RECOMMENDATIONS Serendipity’s Footsteps

The Soul of an Octopus

by Suzanne Nelson

by Sy Montgomery

Recommended by Penny

Recommended by Becca

It’s all about the shoes. Dalya is a shoemaker’s daughter living in Berlin in the 1930s. Dalya is also Jewish. She’s finally received permission to design her own shoes, a pair of pink heels with silken ribbons decorated with embroidered roses. She plans to wear them if she ever gets married. But after she’s forced into a concentration camp, shoes are the furthest thing from her mind. Survival is everything. Dalya does survive, but what about her shoes? Through a series of stories ranging across two continents and eighty years, Dayla’s shoes move from person to person, from place to place. Will they ever find their owner?

Bel Canto

by Ann Patchett Recommended by Melissa

When world-renowned soprano Roxane Coss travels to South America for a private performance, she finds herself held hostage along with an assortment of international dignitaries. Because there is no common language, the hostages and the kidnappers find complicated ways in which to communicate with each other. Ultimately, music becomes their universal language. As with all Ann Patchett novels, the final twists and turns cannot be anticipated.

Naturalist Sy Montgomery chronicles science’s growing recognition of the unique intelligence of the Giant Pacific Octopus. When kept in captivity, the octopus needs to be kept occupied through puzzles and other complex entertainment. If they become bored, they will stop at nothing to escape. They also have distinct personalities, recognizing, acknowledging, and even forming unusual friendships with humans. This book doesn’t view the octopus as a terrifying and unfamiliar monster, but celebrates its cleverness and curiosity.

I Am Chris Farley

now on DVD Recommended by Elias

Almost twenty years after his death, Chris Farley continues to live on through his work and the memories of fans, friends, and family. In I am Chris Farley, directors Brent Hodge and Derik Murray document Farley’s career, from his Midwestern childhood in Madison, Wisconsin, to his start with the famed Second City, and his rise to Saturday Night Live, stardom, and Hollywood. Interviews and comments from Dan Aykroyd, David Spade, Adam Sandler, Lorne Michaels, and more, make us wonder, with more than a hint of sadness, how else he would have made us laugh.

Judge This by Chip Kidd Recommended by Chris From binder clips to federal tax forms, Chip Kidd aims his graphic designer’s eye on everyday objects, judging the clarity or mysteriousness of their designs, sometimes describing ways in which confusing designs could be made clear and, often, providing examples of how the commonplace has inspired his own work as the designer of some of the most iconic book covers in publishing history.

Have you ever wondered how your favorite book made it to the shelves at Eisenhower? The first step is choosing the right book. Our librarians regularly read book reviews in industry publications like Library Journal, Kirkus, and Publisher’s Weekly to find out about upcoming releases. They’re always working to build a collection that is well rounded, has wide appeal, mixes nonfiction with popular novels, and meets the needs of our community. They also take your specific requests into account when deciding what to buy. Once our hypothetical book has been chosen, an order can be placed. We order books from

the same distributers that most bookstores use. Orders are entered into our catalog, so that you can place a hold on an upcoming book before it has even been released. As soon as it’s available, you’ll be notified that it’s ready for pickup. When a shipment including our book arrives at the library, it’s assigned a call number to help you find it on the shelves. Then, our Technical Services department makes sure it is properly labeled, barcoded, reinforced, and covered, if necessary. After it’s been through all this, the catalog is updated to let the world know our book is ready to go and it’s placed on the shelf, ready for you to enjoy.

Have you heard of a great book, movie, CD, or other item you’d like us to add to the collection? Let us know. Call 708-867-7828, visit www.eisenhowerlibrary.org/request, or tell a librarian when you’re at the library.

Our tech team repairs damaged books. They have years of experience and access to archival materials to help books live long lives. When returning a torn or otherwise damaged book, let us know. We’ll get it fixed up, ready to be enjoyed by its next borrower. Books damaged beyond repair, may require a replacement and processing fee.
