Flag Etiquette
Local Judge Gerald A. Williams talks about respect and care for the symbol of our nation.
JUDGE GERALD A. WILLIAMS The justice of the peace for the North Valley Justice Court. The court’s jurisdiction includes Anthem and Desert Hills.
“Consider yo u rs e l f the f lag. Consider yo u r r i g h t shoulder to be the blue f i e l d . Fa c e people with yo u rs e l f t o t h e r i g h t .” WHAT IS SPECIAL about the month of June? Are there any good holidays? Well, June 2 is National Doughnut Day, which certainly sounds like a good idea. Pentecost, Father’s Day, and of course, Juneteenth also occur in June. D-Day occurred on June 6, 1944; but there is one other often-overlooked day. Flag Day is June 14. American flag etiquette is important to me, perhaps because I’m an Eagle Scout and a member of the American Legion; but for other reasons as well. It’s just basic common courtesy. What you learned in elementary school about not allowing our nation’s flag to touch the ground (or the floor or water under it) still rings true. When such mis-
18 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || JUNE 2018
handling occurs, it’s a sign of disrespect, as is using the flag as a form of drapery, for advertising, or as an item of clothing. If you’re confused about which way to display the flag, that’s okay. It can get a little complicated given the various options for a flag to be vertical, horizontal, and/or next to a speaker. The 1979 Boy Scout Handbook suggests this simple rule. “Consider yourself the flag. Consider your right shoulder to be the blue field. Face people with yourself to the right.” If a flag gets dirty, then clean it. If one gets torn, then mend it. If one becomes damaged beyond repair, then drop it off at an American Legion Post so that it will be destroyed in a dignified manner.
— 1 9 7 9 B OY S C O U T HANDBOOK Although it’s seldom enforced, there’s actually a set of federal laws known as the U.S. Flag Code. One section notes, “No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.” 4 U.S.C. § 8(j). So why is flag etiquette important? It’s a
symbol of freedom and justice and has been for over 240 years. Both in times of war and in times of peace, its very presence has provided notice to our adversaries and assurance to our allies that representatives from our country are present and that our republic lives. Some symbols matter more than others; our flag is a symbol that matters more than most.
Is it Okay to Burn the Flag in Protest? In a famous case, as part of a protest against Ronald Reagan’s administration, the defendant burned the American flag while others chanted, “America, the red, white, and blue. We spit on you. You stand for plunder, you will go under.” The protest occurred in Dallas while the city was hosting the Republican National Convention.

By a vote of five to four, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed the protestor’s conviction and held that burning an American flag during a protest rally was expressive conduct that is protected by the First Amendment. Justice Antonin Scalia was the fifth vote. The two justices from Arizona, William Rehnquist and Sandra Day O’Conner, dissented. They noted that the protestor was free to say anything he wanted to; but that our flag deserved at least minimal protection because of its unique role. It should not be “just another symbol.” This dissenting opinion also noted the irony in the result from the majority opinion, “The government may conscript men into the Armed Forces where they must fight and perhaps die for the flag, but the government may not prohibit the public burning of the banner under which they fight.” JUNE 2018

PLACE
Sirius Black AGE: 15 weeks
BREED: Black Lab FAMILY: The Berlins
BACKSTORY: “For the last six to nine months, we toyed with the idea of getting a puppy for our 7-year-old son, and began visiting shelters, pet stores, and other pet adoption events in search of the perfect pet. One day, while our son was sick and stayed home from school, we jumped on Craigslist (something I’ve never done before) to look at puppies to cheer him up,” says Julie Berlin. She clicked on an ad, sent the breeder a brief message, and the breeder instantly returned Julie’s message with a detailed email with pictures of Sirius, his litter mates (all named after characters from Harry Potter), and his mom and dad. In a matter of minutes, the Berlins had made arrangements to go see the puppy that afternoon, and it was love at first sight.
22 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || JUNE 2018
DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS:
“He’s my little social butterfly,” says Julie. “He loves everyone he meets and immediately rolls over to get his belly rubbed.” The same is true when meeting other dogs. He gets so excited and bows with his whole back end wiggling to engage his new friend.
HOUSEHOLD ANTICS:
“Besides sleeping on the cold tile under the kitchen table, Sirius loves to play with his rope, ball, and our son’s hula-hoops. He loves when we throw the hula-hoop. He’ll chase after it, grab it in his mouth, and then jump up on a patio chair like he’s a performer in a circus. It’s just so darn cute,” says Julie.
FAVORITE ADVENTURES:
“Since he’s still young, we try to take him just about everywhere to get him socialized. He’s quite the hit at our son’s karate dojo. He loves getting all the attention from the kids (and parents) as they enter or leave. Once he is fully vaccinated, we plan to take him on lots of adventures,” says Julie.
PREFERRED TREAT:
“Having learned the hard way with previous dogs, we have committed to not giving Sirius ‘people food’. So far, this has been very successful and he never begs at the table or bothers anyone while they are eating. We do reward him with bacon-flavored training treats often as we are working on clicker training with him,” says Julie. Sirius is also a real fan of ice cubes. “We can never get ice out of the dispenser without him being right there in case one of them ‘accidentally’ falls on the ground,” she says.

PLACE Maya ‘Booties’ Clovis AGE: 5 ½ Years
BREED: Chiweenie (Dachshund/ Chihuahua mix)
BACKSTORY: “Long story short, my niece found a dog roaming the streets in Phoenix who looked to either be pregnant or recently had puppies. She took pictures and posted them up near where she found the dog. The owners called and offered her a free puppy for finding their beloved pet. She actually ended up getting two dogs so also we have Maya’s sister, Bella ‘Bones’,” says Marlene Burns.
FAMILY: The Burns
DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS:
“She loves to pray for attention. She always sits on her back legs with her front paws up in the air waiting for you to love on her,” says Marlene.
HOUSEHOLD ANTICS:
“She plays with her two sisters, Bella ‘Bones’ and Auna ‘Baby’,” says Marlene. “Maya likes to twerk on people and my daughters (10 and 12) thinks it’s hilarious and they made up a joke that her favorite color is ‘Twerqoise’.” EXPIRES 06/30/18
FAVORITE ADVENTURES:
She loves going on car rides looking out the window for javelinas (the Burns have them roaming around their neighborhood).
PREFERRED TREAT:
“Her favorite is natural NUBZ from Costco. She used to love the veal and sweet potato jerky they had, but they are not carrying it right now,” says Marlene. JUNE 2018

DAVID BOWEN
Family Values Pastor David Bowen encourages families to consider what they value.
WHAT A FAMILY values and how a family expresses those values is often passed down from generation to generation. Although every family's list of values may be different, there are some common values that are cross-cultural and have no age or gender restrictions such as social, work, and moral values. Teaching values, modeling values, and appreciating values means to see that others should be acknowledged and respected. One of the keys to successfully teaching and incorporating a family value system is to limit the list. Make it manageable and not too large. I would suggest no more than seven core values. Another key is listing values that can be achieved by all family members. The goal, especially with children, is to set them up to succeed, not to fail. Asking them to hold to a value that they don’t have the ability to achieve can cause more heartache than joy. Here are some examples: LEARN TO APPRECIATE OTHERS. By definition a family is a social unit and socially our culture has lost the art of be-
ing polite and having old fashion manners. To teach and incorporate values that appreciate others into your family will be something that will be noticed by all simply because it is no longer the norm in social behavior, which is sad. Since when did being rude become more acceptable than being polite? LEARN TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS. Ever wonder when coarse language became normal and socially acceptable? It seems anything can now be said anywhere and it’s no longer offensive. Families have a choice. We can let our family flow in that cultural stream or we can go against the stream and speak words of affirmation. Think about it, when was the last time someone encouraged you? On the other hand, when was the last time someone spoke harshly or criticized you? How did the two interactions make you feel? Exactly! LEARN TO BE A GIVER NOT A TAKER. This value starts with understanding compassion. Compassion can be taught by
Married for over 20 years, David is the father of three girls. He has a local radio program and pastors Standing Stones Community Church and Standing Stones Christian Academy.
understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do what you can to help. This could be an act of service or it could be as simple as speaking kind words. LEARN TO BE PART OF A TEAM. This value will pay dividends in the work environment, as well as in the social life of each family member. We aren’t created to live our lives in isolation. We have been created to interact within a community. It seems our culture has lost the desire to take responsibility. It’s far too easy and far too common to blame others. Being a part of a team eliminates that type of thinking and behavior. We’re either all in this together or we’re not; it can’t go both ways. Once you have established values, the next step is to establish boundaries. A boundary, much like a property line, defines who you are and more importantly who you are not. It describes what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. When I do weddings I encourage the newlywed couple to write out boundaries. I encourage them to think through and agree on issues such as, what are the boundaries for spending money, for family time, for church, for giving to others. It’s amazing how much value family values have, as you’ll find out after taking the above steps.

To Dad, with Love SURPRISE YOUR POP ON FATHER’S DAY WITH THESE HOMEMADE CRAFTS. By Shannon Fisher Photos by Shannon Fisher Photography JUNE IS HERE, which means Father’s Day is right around the corner. I know in 85085, there’re lots of great dads to celebrate. With that in mind, here are some easy crafts you can make at home to show your dad how much you care. Most of the materials can be found at the dollar store or a craft store.
Heartfelt Message Make a note for dad that is from the heart. We used the saying, “A Daughter May Outgrow Your Lap, but Not Your Heart.” We used a small box we found at the dollar store. We painted it and added some blue sparkly scrapbook paper to the center. We cut out the typed message and glued that on to the blue paper. You could paint a message on as well or even use sticker letters. Whatever you write to dad, I’m sure he will love the heartfelt message.
Tape Art Another way to create a message is by using colorful tape. We used a colorful craft tape to write the message, “I Love You Dad.” After the message is taped down, you can color over it with crayon or markers. We left the tape, but if you use blue painters tape, you can easily peel up the tape after the paint or markers have dried. You can frame the art or use a craft glue like mod podge to paste it to a wood board so that it stands up. Allow your art to dry and you have a unique lettered gift for dad.

SHANNON FISHER A local wife, mom of two girls, and owner of Shannon Fisher Photography. She taught high school and elementary art before opening her photography business. In her spare time, she is an active volunteer in the community as a Girl Scout leader, school PTSA vice president, and with other organizations in the Valley.
Roll Up Card A roll up card is an easy craft for anyone to make. Take craft sticks and lay out how many you will need to write your message. Next, use a craft tape or hot glue string to each of the sticks, leaving a little space between each stick so that they can be rolled up when the message is complete. Tape or glue on both sides of the sticks all the way around. Next, use a permanent marker to write your message on each stick. Roll it up and tie it with ribbon or string for a special note for dad. I hope all of these crafts are easy for you to make for that special guy in your life. Wising all the local dads a happy Father’s Day!

Plan Your Outdoor Living Space to Accompany Your Personality
“The big idea is to make sure there’s a functional space where you can place plants in an area which outlines your home,” notes Chad Norris, vice president of sales and lead designer for Desert Foothills Landscape. “The outdoor is a work of art. It’s the area you want to frame.” Chad emphasizes that the landscape design concept accentuate the interior design, flowing to the outside. The biggest suggestion, Chad adds, is to design a landscape that draws the homeowner to the exterior and utilizes the various senses, creating a destination of pride. Nick Stelfox of Carefree Outdoor Living agrees: “I always ask customers, ‘How do you want to function in the space?’ Your ideas help carve out the areas which drive your interest.” Nick says, “The outdoor space isn’t an area where people are throwing patio furniture in there anymore; it is where people are creating living spaces.” In fact, one of the biggest trends incorporates outdoor living rooms and media centers next to rustic landscapes. “One of the hottest trends that I’m seeing is having a fire table instead of a coffee table,” says Nick. “Many companies are starting to create media [like TVs] that are made of materials that are created for the outside.”

Ditch Pools and Use Waterscapes As Artforms
Owner Kirk Bianchi of Waterscapes by Bianchi Design believes that outdoor living should appear like “an artistic masterpiece.” “I think people are more sophisticated and they are not settling for run-of-the-mill designs,” notes Kirk. “They want architectural projects that seamlessly integrate the landscape and the pool.” To create this artistic illusion, Kirk describes that a pool is more of a reflective element of the yard that is subordinate to the surroundings of the desert landscape. “The landscape shouldn’t be forced into the scene,” says Kirk. Instead of smaller pool structures that are carved off by bricked walls, vanishing-pool edges are what’s appearing to be the artistic trend for 2018. “I really love overflow, vanishing-edge pools,” says Kirk. “Even if there is no view or vista, you can still do a water flush with the ground effect. The reason is because of the mirror. If you throw a rock in the pool the ripples go over the edge because they don’t bounce back. Once again, it can enhance the landscape sculptures you place by the pool.” “The house is an accessory; it’s all about the backyard. If you do it right, people will go through your house and almost overlook it. Because whenever you have the chance to develop your own personal escape from scratch, you have the chance to develop your own oasis,” he says.

Incorporate Mature Plants as Sculptures
When it comes to planning landscapes, the main characters on the stage is the placement of mature and sculptural plants. “People are catching onto the signature of investing in mature and salvated, almost like art pieces. Instead of getting little pieces that will grow into 20 years they will get one iconic piece,” says Kirk. “Some examples are an ironwood tree that’s bonsai and artful.” Instead of placing these sculptural pieces around your pool, he recommends framing these pieces by the edge of the pool. “That way,” he says, “it’s really reflected in the water and the plant is showcased.” Suggestions extend to cactus specimens such as saguaros, Joshua trees, and yucca rostrata. “These are unique to our environment and very bold,” says Kirk. “As opposed to leafy and loose plants, that are not clearly defined where landscapers hack them with their trimmers.” Chad, whose business has a private nursery and cultivates large specimen cacti, also agrees: “Complement your landscape with timeless large specimen cacti features that are a staple of the Southwestern setting.” There, you’ll find hundreds of rare-and-exotic shrubs, succulents, and unique specimen cacti to pair and promote prominence and instant gratification to your landscape. What’s For Dinner
Teriyaki chicken skewers are sweet, tangy, and tender, perfect for a weeknight dinner over rice. By Leann Jordan
Mama J’s Tips 1 Let the chicken sit out for a half hour before grilling. When the core temperature of the chicken is the same as the outside, the chicken will cook more evenly and you’ll get a better sear. Cold protein also throws off cooking times and lowers the temperature of your pan or grill. 1 Serve over rice with a side of broccoli florets.
> Add brown sugar, honey, salt and lime. Stir to dissolve. Turn heat to medium high and whisk in 1 to 2 teaspoons of the cornstarch slurry mix until the sauce is thick. > Strain sauce through a fine mesh sieve. Set aside to use as a dip. INGREDIENTS FOR THE MARINATED GRILLED CHICKEN 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, sliced into thin ½ inch strips lengthwise 5 Tbs. extra virgin olive oil 1 shallot, minced 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 Tbs. chopped parsley kosher salt freshly cracked black pepper > Marinate chicken in oil, aromatics, and seasonings for 20 minutes. > Heat grill or grill pan to medium high. > Skewer strips of chicken and grill for 2 minutes on first side, then 1 to 2 minutes on the other side. > Hang exposed wooden parts of skewer off the grill to prevent the wood from burning. > When skewers come off the grill, dip chicken in teriyaki sauce and serve. DILLON’S
KANSAS CITY BBQ Pecan wood smoked meats are menu highlights. BY ANDREW LEACH IN 1998, Rich Dillon and George Valverde were working at a restaurant together. There, they would talk about owning their own place one day. Their dream was realized the following year with Dillon’s Kansas City BBQ Restaurant and Sports Bar, which has since developed into R & G BBQ Concepts. The duo’s first location has since grown to four locations in the Valley. Each of Dillon’s four locations offers a twist on the Dillon’s dining experience. The original Thunderbird location has a farmhouse atmosphere, while their newest restaurant at the Marina at Lake Pleasant has a nautical flair with open-air dining. Meanwhile, their location at the Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium allows patrons to dine alongside a 60,000-gallon shark tank or on the patio next to a vibrant flamingo exhibit. For our visit, we went to Dillon’s Arrowhead restaurant, located on 59th Avenue. The space features a spacious, newly remodeled bar and 30 televisions. Although barbeque is front and center on the menu, there’re a variety of other items available that run the gamut of American favorites. As for Dillon’s barbeque, they utilize pecan-wood smoking for their meats. Guest favorites include beef brisket, baby back ribs, and super slow cooked pulled pork. We started our meal with the Bavarian pretzel ($5.99). A giant pretzel, it’s lightly salted, served warm, and is accompanied by homemade beer cheese for dipping. An ideal starter
