WHEN ENROLLING for classes as a freshman just entering high school, I was overwhelmed with the amount of amazing clubs and programs that the Deer Valley Unified School District has to offer. With my mom being a former teacher, I had a little more insight as to the different programs offered and what I would be able to gain from them. When talking to my peers, I realized that not everyone knows about these programs, so they may miss out on opportunities to expand their knowledge in a field that interests them. With that in mind, my hope for this monthly column is to inform people in the community of different programs that are available for students in 85085 that can enhance their educations as well as their interests in school. For instance, Akshay, Nithin, and Vivek Ravi are triplets who recently graduated from Mountain Ridge High School. They’ve found great success in business-based clubs such as Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and DECA, but gained so much more than marketing and engineering skills than they originally anticipated. These programs allowed the brothers to gain state and world titles. They partnered on a DECA international business plan and were awarded first in state as well as top 20 in the international competition for DECA. They also took first place for FBLA business ethics among other leadership
awards. Nithin also got first on both the organizational leadership and economics test as well as the business ethics test in FBLA. When they moved to the area as sophomores, they showed interest in the CTE marketing program offered at Mountain Ridge. From there, they joined DECA for the engineering aspects of the program and to enhance what they were learning about marketing in the classroom. They came out of the program with public speaking skills, more confidence in pursuing business, and the “soft skills” they did not expect to gain from the program. They feel that these skills aren’t typically learned in the classroom so being in FBLA and DECA gave them additional tools that they can use in any aspect of life, not just in business and marketing. Being in programs like these also allow students to connect with other students in the program statewide. Career and technical student organizations, or CTSOs, send students to inter-school conferences to talk about the skills they’ve developed in the programs their school offers. Here, they can expand their knowledge and improve upon “soft skills” that they’ll use throughout life. These brothers learned how to write business plans, build confidence, and worked hand in hand with interns in graphic design and marketing while
organizing their own conference. All in all, you don't have to necessarily be interested in business when you initially join DECA, FBLA, or any of the CTE programs offered at these schools. They are a way to discover new career pathways and even if you don't end up following them, many can benefit from the networking skills learned. These new skills you develop help build confidence that can be used throughout high school and beyond.
JADYN FISHER Jadyn is a freshman at Sandra Day O' Connor High School. She is an active part of her school and community and looks forward to bringing awareness to community education programs.

Independence Day Local Judge Gerald A. Williams on an especially historic July 4. WHETHER YOU BELIEVE in one God, many gods, or no gods, it’s hard to dismiss as a mere coincidence the simultaneous death of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams on the 50th Anniversary of our nation’s Declaration of Independence. Both died within hours of each other on July 4, 1826. Both had directly challenged the British Empire. Both patriots had been president. They became bitter enemies; but in retirement, became close friends. Presidential elections were different in many ways back then than they are now. Perhaps most significantly, while the individual who received the most votes in the Electoral College became president, the person who finished second became vice president. While this may originally have seemed like a good idea, try to imagine our current federal government with a President Donald Trump and a Vice President Hillary Clinton. The

BETTER BLEND
David Anderson is perfecting the art of coffee roasting in the North Valley. A mix of art, science, and an attempt to accentuate and balance these elements is how David Anderson, the owner of the Roastery of Cave Creek, describes roasting coffee. A native of Kansas, Anderson moved to Cave Creek in 1997, where he was drawn to the thrilling and bountiful beauty of the Tonto National Forest. Not only does he admire the area, but Anderson views Cave Creek as a town featuring its own range of characters.

Anderson is proud to be one of few to venture into the Valley’s coffee-roasting community. For over 20 years, Anderson has been perfecting his craft that he shares with the community, accompanied by the support of his wife, Allison. Anderson started his business with endless hours of trying “different varietals and blends to develop [his] craft.” He’s dedicated to ensuring that the roasting techniques he brings to the table are the best
possible. Anderson describes his roasting techniques as those that “bring forward the nuances and optimum flavor of each coffee,” some of which he has acquired and developed from numerous trips to South and Central America, where he’s searched for the finest coffee available. In layman’s terms, the coffee roaster itself is a large convection oven that uses flames and air to roast the coffee. Anderson has the ability to roast 5,000 pounds per day, and roasting the coffee usually takes 12 to 14 minutes, depending on the type, amount, and desired outcome. In regards to recent developments to the Roastery, Anderson recently partnered with a custom coffee roaster from Emmerich, Germany, which provides coffee fine-tuned to the desires and quality-requirements of Anderson. The Roastery has developed alongside the Valley’s evolving culinary scene over the past five years. Anderson values the individuality of other chefs who can bring their own ideas to the table. For 20 years, Anderson has had the opportunity to partner with numerous chefs such as Chris Bianco, Mark Tarbell, Chrysa Robertson,

Justin Beckett, Charleen Badman, Jeremy Pacheco, Josh Hebert, Michael O’Dowd, Matt and Ernie Poole, and many more. Anderson’s equally expressive and creative outlets include welding and photography. He describes photography as something that “seems to be a good ‘old man’ hobby.” He enjoys shooting landscapes, some of which are featured in the Roastery. Alongside his photographs are some of his own creations in the structure and design of the Roastery. “My welding enabled me to create an industrial feel and functionality to the roastery,” he says. “Steel evokes a feeling of strength and longevity and my creations will be around long after I am gone.” In the past, Anderson has used methods of transportation as both a hobby and as an innovative way to deliver coffee. One of his preferred methods? Flight. Although he’s currently planeless, Anderson has previously used “coffee deliveries to the Grand Canyon and cities around Arizona as an excuse to fly.” As it turns out, the Tonto National Forest also contains a few airstrips that Anderson cites as ideal camping spots. Another one of his adventurous endeavors includes motorcycle riding, of which he currently owns four. He travels through the United States with his brother, enjoying the scenery and basking in the countryside views. Anderson is a man determined to create the best coffee and acquire the most seamless flavor, even if it means Anderson's welding skills have enabled him to create an industrial feel and traveling around the world to do so. One Nation…
Pastor David Bowen offers his opinion about the importance of the Pledge of Allegiance. I RECENTLY ATTENDED a preschool graduation. The ceremony opened up with one of the preschool children leading the assembly in the Pledge of Allegiance. The audience in unison looked toward the flag and recited the words, which were originally composed by Captain George Thatcher Balch, a Union Army Officer during the Civil War and later a teacher of patriotism in New York City schools. In 1892, for the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America, the pledge was largely devised by Francis Bellamy and formally adopted by Congress as the pledge in 1942. The purpose of the Pledge of Allegiance is to express loyalty to this great country, which has long been a desired destination for many immigrants. The Pledge of Allegiance was a tool in helping immigrants, especially their children, understand the honor and privilege of being an American citizen. Sessions of Congress open with the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance, so do most local and state government meetings, such as city council meetings. And, until a lawsuit in West Virginia, most school days began with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Students would begin each school day by standing up, facing the flag, placing their hands over their hearts, and publicly reciting words of gratitude and loyalty. Times have changed. This past April, a city council member in Peekskill, New York, refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of a public meeting. For a while now, there have been two words in the pledge that have caused controversy. In1954, the words “under God” were added to the pledge and for several decades those words seemed to offend no one. However, as times changed, people began to become offended to have the word “God” in a public ceremony. The 31-word Pledge of Allegiance was written so it could be recited in 15 seconds. As a child, I remember Astronaut David Scott saluting the U.S. flag while standing on the moon. This happened on the 1971 Apollo 15 moonwalk. As a father, and someone who wishes to have his children grow up being thankful for living in this amazing country, I want my children to appreciate the values and freedoms they could easily take for granted. I want them to understand that being able to live the lifestyle we do and have the freedoms we have are not flukes. We can only enjoy these privileges because of the blood, sweat, and tears of those who have come before us. Being an American is something that deserves respect. The American flag, the men and women who defend our country, and our flag all deserve to be hon-
ored, even if it’s just with a simple 31-word, 15-second pledge. However, times have once again changed. Now the two words that seem to be most upsetting to many people are not “under God” but the words “one nation.” In my opinion, we are no longer one nation; we are no longer a united nation. We have become a divided nation. This is of great concern. Which leaves many of us asking the question, what can we do? Can we do what Americans have always done? Can we look beyond ourselves and be thankful, honored, and humbled to live in a country as great as The United States of America? Yes, we can.

CONFETTI POPPERS Confetti poppers are another simple craft to create this month. Start with new plastic push pop holders—you can even try this with used ones, just make sure to thoroughly clean out the holder and allow the cardboard to dry. If push pop holders are unavailable, a toilet paper roll and a balloon will work as well. Using paper cut to size or colorful duct tape, you can decorate the outside of the cylinder. Next, use purchased confetti or make your own using a hole punch and paper to create the paper cut outs. You can also cut or rip paper to make the confetti. Once you have this completed, pour your confetti in to the tube and cover it with tissue paper and tape the edges down. If using a balloon, stretch the balloon over one end of the paper roll and tie a knot in it on one side and fill with confetti. When you’re ready to celebrate, use the plunger to push through the tube or pop the fun out of your cylinder by pulling back your balloon and releasing.
CANVAS FLAGS Canvas flags are fun to make for all ages. Start with a canvas size of your choosing. With a pencil, lightly sketch the stars and strips to ensure you have enough room for both. Now, use a paintbrush or dip your fingers in paint and use to fill in the red, white, and blue areas of your flag. Once the blue dries, you can add some white stars and you’re done. You can add string to the back of your canvas flag for easy hanging.

then your sauce and your pasta, so you can more or less completely customize your order. There are nine sauces to thesicilianbutcher.com (602) 775-5140 choose from, including basil15530 N. Tatum tinged marinara, vodka cream Boulevard, #160, sauce, and a decadent truffle Phoenix mushroom cream. Pastas are masterfully made with not a bad “bottom” among them. The mafalde (wide ribbon pasta) is one of the most popular, with the paccheri (large tube pasta) a close second. Spaghetti is of the long square variety, and ever al dente. If you manage to make room for dessert ($10 each), you won’t be sorry. Olive oil cake with mascarpone cream and house-made honeycomb is spongy and sweet, but in a comforting, not cloying, sense. The espresso caramel budino is a bed of vanilla custard covered in an eye-opening espresso caramel. The “Deconstructed Cannoli” is decent and adorned with crushed pistachio, candied lemon wheel, and pizzelle cookies, but if you’re Italian and grew up with an auntie who made magnificent cannoli, you should know right now that nothing will ever be as good—but The Sicilian Butcher’s version isn’t bad. The place is almost always packed, inside and out, which is pretty impressive. Some of that has to do with the Maggiore reputation for creating superlative Italian dining experiences, but I’m convinced it’s mostly because of the mind-blowing meatballs. They’re the kind of the food experience that makes you loudly enthuse “It’s sooo good!”

Sun FAQs
It’s July, and that means backyard barbeques, pool parties, and triple digit heat. Pharmacist Tara Storjohann sat down with fellow pharmacist Martin Faridian to learn more about sun safety.
40 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || JULY 2018
What is a sunburn? The sun emits powerful ultraviolet (UV) rays that can damage the RNA in skin cells. This aggravates the neighboring cells to mount an inflammatory response, which we recognize as a sunburn. Other effects of RNA damage include skin pigmentation (darkened skin) and the development of skin cancer.
What´s the difference between sunscreen and sunblock? Although the two terms are used interchangeably, sunblock contains metals like zinc and titanium that act as barriers against harmful UV rays. Sunscreens absorb the UVA rays before they reach the dermal layer. Consider sunblock if you burn easily.
What does SPF mean? SPF stands for sun protection factor. An SPF of 15 means that the sunscreen only allows 1/15th of harmful radiation to reach the skin. It’s important to apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sun exposure to allow it to be properly absorbed.
When should I reapply? Sunscreen should be reapplied about every two hours, regardless of the SPF value. Even if you are using waterproof sunscreen, reapplication after swimming is highly recommended.
I´ve heard sunscreen lotion works better than the aerosol can, is this true?
Can my medication make me more sensitive to the sun? Yes! Certain antibiotics, oral contraceptives, diuretics, and antidepressants can increase your sensitivity to the sun. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions regarding your current therapy.
No! You can use any formulation you prefer because both forms provide adequate protection from the sun when applied correctly.
How can I reduce my risk of developing a sunburn? Whenever outdoors, try to limit your exposure to the sun’s harmful rays through physical barriers (long sleeve shirts, hats, etc.), chemical barriers (like sunscreen), and staying in the shade whenever possible. Keep an eye out for high pollution advisory reports, as the sun’s rays can be extra powerful on those days.
What can I use to treat a sunburn? The first thing you can do is cool the skin by applying a cool compress to the sunburn or taking a cool bath or shower. The next step is to apply a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to reduce inflammation and help the body repair itself. Another option is to apply low dose (0.5-1%) hydrocortisone cream to help decrease the pain, inflammation, and speed healing. It’s important to drink plenty of water and to stay hydrated as this also provides the body with moisture and helps the healing process. Pain relievers like ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) can also be used to minimize the inflammation from the sunburn and help with the pain.

When might a sunburn require medical attention? If the sunburn blisters and covers a large area of the body, it’s best to have your healthcare provider check it out. Also, if signs of infection are present such as increasing pain, swelling, red streaks leading away from an open blister, or yellow drainage (pus) from an open blister medical attention is required. Finally, contact your healthcare provider right away if you experience extreme pain, fever, chills, confusion, or nausea along with the sunburn.
TARA STORJOHANN What should I avoid when I have a sunburn? Petroleum jelly, butter, and oil-based products should be avoided because they clog the pores, which prevents the body from sweating and can trap the heat. Pain numbing creams such as benzocaine and lidocaine can cause allergies in some patients and will delay the healing process. You’ll also want to avoid tight fitting clothing, as this can irritate the burn.

better | BEAUTY WITH SUMMER in fully swing and temperatures in the 100s, now is the time to get serious about your summer skin care routine. What products you use on summer skin can make a huge difference in skin’s overall health, wellness, and glow. Here are a few of my favorite products and tips to enhance skin health during the dog days of summer in the desert: • Combat dry desert air by investing in a good humidifier and running it every single night. Skin repairs itself during the night so running a humidifier while you sleep is an excellent way to boost the skin’s innate ability to heal while locking in moisture.

Summer skin care tips and products. By Elizabeth Hausman
• Lighten up your skin care routine by switching from a heavy foundation to a tinted SPF lotion. Summer is the time to think sheer and natural and to let your glow shine.
Favorite Tinted SPF: Intellishade by Revision Skincare. Intellishade is an award-winning, self-adjusting (yes, it will automatically self adjust to all skin tones), tinted moisturizer that gives skin a touch of sheer, healthy color. Intellishade is formulated with a blend of three antiaging peptides and broad-spectrum SPF 45 UVA and UVB protection. • Amp up with vitamin C antioxidants. Antioxidants are key in summer and play a critical role to help in combating and reversing skin damaging free radicals that form during UV exposure. Vitamin C can help reverse sun damage and aids in brightening skin.
Favorite Vitamin C Serum: Vitamin C Lotion 30% by Revision Skincare. Revision’s 30% Vitamin C Lotion contains the most advanced form of vitamin C for healthy, radiant skin and is one of the strongest concentrations of vitamin C available. It contains THD Ascorbate, a highly stabilized, very powerful form of vitamin C, which brightens dull skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. • Treat sunspots and hyperpigmentation. It’s important to pay special attention to the dark patches that appear on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip during the summer months. If this happens to you, there is a good chance you have something called melasma. Melasma is often stimulated by sun exposure and the reason why it’s often at its worst during the summer months. To help treat and prevent melasma from surfacing, be sure to apply a lightening cream every evening.
Favorite Lightening Cream: Lytera 2.0 Pigment Correcting Serum by SkinMedica. Lytera 2.0 is a newly reformulated correcting serum that addresses even the most stubborn discoloration, regardless of skin type or genetic makeup. Improvement is seen in as early as two weeks with progressively dramatic results at 12 weeks and beyond. It’s a non-hydroquinone, retinol-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic formulation. • Pay special attention to the eyes. Strong sun and heat can wreak havoc on the delicate skin around the eyes. It’s critical to pay special attention to this area in the summer and be sure to apply a highly moisturizing eye cream two times per day to ensure optimal skin health.

Favorite Eye Cream: Rejuvenate Eye Smoothing Daily Treatment Cream by Skin Better Science. Daily Treatment Cream Eye is a revolutionary eye cream formulated with a cocktail of potent ingredients to recharge the delicate eye area. It features an InterFuse patented transport system that allows the delivery of large sized skincare ingredients to penetrate faster and deeper with pinpoint precision. This formula will diminish the appearance of crow’s feet, puffiness, dehydration, firmness, bags, and under-eye darkness. • Pump up hydration with hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that naturally occurs in the skin’s structure that keeps skin moisturized and plump. Hyaluronic acid has the ability to retain close to 1,000 times its weight in water, thus helping skin to stay moisturized.
Favorite Hyaluronic Acid Product: Lines Smoothing Intensive Treatment by Skin Better Science. Lines is the first of its kind no-needle solution to wrinkles. This topical hyaluronic acid smoother is formulated with the same InterFuse technology as their eye cream and is the only formula to contain injectable-grade hyaluronic acid particles to minimize the appearance of deep wrinkles and to boost moisture in the skin. • Protect your pout. It’s especially important to pay attention to your lips during the summer months. Just like the rest of your skin, lips need to be protected from the sun and moisture needs to be replenished daily. Always be sure to apply a lip balm that contains SPF when spending time outdoors.
Favorite Summer Lip Treatment: Perk Lip Treatment. Perk is the only hybrid system that combines an in-office procedure with a take-home product. Treat your lips to this quick 10-minute in-office procedure and receive a 30-day supply of a take-home maintenance product. With Perk Lip, lips are smoothed, moisturized, and perfectly primed. Lip Revitalizing Serum uses key ingredients such as peppermint oil and peony extract to gently exfoliate, hydrate, and lightly plump lips. You take home one half of the Lip Revitalizing Serum to apply on your lips, twice daily, plus, you receive a SPF Hydrating Lip Balm to lock in moisture. • Take a cold shower. Hot water will further dry out sensitive summer skin. A cool shower helps calm inflamed skin, helps keep skin unoccluded and decreases acne breakouts. Stick with cooler shower temperatures during the hot summer months.

• Wear a wide brimmed hat. A baseball cap isn’t enough in the summer and cannot protect your face fully from the sun’s damaging rays. To protect your face fully, opt for a hat with a large brim. Better yet, find one that has special SPF protection built right in. You can find a good SPF hat from Solumbra. Solumbra offers 100-plus SPF protection in their Sun Precautions clothing line. • Exfoliate dry skin. Be sure to include exfoliating scrubs one to two times per week to help encourage cellular turnover and to help shed dead, dry skin cells. Use skin scrubs on dry skin before you shower.
Favorite Facial Scrub: Finishing Touch Microdermabrasion Scrub by Revision Skincare. Finishing Touch is a serious facial exfoliation scrub that removes dead, dehydrated surface cells from the skin for an immediate soft, smooth appearance. It contains Polynesian volcanic black sand, ultra-fine pumice, and freshwater silt to help fight impurities, brighten dull skin, and leaves a moist, clean feel.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. I can’t stress this enough. Dehydration in the desert is not only bad for your skin, it’s also a serious health risk. Make a conscious effort to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. You can do this by carrying a water bottle with you everywhere you go and making sure that you drink at least one ounce of water every 30 minutes throughout the day. Not only will this help prevent dehydration, staying hydrated also aids in detoxification of the body by flushing out damaging toxins.
