EISENHOWER PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT 4613 N. Oketo Avenue Harwood Heights, IL 60706

An Invitation from the Director 2013 marks Eisenhower Public Library’s 40th Anniversary and you are invited to our year-long celebration of this special event. Over the last forty years, the Library and the community have gone through many changes. Fred Donnelly, the first director, started the Library at Parkway Towers in 1972 and relocated it to the CANTOS sheet metal factory in 1974. I started working at the Eisenhower Public Library back in December 1975. I drove the bookmobile throughout the villages of Norridge and Harwood Heights until June 1976. After bookmobile service was ended, I became Head of Reference Services. In February of 1979, I was appointed the Library Director. Susan Biskup served as director from 1976 to 1979. We became an automated library in 1975 and had an on-line computer catalog in 1984, one of the first libraries in the state to offer this service. Eisenhower Public Library District has been on the cutting edge of library technology for 40 years. This is essential for providing materials to our patrons accurately, swiftly and dependably. Service to our community is the backbone of the Library. We passed the Building Referendum in 2003, broke ground for the new facility in 2006, and had our grand opening for the new building in January 2008. Many feared that having a larger library might diminish our service and our personal touch. This has not occurred. In fact, Eisenhower has become an even more important community center, offering computer access, study rooms, public meeting spaces, and enlightening programs to the nearly 2,000 visitors who pass through our doors on an average day. Over the course of this coming year, we will be celebrating all of the changes that have taken place at the Library and in the community. We will take a look at the history of the area, create a community time line, display photos, celebrate our volunteers, offer a variety of programs tied to our One Book, One Community book choice The War of the Worlds, and so much more. We are very excited to have Alex Ross, world-renowned comic book artist and creator of the artwork for the credits of several Spider-Man movies, designing an exclusive dust jacket for our book. We plan to reveal his artwork at our Anniversary Gala on Friday, March 1st, 2013. Please plan to join us for this special evening. This is your personal invitation to a year of anniversary programming. Take a look through this events planner, keep it on your fridge, and mark your calendars with the events that interest you, because we want you to celebrate our 40th with us! Keep an eye out for more details in upcoming newsletters and on our website and facebook page. Thank you for 40 Years of Community. I hope to see you at the Gala and at many of the programs taking place this year.
