Local judge Gerald A. Williams explains negligence. 20 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || APRIL 2018
“I DIDN’T intend to do that. It was an accident.” What is one thing both of those statements have in common? Neither is a defense to negligence. Negligence is the failure to act as a reasonable person would have in the same or similar circumstances. Intent generally has nothing to do with negligence. Instead, the focus is on whether the conduct was reasonable. If you are serving on a jury in a negligence case in Arizona, you’ll likely receive the following jury instruction: “Negligence is the failure to use reasonable care. Negligence may consist of action or inaction. Negligence is the failure to act as a reasonably careful person would act under the circumstances.” For example, nobody plans on being in

Spring Crafts THESE EASY PROJECTS WILL PUT A SMILE ON YOUR KIDS’ FACES. By Shannon Fisher Photos by Shannon Fisher Photography

Egg Wreath
Happy April! To celebrate spring, we made an easy egg wreath with a floral wreath that we wrapped in teal ribbon. Once wrapped, we hot glued the end of the ribbon to make sure it was secure. We then used pushpins to attach hanging Styrofoam glitter eggs along the wreath. You can use any items of your choice to hot glue on as well. Some other ideas are jellybeans, flowers, or any other ornaments, beads, etc., that catch your eye or you have at home. We sourced all these supplies from the dollar store, so this is a fun and inexpensive craft to create. Enjoy your festive wreath for Easter or spring.
Jellybean “Plants”
Another fun idea is to plant jellybeans. This can be done to celebrate Easter, spring, or April Fool’s Day. Take a handful of jellybeans and sprinkle them on your grass area of choice with your young children. Make sure the jellybeans are away from pets that may eat them. Next, wait until the next day to see if the jellybeans grew into lollipops. Ours “grew” overnight thanks to a stealthy visit from mom. I replaced the jellybeans with lollipops. This can be a great surprise for Easter morning or just for fun any day. They were easy to pick from the ground and the kids loved finding them.
Paper Plate Bunny Holder
Another easy craft is a paper plate bunny holder. You take a plain white paper plate and fold it in half. We used cotton balls for the tail by pulling one end of the plate apart a bit and gluing the cotton in the crack. You could also staple the cotton on. We made ears from a separate plate as well by drawing a simple ear shape and cutting them out. After they were cut out, we colored the middle of one ear with a pink marker. You can add the eyes, nose, and whiskers with crayon or marker, or glue some on. Staple the top of the plate after you stuff it with treats or a note to the recipient of your bunny.

Orange chicken
Bamboo Café Local Chinese restaurant serves up modern interpretations of classic dishes. BY ANDREW LEACH ONE OF MY favorite things in life is finding hidden restaurant gems in unlikely spots. Bamboo Café is one such place. Tucked away in the corner of a grocery store strip mall, hidden by a large fast food chain, you’ll find some of the best orange chicken in the Valley—seriously. Focusing on fresh ingredients, the restaurant’s modern interpretations of classic dishes is, no doubt, why they have a bustling dine-in and takeout crowd. When we arrived, we were shown to a nice table in the contemporary dining room and given time to review the extensive menu over an ornate pot of hot tea ($1.50). They have a very well organized and eclectic Asian menu that focuses on many different dishes in the Mandarin style. As we sat and reviewed the menu, I was taken by the creative Chang Ho window style table design. We decided to start our meal with a few appetizers for our table to share. The first one we ordered was the cha shao bao ($3). The order comes with two steamed buns filled with delicious barbeque pork. They’re denser than you might expect and about the size of a jelly donut. The flavors meld together pleasantly when you get to the sweet pork center. The Asian pot stickers ($7) are also a winner. These are served fried, but you can also request them to be steamed in-
stead. There are eight to an order, so there’s plenty for sharing around the table. The wonton wrapper is filled with a mixture of pork and vegetables and formed into a small dumpling. They’re served with a ginger and soy dipping sauce. The fried version has a nice crisp exterior texture that pairs well with the sweet dipping sauce. Also enjoyable, the crab puffs ($4.50). Filled with crab meat, green onion, and cream cheese, there are eight to an order. Lightly deep fried and served on a plate with a sweet and sour dipping sauce, they’re a guilty pleasure. Moving on to the entrées, we selected the sesame chicken dinner combo ($7.50, $8.50 with a side dish upgrade). The serving size is tremendous and is more than enough for two people to share. The meal comes with white rice, an egg roll, and a crab puff. For a dollar extra, you can upgrade the white rice to brown rice, fried rice, or noodles. On this occasion, we decided on noodles to accompany the sesame chicken. The chicken is lightly breaded and fried with sesame sauce spooned over the top. If you’re anticipating the sweet and sticky sesame chicken you find at other places, this is not that. Rather, the sesame flavor is not as strong as some people might expect. You can’t go wrong with the orange
chicken dinner combo with fried rice ($8.75). The flavor is phenomenal and after one bite you’ll understand why the orange chicken is one of Bamboo Café’s most ordered dishes. The chicken and the sauce are perfection. We rounded out the evening with the kung pao tofu ($8.50). This dish comes with a side of white rice and is full of flavor. If you think you don’t like tofu, this dish will change your mind. Featuring cubes of tofu that are deep-fried and then sautéed with peanuts, water chestnuts, green bell peppers, and onions mixed together in a spicy kung pao sauce, it’s wonderfully flavorful. But, when I say the sauce is spicy, I mean SPICY! I was very thankful to have an icecold glass of water nearby while eating this dish. If you’re a fan of spicier dishes and eat them routinely, then this may not be spicy to you, but to me it was. But I would order it again, with an extra glass of water nearby. It was exciting to see that this vegetarian dish was not an after thought, and was given the same care that other dishes receive. While Bamboo Café’s exposure to the main street may be limited, you’ll be happy you took the time to find it. The food is excellent and no matter what you order, there’s sure to be enough to take home for tasty leftovers the next day.

Phantom Facial A bright new Hollywood beauty trend. By Elizabeth Hausman
THIS NEW FACIAL beauty trend features a futuristic appearing LED-light therapy facemask. You might think this is something straight off the set of a new Star Wars movie but, although the use of the “phantom mask” might be relatively new, the technology is not. Red light therapy has been around for quite some time and
42 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || APRIL 2018
has been proven to provide therapeutic results. This technology was first developed by NASA in the 1990s to help grow plants in space. It was purely by accident that scientists discovered that when astronaut’s wounds were exposed to the red LED lights, their wounds healed faster. Accidental discoveries like this are actually quite common in the field of aesthetics. Many
Red Lights Target: • Wrinkle reduction • Collagen stimulation • Skin tightening • Pigmentation • Promotes healing • Decreases downtime associated with invasive procedures such at micro-needling • Reduces inflammation • Increased blood circulation • Rejuvenates skin
cosmetic treatments are discovered by accident. One significant example of this is the cosmetic application of Botox. In 1987, two Vancouver doctors, Jean and Alastair Carruthers, accidentally discovered cosmetic properties in a medication normally used by ophthalmologists. Dr. Jean Carruthers was an eye doctor who treated blepharospasm, an uncontrollable blinking and spasming of the eye and surrounding area. Blepharospasm was treated with a dilute solution of botulinum toxin that, when injected into the skin, relaxed the spasming muscles. One day, one of Jean’s patients became upset with her when she wouldn’t inject the forehead (as she had done in the past), when questioned why the patient was upset, the patient responded, “Because when you inject my forehead, my wrinkles go away.” This simple statement revolutionized what we now call “The Non-Surgical Aesthetic Industry” and this accidental discovery changed the face of beauty. If LED light technology is not new, then why is this therapy getting so much attention now? It all started with Jessica Alba posting a selfie wearing one of these futuristic “phantom masks” on Instagram. Since that posting, other celebrities
are following suit including Kourtney Kardashian, Kate Hudson, and Katy Perry. As we all know, when something catches the attention of Hollywood celebrities, the whole world becomes interested too. Everyone wants to know what the newest celebrity beauty secret is. Well, it seems like the phantom facial may be just that. The LED-light therapy mask used during the phantom facial utilizes multiple wavelengths and colors to target a variety of skin conditions including skin laxity, age spots, sun damage, acne, and poor circulation. The LED lights stimulate something called fibroblasts, which produce collagen. At the same time, they slow down the production of enzymes that break down collagen that make skin lose its elasticity. LED lights also speed up cellular turnover, which causes the skin to regenerate and heal faster, thus creating a fresher appearing complexion. Research has shown that skin cells that are exposed to LED lights regenerate 150 to 200 percent faster than those not stimulated by LED-light therapy. A series of four to six treatments is required for optimal results or if you’re looking for an instant pick-me-up or glow for a special occasion, the phantom facial may be just the treatment option for you.
Blue Lights Target: • Treats mild to moderate acne • Cystic acne therapy • Kills bacteria (Especially the kind that causes acne breakouts) • Stimulated skin cell repair • Helps regulate the natural production of oil in the skin
The Phantom Facial Treatment Includes • Deep Cleanse • Exfoliation • Extractions • Collagen Boosting Hydrogel Treatment Mask • LED-Light Therapy Mask Session Total treatment time is approximately one hour.
