Coffee with the Director Tuesdays, March 20, April 24 & May 22, 5:00–6:00 PM

Stop in at Fannie’s Cafe, grab a free cup of coffee, and share your thoughts, comments, and suggestions with director Stacy Wittmann.

It is true though. Ten years ago we opened the doors to this building on a cold Sunday afternoon in January and watched as members of our community lined the streets from the old building to the new, passing a book from the collection, handto-hand, to its new home. We celebrated all the possibilities the new space brought, and then we got to work. A lot has changed in ten years. We now offer an entire curriculum of computer classes, a host of Workshop programs, digital books and magazines, and an expanded collection of online databases. Our staff members take our book bike to visit our area schools and parks. We offer Art Institute passes, umbrellas for people to check out, and our Eisenhower Exclusives collection for our residents. We have a team of highly trained technology clerks who assist patrons of all ages with their technology needs. Some things, however, have not changed. Ten years ago we offered one-on-one computer help and instruction. We still do that every single day. Ten years ago we offered exceptional reference service from professionals who were empathetic and respectful of every person and every question. We still do that each day, too. Ten years ago we offered book discussion groups, bus trips, storytimes, and engaging topical programming. We still do all of that. As much as we work each year to grow and improve, we also work hard to hold on to the things we know work for you, things that let you know we appreciate you, and that you have let us know that we do well. As we look forward to the next decade and beyond, my pledge to you is that we will continue to look for ways to be better, be innovative, be creative, and to help you be those things as well, but without losing the core of what makes us who we are and what makes us valuable to you.

BOOKS ______________ White Houses

by Amy Bloom recommended by Marisa Journalist Lorena “Hick” Hickok gave up the Eleanor Roosevelt beat in 1933 to document the Great Depression for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. She did not give up Eleanor Roosevelt. Instead, she moved into the White House to serve as “First Friend.” In White Houses, Amy Bloom imagines that friendship as a passionate indulgence set against the austere war years. Bloom delivers presidential gossip in a well-rendered historical setting, as well as a love story that both lifts and twists the heart.

The Perfect Nanny

by Leila Slimani Recommended by Melissa The next Gone Girl? Seems as if every suspense novel that comes out is touted as the next Gone Girl, but nothing ever is. Leila Slimani’s new novel is a perfectly wrought, taut piece of psychological fiction that never fails apart. I picked up the slim book as a fast read since it’s only 250 pages long but soon slowed down in order to savor the elegance of the writing. It’s a horror story, there’s no doubt about that. The first sentence is “The baby is dead.” But, how we get there is a long journey through the tangled mind of The Perfect Nanny.

RECOMMENDATIONS The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen Recommended by Julie

In this tense psychological thriller, we meet Vanessa, the ex-wife, and Nellie, the wife-to-be. Each tells her story in alternating chapters, but it is not immediately clear which is the “wife between.” Do we believe what they are telling us? Vanessa, it appears, is an unreliable narrator with a possible alcohol problem. As the story unfolds, we question what we know about husband Richard, and halfway through the book a plot twist makes you question everything you have read before. Who is telling the truth, and who can we trust? Plenty of plot twists will have you eagerly turning the pages to find out.

KIDS _______________ My Very Own Space

DVD & BLU-RAY_________ Brigsby Bear Recommended by Chris

Living in a post-apocalyptic underground bunker isn’t so bad when you have an infinite number of episodes of your favorite TV show to watch. At least that’s what James thinks. Then he’s released from captivity and finds out his whole life has been a lie. Now an innocent in the outside world, James longs for the comfort offered by the bunker-only kid’s show Brigsby Bear Adventures. With help from his newfound family and friends, James’ attempt at filming a concluding chapter of Brigsby could free him from his past and provide him a connection to the real world.

Brigsby Bear is a movie like you’ve never seen. Funny, sad, and sometimes weird, it plays as a testament to the possibility that pulp culture fandom can bring out the best in us.
