WRITING IN THE MARGINS Every April we celebrate the many volunteers who donate their time and effort to the Eisenhower Public Library District. We have several avenues for volunteering. The Board of Trustees is a group of elected individuals who volunteer their time to set library policy, establish and oversee the budget, levy, and spending, and make decisions regarding upkeep of the building and grounds. A team of individual volunteers perform activities like helping put together program materials and other tasks that help our staff members focus on serving the public, facilitating programs, and developing our collection. The Friends of the Eisenhower Library is a 501(c)3 organization that raises money on behalf of the library to pay for wish-list items and programs. The Friends typically hold mini-book sales throughout the year and one large book sale each fall. For the first time this spring, the Friends of the Library is sponsoring a gala event to raise money for an update to Island Within A City, the local history book commissioned and published by the library in 1989. Our plan is to cover the 30 years of local history since the publication of this book and augment it with an oral history component. Community members will be invited to record short stories of their experiences living or working in the villages of Norridge and Harwood Heights. We will include the first 50 or so stories with the publication of the new book and make all of them available online. The first opportunity to tell your story will be at the Friends of the Library gala on April 6th. If you would like more information on Island Within A City and the gala, or if you’re interested in volunteering or joining the Friends please contact the library. We truly appreciate the time and effort that our volunteers give.

ISLAND WITHIN A CITY GALA Saturday, April 06, 7:00 - 11:00 PM A lot has happened since 1989 when we first published Island Within A City, a history of the Norridge-Harwood Heights area written by Thomas McGowen. So in recognition the book’s 30th anniversary, we’re planning a new edition, but we’ll need your help. On Saturday, April 6th, please join us for a fundraising gala. Hosted by the Friends of the Eisenhower Library, the gala will be your opportunity to experience the library after hours and tell your stories of life in the NorridgeHarwood Heights communities. Enjoy food and wine from restaurants reflecting the cultural diversity of our community. Record your family history and local anecdotes at oral history recording stations. Your stories will be available to listen to on the library’s website and some might be included in the updated book. Bring your historical photographs and documents to be scanned for your records and possible inclusion in Eisenhower’s local history collection. For fun, puzzle your way through Escape to the Island, an immersive escape room game made up of riddles and brainteasers, or follow clues throughout the library collection to complete a scavenger hunt. All of these activities, along with food and drink, are included with your $50.00 ticket. A $75.00 ticket will also include a preorder of the new edition of Island Within A City. As Joseph Patricelli, former President of the Eisenhower Library Board of Trustees said in the original book’s forward, “Ideas become realities through the efforts of people’s special interest and dedication.” With your interest and dedication, past, present, and future residents will come to better understand the history of our community.
Gala tickets are available to purchase at the Library Services Desk or online at eisenhowerlibrary.org/island

BOOKS ______________ Force of Nature by Jane Harper Recommended by Melissa

This time, Agent Falk and his new partner, Carmen Cooper investigate the disappearance of a hiker gone missing during a corporate retreat. Mister Miracle by Tom King & Mitch Gerads Recommended by Chris
In Jack Kirby’s 1960s comics, to seal a truce, the evil Darkseid sends his son Orion to live on New Genesis and Highfather sends his son Scott Free to live in the torturous fire pits of Apokolips. Scott escaped to Earth where he became a famous escape artist. The reboot of the series opens with a suicide attempt. Scott claims his obsession with escaping forced him to attempt the world’s greatest escape: from death itself. But in reality, Scott is suffering a breakdown. He’s married to the love of his life and he’s world-famous. So why isn’t he happy? Could it be because his father, the god of goodness, sent him to spend his childhood being tortured? Yeah, probably.
Blacklisted! by Larry Dane Brimner Recommended by Penny One of the worst things you could be during the Cold War in 1950s America was a Communist. At least that was the opinion of the House Un-American Activities Committee.

RECOMMENDATIONS Severance by Ling Ma Recommended by Marisa
Candace Chen is almost thirty and struggling through a break-up when Shen Fever hits New York City. Soon the subway is out, and her colleagues are disappearing. Is Candace the last unfevered person in New York? Will she notice? Severance tells a funny and unnerving story about the comforts we substitute for human connection. It’s also a post-apocalyptic survivor story populated by gentle zombies who crave routine, not brains. Finally, it’s a millennial’s immigrant story told by the deadpan and exhausted Candace as she moves forward, rootless.

DVD & BLU-RAY_________ The Mayo Clinic Recommended by Elias
In 1883, after a tornado killed thirtyseven people and injured hundreds of others, Dr. W.W. Mayo, a physician with his own practice, called on the assistance of Mother Alfred Moes and the Sisters of St. Francis to aid in the recovery efforts. Sometime later, Mother Alfred had a vision showing her order founding a hospital, with Dr. Mayo at the head. Six years and over $40,000 later, a handshake agreement between the two parties would develop into one of the leading medical institutions in the world. As he did in The Vietnam War, documentarian Ken Burns intercuts his narrative between the history of the Clinic and interviews with recent patients to highlight Mayo’s goal of developing a culture of “medical democracy” where information is shared, where physicians can learn from one another, and where the latest breakthroughs are applied to improve the quality of care for patients.

It’s 1957, space exploration is starting, the civil rights movement is growing. With all of this change shouldn’t Little League let girls play baseball?
