WRITING IN THE MARGINS I am not ready to think about cold weather. The one thing that makes it better for me is yarn. I’m a knitter.
04 The Workshop
I wasn’t always a knitter. I have only been one for 13 years and a good one for 10. I tried learning several times before it finally stuck. Friends and neighbors attempted to teach me but nothing clicked. Here’s where you’re going to think this is a shameless library plug and it is, of course, but it’s also a true story.

I learned to knit from a book that I found in my library.
09 Kids World
What finally made me commit to really learning to knit was the story the author told in her introduction. She wrote about her grandmother teaching her to knit socks and that when her grandmother was passing, she said she couldn’t go because she had to keep knitting socks. The author told her grandmother that it was okay, she would knit the socks for her. This was such a moving tribute that I felt myself wanting to be a part of that tradition.

Coffee with the Director Tuesdays, September 26, October 24, November 21, 5:00–6:00 pm
Stop in at Fannie’s Cafe, grab a free cup of coffee, and share your thoughts, comments, and suggestions with director Stacy Wittmann.
Neighbors and friends couldn’t breach my knitting block, but that book did. Since then, I have made dozens of pairs of socks. I’ve knitted hats, sweaters (for humans and dogs), scarves, blankets, bags, gloves, and more. I found a community of people who love the process as much as I do. Once, I even went on a knitting retreat. This process of creating, of trial and error, of discovery, is what you can experience in our WorkShop. Aside from some programming, many of the traditional library activities are, by nature, solitary. What you can do in the WorkShop gives you the opportunity to explore in a space that is nurturing. You may see someone else doing something that will act as a springboard for an idea of your own. From the grain of an idea to the full realization of a concept, from child to adult, the Eisenhower Library is here for you.

BOOKS ______________ Quiet Until the Thaw by Alexandra Fuller recommended by Dan
If you were trying to find a book written by someone living in a yurt, I’ve found one for you. Alexandra Fuller tells us about two cousins raised by their grandmother on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. The story is told in a spare staccato style that works really well. The writing is beautiful and funny and Fuller seamlessly weaves in the devastation that U.S. policy has had on Native Americans. When these parts come up it feels like getting a sliver when you run your hand on polished wood. The book has inspired me to learn more about Native American culture.
The Wanderers
by Meg Howrey Recommended by Marisa Astronauts make unlikely wanderers: each step toward space is calculated for optimal outcome. Veteran astronauts Helen, Sergei, and Yoshi spend eighteen months in a simulated mission to Mars to prove they are worthy of making the real voyage. Under observation, the crew conducts the day-today operations of flying to Mars. Internally, they wrestle with two questions: What would you give to get back to the place you love the most? Is it worth that sacrifice if the people you love the most can’t follow? The book’s pacing fits the title, but those questions resonate with the reader after the mission is accomplished.
YOUNG ADULT__________ Arriving this fall: Wild Beauty by Anna-Marie McLemore, You Bring the Distant Near, by Mitali Perkins, Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo, The Ends of the World by Maggie Hall, and The Hearts We Sold by Emily Lloyd Jones.
www.eisenhowerlibrary.org - 08
RECOMMENDATIONS The Underworld by Kevin Canty Recommended by Melissa Kevin Canty’s new book is a fictionalized account of the 1972 silver mine fire at the Sunshine Mine in Idaho. Ninetyone miners died from carbon monoxide poisoning making it the seconddeadliest mining accident in U. S. history. The novel follows several characters as they try to deal with the disaster. It is a short book not bogged down in detail but focused on the human side of the tragedy.
KIDS _______________ Xo, Ox: A Love Story by Adam Rex
Recommended by Victoria
Ox loves Gazelle. Gazelle doesn’t quite feel the same way. Like at all. This adorable picture book is light-hearted and sweet as Ox writes to Gazelle, professing his love and admiration over and over again. He doesn’t seem fazed though when Gazelle shoots him down. Repeatedly. Actually, he seems to care for her more! The illustrations are simple watercolor drawings that are paired perfectly with the story. Kids in preschool through lower elementary grades would find this book charming (and their parents too.)
DVD & BLU-RAY_________ Bright Lights Recommended by Elias
The passing of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds last December shocked not only their legion of fans but the film industry as a whole. In Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, we enter their lives over a year and a half before their sudden deaths to witness the physical and mental costs of Hollywood careers, family drama, and hard living. By way of interviews, home movies, and news footage, we follow the two stars as they recount their lives: Debbie coming up through the studio system, her marriage to singer Eddie Fisher and the challenges she faced after he left the family for Elizabeth Taylor; Carrie’s childhood in a complicated family, her breakout role as Princess Leia, her work as a writer, as well as her struggles with bipolar disorder and substance abuse. Through it all, we see genuine love and affection between mother and daughter (who had been next door neighbors for decades), and, with the benefit of hindsight, hints of their declining health.
Truthers by Geoffrey Girard Recommended by Chris Katie never even thinks about 9/11. She was barely a year old when terrorist hijackers flew airliners into the World Trade Center. But when her father is institutionalized because of his belief that the attack was an inside job, Katie becomes drawn into the strange and scary world of conspiracy theorists. With respectful and careful footsteps, Truthers brings the reader into that world, too, leading to questions about patriotism, civic duty, and the effects belief can have on those around us.
