WRITING IN THE MARGINS Every summer, most libraries participate in a summer reading initiative. This summer, I want to share my own history with reading. It starts with my dad. My dad was born in 1929 in Nebraska. He joined the Navy when he was 18 and spent the next 20 years serving his country. He went to Korea and Vietnam. He credited the Navy with encouraging him in his pursuit of knowledge. My dad read to me every night from as far back as I can remember. He introduced me to Charlotte’s Web, The Lord of The Rings, and countless others. My parents bought me books every year for Christmas. I remember him taking me to the library for the first time. I remember the sound the plastic book cover made when he cracked the book open to read it to me that night. I grew older and started to read for myself. While he often said no to toys I asked for, he never said no to a book. He often asked me about the books I was reading, what I thought about characters, themes, and other things I might have overlooked. Years later, my mom gave me a box of papers. It was full of book reports I had written, with notes he had scribbled to me, saying how much he appreciated my thoughts and adding his own. Neither of my parents went to college, but it was their dream that I would. My dad didn’t get to go to my college graduation. He was too sick by that time. He didn’t get to see me receive my master’s degree. He had passed on two years before. I like to think that he somehow knows that I am spending my life in a profession surrounded by books and knowledge. I am lucky enough to have his words, inscribed in a book he gave to me one Christmas to read over and feel his love again: “The wings of flight are in your soul in your heart! Dare to dream & don’t lose the dream! All my love, Daddy”

BOOKS ______________ The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley by Hannah Tinti recommended by Chris Loo is growing into a teenager and her dad decides it’s time to settle down. After years of constant moves, Loo finds it difficult to fit in at school, deal with boys, and interact with her estranged grandmother. But most of all, she’s having a hard time understanding how her mother’s mysterious death is connected to the bullet scars that mark her father’s body. By alternating between Loo’s coming-of-age story and glimpses into her father’s violent past, The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley asks if the power of love is enough to change a life and turn a bad man into a good father.

Paper Lantern by Stuart Dybek Recommended by Melissa

That huge tsunami-like wave is the starting point for Stuart Dybek’s love story, Seiche. RECOMMENDATIONS Bold Baby Crochet by Dedri Uys Recommended by Molly This colorful book is full of unique and fun projects for baby gifts. It’s nice to see fully-crochet projects for non-knitters. Register for our Crochet-O-Rama class on page 4.
DVD & BLU-RAY_________ A Man Called Ove Recommended by Elias
Based on Fredrik Backman’s novel, A Man Called Ove is an Oscar-nominated Swedish film starring Rolf Lassgard as an elderly curmudgeon at odds with his work, his neighbors, and the world as a whole. He is determined to join his late wife in death, if only he could find the time. Not surprisingly, underneath Ove’s rough exterior lies a tragic past (shown to us in flashbacks throughout the film) that is well-presented by director Hannes Holm and does not feel heavy-handed. While the overall formula is similar to recent films such as St. Vincent, A Man Called Ove enables us to connect to the story and the characters in a way that feels authentic.
KIDS _______________ Family Game Night and Other Catastrophes by Mary E. Lambert
Recommended by Celeste
Piles of stuff fill Annabelle’s house. While the rest of the family avoids the issue, Annabelle struggles with the shame of the truth: her mother is a hoarder. When a pile of newspapers falls on Annabelle’s sister, family issues come to a head and her father walks out. Annabelle wants to run away just as far, but the struggle to fix their home has really just begun. This chapter book offers a glimpse into a messy life and is recommended for upper elementary readers intrigued by family drama.
MUSIC ______________ Feel Your Feelings Fool! by The Regrettes Recommended by Dan

Gaijin: American Prisoner of War by Matt Faulkner Recommended by Penny Fourteen year-old Koji lives in San Francisco with his Japanese immigrant dad and his white American mom. After Pearl Harbor is bombed, with his father stuck in Japan, San Francisco is no longer a great place to be. When the government comes to take him to a relocation camp in the middle of the desert, his mother won’t let him go alone. Koji’s mother is the only white person held in the camp and Koji soon learns that being half white in the camp is just as hard as being half Japanese on the streets of San Francisco.
