Agnieszka has always expected Kasia, her dearest friend, to be chosen, since she is the bravest and most beautiful. Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning Reviewed by Elias Recording the life and career of perhaps our finest documentary photographer, the latest entry in PBS’ American Masters series is a fascinating documentary. In it, we see Lange develop from a portrait artist to someone on the road, photographing the bread lines during the Great Depression, laborers during the Dust Bowl, sharecroppers in the South East, and interned Japanese citizens after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. The film also discusses her personal life and marriage to Paul Taylor, who hired her for the Farm Security Administration, where she took arguably the most famous photograph in American History, Migrant Mother. Interspersed with interviews with Lange, Grab a Hunk of Lightning is a must-see for anyone interested in photography and American history.

FOR KIDS

Teen Titans Go! BlackFire’s Back!

Reviewed by Naomi It’s round two for the Teen Titans when Starfire’s sister returns to Titan Tower. Blackfire is known for being bad and having a reputation to match. However, this time she’s turned over a new leaf and simply wants a friendly race between sisters. Is it time for some family fun, or is Blackfire up to something else? Enjoy reading with your favorite Teen Titans characters in this colorful graphic novel. This book is a great balance of action and storytelling for any fan of superheroes in general, especially for grades two and up. Parents will love the visual questions and prompts at the end of the story to help children develop their critical thinking abilities.

The Buried Giant

by Kazuo Ishiguro Reviewed by Melissa

As a fan of Kazuo Ishiguro (The Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go, When We Were Orphans) I was excited to read his new novel. This post-Arthurian story follows Axl and Beatrice as they set off on a journey to find their son. Knights and ogres and a mean-spirited dragon make me want to declare this a fantasy, but the author has balked at that characterization. I’d tell you more but there’s a fog clouding my thinking.

What’s a guy going to do? Bennett teams up with an intergalactic rock band on its let’s-play-anywhere-to-get-back-on-the-charts tour to save his prom. www.eisenhowerlibrary.org
