WRITING IN THE MARGINS Spring brings a renewed sense of purpose. There is gardening to think about. There are home repairs to consider. Maybe it’s also time to start thinking about what we want to do with free time we might have this year.

Coffee with the Director Tuesdays, March 21, April 25 & May 23, 5:00–6:00 pm
National Volunteer Week was established in 1974 as a way to recognize and celebrate volunteers in our country. The Eisenhower Public Library District is especially fond of volunteers. Our elected Board of Trustees serve as volunteers. The Friends Of the Library is an organization made up of volunteers. Their only mission is to support the Eisenhower Public Library through fundraisers like book sales in order to provide us with things like exceptional programming, automated external defibrillators, our book bike, and other beautiful, innovative, and necessary items that we may not otherwise be able to offer the community without their assistance. We also have a team of volunteers who donate their time to help us prepare for programs, keep the library looking neat, and in other ways. We are grateful for every minute they give us. We are celebrating our volunteers and National Volunteer Week by offering you an opportunity to find the perfect volunteering fit through our annual Volunteer Fair on Saturday, April 1. Stop by from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM and speak with organizations in our community who would love to have your help with working on a variety of causes, such as senior care, human rights, environmental conservation, and animal welfare. It’s been another long winter, so let’s celebrate spring by coming together in our community to help make a difference. If you can’t make it on April 1, we’ll have resources available for you to find volunteer opportunities any time you want to stop in. We’re always here to help you.
Stop in at Fannie’s Cafe, grab a free cup of coffee, and share your thoughts, comments, and suggestions with director Stacy Wittmann.

Harmony by Carolyn Parkhurst Recommended by Melissa
How far would you go to save your child? Would you quit your job, sell your house, and move to an off-the-grid family camp run by a charismatic leader who purports to be an expert on curing special needs children? That is the question Carolyn Parkhurst asks in her new novel. The Hammond family is living a chaotic life. Teenage daughter Tilly is on the autism spectrum and having an increasingly difficult time adjusting to school life. As the family starts to spiral out of control, they see a flyer advertising the services of child development specialist Scott Bean. What do they have to lose?
Love Warrior by Glennon Doyle Melton
Recommended by Dawn
“Grief is love’s souvenir. It’s our proof that we once loved. Grief is the receipt we wave in the air that says to the world: Look! Love was once mine. I love well. Here is my proof that I paid the price.” Glennon Doyle Melton opens herself totally, revealing her thoughts, fears, addictions, hopes, mistakes, and struggles as she examines her life choices, her marriage, and herself in this new memoir. When her seemingly perfect marriage falls apart, we see her struggle to regain control of her life. A powerful spiritual journey!
Your Favorites Last fall and winter we asked for recommendations of your favorite books. Here are a few standouts. RECOMMENDATIONS Norse Mythology
by Neil Gaiman Recommended by Chris Fans of Marvel’s Thor will love Neil Gaiman’s novelistic retelling of northern Europe’s myths and legends. King Odin and his sons, Thor and Loki, are given new life through descriptions of their passions, strengths, and jealousies. With loads of facts drawn from real myths, Gaiman educates and entertains.
Ingrid Bergman in Her Own Words
on DVD & Blu-Ray Recommended by Elias From her simple beginnings in Stockholm and the devastating loss of her parents to her success in Hollywood, we follow Ingrid Bergman through her nomadic and complex life. We see the vicious criticism she faced when she left her husband and child to marry director Roberto Rossellini. We hear candid yet heartfelt memories from her children concerning her passion and her frequent absences from their lives. While she clearly lived for her work, she also saved, recorded, and documented every possible memory of her life for posterity. A collector of people and memories, she was restless yet determined until the end and left this world with no regrets.
YOUNG ADULT
KIDS Booked
by Kwame Alexander Recommended by Brittany
The stakes couldn’t be higher for Nick Hall when things get dicey with his best friend and beloved soccer team, the bullies at school won’t leave him alone, there’s a special girl he wants to impress, and his parents’ marriage is rocky at best. Will he dribble through his opponents or will the defense of life thwart his shot? Written by Newberry Medalist Kwame Alexander in his trademark verse, this novel is sure to be the golden goal for every reader willing to play. This book is highly suggested for readers in 3rd grade and up who enjoy soccer, poetry, and rap. Alexander’s books in verse are especially acclaimed by struggling or lower-than-gradelevel readers.
Unscripted Joss Byrd by Lygia Day Peñaflor Recommended by Penny
Joss is twelve and is making her third movie. This time she’s playing Norah, the sister in The Locals, the indie autobiography of her director. The film is a gritty thing about two kids with an abusive father and the method actor playing the lead role scares Joss to death. Her mother put a clause in Joss’ contract that says she won’t have to play suggestive scenes, but when Joss reads the latest rewrite she almost throws up. How much control does a kid actor have over her own life?

EBOOKS & MORE 2017 may be the year of the short story. Many of our most well regarded novelists have highly anticipated collections of short stories coming out this year. Look for collections from George Saunders, Roxane Gay, and Viet Than Nguyen, among others. We’re even having a conversation with short story writer Stuart Dybek on May 20. (See page 2) With an Eisenhower Library card and Media on Demand, our eBook lending service, you can read books by all these authors on your eReader, computer, tablet, or other mobile device for free. Media on Demand works with computers and laptops, Kindles, Nooks, and most other eReaders. Android, Apple, or Amazon device users can download the Overdrive or Kindle apps from your device’s app store. To get started, visit www.mediaondemand.org. Sign in by choosing Eisenhower as your library. Then, enter your library card number and PIN. Unless you changed it, your PIN is the last four digits of your phone number. Choose an available book and start reading. For guides on using Media on Demand and OverDrive visit the “Getting Started” section at www.help.overdrive.com. If you need assistance, give us a call at 708-867-7828 or drop by the library with your device. We’d be happy to help.
