WRITING IN THE MARGINS This year’s summer reading theme is Reading Takes You Everywhere. I’d like to share with you how reading – and listening – helped me discover my mother’s country. My mother was born in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In 1960, it was clear that my grandparents wanted their only child to leave the country, and so my mother joined the thousands of refugees that became the first wave of Cuban exiles. My mother made her way to the Midwest where she met and married my father. My name, Stacy Ann, is an Americanized version of my great–grandmother’s name, Anastasia. Eventually my mother brought her parents here. My grandfather would sing “Guantanamera,” to me, a beloved Cuban song that incorporates the poetry of Cuban writer José Martí. As I grew up, I became enamored of the idea of Cuba. When I asked my mother or my grandparents about it, sometimes they would cry, remembering how it was and knowing what it had become. Eventually, I became aware of the presence of Cuba outside the insular world of my family. I discovered Hemingway. I listened to Celia Cruz and Ibrahim Ferrer. As I got older, I read books such as The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love and Dreaming in Cuban. My mother asked about what I was reading and it opened up a dialogue about her experiences. She explained that she would always love Cuba, but that she was also devoted to her adopted country. When I played the music, she and my grandmother would sing and dance with me. They told me about the big bands that would play in the nightclubs in Guantanamo Bay and about my mother’s uncle who was a bandleader. There were still tears, but there was also laughter. Literature and music help us express our feelings, our ideas, and they help us document our experiences. In addition to reading books for this year’s reading program, we invite you to delve into our music collection. Reading helps us understand our fellow humans. Listening is one of the most compassionate things we can do for each other. This summer, let’s explore these things together.

WELCOME TO THE NEW 19 Eisenhower is a member of SWAN, an organization of libraries sharing collections of books, music, movies, and more. This May, we welcomed 19 new libraries into the organization. That means, when you’re looking for a book, movie, or video game, you now have nearly 100 library collections, millions of items, at your disposal.
Interlibrary Loan If we do not currently have what you are looking for on our shelves at Eisenhower, we can request delivery from another SWAN library. Though not guaranteed, delivery usually takes about 7–10 days. You’ll be called, texted, or emailed when your materials arrive and then have a week to pick them up. You can search the library catalog and place holds at our website, eisenhowerlibrary.org. You’re also welcome to call us at 708-867-7828 for help with placing holds. Of course, we also love to see you in person, so stop by the library and a librarian will happily help you find an item or place a hold.
Illinois–Wide Loans In the event that your materials are unavailable from any SWAN partner library, we may be able to request the item from another library within Illinois. Any in– state (but out of SWAN) requests will take at least two weeks to deliver. This service is available only to residents of Norridge and Harwood Heights.
Out–of–State Loans If your materials are unavailable from any Illinois libraries, we may be able to borrow the item from a library outside of Illinois.

The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin
Recommended by Julie
If you could find out when you were going to die, would you? This family saga begins with the children of New York’s Gold family visiting a fortune teller. One by one, they enter her apartment and find out the exact date they will die. Is this a curse or a gift? Or does it become a self–fulfilling prophecy? The book follows each sibling in the order of their predicted deaths. How does knowing when they will die impact the way they live their lives? Does the knowledge of their death change the choices they make? Each character gets their own story, which we know comes to an end. The journey to each of those ends makes for interesting reading.
This service, available only to residents of Norridge and Harwood Heights, costs $5.00 per item plus any charges for overdue, lost, or damaged items as determined by the lending library.

Beauty expert Lorraine Massey offers advice for maintaining gorgeous texture and color in her newest book. Beautiful photographs and testimonials of women who have never regretted their decision to go gray round out this inspiring handbook.
KIDS _______________ Dear Girl
DVD & BLU-RAY_________ Paddington 2 Recommended by Chris
The first Paddington Bear movie was a true surprise. Despite expectations of mediocrity, Paddington’s story of simple kindness and themes of acceptance won me over. In the sequel, Paddington Bear, now comfortably settled in with the Brown family, has found the perfect birthday gift for his Aunt in Darkest Peru: a vintage pop–up book featuring the sights of his new home in London. But, because the book also contains a treasure map, a villainous (and hilarious) actor, played by Hugh Grant, steals the book and frames Paddington, dooming him to a life in a prison.
Paddington 2 doubles down on the first movie’s sweetness. It’s a feel good film that really makes you feel good.
by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Paris Rosenthal Recommended by Mary Jo
I first noticed the sweet cover art. Then I saw that this book was written by one of my favorite children’s book authors, who recently died, with her young adult daughter. AKR was a favorite because she was a real person. I got to see her read, speak, and share joy a few times. She lived in Chicago. She will be missed. This book project must have preceded the “Me Too” movement of 2017 by many months but it offers a timeless girl empowerment message. Each page is a lyrical note or message to the Girl (Your girl? My girl?) about self-acceptance and self-love in the face of life’s challenges. One senses these are words of wisdom that Amy shared with Paris as she was raising her. The delightful art was digitally created by Holly Hatam, mixing cartoon-stylized humans with watercolor settings with clever touches of collage including a classic text and many girl-power historical images. This book would be enjoyed as a quiet and repeated lap sit with a Girl that you love, ages two to 32. It would also make a great gift for someone you love.
