WRITING IN THE MARGINS One of our goals at the Eisenhower Library is to make your experience using library services as easy as possible, including the process of finding materials. While our current computer system does allow you to find items, it could definitely be better. For about the last decade and a half, our library consortium, SWAN, has offered online searching to librarians and patrons. The current computer system allows you to do all of the basics and then some. However, with the increased use of mobile devices, social media, and ebooks, we have often felt that there must be a better option. We wanted a software system that was more intuitive, with better mobile options, and seamless integration of ebooks and digital audiobooks. We’ve heard these things from you and we’ve experienced the frustration of not having a more advanced system ourselves. Last year, SWAN staff decided to take a look at other library software systems, compare them to our current system, and see if we can do better. The answer was a resounding yes. Starting sometime in the spring of 2015, you will see a whole new SWAN. You will be able to search our catalog easily from your mobile device. You will be able to search the catalog from Facebook. You will be able to see and use our ebook collection in the catalog. Change of any kind, good or bad, is often difficult to get used to. We will do everything we can to make this major transition as painless as possible. We are more than ready to enter into this new era of library service, and hope that you will find the new SWAN as exciting as we do.

THIRD WEDNESDAY BOOK CLUB

Join us on the 3rd Wednesday of each month for our rotating book discussion groups. Come every month or just when your favorite kind of book is featured. It’s up to you!

The lives of the Los Alamos atomic scientists have been written about in great detail. What TaraShea Nesbit’s novel tries to do is imagine the community that was formed when the families of those scientists converged on a small section of New Mexico in 1943. No one knew how long their work would take, so they all just had to dig in for the long haul. At first, the novel seemed more a collection of notes typed up in preparation for the writing of a real novel, but the farther along I got the more convinced I was by the author’s approach to the complicated story she was trying to tell.

Gang Leader for a Day by Sudhir Venkatesh Recommended by Dan

Frustrated by the sometimes sterile nature of sociological research, Sudhir Venkatesh, a University of Chicago graduate student, went “rogue”. During the height of the crack epidemic, Venkatesh walked into the Robert Taylor projects to find out what was really going on there. He befriended a gang leader and ended up studying the gritty underground economy of the projects for nearly a decade. Venkatesh introduces a colorful cast of characters trying to survive in one of Chicago’s darkest times.

Readers of contemporary detective fiction looking to experiment with the world of comics should check out Greg Rucka’s graphic novel series starring Dex Parios, a down-on-her-luck private detective based in Portland, Oregon. With pitch-perfect, neonoir, atmospheric art by Mathew Southworth, both volumes of Stumptown follow Dex as she tangles with small-time criminals to trace down missing granddaughters and stolen guitars. Fans of Dennis Lehane and Robert B. Parker, or of TV shows like the Rockford Files, will find something to love in the hazy mysteries and colorful supporting cast.

When Maya’s father found Betty’s book in a thrift store, Maya wasn’t sure the advice was for her, but she decided to try it for a month anyway. That month morphed into a year, and Maya kept a journal documenting her progress. By the end of that year? Maya found out that people were more alike than different, and that most people really did want to be friends.

In Watch Dogs, you play Aiden Pearce, an anarchist hacktivist who fights criminals, the government and corporations, primarily using his smartphone. Ubisoft lets you customize your gameplay - you have missions and there are mini-games, but you can also just wander around exploring, being a vigilante or causing mayhem. Set in “the French-Canadian interpretation of Chicago”, you may notice that the Loop is depicted as an island and that there are mountains in the distance… Nevertheless, this is a solid shooter game that lets you set the pace and tone.

Seventeen tales are retold by comic artists. The majority are classics from the Brothers Grimm or other European origins, but some more obscure tales are included. The art and tone vary wildly; some stories are darker, some are funnier. I enjoyed reading them one at a time instead of in sequence. Many of the artists are well-known indie comic names but others are familiar from their work with children’s books (Fashion Kitty, Smile, A Series of Unfortunate Events). My favorite is the wordless and hilarious retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Many include twists on the original tale or surprising details, such as the burly female woodcutter who saves granny from the wolf’s belly. This graphic novel will likely appeal to Kids aged 6 to 12 who have some familiarity with classic fairy tales.

1000 Books Before Kindergarten (Starts September 1, 2014) Ages: Birth through age 5

Blu-ray

In addition to the tens of thousands of DVDs available at Eisenhower, now you’ll be able to borrow Blu-ray discs! Designed as the successor to the DVD, the Blu-ray disc is capable of holding much higher resolution video. To take advantage of this, we’re developing our Blu-ray collection to include the most visually stunning movies, such as Avatar and Gravity and restored classics like The Third Man. Don’t worry if you don’t have a Blu-ray player, any movies added to the Blu-ray collection will also be available on standard DVD.

Get a jump start on reading to your little one with our new program, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten. Sign up at the library for your book log and, for every 100 books you read together, you and your child will get a special sticker and bookmark. After you reach 1000 books you’ll receive a special certificate of completion. Open to all children who have not yet enrolled in Kindergarten.

Baby’s First Book Bag

Are you an expectant parent or grandparent? Do you have a child or grandchild 17 months or younger? The Eisenhower Library would like to welcome the newest member of your family by providing your child with his or her first book bag. The book bag will include goodies to encourage your little one’s love of reading. Please stop by Kids World with your Eisenhower Library card and the child’s name or due date to receive your bag. One bag per child please. Bags are available to residents of Norridge and Harwood Heights.

Veterans Photo Wall & Breakfast Are you or were you a member of the U.S. Armed Forces? Do you have a family member or friend who currently is serving or once served in the military? Consider submitting a photo of that person to Eisenhower’s Veterans Photo Wall. Pick up a submission form at any library service desk between October 1st and November 11th. The photos will be on display in Kids World throughout the month of November and will be added to our book of local veteran information. And don’t forget to register for our annual breakfast for veterans and their spouses on Tuesday, November 11th. After breakfast at the library, meet at the Norridge Veterans Memorial for a short program honoring our servicemen and women. Let us know you’re coming by calling 708-867-2298. Do you love your tablet, smartphone, or eReader? The Eisenhower Public Library will help you use all your mobile devices to their fullest potential with free ebooks, audiobooks, apps, streaming movies, digital magazines and more at www.eisenhowerlibrary.org/digitaldownloads.
