WRITING IN THE MARGINS As anyone who has lived in the Midwest knows, winter is a time of hibernation for residents. Nothing sounds better than cozying up with a blanket, a hot beverage, and enjoying a book or a movie, listening to a new album, or binge-watching your favorite show. The Eisenhower Library can certainly provide you with any of those things. We have an extensive collection of the newest books, movies, CDs, and streaming options for you. Remember, we even have a fireplace in the Quiet Room where you can peruse the latest mystery before setting off for home. We’d also like to offer an alternative to Midwest Hibernation. For the teens in our community, we are incredibly happy to debut our new state-of-the-art teen room. For those of you needing some quiet study space for homework and group projects or if you just want to avoid cabin fever, we have now doubled the number of our study rooms for your use and convenience. We are also set to debut The Workshop, our space dedicated to creating art, crafts, and a lot of other things we haven’t even thought of yet. We are featuring programming this winter that will help introduce you to the space. We’re starting small; we have a couple of sewing machines and an embroidery machine and will be doing a few other fun crafty things. In the future, we hope to add things like a 3D printer and a laser cutter. We know that it can be difficult to find the motivation to leave the warmth of home in the coming months. We hope you’ll throw on your warmest parka, some solid boots, and come visit us. We would love to show you all of the wonderful things we have to offer not just during winter, but all year long.
Stop in at Fannie’s Cafe, grab a free cup of coffee, and share your thoughts, comments, and suggestions with director Stacy Wittmann.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead Recommended by Dawn
Cora, a slave on a Georgia plantation, sees an opportunity to escape when Caesar, an educated slave new to the plantation, asks her to run away with him. As Cora moves from one place to another on her journey to freedom, she is relentlessly chased by a slave catcher named Ridgeway. While some of the book reads like other slave narratives, exposing the indignities and brutality of slavery, Whitehead adds a bit of fantasy, turning the metaphysical railroad into a physical one. Beautifully written, full of emotion, with plenty of action and suspense, this novel brings history to life and gives you plenty to think about.
I Contain Multitudes by Ed Yong
Recommended by Emily
We are not, it turns out, alone. Human beings (and all other animals, from dogs to squids to mosquitoes) harbor a world of microbes within and on us, ecosystems of symbionts that have partnered with all other earthly life from the moment that life began to emerge. The enthusiasm that popular science writer Ed Yong brings to his subject is palpable and infectious, his writing rich with both awe and humor. Carefully weaving decades of science into a coherent and fascinating whole, I Contain Multitudes reveals the wonder of our invisible worlds.

RECOMMENDATIONS Before the Fall
by Noah Hawley Recommended by Melissa A small plane, a foggy night, a group of people thrown together for a short flight. How random were the events leading up to the crash? You don’t want to start Noah Hawley’s new novel if you have places to go and things to do. It’s hard to put this one down before you reach the end.
Macbeth
on DVD & Blu-Ray Recommended by Elias The “Scottish Play” was back on the big screen this year, as a new film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Michael Fassbender stars in the title role, driven by prophecy (and the cunning Lady Macbeth, played by Marion Cotillard) to question his loyalty to the King of Scotland. This version of Macbeth is less polished than Polanski’s 1971 version and has more in common with Kurosawa’s 1985 adaptation, Ran. Everything from the acting, dialogue, combat scenes and even the landscape, is filmed in a much grittier manner. This, on occasion, may make the dialogue difficult to understand (fortunately, subtitles are available on DVD). Another solid adaptation of Shakespeare’s work.
YOUNG ADULT
KIDS Wolf Camp by Andrea Zuill
Recommended by Brittany
Homer believes that all dogs have a bit of wolf in them, so when he finds a flyer for Wolf Camp “Where every dog can live as a wolf for an entire week!” he jumps (and howls!) at the opportunity. He follows his people around until they relent and let him go to Wolf Camp. Guided by his wolf instructors, Fang and Grrr, Homer and the other domestic dogs are ready to howl, hunt, and sleep like real wolves! As with most wish-fulfillment tales, things aren’t all sunshine and rainbows as our leading pup imagined, and returning to domestic life might hold more reward than his initial call to the wild. Or will it?
Wolf Camp is a fun picture book read that will entertain children of all ages who have pets, especially dogs, at home.
Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies by Lindsay Ribar Recommended by Penny
Aspen Quick can take from you and you’ll never know. Too much to drink? Take someone’s sobriety. Want the girl? Touch her and take the memory of her boyfriend. The Quick family uses this talent to keep the cliff hanging over town from falling. Townspeople leave tokens by the May Tree and whenever Aspen’s grandmother says the cliff is cracking, tokens are chosen and things are taken from the owners until the cliff becomes stable. At least that’s what Aspen has been told. How much of that is true?
