AS TECHNOLOGY advances, in-person summer school classes and makeup credit classes seem to be a thing of the past. Online schooling is taking over in-person classes for districts across the world and making it easier than ever to accomplish more in less time. Deer Valley Unified School District is no exception to this with their elaborate online system that allows students to fit a year’s worth of classes into just six short weeks over the summer. When deciding which electives I wanted to take for the next year, there were many things that interested me and physical education was not one of them. I met with my guidance counselor and talked about the online route for health and fitness center as an alternative to the yearlong in-person class. Doing this would open up my schedule to a third elective, which would allow me to do more of what I’m interested in. Also, Arizona summers can be brutally hot, so I decided to enroll for the six-week online course and a few friends did as well. I had the honor of interviewing Kayla Howard, one of the many DVUSD online summer students. Kayla, an incoming freshman at Sandra Day O' Connor High School as well, agreed it’s more efficient to get the class done in a shorter time frame while still learning all, if not more of the health-related content. She liked that she could take two classes in only six weeks and says she used the extra space

in her schedule for a dance elective. She says with in-person classes, you do more group projects to learn off each other, but with online classes you can still talk in the group and comment on other people’s work and posts. Kayla felt online course work was challenging, but worth it. I agree the course work was difficult to complete in the short time frame, but it proved to be worth it to have this credit completed before my freshman year. I feel that online differs from in-person classes because it puts more accountability on the student. It’s up to the student to make sure they complete all of the assignments before the deadline. A question I asked myself before signing up for online physical education was how it would work not being with a teacher in person. To complete the classes, you fill out performance logs, take accountability photos and videos, and complete various assignments that are posted online. For a lot of the assignments, the students post on a team talk board and we can comment on each other’s work. This gives you peer feedback and interaction. Of course health and fitness center are not the only classes DVUSD online has to offer. They offer courses such as English, math, science, foreign language, electives, and any other courses students may need to take for credit recovery. It allows students of any age to get ahead or back on track if needed with their peers. These online options allow students to get more credits to graduate early or have half days in their final years of high school. In similar scenarios around the Valley, development has often “snowballed” once the first business opened its doors. BY THE END of the evening on Aug. 28, 2018, everyone will know which candidate will be serving as the constable for the North Valley Justice Court Precinct for the next four years. Yes, voters in the North Valley have a competitive constable race. This happens, well, almost never. So what does a constable do? Unless you have been a domestic abuse victim and needed someone to serve an order of protection on your behalf, you may not know what a constable does. In fact, if you ask most people what a constable is, they will probably tell you something about an unarmed British police officer. In Arizona, constables are significantly different. In addition to performing a judicial security function, constables serve orders of protection and injunctions against harassment. Orders of protection are served on the defendant at no cost to the victim. Constables also locate criminal suspects and serve them with a summons that directs that person to appear before a justice of the peace.
Constables further enforce the law by executing writs of restitution in landlord tenant cases. Evicting people from their residence is usually an unpleasant duty, but doing so often serves to protect the public, especially when it has been discovered that a neighborhood rental property has been operating a meth lab. Constables also enforce court orders to seize property to satisfy judgments. Arizona constables have had a colorful history. Wyatt Earp’s brother, Virgil Earp, served as a constable in Prescott. Gila County Constable Miles Wood arrested Billy the Kid in 1876. Wesley Bolin was Arizona’s secretary of state for nearly 30 years; but he began his political career in 1938 as a constable in west Phoenix. Standards for modern constables are governed in part by the Constable Eth-
ics, Standards, and Training Board. It sets the professional standards for constables throughout Arizona, ensures that every constable is meeting their continuing education requirements, and provides supplemental funding to counties for constable training and equipment. The board has a dual purpose of: (1) accepting, investigating, and resolving complaints against constables, and (2) reviewing and awarding grants from funds collected from writ fees collected in accordance with A.R.S. § 11-445. One justice of the peace and one constable are elected from each justice court precinct for a four-year term. (I’m unopposed.) Credential Stuffing Stolen usernames and passwords pose a threat. By Linda Vitale
NEVER USE the same password to log into your various online accounts, including the less significant ones. If you do, you may be a victim of what cyber criminals refer to as credential stuffing. There were 1,579 data breaches in 2017. Many of those data breaches exposed the email addresses and passwords of millions of users. Cyber criminals use what is known as credential stuffing to try and break into as many other online accounts as they can, using those leaked email credentials from a data breach. Here’s how it’s done. Crooks use a software program that automatically injects stolen username and password pairs into the login pages of websites. Once the attacker gets a successful match, they’ve gained access to the user’s account. The attacker can then hijack the account for their own evil purposes. The website host has no way of knowing the difference between you and the attacker, who logged into the site using your stolen credentials. Most internet users don’t want to be bothered with having to

keep track of different passwords on different accounts. Realize that you’re putting yourself at great risk if the password for your bank account is the same one you use for your Facebook or Amazon account. This password reuse problem is how criminals easily make you a victim of ID theft. Your only protection is to use a different unique password for each of your online logins. It’s the only way you can protect yourself from credential stuffing. You must also make your passwords hard to crack. Don’t use obvious things like your mother’s maiden name, your birthdate, etc. Try not to use words in the dictionary. Instead, use a phrase or the first letters of a sentence or a phrase that you made up. Also, be sure to always use a mix of symbols, numbers, and upper and lowercase letters. ROCK Norterra couple finds success selling stone remnants.

E
ight years ago, Norterra couple Danny and Marie Pantelic found themselves at a crossroads. At the time, Marie was a music therapist working with autistic children, while Danny was a machinist building parts for Honeywell. When the economy turned and a freeze was put on all his orders, they turned to the internet to liquidate Danny’s equipment. In the process, the entrepreneurial duo stumbled upon an untapped market buying and selling stone remnants and have since turned it into a thriving Deer Valley business called The Yard. “With the downturn in the economy there was a great need for used equipment and businesses were being cautious, saving a dime and buying used,” explains Marie. Finding no trouble liquidating his own machines, Danny started going to auctions and buying equipment and reselling it for a profit. One afternoon he was at a stone fabrication facility auction to bid on a forklift when he saw what he assumed was a lot for 10 small remnants of stone. Thinking he could make a table out of the pieces, he bid $800. Unbeknownst to him, Danny’s winning bid was for the entire stock of the defunct stone yard’s inventory including 1,500 remnants and full granite slabs. “We didn’t know stone at all. It took us three weeks and $10,000 to move it all because it’s so heavy and you need special equipment to move it,” says Marie. They relocated it to her father-in-law’s backyard, an acre or so in Phoenix where they were storing the machinery they were buying and selling. “What are we going to do with all this granite,” Marie thought. They turned to Craigslist, listing the remnants for $5 a square foot. “The next day we had a line of people out the door.”

Without any previous stone knowledge, the couple dove into the industry and learned all they could. “At the time, it was difficult for banks that had seized the assets of bankrupt companies to get rid of things like granite because it costs so much to move and store. All of these companies and banks didn’t know what to do with it, so we became known as a liquidation company. We were getting calls from banks in California and Texas saying, ‘We hear you guys buy remnants; we’ve got a yard full of remnants.’” By this time, the couple had eased out of the machine market and was focused solely on stone. They were doing a bustling business with forklifts running constantly and a steady stream of customers coming and going until the city came knocking and said operations had to cease because the property wasn’t zoned commercial. The couple, realizing they had a viable business on their hands, secured a commercial property four miles south of their Norterra home in the Deer Valley Airpark and officially opened up The Yard in the space six years ago. When auction liquidations became less frequent, the couple turned to other avenues to secure remnants, like fabricators. “Let’s say you want to do a bathroom remodel and just want to do a bathroom. You pick out a slab. What most homeowners don’t know is you own the whole slab, but you only needed one fourth. Now the fabricator has three fourths of your slab in his bone yard and unless, you, the customer, wants to do another project with that remnant, it ends up in the fabricator’s yard.” According to Marie, fabricators often have to pay large sums to have the heavy, unused remnants carted off their lots. with many pieces ending up in the landfill. “When the auction stream ran out, we said, ‘hey, let’s go to these fabricators and buy it instead of them paying to pay to cart it away,’” says Marie. When fabricators sell the unused pieces to the Pantelics, the remnants are diverted from landfills and become an affordable option for homeowners doing small projects like bathrooms, fireplaces, and furniture. With about 2,500 pieces of stone on their lot, there’s a lot to select from including full slabs that the Pantelics source directly from international quarries. “We’re not interested in buying third-party slabs,” says Marie. Instead, Danny flew to Brazil and India to build relationships with quarry owners. “We import directly from Brazil and India in our own containers so that we can offer the most incredible pricing on full slabs and remnants.” “Our main market is the homeowner,” says Marie. “We try to educate the customer and nurture them through the process.” She points out that they explain things like why you can’t put quartz in a backyard barbeque and the pros and cons of putting marble in a kitchen.

palate. If you’re a fan of spicy dishes, it may not be as hot to you, but I found it pretty intense. Overall, the dish was very good and the vegetables were cooked perfectly, as was the chicken. We also tried the seafood pho special ($10.50). Pho is a brothbased soup with rice noodles, various herbs, and protein. You can select a number of different protein options, including fried tofu. As the name suggests, the protein in this dish is seafood. Served in a large bowl, it comes with extra herbs and rice noodles to add to the dish, if desired. The heat level in this dish is noticeably lower than that in the Vietnamese curry. Moving away from soup, we tried the combo beef noodle bowl ($11). This has a base of cooked rice noodles that are topped with shredded lettuce, carrots, cucumber, and bean sprouts. You can choose from a list of different proteins to add. It’s then finished off with a scoop of peanuts for added flavor and texture. The combo meal version, which we ordered, comes with two small egg rolls. While the other dishes we’d sampled thus far had been all mixed together in a broth or soup, this dish is packed tightly with ingredients, so you might need to eat your way through some of the toppings to get to the noodles. We couldn’t leave without trying the tangerine chicken ($9). It’s very similar to the orange chicken dishes that you may have experienced at other establishments, but only in concept. The sauce is much lighter in this version and has a stronger natural orange flavor, as opposed to the syrupy version you’re likely to find at other places. Here, the chicken pieces are lightly breaded, fried, and then sautéed with onions and a caramelized tangerine sauce. It’s served with steamed broccoli and white rice and a small lettuce salad with tangerine seg-
ments. This is a wise dish to order if you’re unfamiliar with Vietnamese cuisine, as it resembles a more mainstream Chinese dish. If you’re a non-adventurous eater, the grilled chicken rice plate ($9) is for you. A plate of rice with grilled chicken is exactly what you’ll receive. The chicken is cooked with a nice char but leans toward the more bland side, since it’s only seasoned with salt and pepper. There is the option for a side dish of soy sauce or fish sauce. I would recommend adding a little bit of flavor, unless simple grilled chicken is what you’re looking for. The final entrée of the evening was the stir-fry beef with curry ($10.50). Featuring thinly sliced beef that is sautéed in a yellow curry sauce with a bunch of delicious vegetables, there’s a mix of mushrooms, onions, carrots, celery, bell peppers, and broccoli. It’s garnished with fresh herbs and served with a scoop of white rice. This dish had some heat to it like the other curry dish, but again heat level on a palate is very subjective. This is a filling dish and full of fresh vegetables. While this spot has quite a few tables for in-restaurant dining, I noticed that Pho Saigon Pearl also seems to do a thriving take-out business. This spot is for real and I’m not just being Pho-ny.

A Nose Job Without Surgery? Non-surgical rhinoplasty offers a quick why to get a well-balanced nose. By Dr. Kelly Collins

THE IMPORTANCE of a well-balanced nose cannot be overemphasized. As one of the most prominent features of the face, the nose is essential for facial harmony and a positive self-image. Facial dermal fillers are an excellent choice for patients looking for a non-surgical option to aesthetic nasal correction. Fillers such as Juvederm, Voluma, and Vollure can be used to contour the nose and are an excellent option for patients looking for correction without having to undergo surgery. Some possible applications include: building the bridge of the nose, refining the results of a previous nasal surgery, correcting asymmetry and concavities, enhancing the tip of the nose, and smoothing or straightening the nasal hump. Here is one of many experiences I’ve had in performing a nonsurgical rhinoplasty procedure with the use of dermal fillers: Recently I had the pleasure of meeting with a patient who was moving to Los Angeles to break into acting. She had always been self-conscious about her nose. She complained of a deviated septum and she told me of a desire to have a sleek streamlined look, which would help her be more photogenic. The consultation moved to discussing the advantages of her having a non-surgical rhinoplasty, which I explained is a non-invasive procedure that can have profound effects on filling in volume loss and deficits of the nose. It also creates the illusion that the nose is actually smaller. After our consultation, she felt completely lined up to move ahead with a non-surgical rhinoplasty. The patient returned a couple of days later, after having stopped her blood-thinning supplements, like fish oil to minimize bruising. This patient was extremely excited that she could finally have the look she always longed for without the expense and downtime of surgery. I proceeded to apply numbing cream to her lovely nose after taking some before photos. After about 15 minutes of numbing, we began the 20-minute procedure using a hyaluronic-acid based filler called Juvederm Ultra Plus XC. Non-surgical rhinoplasties are an art, which is why I feel so passionate about them. There’s a lot of creativity involved and every nose is different. Once the filler was strategically placed for this gal’s nose, though, the transformation became stunning. I handed my patient the mirror so she could admire her

new nose. She began crying happy tears. Her entire life she had wanted this result to be her reflection in the mirror. And, for a reasonable cost and a few minutes, she could have it! WOW!
