between neighbors Happy New Year A year ago, one of the things we had planned was to start 85085 Magazine. Fast-forward 12 months, and you’re holding the fifth issue in your hands! It’s always rewarding when a plan or a resolution comes together and you see it all the way through to fruition. But it’s important to recognize that a goal is only one piece of the larger puzzle. As we move forward into 2015, we can’t rest on the fact ADAM TOREN that we actually made it happen and that we Publisher reached our goal. This year, we need to focus adam@85085magazine.com on making it better—and better. As we strive to solidify the magazine’s position as your hometown publication, we’re continually looking to bring the most important element to the pages—you! With that in mind, the 85085 Team hit the street to ask what you and your neighbors have planned for the New Year. From spending quality time with family to taking more risks and everything in between, you’ll be surprised by some of the resolutions and just might find a couple to add to your own list. There’s a lot more inside to get you started off on the right foot this year. Take, for instance, David Bowen’s column on ways to make 2015 the year you’ll stay on track or Jamila Watson’s article on how to throw an amazing Super Bowl bash. Meanwhile, the always-entertaining Shelly Sakala, our resident meteorologist, is on hand to tell us what else we have to tease our snowedin relatives back East about, aside from our spectacular January weather. Next, we check in with Realtor David Fisher, who explains why you should cover your bases before heading into a new home-builder subdivision. Then there’s local bibliophile Chandy McCarty with suggestions on how to ignite the reading spark in your children—and much more! We hope you find the content inspiring and fun. Don’t forget to check back in next month because our resolution is to make each issue of the magazine better than the last. Wishing you the best in your 2015 efforts, and remember, it’s the small steps that get you to the next level. MATTHEW TOREN Cheers!

fresh IDEAS FOR LIVING WELL
Grow Your Own Parsley A popular garnish, parsley is an underrated seasoning that pairs perfectly with eggs, fish, sauces, and soups. It also complements other fresh herbs and is essential to bouquet garni—a bundle of herbs tied together to prepare soup, stock, and various stews— along with bay leaf, marjoram, and thyme.
Growing Guide* • Soil preparation: Parsley grows best in rich, moist, welldrained soil in full sun to partial shade. • Planting: Sow seeds outdoors when the soil temperature averages 50°F. You’ll need some patience because parsley seed germinates extremely slowly, often requiring six weeks before the seedlings poke up through the soil. (You can speed germination by soaking the seeds in water overnight before planting.) • Spacing: Once the seedlings pop up, thin them to 8 to 10 inches apart.
Harvesting
You can begin harvesting parsley as soon as the plants are growing vigorously. Snip individual outer stems from the plants; they’ll continue to produce new growth all season long. Parsley dries and freezes well. If you dry it, crush it by hand after it’s completely dry and store it in an airtight container. *Courtesy of organicgardening.com

Party Time There’s more to our great January weather than teasing your snowed-in relatives back East, says meteorologist Shelley Sakala. AWESOME WEATHER CALLS for awesome events, and this month is no exception. When you don’t have to worry about digging your stadium out of the snow (like in Buffalo, New York this past November), you tend to be an attractive destination for the biggest games and the biggest crowds. Sure, all the added tourists and winter visitors mean the roads get a little crowded and you might spend more time waiting at the bar for your table to be ready (not the worst thing in the world), but we’ve got the Super Bowl! And when they show those aerial shots from the blimp during the big game, your relatives will know how good you’ve got it here in Arizona. You won’t even have to call them to brag.
Shelley Sakala is a meteorologist and former weather anchor/reporter at ABC 15 who still enjoys talking about the weather. She’ s now a Realtor with Keller Williams Arizona Realty and an 85085 resident. 16 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || JANUARY 2015

{ GUIDE TO JANUARY WEATHER and FASHION
Jan. Pro Bowl If you’re not lucky enough to score Super Bowl tickets, you 25 can still watch the league’s best players go head-to-head
in the Pro Bowl at University of Phoenix Stadium. This annual event was played in Hawaii for 30 consecutive seasons before moving to the mainland. Apparently, the league realized that nobody beats Arizona when it comes to the weather—not even Hawaii.
Recommended Dress Code: As the game will be played indoors at University of Phoenix Stadium, jeans and a sweater are all you need besides comfortable shoes for crossing the stadium parking lot and climbing the steps to your seats. Team apparel is always acceptable, and since this is pro football’s version of an all-star game, you’ve got a choice of 32 teams to cheer for.
Jan. Waste Management Phoenix Open is a legendary event here in Arizona. It’s like you’re 27-31 This going to a block party and a golf tournament breaks out.
Last year, 563,000 people attended this event, which features both daytime activities (the part where they golf) and evening events (huge party). It’s an amazing affair and worth checking out. Hopefully, you’ve been stockpiling your sick days now so you can use them during tournament week. Golf fanatics, college kids, millionaires, trophy wives—they’ll all be there. And you should be, too. Recommended Dress Code: This one gets tricky, as the tournament is outdoors and spans several days that may include sunshine, rain, gray skies, and the occasional desert snowstorm. My best recommendation is to check the weather on the day you’re attending and dress appropriately. You’ll have to balance out the daytime/ evening combination, too. While it’s perfectly acceptable to go casual during the day while you watch golf, remember that once the sun sets, the party begins. And the last thing you want is to meet your future sugar daddy while wearing grass-stained khaki shorts. Consider wearing layers. Or throw a change of clothes in the car.
Feb. Super Bowl There is no bigger stage. Celebrities, athletes, and 1 corporate bigwigs all merge together with us common
folk for one magical event seen on television by more than 100 million people. It’s our time to shine, Arizona. Recommended Dress Code: From a style point of view, it’s probably not the best time to throw on that WrestleMania T-shirt and cargo shorts. If the Cards happen to be playing in the big game, then it’s all about red. Otherwise, keep it casual and comfortable. Jeans, sweater, comfy shoes—maybe even get your hair did. After all, you just might end up on television in front of the entire world.

New Build Cover your bases before heading into a new home-builder subdivision, says local real estate agent David Fisher. WE HAVE ALL been in the car on a Sunday afternoon, spotted the “Now Open” sign at a new home-builder subdivision, and popped in to take a look at the models. You may pass the sign every day on the way home from work and wonder what the homes look like. Believe it or not, the signs are designed using inviting colors that advertisers claim will evoke this response. Read more to find out why you may want to think twice next time.
18 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || JANUARY 2015
It is built into the price! What most people do not know is that not only do buyers not pay the commission involved in using a Realtor to purchase a home (commission is always paid by seller) but that the Realtor commission is worked into the price on new homes. The builder prices the homes assuming that every buyer will have a Realtor, and the commission cannot be negotiated out of the price even if you’re unrepresented.
David Fisher is the designated broker and owner of Fisher Realty. He’ s been practicing real estate for over 15 years in Arizona, specializing in the Northwest Valley. He has lived in 85085 for the last nine years with his wife and two daughters and is an active member of the Norterra community. One strike, and your Realtor’s out. Have you ever noticed that on the front door it says something to the effect of “If you are working with a Realtor, they must accompany you on your first visit.” The first time most people read this, they think, “Well I’m not working with an agent right now, but if I like the homes, I will bring my agent.” They may tell the new-home agent that they’re working with a Realtor but he or she could not make it that day. The truth is, you can’t bring your agent into the deal once you’ve toured the homes.
Realtors protect your interests. New-home subdivisions are governed by the Department of Real Estate, so the builder is obligated to treat the public in a fair manner. However, they don’t always tell you about the best deals to be had the first time around. A good Realtor will know the correct questions to ask to ensure that their Buyers are truly getting the best price and incentives when buying. There are also ways to negotiate a better price in some situations, and most buyers don’t know about them. Finally, a Realtor is your advocate. We know how to protect our clients’ best interests, look over the builder contract, and make sure everything is done fairly. Once you sign the contract, some things cannot be changed.
All homes are not created equal. All of my agents know which homebuilders build a good home and which ones cut corners. We’re also able to look at a builder’s “included features” and know which ones are important and will save you money and which are just fluff. A good Realtor will also be able to help you in the all-important design center appointment. This is where sticker shock can set in, and buyers may make spur-of-the-moment decisions. There are tons of ways to save money on a new home by doing a couple of quick projects directly after closing. I have personally saved my clients hundreds of thousands of dollars by doing this.
New homes are a terrific investment! It’s important to make sure you’re covered just in case. Realtors are out there to protect the public in real estate matters just as lawyers are in legal matters. If someone else is footing the bill, why not protect yourself? JANUARY 2015

Are You an Entrepreneur? Five questions that differentiate between the settlers and the pioneers of the business frontier. By Matthew Toren
THE SUBJECT OF entrepreneurship can raise some deep questions about identity. Are you a business owner or an entrepreneur? What does it truly mean to be an entrepreneur, and how do you know whether you’re cut out for it? My feeling is that entrepreneurs don’t become entrepreneurs by starting their own business—they start their own business because they are entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs are willing to risk their own financial security for their big vision and mission. They have their own closely held set of beliefs about what they’re here to do and why, but realistically, only a select few are willing to dive into the deep end and risk the uncomfortable position of not having a regular paycheck for the belief in themselves and what they’re here to achieve.
What does it mean to be an entrepreneur? One important part of that answer is scale. Are you starting your business to scale it into a global or national solution, or are you doing it to enjoy a great niche? Entrepreneurs have huge ideas that they want to grow to scale and then sell or manage. Small-business owners tend to grow slowly with calculated small risks and steady, manageable growth. The good news is that there’s no wrong answer when it comes to the business-owner-or-entrepreneur question. Both have their risks and rewards, their ups and downs, and their pros and cons. But if you’re wondering beyond the basic concept of scalability whether you might be an entrepreneur instead of just a smallbusiness owner, here are some questions you’ll want to consider to further determine your answer.
You might be an entrepreneur if… 1. YOU AREN’T COMFORTABLE SITTING ON THE SIDELINES WAITING FOR SOLUTIONS.
While a small-business owner is certainly creative, an entrepreneur feels restless when he or she is relegated to a “wait and see” stance within any business. Entrepreneurs thrive under pressure and will always look for solutions where they can excel. If working inside your comfort zone makes you restless, then you already have one of the most important traits of every entrepreneur. You seek out solutions, and you want to discover and create your own version of an improved world. Your obsession with creating solutions is a large part of what will drive your scalability. That which is personal is most universal, so you already know that if you have a deep personal problem with an issue, odds are good that a lot of other people do as well. You want to create the answer and share that solution to scale so that others can have an improved life.
20 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || JANUARY 2015
2. YOU AREN’T SATISFIED WITH THE STATUS QUO.
Entrepreneurs are the fanatics. Whatever their interests are, they dive into them full force. You’re not comfortable with “the way things have always been done.” Entrepreneurs look to the status quo as the baseline, the jumpingoff point to the next new frontier they’re going to create. You’re the one who would’ve ventured out to settle the West instead of staying put in established territories. In part, excellence drives entrepreneurs, but the more important motivator for the best entrepreneurs is the need to be at the bottom-right side of any bell curve. Innovation is the name of the game for the most successful entrepreneurial minds. The status quo is never good enough for the entrepreneur.
3. YOUR DECISION MAKING IS AIRTIGHT, EVEN UNDER PRESSURE.
Entrepreneurs don’t pass the buck. You take responsibility for your success and for your failures, and that’s universal across your whole life, not just your business. Other people find excuses; you find accountability and you stand for your decisions. You are the final say for every opportunity, partnership, and financial decision that your business will undergo. Trusting your instincts and decisions is a trait of entrepreneurs. You can’t be apologetic about your success or your failures. Entrepreneurs know that failures mean learning and learning means improvement and improvement means success. Be secure in yourself, your intellect, and your perceptive nature. 4. YOU HAVE ENDURANCE.
5. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY BEYOND PASSIONATE ABOUT WHAT YOU DO.
Entrepreneurship is a marathon, not a sprint. If you find you’re easily burning out with life’s daily pressures, then entrepreneurship may not be for you. There’s an idealized vision that you get to do what you want as an entrepreneur, which is absolutely true. However, the dark underbelly of that reality is that you’re also fully responsible for yourself. All your income, all your success, your team’s entire livelihood—it all comes down to you, and that’s a lot of pressure. There are no easy solutions or get-rich-quick schemes for the true entrepreneur. There will be ups and downs after starting your business, but the triumphs and hardships of entrepreneurship will make you a smarter and more effective businessperson. The best entrepreneurs never give up regardless of their success or failure. They stick with their vision and can handle the incredible pressures of entrepreneurship. They know that life is all about the long game, and they never get shortsighted during their hardships.
Many times, those who struggle in school end up becoming successful entrepreneurs. Why is that? They weren’t bad students—just the ones that received notes on their report cards with phrases like “So much potential if only he (or she) would apply himself (or herself).” Setting out on your own means that you’re the judge of your own success. The important thing for entrepreneurs is their passion for their niche. Whatever it is they’re doing needs to be the thing they’re willing to risk all the comforts and security of the world to accomplish.
While these aren’t the only rules that dictate success of entrepreneurship, they’re pretty good indicators into your abilities to join the entrepreneurial path.

Igniting the Reading Spark
Local bibliophile Chandy McCarty gets her kids into a reading groove. Here are her recommendations for family reads. IN THE LAST year or so, my kids, Elliot and Ethan, have really settled into a reading groove. I loosely enforce a “no seeing the movie before you’ve read the book” rule, so to my great pleasure, they discovered for themselves the wonder and pleasure of Harry Potter. Since that spark caught, they’re always on the lookout for a great book to capture their attention. I’m thrilled to see them reading books that challenge them, but they’re still young enough for me to enjoy being involved in what they’re reading. I always try to read along with their choices so that I can ask questions and know what types of issues they might encounter. I’ve highlighted a couple of books here that my kids and I both enjoyed and that resulted in some good discussion.
& Matched by Ally Condie It seems like so many of today’s teen bestsellers focus on the end of modern sovereignty as we know it, where brave and attractive teenagers must right the wrongs of their predecessors to reestablish freedom and democracy. Dystopian fiction is an enjoyable escape, and Matched by Ally Condie is a good introduction to the genre. It focuses more on romance (while keeping a safe PG rating) and less on violence. My daughter, who started reading The Hunger Games but said it “kinda freaked her out,” enjoyed this book a lot! & The Giver by Lois Lowry Published in 1993, this book ventured into dystopian territory before it was cool! I had read it several years ago and enjoyed it, so I was excited when my son told me he was reading it in class. The Giver is thought-provoking and wonderfully wellwritten. The author creates warm and striking pictures with her words to describe memories to which readers of all ages can relate, like snow, grandparents, pain, and love. As my son is working his way through the book, he has been asking some great questions and sharing his thoughts. I love a book that makes you think! & Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs I have been absolutely enchanted by this book! Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children tells the fantastical story of an unusual group of children with peculiar abilities and the evil monsters that are out to destroy them. But this book has something special that sets it apart from other works of fantasy. There are mysterious vintage photographs interspersed throughout the pages of the book that tie in perfectly with the author’s descriptions. Just as you’re reading about a set of twins in strange clown costumes, you turn the page and there’s a fascinating photo to offer a visual. Some of the language in this book might make it more suitable for teenagers. And because of the cool pictures, I would recommend this book in hard copy instead of digital format. Try one of these books with your kids, or check out scholastic.com for hundreds of great suggestions sorted by age, grade, and Lexile measure. Happy reading!

Check for a Lump! Local Tisha Morgan catches up with a charity making a difference in the fight against breast cancer. DID YOU KNOW that except for skin cancers, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women? About one in eight (12 percent) women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer during their lifetime. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2014 are as follows: • About 232,670 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. • About 62,570 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is noninvasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer). • About 40,000 women will die from breast cancer. Don’t be a chump! Check for a lump! has a mission to make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. Through their Don’t Be a Chump! Check for a Lump! campaign, they educate our community about breast health awareness and prevention of breast cancer to help save lives. They also offer direct assistance to breast cancer patients through their Wig
Out program, which provides free wigs to breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment in Arizona. 85085 resident Shelley Sakala got involved with Don’t Be a Chump! Check for a Lump! when one of her best friends, Holly Rose, discovered she had breast cancer. Shelley sent her a funny Facebook post about checking your breasts, and, when she did, she found a lump. Holly was in her late 30s, which most people think is very young to have breast cancer, but it really isn’t—it affects women that are much younger. After finishing her treatments, Holly felt that she needed to help spread the word to a younger crowd. She asked Shelley to be a board member to help her. They started the charity five years ago and over the years discovered there was a major need for wigs to provide to women going through chemo. Most insurance companies don’t cover the cost of a wig! Don’t be a chump! Check for a lump! now provides hundreds of wigs every year to women going through chemo to fight breast cancer. Shelley and her family volunteer an-

Let It Snow!
Local mom Shannon Fisher gets crafty with some winter-inspired projects. Photos by Shannon Fisher Photography
OUR STATE MAY not get much snow and ice, but we can still celebrate winter with some fun crafts!
Ice Painting Toddlers are known to love painting just for the fun of the activity. Painting on ice is a great way to allow them to paint over and over without the stacks of paper, plus the cold ice makes it more exciting. Take a clear pie dish or any other clear dish you have. I used a square baking dish since my pie pan is blue. For every three cups of water it takes to fill the dish, add a half-cup of baking soda. My dish took six cups of water and one cup of baking soda. Stir until the baking soda is mixed through. This turns the water white, so you have a blank canvas to work on. Freeze at least 12 hours (we froze ours overnight). When we were ready to paint, I quickly rinsed the ice with cold water to wet it down and then let my kids and their friends go crazy with washable paint and brushes to create their own mix of colors. They loved creating designs and then rinsing the ice with cold water to start all over. If your child wants to save his or her work, take a photo so that they can keep the memory—ice is hard to frame, you know! We still have the ice block in the freezer and pull it out for quick and easy painting fun!
Snowflake Window Clings To create your own snowflake flurries, gather some wax paper, puffy paint, and a printed snowflake or a design of your own. Take the design and place it under the wax paper. Next, trace the outlines of the snowflake with the puffy paint. This works best when the lines all touch and are fairly thick. Our designs were about four inches by four inches to give room to make the paint lines thick enough. Allow to dry flat overnight, and then carefully peel the puffy paint away from the wax paper. Press against a window or add some string and use as an ornament. This was a great activity that took a little patience, but the end result was worth the time spent. The kids wanted to keep creating more to add to the windows for their own winter wonderland!

Snow Painting Using salt is a great way to make a painting look as if there are snowflakes in the background. Gather watercolor paint, paintbrushes and paper, and paint a blue background, using a little more water to make sure it’s wet and even. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle some salt on the paper and allow it to dry. This may take an hour or so depending on how wet the paper was. The salt should dissolve and leave little prints that look like snowflakes. As your art is drying, you can use construction paper to create a snowman or anything else you would like to glue to your snow scene. Kids come up with the cutest designs for snow paintings! I hope you had a happy New Year and enjoy creating these winter crafts! JANUARY 2015

IT’S ALMOST TIME for Super Bowl XLIX! It’s such an exciting time of the year, and with the Super Bowl being held in Arizona for the third time right here at the University of Phoenix Stadium, it’s hard not to feel part of all the excitement! Are you planning a Super Bowl get together this year? Planning one is easy and is all about the food! Here are some fun ideas for putting together your own Super Bowl party.
Super Bowl Essentials One of the most important elements of a Super Bowl party is actually watching the Super Bowl! This is the one time when watching TV at a party is encouraged. Make sure you have plenty of seating for your guests and another seating area for guests who aren’t as interested in the game.
Huddle Foods Plan on serving simple bite-size foods with lots of flavor that everyone will love. We stopped by Legends Bar and Grill in Anthem (3655 W. Anthem Way) for some tasty finger foods to serve at our party. Legends is a fun, high-energy restaurant that serves amazing food, features local Arizona sports teams, and has a great family atmosphere. We ordered our favorite traditional buffalo wings and sliders, as they are fan favorites at our parties. If you plan to make your own food for your get-together, I would recommend recipes that are quick and easy to make so that you can spend more time watching the game.
Field Goal Beverages The drinks you have at your party are just as important as the food. Plan on purchasing plenty of beverages and include beer, wine coolers, soda, and water. If you have guests that prefer wine, have a few bottles available for them.

Half Time Treats I have some huge football fans in my family! During the Super Bowl, the only time that I see them move from their seats is during half time. Why not prepare an easy dessert for the half time break? We purchased a fun Cardinals-themed football cake —if you have kids at your party, a few Super Bowl cupcakes are always a winner. We used these free party printables from Three Little Monkeys Studio. Have a great Super Bowl celebration!

DID YOU KNOW New Year resolutions date back more than 4,000 years ago to the ancient Babylonians. They observed New Year’s Day on March 23, and they celebrated by making resolutions to their gods to return something borrowed from their neighbors. Fast-forward to around B.C. 154, when the Romans declared Jan. 1 as the first day of the New Year. The Romans named the first month of the year after the Greek god Janus, who’s depicted with two faces, one facing front and one facing back, which allowed him to see backward and forward at the same time. On midnight on Dec. 31, the Romans were certain that Janus was looking back at the old year and forward into the New Year. Janus became a symbol for resolutions for the Romans, who looked for forgiveness from past transgressions from their enemies and looked to good fortune ahead.

Hopefully, I can make that happen in 2015. I’m also setting the bar higher for my real estate business. My goal is to foster new relationships within the community that will in turn grow my business!

New Year’s Resolutions Goals
Pastor David Bowen discusses ways to make 2015 the year you’ll stay on track. TOO OFTEN, people bought last year’s gifts with this year’s money. Beginning the New Year with old debt is not a good way to celebrate. It causes people to get to the point where they’re sick and tired of being sick and tired. So when do habits change? Better question, how do habits change? Retailers say more treadmills are sold in January than in all the other months combined. Two of the New Year’s resolutions have been the same ones for decades: losing weight and getting out of debt. Another common one is to help people and be more generous. Obviously, the beginning of a new year is an ideal time to make new plans to launch a new you—to make better choices and to improve your lifestyle. Yet people are afraid to commit to a commitment. Why? Everyone knows that New Year’s resolutions don’t last. You get off to a flying start, but by the end of the first month, you feel like you have failed, which means you feel worse at the end of the month than you did when the month started. About 45 percent of Americans make New Year resolutions. Around 75 percent maintain their resolutions through the first week, but just 8 percent are successful in achieving their resolutions. Why so few? Maybe it’s because they are trying to go it alone. Let me suggest that you don’t make resolutions but set goals instead— small ones at first. Set yourself up to succeed, not to fail. Then, incorporate your family into the equation. Want to get out of debt? Place a family debt jar in your kitchen. Every time you want to go out to eat as a
family, stay home and put the money you would have spent going out into the debt jar. You’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll be further in the black. Want to lose weight? Take the kids to the park. Let them play, but make sure you walk to the park and walk home. You’ll be amazed how quickly you’ll be playing at the park with them! Be more generous in 2015. This will take the focus off yourself and place it on others. Have your kids look for ways to help those in need. Have a family game night playing board games, with the winner picking the next act of kindness. Set a goal of collecting food and delivering it to a local food bank. Foster an animal from a shelter. Sponsor a needy child in another country. Do a kind deed for a neighbor. The possibilities are endless, and doing them as a family will be priceless.
David Bowen has been married for 20 years and is the father of three girls. He has a local radio program and pastors Standing Stones Community Church. Let the hope of change be an encouragement. Let your New Year goals be a time of new bonding as a family—a time of setting and achieving small goals that turn into reaching long-term goals. This is not making resolutions that seem to fizzle out—it’s changing habits and creating a new lifestyle. Resolution means “the act of finding an answer or solution to a conflict or problem.” Let 2015 be the year when past conflicts and old problems are solved— for good!

It helps keep your arteries healthy, manages bloodsugar levels, and can help lower cholesterol. So, try some in your coffee, in your oatmeal, or sprinkled on a sweet potato. Turmeric: A staple of Indian cooking, this colorful spice can help reduce inflammation in arthritis patients and block some forms of cancer. For your first taste, try it in a mild curry dish, couscous, or as a seasoning for acorn squash. Ginger: Ginger has long been used as a healing spice, helping everything from morning sickness to heartburn to migraine relief. This noteworthy spice can add just the right amount of bite to Asian dishes, marinades, and salad dressings. Oregano: Quite the comfort spice and used in almost every Italian recipe from spaghetti to focaccia, oregano is good for much more than a pizza topping. It’s antibacterial and full of antioxidants, so help yourself to another sprinkle. Chili Peppers: If you are not afraid of a little heat, pile on the extra chili pepper with every meal. The spicier the pepper, the more capsaicin you’ll find. This ingredient can aid in pain relief and heart health, and it also can fight prostate cancer and ulcers.

OldFashioned Chicken Soup
The Desert Baroness divulges the recipe for a soup worth gushing about. Photos by Lydia O’Connor
WHEN THE NEW Year rolls around, I always try to get those extra pounds that I gained over the holidays off as soon as possible. Some years, it takes a little longer and requires more effort than others—ugh! One of my favorite ways to get back in shape is by hiking our amazing local trails and eating lighter foods. A few years ago, I gave my husband a “Year’s Worth of Hikes” package as a birthday gift. I picked out and mapped all the trails and made them each into monthly “date hikes,” which included a meal or a picnic afterward. We had so much fun that year hiking and eating healthy meals that the weight just dropped right off without even trying. Yay! I love it when you can get in shape and have fun at the same time. One of our favorite hikes in the North Phoenix area is the Go John trail at Cave Creek Regional Park, off Carefree Highway. We’ve taken friends and family (and our crazy dogs) on this hike. The trail is a moderate sixmile loop with some challenging terrain, and it provides great views of Cave Creek along the path. Start in the morning and be back by lunchtime! Check out more local hiking trails at maricopa.gov/parks. When we go hiking, I always like to have something ready to eat when we get home because we’re usually starving by the end of our hike. I love soup, especially in the winter months. I call it my “winter salad.” Soups are so nutritious, and I love that you can just let them simmer on the stove or in a slow cooker and go do something else. Two of my favorite soup recipes are my mom’s Old Fashioned Chicken Soup, and for you tomato

Old-Fashioned Chicken Soup (with Farina Dumplings) Soup 2 Tbs. extra-light olive oil or canola oil 1 large yellow onion, diced 1 small clove garlic, minced 3 chicken breasts (cubed approx. ¾"–1"), patted dry 3 stalks celery, diced 6 medium carrots cut into chunks (approx. ½") 2 boxes (32 oz. each) chicken broth 1 chicken-flavor bouillon cube 1 tsp. black pepper ½ tsp. parsley flakes 1 tsp. dried marjoram leaves 1 cup water (to add at the end when cooking dumplings—omit if just making the soup) For Dumplings 2 large eggs ¾ cup plus 2 Tbs. farina (Cream of Wheat) 2–3 tsp. water In a stockpot, heat oil on medium-high heat. When oil is hot, add yellow onions, stirring occasionally until translucent. Add garlic and cook for another minute. Add chicken and sauté until no longer pink and slightly browned. Add one box of chicken broth, celery, and carrots. Bring to rolling boil. Skim off foam using a spoon or a mesh strainer. Add pepper, parsley flakes, and marjoram along with half the remaining stock and chicken bouillon. Cover and simmer on medium-low for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally until vegetables are tender. Meanwhile, about 15 minutes before soup is finished cooking, prepare dumpling mixture. In a small bowl, crack two eggs and gradually stir in farina. Add water and mix well. Let stand at room temperature for about 15 minutes. When vegetables are soft, add remaining stock plus 1 cup water (omit adding water if not making dumplings). Bring to a slight rolling boil. Drop dumplings by small half-soup-spoonfuls into soup. Cook on medium-low with lid on for 20–25 minutes until dumplings have doubled in size and are soft in the center. Makes 8 servings. Note: To make in a slow cooker: After sautéing onion, garlic, and chicken mixture, move to slow cooker. Add remaining ingredients and cook on low 3 to 4 hours. When ready to make dumplings, turn slow cooker to high and then follow above instructions for cooking them.
soup lovers out there, my recipe for Delicious Tomato Soup. The tomato soup can be made ahead of time, frozen, and later warmed up in the microwave when you get home—perfect for those quick weeknight dinners. Find my recipe for Delicious Tomato Soup as well as other great soup recipes and slow-cooker favorites on my blog. Before I go any further, I’ve got to tell you about my mom’s chicken soup. My mom, who will turn 91 this month, has made this soup for as long as I can remember—I grew up on it. It’s made with chunks of carrots and celery and finished by cooking homemade dumplings in the broth. Oh gosh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it! The secret to its great flavor is sautéing the onions and garlic and lightly browning the chicken before adding the other ingredients. I’ve made this soup for over 30 years for family and friends and winter dinner parties—it’s always a hit! I don’t even need to measure the ingredients anymore—I just start chopping and mixing, and a few hours later, there’s a masterpiece of soup awaiting a hungry crowd. Make it…soon!

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE FLAVORS OF MANY SOUPS IMPROVE WITH AGE? SO MAKE THEM AHEAD OF TIME—YUM! • Cool soup quickly for storing by placing stockpot in a sink filled with cold water. • Freeze in individual serving containers for one month, and enjoy by reheating in the microwave!

Four Simple Steps to Becoming Happy
• Focus on the Positive: If you have only five minutes a day to dedicate to becoming a happier person, here’s a great way to spend it. Each night before going to bed, write down five things for which you feel grateful. As you write your list, take a moment to reflect on each item. • Cope Effectively with the Negative: Don’t wait until you have no more suffering before allowing yourself to be happy. Accept that negative experiences are a part of every life. • Develop Strong Relationships: No matter how much we may enjoy and need our time alone, the fact remains that we are an intensely social species and that meaningful connections with other people are essential to happiness. • Pursue Meaningful Goals: Goals focus and motivate us. They increase our resilience by giving us reasons to keep going following setbacks. And they give us a highly gratifying sense of purpose, forward motion, and meaning.

better | BEAUTY normal number of platelets and is called platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. How long will the results last? Some patients will see optimal results with one treatment. Others, especially older patients, may want to receive two to three treatments each year. Is there any pain with the treatment? Most providers apply medical-grade numbing cream to prep the skin prior to the treatment. Most clients report little to zero discomfort. Really! Who is a good candidate for the PRPEN and PRP? • All Skin Types
Micro-Needling
Local beauty expert Jacqueline Starr-Hubert on a beauty procedure that is generating buzz. LET’S FACE IT, not everyone is a good candidate for laser treatments, and of course, there are those of you who are downright terrified to have laser procedures or just don’t have a lot of time to heal afterward. I’m happy to tell you that there’s a treatment just for you and that it offers great results! It comes in the form of a tool as small as a marker pen, and the downtime (the industry term used to measure the healing period) is minimal. The process is called PRP micro-needling, and it uses our bodies’ own plasma. The needling device is invaluable for the reduction of scars, stretch marks, wrinkles, and some melisma and does all-around skin rejuvenation. How, you ask? Here’s the short version: The tiny micro-needles in this small pen help trigger your body to make new collagen and elastin fibers, thus refreshing your skin and making it look and feel thicker and younger with minimal downtime. In many cases, the improvement appears very quickly—as early as the same day or in a couple of days.

What is micro-needling, and how is it performed? Micro-needling is a type of controlled, painless physical injury that is performed on the skin in order to trigger a healing process. The process utilizes a pen-like device called a PRPEN, which is equipped with very fine needles that are used to create hundreds of tiny channels in the skin. This first step injures the skin in order to provoke a healing cascade. In order to help speed and intensify the repair and rejuvenation of your skin, we inject and apply your own processed serum plasma (PRP) to the skin. What is PRP? PRP is a natural product created by your own body. A small amount of your blood is drawn and placed in a sterile tube that’s spun down in a centrifuge to separate the different components of the blood. Red and white blood cells are separated from the platelets and the plasma (the clear fluid), which now contains a higher-than-
Where is the treatment highly effective? • General skin rejuvenation • Scar reduction • Stretch marks • Wrinkles • Pigmentation (not all cases) • Melasma (not all cases) • Thin skin • Aging in the eye area • Vertical lines around the lip • Neck (Saggy flesh) • Acne damage • Large pores • Broken capillaries
Jacqueline Starr-Hubert, ME, MLT, is a medical esthetician/laser technician and makeup artist, she works at Bellina Medspa.
How is the plasma obtained? While you’re waiting for the numbing cream to work, a tube of your blood is drawn and the red blood cells are separated from the serum-containing platelets, as described above. How is the plasma administered? The plasma is gently applied to the surface of the face (no needles are involved), and the micro-needling device is carefully used over the entire area of the face. The device is pushing the plasma into the tissue, causing an incredible healing reaction. How much time does the procedure take? The office procedure takes about an hour, and downtime is typically three to four days, depending on multiple factors that will be discussed during a good consultation. How much does micro-needling with PRP and without PRP cost? The average cost for micro-needling without PRP is $400 to $500. PRP micro-needling averages $600 to $1,500.

WA R N I N G Don’t be fooled by gimmicky TV home products promising medical-grade micro-needling results. These products are no match for the medical-grade products being done by a trained professional. In some cases, more harm than good can be done.
The aesthetic industry is packed with energy-based devices that provide simple treatments and results that patients appreciate. However, a new micro-needling device, backed by years of research, has proven itself safe, effective, and capable of delivering results that rival more aggressive modalities at a fraction of the cost. It was time that something easier, more available to everyone, and affordable was created. I’m a tough gal to impress. I’ve seen so many one-hit wonders flow through this industry, and I’m always cautious to recommend without a proven track record of results. I’m happy to say that micro-needling with or without PRP has provided amazing results for many, and I believe it will become a lifer in the field of beauty. Go to your trusted professional and request a consult. At Bellina Med Spa, I do many of these procedures daily and am always amazed at the follow-up results that I see.

Ride the (Hair) Wave!
Local stylist Martin Weston invites you to take a dip into the latest hair trends. A YEAR AGO, I invited you to be fearless with your hair during 2014. How’d you do with that invitation? Did you resolve to trust your hairstylist to guide you toward what was best with your hair type, or did you stay with what was safe and familiar? While others were riding the crest of the wave of all that’s trendy, were you watching from the safety of the shore, your nose pressed into the latest hair magazine and wishing for the courage to step into the waters with them? Were your resolutions for 2014 to grow your hair out, cut it off, color it for the first time, or simply let it go natural? Sometimes, taking a step into the unknown waters of the beauty world can be terrifying, causing you to rush back to the safety of familiarity. However, in 2015 if you’ve decided to be resolute about venturing past the kneedeep waters with your hair, you’ll discover a freedom you won’t experience by sitting on shore.
Ombre—let’s get your feet wet The Ombre has dominated the runways for a few years now, and it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon. Designed with darker roots and dramatic lighter ends, the beautifully contrasted Ombre is a technique that can change your look instantly. The lighter color is applied toward the last few inches of the hair, giving the illusion that your color has grown out. While many love the tidal wave of drama created from the high contrast of colors, others prefer to ride a safer ankle slop with subtle gradation of tones that look more natural. Gorgeous color combinations such as rich golden roots with light caramel ends or chestnut roots
with honey ends are more desirable. Interestingly, the newest trend with Ombre is achieved by opting for colors that are more exotic and unexpected. Contrast black roots with jade ends or brick-red roots with tangerine ends. How about eggplant with delicate lavender ends? Any contrast in color can be used to create a stunning Ombre effect, whether it’s edgy or subdued.

Sombre—Riding the Wave For those who think the Ombre is too drastic with its contrast of color, perhaps the more natural Sombre is the wave you’ll be catching. Similar to the Ombre but more wearable, the low-maintenance Sombre begins with a darker root but graduates into the lighter tones just a few inches from the roots. By creating a soft fade from dark into light, the Sombre prevents highlights from taking over your head. Contrary to the Ombre, which favors darker colors, this is a perfect technique for any color of hair whether you’re a redhead, a blonde, or a brunette. The lighter color is applied around the face instead of concentrating it predominantly toward the ends. Ribbons of darker color blend with the cascading lighter tones and, unlike the Ombre, never looks quite grown out. This is a fantastic way to bring summer into winter hair with its seamless transition of dimensional tones.
Who wears it? Well, who doesn’t? The list of celebrities who’ve entrusted their gorgeous hair to this technique is too long to mention, but here are a few: Sofia Vergara, Kelly Rowland, Minka Kelly, Lily Collins, Olivia Wilde, Jessica Alba, Lauren Conrad, and Lea Michele. Can you see yourself riding the crest of the wave with them?
Come on in the water! Changing your hairstyle can mean embracing a different side of your personality. Sometimes, it’s hard-edged and funky and sometimes, it’s subtle and precocious, but it’s always an adventure. What are you resolving to do in the next 12 months of 2015? Embrace the changes you’ll find within yourself! Are you ready to get wet? Let’s jump in!
A hairstylist, a salon educator, and an artist, Martin Weston sees artistry everywhere. After working in the beauty industry for 30 years, he’ s still passionate about creating amazing looks for his clients. 44 || 85085MAGAZINE.com || JANUARY 2015
