BOOKS ______________ Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe Recommended by Dan A 38-year-old widowed mother of ten went missing from her apartment in 1972. Everyone knew the IRA had taken her as a suspected informer. No one said anything. Patrick Keefe went to find out why in this non-fiction thriller. Fans of Killers of the Flower Moon and In Cold Blood will like Say Nothing.
Normal People by Sally Rooney Recommended by Marisa At home, Connell’s mother is Marianne’s maid. At school, Connell is a popular athlete while Marianne is a pariah. They fall for each other anyway, loving and hurting each other in equal measure. Everything changes in college, where Marianne makes friends easily and Connell can’t quite fit in. Yet the intimacy born from revealing everything to one another—all their most hopeful and shameful parts—binds them. Sally Rooney elevates a teenage romance into a story of power and psychological trauma, never losing sight of their scarred but sweet love, in this engaging novel.
The Salt Line by Holly Goddard Jones Recommended by Melissa I have acarophobia (fear of tiny bugs), so I’m trying to figure out why I couldn’t put down this novel in which humanity’s common enemy is the virus-carrying miner tick. In the near future, the U.S. has been divided into Zones. A giant, vibrating Wall separates the safe zones from the tick-infected. When a group of rich adventure seekers heads out on a wilderness tour to see what remains of nature, what could go wrong?

RECOMMENDATIONS Woodcraft by Barn the Spoon
DVD & BLU-RAY_________ Maria by Callas
Recommended by Molly
Even if you never end up crafting with wood, Woodcraft is one of those books that gets you excited about the possibilities. The book starts out exploring how to think about sustainable wood as a resource, the best part of the tree for different projects, and then dives right into hand tool projects, including knifework, axework, and turning. The book finishes up with a section on tools and tool maintenance, and on building woodworking hardware. As a DIY-er, I immediately geeked out over the homemade pole lathe (foot pedal powered!) and dreamed of making hand carved coffee bag clips, rustic pegs, and whisk brooms for all my loved ones.
KIDS ________________
Recommended by Elias
Completely through her own words, this new documentary explores the talent and drama that surrounded the life of Maria Callas, one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century. Through performances, interviews, home movies, private letters, and unpublished memoirs, we learn how Callas developed a reputation as a diva due to the strong-arm tactics of her manager and husband, Giovanni Battista Meneghini and how her on-and-off romance with Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis ended in devastation when he married the widowed Jacqueline Kennedy. It is, however, the full length performances of Callas’ most important arias that make this film a worthwhile document of her life and career; one that both long-term fans and opera neophytes should enjoy.
New Kid by Jerry Craft Recommended by Brooke Jordan Banks is in the 7th grade and loves drawing cartoons about his life. But rather than attending art school, his parents are sending him to a fancy private school renowned for its academics. As one of the few students of color, he soon finds himself lost between his neighborhood life in Washington Heights and his new upscale life at Riverdale Academy Day School. Author/illustrator Jerry Craft’s funny illustrations deftly contrast with the novel’s more sobering themes of bullying, income inequality, and microagressions. New Kid always maintains its sense of humor which is what makes it the perfect graphic novel for kids ages 10-14. Kids who like authors Raina Telgemeier or Jason Reynolds will love New Kid. It’s also a great read-a-like for other graphic novels such as Cardboard Kingdom by Chad Sell or Real Friends by Shannon Hale.
House of Salt and Shadows by Erin Craig Recommended by Penny The Twelve Dancing Princesses becomes a horror story in this sea-tossed retelling. The Thaumas sisters live on the edge of an island. Each time someone in the household dies, the body is returned to the water. Lately, the sisters have been “given to the brine” on a regular basis. To bring some cheer to their lives, the remaining girls escape to sumptuous midnight dances. But sisters keep dying and Annaleigh has horrific visions related to the nighttime parties. Who, or what, is cursing the Thaumas girls?
