WRITING IN THE MARGINS Community. It’s what drives us every

day. We spent all of last year celebrating the fact that, in 1973, the people of Norridge and Harwood Heights decided that a public library was essential to their communities. We take that decision very seriously. 40 years later, what do we need to do in order to remain essential to you? A while ago, we conducted a survey asking you about library services, programs, hours and materials. You talked, and we listened. Here are some ways in which you’ll see us responding to what you told us. This year, we’re offering, “Sundays in the Summer.” You told us you love us so much that you are willing to visit us on Sundays, even during the summer. We would love to see you, too. If all goes well, we’ll consider making “Sundays in the Summer” permanent. You will see us more often out in the community, at places like the Norridge Farmer’s Market and the outdoor film festival we’re co-hosting with the Norridge Park District. We’ll also be visiting area businesses to offer our help with resources on management, market research, and other information. You will be able to download more eBooks, movies, audiobooks and music. By the end of the year, you will (hopefully) see a brand-new catalog allowing you to search what we have in the library, including digital resources, more easily. Don’t have an eReader? We’ll loan you one filled with the latest best sellers, and award winners. We’ll also offer more classes on iPads, mobile apps and Android tablets. We want our community members to know how important you are to us and how much we appreciate your support. We have started hosting “Coffee with the Director,” a monthly program offering you the opportunity to meet informally with me over a cup of coffee and share your thoughts. Comment cards can now be found throughout the library, too. We are committed to providing you the best in books, movies, games, programming, classes and customer service. Next time you need something, think of us. We’re here for you.

Book Discovery: What Do I Read Next? “MY BEST FRIEND IS THE PERSON WHO WILL GIVE ME A BOOK I HAVE NOT READ”

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

How do you use your library? Do you simply borrow the next book in your favorite series or that book you heard about on the morning news? Or do you use it as a place to discover new books and authors? Libraries have always been places where people discover new authors. Though your librarians are always willing and able to help you find the exact title you are looking for, there is so much more they can help you discover about books. Think of your librarians as book experts available to help you find reading materials to suit your tastes. Whether your child is trying to find something new after reading every Pete the Cat book, your teen wants to find more books similar to Divergent, or you want to discover a new mystery series or light-hearted beach read for yourself, Eisenhower is here for you. Your librarians have years of experience and many tools at their disposal to help match patrons with books that will suit them.

OTHER WAYS TO USE THE LIBRARY a

Read five books between June 9th and August 1st for your chance to win an honorary wild animal adoption. If you’re a winner, a donation will be made in your name to the World Wildlife Fund and you’ll receive a plush toy, an adoption certificate, a photo of your animal and a WWF tote bag. Special library challenges throughout the summer offer even more chances to win!

Our website is a great resource to help you discover new books, too. On the homepage, click on the Our Collection tab and, on the right, click Sites for Readers (eisenhowerlibrary.org/sitesforreaders). There you will find links to websites and databases to assist you in finding books that will meet your needs. If you’d like a more personalized list of reading recommendations from a librarian, you can get that through our website, too. Just look under the Our Collection tab and click on What Do I Read Next? (eisenhowerlibrary.org/nextread). Fill out the form listing books you have liked or disliked, and any additional consideratons about what you are looking for. A librarian will create a unique list of reading suggestions to match your tastes. When you want to discover something new, just come to the Eisenhower Library or visit our website.

RECOMMEN The Poisoner’s Handbook by Deborah Blum Recommended by Molly

At the turn of the 20th century, a variety of poisons were used by unscrupulous people for everything from personal gain to terrorism. In New York City, forensic science was just being developed, and pioneering scientists fought an uphill battle against corruption in law enforcement and the nation’s skepticism for the mysteries of chemistry. More than just an accounting of history, this book delves into the characters that drove the development of modern forensics and immerses you in the atmosphere and realities of the early decades of the 20th century.

Provence, 1970 by Luke Barr Recommended by Melissa

What did Julia Child, James Beard, M.F.K. Fisher, Richard Olney, Simone Beck, and Judith Jones have in common? They all liked cats. But this is not a book about cats. This is a book about food, friends and a gathering of great cooks in the South of France in 1970. If you read all the new books about Julia Child, don’t miss this one. These were her friends, fellow cooks, and food writers. This was her family. They bickered, fought, cooked, and drank. They created grand meals for each other to enjoy and evaluate. Provence in 1970 provided them with a refuge from their fame. We are privileged to get to peak in at the window and imagine we can smell the Christmas goose.
