FROM THE DIRECTOR
WRITING IN THE MARGINS Even though this edition of The Explorer covers our summer programs, I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight a service that we have offered for years that doesn’t get a lot of attention. Beginning shortly after the first of every year, we offer tax forms and instructions.

FOR TEENS ONLY QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR LIBRARY?
Historically, we have been fortunate to receive free copies of forms and instructions from the State of Illinois and from the IRS. However, this year the IRS drastically reduced the number of forms available to us and eliminated free instruction booklets. In addition, over the past several years, Illinois has limited the number of state tax forms sent to libraries. We understand that tax season is stressful for many people and we wanted to make sure that our patrons had access to the forms they needed as quickly and as easily as possible. Most tax forms are available to print from the IRS and state websites, so we were able to offer two free copies of any printable form. In addition, we offered residents of Norridge and Harwood Heights one free copy of any set of instructions. We also helped people download forms and instruction books to flash drives whenever possible in order to save on the cost of printing. Each year, we see residents of Norridge and Harwood Heights who have never visited the library come in for tax forms. We want to make sure that their first experience is a good one while continuing to provide our regular visitors with the best possible service. We promise that we won’t let something like the IRS stand in our way.

Explore... The New Library Catalog This April, after a lengthy research period, we, along with the 77 libraries that make up the SWAN library consortium, are finally ready to unveil our new library catalog system, giving you the best possible service. This new computer system, Enterprise, brings some highly in-demand features to your fingertips and enhances the user experience by allowing for more intuitive catalog searching, offering eBook and online resource integration, and providing more options for communication. With catalog searches in the new system, you will receive results the way you expect, resembling familiar and popular internet search engines. The additions of spelling correction, search suggestions, and title recommendations as-you-type, make searching the catalog easier and more intuitive. In addition, our collection of eBooks, downloadable audio books, magazines, journal articles, and more are available with a single search, making it easier for you to explore and enjoy our digital content directly from the catalog, with a single login.
A WHOLE NEW LIBRARY CATALOG
The new system offers a new level of convenience by allowing you to choose how you want to receive communications from the library. When items are ready for pickup or you have a due date approaching, we will be able to notify you by telephone, email, or now, text messaging. In addition, these notices are available in a variety of languages. Logging into your account will be easier with just your library card bar code number and a Personal Identification Number. Your PIN will default to the last four digits of your phone number so you may need to confirm that we have your correct and up-todate contact information in our system. For the sake of security, after first logging in, you will be able to change the PIN to any number you choose. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you need assistance with the new catalog, we will be happy to help. Our staff is trained to ease the transition; instructional bookmarks and Quick Start Guides are available; and online assistance is only a click away at new.swanlibraries.net.
Better Search Results Email, Phone, and Text Choose the method of communication that is most convenient for you.
No catalog access April 11th - 14th during updates. eBook and research databases may also be unavailable.
Multiple Languages Ask at a library service desk to confirm that your contact information is accurate and up-to-date.
The catalog and notifications will be available in a variety of languages.

Ambitious journalist, Jonno tries to unearth the horror while wandering drifter, T.K. fights to keep his family safe. NDATIONS The Theory of Everything Recommended by Elias
This Oscar-nominated biopic brings us inside the life of Stephen Hawking, theoretical physicist and cosmologist. While a graduate student at Cambridge University, Hawking begins to experience difficulty controlling his extremities before ultimately being diagnosed with ALS, the motor-neuron disease commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Although the film does well in demonstrating the day-to-day challenges he faced while developing his theories about the universe, it really shines when dealing with the affects a debilitating disease can have on family members; in this case Hawking’s wife Jane, who’s tasked with caring for Stephen and raising their children while trying to continue her education and begin her career.
The Hundred-Foot Journey Recommended by Becca
Based on the novel, by Richard C. Morais, The Hundred-Foot Journey tells a coming-of-age story from the perspective of a young Indian man named Hassan. He and his family leave the UK in search of a new life. When their van breaks down in a small French town, they decide to open an Indian restaurant... directly across the street from the town’s acclaimed Michelin-starred restaurant. This movie is heartwarming and spirited, following the journey of a boy who proves his culinary talents through hard work and determination; recommended for anyone who doesn’t require explosions and car chase scenes for entertainment.

Tut: The Story of My Immortal Life by P.J. Hoover
Recommended by Celeste
Life is never simple when ancient gods get involved. One brief incantation and Tutankhamun became immortal. Awesome? Not when you are thousands of years old, trapped forever in the body of a fourteen-year-old. It means having to go through eighth grade - again. It means putting up with snarky classmates and not smiting them with supernatural powers, however much they may deserve it. Incidentally, his uncle was also given immortality. The very power-hungry uncle that killed Tutankhamun’s family and tried to kill him, too. A great start to a new fantasy series with comedic elements. Fans of Rick Riordan will want to pick this up. Recommended for grades 4 and up.
Clammy Clam by Chris Raschka
Recommended by Mary Jo This cute little book by funny guy Raschka will likely bring demands of “Again!” from your little ones. Especially if you use a funny voice and ham it up as the disgruntled narrator trying to engage Clammy Clam. Nothing happens in the book. But who knows? If you keep reading it over and over, maybe Clammy Clam will eventually say or do something. Anything. I recommend this picture book for readers ages 2 – 52, especially those who are easily amused.
