korea, contact your local Area I Community Activity Center.

added. The last stop of the tour was the 3rd Tunnel, discovered in 1978 by South Korean forces, which was estimated to enable 30,000 soldiers to move through per hour. Once the tunnel was found, the North insisted that it was the South who created it for purposes of invading North Korea. The tunnel has long been sealed, along with other tunnels dug by the North, but some speculate that there may still be some, yet undiscovered. As soon as you enter the 3rd Tunnel, you will be given a hard hat for safety purposes since the ceiling is quite low in some areas and can easily injure unprotected visitors. Those who wish to do so can either walk to the bottom of the tunnel or take a rail car, where they will continue down until they reach the end marked by a large steel wall at the military demarcation line. SGT Antonio Gonzalez of E Co. 2-9 IN and his wife Margaret enjoyed the experience. “The tunnel was exhausting, but it is worth the walk. It’s a must see for anyone stationed in Korea” he said. The tunnel is narrow in some places and visitors may have to crouch while moving through it. Walking will take approximately 10 minutes to reach the end, take note however, going down the tunnel is easy but returning back on an upslope might be a challenge for some. Additionally, throughout the day, the visitors are able to buy souvenirs, take pictures (where permitted), visit a museum, and take part in some traditional Korean cuisine during lunch. After a long day, the bus ride home is a welcome treat for all. “It’s very

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
SGT Christian E. Crawford 2nd Infantry Division Band
Since his arrival to the 2nd Infantry Division Band in Area I, Sergeant Christian E. Crawford has volunteered more than 82 hours, attending weekly rehearsals and leading the Chapel congregation in worship services as a member of the Chapel Praise Team. His talent as a gifted soloist and instrumentalist has enabled SGT Crawford to help promote spiritual fitness in our military and civilian community. SGT Crawford has consistently been volunteering his off-duty time for the past three years. While stationed at Wiesbaden, Germany, he dedicated over 52 hours teaching, mentoring and coaching at the local Child and Youth Services Center as a track and field coach. SGT Crawford’s dedication provided a positive, weekly activity for more than 20 US military children competing against American and host nation athletes. At Fort Leonard Wood, SGT Crawford continued coaching and mentoring, accumulating over 103 volunteer hours over two consecutive track and field

seasons; enabling more than 25 youth athletes, the ‘Golden Eagles’ to compete for the State of Missouri Track & Field Championship. Ultimately, his selfless service promoted fitness, and helped build character and discipline for a number of youth athletes. SGT Crawford is a valuable asset to every duty station he goes, with his time, commitment and dedication exemplifying the Army’s Volunteer Corps’ invaluable service. SGT Crawford continues his selfless service here in Area I, for which we are grateful, and say ‘Thank You and Congratulations’ for being in our Community Volunteer Spotlight for the month of November 2014.

ARMY FAMILY ACTION PLAN ( AFAP ) CONFERENCE @ Casey Community Activity Center
November 19-20, 2014 Got an Issue? The AFAP Conference provides an opportunity to voice your concerns related to the Area I Community’s Quality of Life for Soldier’s, Family Members, Retirees, and DA Civilians. Voicing your concerns, experiences, and sharing your ideas on how to improve processes and systems may affect changes not just here at the local level, but also at Higher Headquarters and the U.S. Army as a whole. But it all starts with YOU, and we need your help. This year’s AFAP conference will require Facilitators, Recorders, Transcribers, and Issue Support, just to name a few volunteer positions. Delegates are also needed, for the critical role of coordinating group sets in reviewing and prioritizing issues which are then presented to the Garrison Commander and Area I Leaders during the Out Brief Session of the conference. Delegates are made up of Active Duty, Officer and Enlisted, Family Members, Retirees and DA Civilians from the Area I community; our recruitment efforts are ongoing, please call us for more information. Look for FY15 Army Family Action Plan Boxes throughout Area I. Help us identify and resolve issues and concerns that impact our Army Families.

WHY
APPRECIATE MILITARY FAMILIES? American Forces Press Service | by Elaine Sanchez In honor of Military Appreciation Month, I created a Top 10 list of the qualities I most appreciate about military families. Ten qualities hardly seem enough to encompass the amazing service and sacrifice of our nation’s military families, but I figured it’s a start. What I most appreciate about military families: 10. Their Sense of Humor. I think this is a prerequisite for military families -- kind of an "If you don’t laugh, you cry," complex, particularly when it comes to deployments. For instance, my friend Vivian wrote a blog post for Family Matters last year about a piece of pizza. Her Navy husband had just deployed, and the pizza was the only remnant of the family’s last meal together before he left. "So there it sits, mocking me while growing another skin in our fridge," she wrote of that pizza, "a smelly, and somewhat odd, reminder that the man of the house, an integral piece of our family, is gone again." Funny, and….sad. 9. They’re Passionate – About Everything. They give their all, whether it’s volunteering in their communities, with their family readiness groups or in their kids’ schools. What’s even more impressive is they do so while balancing careers, home life, kids and education. 8. They’re Strong, Even Under Extraordinary Circumstances. Due to state-of-the-art technology and medicine, the survivability of this war is unmatched by any other, and service members are returning home alive despite devastating injuries. And when they do, their families are there to embrace them. In some cases, they give up homes and careers to care for their military loved one full-time. That’s strength. 7. They’re Always Willing to Lend Each Other A Hand. I visited an Army post about a year ago to interview military kids and met a teenager whose parents were both deployed in Iraq. He and his two siblings were
56

6. They’re Resilient. A decade of war, frequent deployments, moves, career and school changes. Need I say more? 5. Military Spouses. From the moment they say "I do" to a military member, they begin a life of service every bit as valuable as their spouse’s. They give up careers to follow their military loved one around the world, hold down the home front during deployments, and offer their unfailing love and support. It’s a lot to ask of anyone, and they voluntarily shoulder this burden. 4. Military Kids. They’re just amazing. They change schools, on average, six to eight times over the course of their parent’s military career. They deal with long separations from loved ones – who aren’t headed out for a business trip, but for a year in a combat zone. Despite everything that’s thrown at them, they are strong, brave and adaptable. I met a high school senior a while back who told me he was OK with his dad missing his graduation, prom and a host of other events. He knew the reason why -- his dad’s desire to serve his nation -- and that was enough. 3. Other Family Members. People often forget about the extended family members who serve too. The grandparents who open their homes to grandkids during deployments, the sisters and brothers who call and send care packages, a host of uncles, aunts and cousins offering their unwavering support. I spoke to a woman who took in her two grandchildren during her Air Force daughter’s deployment. She was nervous at first – it had been years since kids lived in her home full-time -- but then gained a new bond with her grandchildren. And she’d do it again in a heartbeat, she told me. 2. Their Service and Sacrifice. They, too, serve this nation. They weather holidays, birthdays and major milestones without their military loved one. In the worst cases, they must deal with their loved one’s ultimate sacrifice. First Lady Michelle Obama expressed her gratitude for military families at an event to honor military kids last spring: "When we talk about service to our country, when we talk about all that sacrifice for a cause, when we talk about
patriotism and courage and resilience, we’re not just talking about our troops and our veterans," Obama said, "we’re talking about our military families, as well." 1. They Stand Behind Their Service Member. I know a military mom whose children – all six – had either joined the military or were about to. All had joined while the nation is at war. While she was concerned, rather than deter them from their choice, she chose to support them. She told me it was an easy decision. "I always tell [my children], ‘This is your time in history. You are where the action is and you’re fighting for us, for your country and for the lifestyle we all enjoy." I hope everyone takes a moment to thank a military family this month, and year-round. Or, even better, offer to give them a hand, whether it’s with child care, cooking a meal or helping to mow a lawn. As the first lady often says at her Joining Forces events, "Everyone can do something."
Significance of Military Family Appreciation Month This annual proclamation marks the beginning of a month-long celebration of the Military Family in which the Department of Defense and the nation will honor the commitment and sacrifices made by the families of the nation's service members. Throughout the month of November, military families serving around the world are honored through a variety of observances and recognized for their commitment and the many contributions they make every day in support of the military and our nation. Efforts to recognize the sacrifices of the military family by Active, Guard, and Reserve leaders are being joined and supported by DoD organizations to include the Army Air Force Exchange Service, Defense Commissary Agency, Family & MWR organizations and others. Contact your local FMWR or Family Services offices to learn more about events scheduled in your area. IN THE ZONE

staying with his parents’ friends, who had three kids of their own. I was amazed by the couple’s selflessness at the time, but since have heard of so many other examples that I’ve realized this caring and support is simply another aspect of the military family culture.
