Coffee with the Director Tuesdays, September 25, October 23 & November 20, 5:00–6:00 PM

Stop in at Fannie’s Cafe, grab a free cup of coffee, and share your thoughts, comments, and suggestions with director Stacy Wittmann.

These are just a few ways we show our appreciation, and we know from the enthusiasm of veterans, active military members, and their families that our patrons enjoy them and are touched by them. Of course, there are more ways we can help and show our appreciation throughout the year. Homes for Our Troops and Building Homes for Heroes are both organizations that build houses for injured veterans, mortgage-free. Both get 4-star ratings on Charity Navigator. www.hfotusa.org. www.buildinghomesforheroes.org. Volunteer with or donate to the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans. nchv.org. Puppies Behind Bars trains inmates to raise puppies to be service dogs for wounded veterans and first responders. You can host a fundraiser, sponsor a puppy, or make a donation. Gets a 4-star rating on Charity Navigator. puppiesbehindbars.com. Sign up to drive a veteran to medical appointments. You can apply to be a volunteer at www.volunteer.va.gov/VolTransNetwork.asp. Knit or crochet a scarf for a veteran. Knit Your Bit from the National World War II Museum has distributed over 50,000 scarves across the country. Eisenhower’s Knitting Circle participates. www.nationalww2museum.org/programs/knit-your-bit. In last season’s newsletter, I said that one of the most compassionate things we can do is listen. The Veterans History Project out of the Library of Congress gives us an opportunity to do that for our veterans while contributing to our country’s historical record. This project collects firsthand interviews, narratives, and historical documents of Veterans. www.loc.gov/vets/vets-questions.html. Please ask us for more information about these and other options. There so many ways to show our veterans that we appreciate their service.

BOOKS ______________ Everything Here Is Beautiful by Mira T. Lee Recommended by Melissa

Freedom takes many forms in Mira T. Lee’s debut novel. Miranda’s pregnant mother was an immigrant from China when she journeyed to America to give her family a better life. When she dies, Miranda assumes the role of mother to her younger sister, Lucia. The sisters are as different as night and day. Miranda attempts to care for Lucia as she struggles with the highs and lows of her mental illness. When Lucia gives birth to a daughter, her mental state reaches crisis mode. Told from several points-of-view, this is an addictive, haunting tale of love and loss. I think of this as a New York story, but the journey spans the world.

Noir by Christopher Moore Recommended by Marisa

Christopher Moore returns to San Francisco with Noir, a novel satirizing the titular genre. Set in 1947, foulmouthed Sammy “Two Toes” Tiffin is tending bar when a beautiful, mysterious woman crash lands in his life. Soon Sammy is in love, on the make (with a scheme involving a black mamba snake,) and on the run from the local police and a bevy of special federal agents. Fans of Moore’s graphic language, bantering characters, and madcap plots won’t be disappointed.

Young Adult__________ Some books arriving this fall: Ignite the Stars by Maura Milan, Dare You to Lie by Amber Lynn Natusch, Meet the Sky by McCall Hoyle, Kiss Me in Paris by Catherine Rider, Dream Country by Shannon Gibney.

RECOMMENDATIONS Gods of Howl Mountain by Taylor Brown

Recommended by Dan

Howl Mountain, North Carolina is a place where people are “born hard.” Rory Docherty returns there after a tour in the Korean War and takes up as a whiskey runner. The story is chock-full of Appalachian folklore. The most well-documented is NASCAR’s roots in bootlegging, but there are also potion-making healers and snakehandling revivalists. Fans of Luis Alberto Urrea and Michael Ondaatje will enjoy Gods of Howl Mountain.

KIDS _______________ Be Prepared

DVD & BLU-RAY_________ A Quiet Place Recommended by Chris

I always thought the old saying that “children should be seen and not heard” was mean-spirited and dismissive of kids. But in the thriller A Quiet Place, it couldn’t be more apt. John Krasinski and Emily Blunt are parents desperate to keep their children silent in a world where monsters that hunt by sound threaten their survival. By cutting out all unnecessary dialog and presenting only the barest essential plot points, A Quiet Pace becomes a stripped down horror film just as concerned with family drama as jump scares. It’s scary sure, but it’s also a thoughtful look at the lengths parent will go to to protect their children.

by Vera Brosgol

Recommended Victoria

“Camp. Like all my classmates went to. Except this camp, everyone would be Russian like me. I had to go. I had to go.” When a slumber party doesn’t go quite right, 9-year-old Vera realizes that she wants to find a place to fit in. (Don’t we all?) And that special place might be the Organization of Russian Razvedchiki in America, or ORRA for short, a Russian summer camp in New York. At ORRA, Vera learns what it means to live in the great outdoors (bugs, outside toilets, and a moose), make friends, lose them, and (of course) make them again. Fans of Raina Telgemeier will fall in love with this semi-autobiographical graphic novel. Clean paneled lines colored in browns and greens mimic outdoor camp life and perfectly complement the honest and funny story. Recommended for readers who are in upper-level elementary through middle school grades. Set up camp with Be Prepared at our library!

Speak Easy Speak Love by McKelle George Recommended by Penny If you’ve ever wished you’d been born in time to get the secret password and sneak into a speakeasy; if you love Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing; if you wish you’d seen the Spirit of St Louis take off and head for France, this is your book. Meet Hero, Prince, Benedict, Beatrice, John and Maggie, six teens in charge of a rundown family speakeasy in upstate New York. Jazz, purloined liquor, dangerous gangs, missed connections, and love.
