welcome to the carman country fair Dufferin Agricultural Society President Simon Reidstra

It’s that time of year. Volunteers have been hard at work planning and preparing for the 137th Carman Country Fair. I would like to extend a hearty welcome to all those visiting. Enjoy the fair, have fun and enjoy new things at the fair. Most of all enjoy making new memories. The Carman Fair is happy to announce that we have been named a Star Celebration Event. We are super excited and honoured to be given this recognition by the Province and we will work hard to make sure everyone has a positive experience at the fair. New to the Carman fair this year is the Manitoba Lumberjack Championship. This is the first of its kind in Manitoba. Professional athletes will compete against each other while being filmed by a TSN film crew. You don’t want to miss this event, it will be a blast! Special thanks to the Town of Carman, the RM of Dufferin and the Carman Chamber of Commerce for their partnership in making it possible for the Manitoba Lumberjack Championship to compete at the Carman Country Fair. With our partners we hope that you are as excited as we are about the event. The Carman Fair has always been a family event and this year we have been working hard to make sure that this year is no exception. There will be a kid’s play area set up in the B side of the arena along with our Leisure Avenue. Our volunteers have been working hard to make sure that the Carman Fair remains fun as well as educational. It is extremely important that we educate the next generation about agriculture and how much it is a part of our day to day life. Once again our midway Wonder Shows will be bringing rides for our enjoyment and in keeping with a family oriented fair will offer a special on ride wristbands on Family Day Thursday. This wristband special will only be offered on Family Day Thursday so take advantage of this special. Take the time to visit our Exhibit Hall featuring the beautiful workmanship of some of our local students and others that enjoy sharing their talents. Featured in the Exhibit Hall are amazing works of art, sewing, photography, baking, wood working etc. produced by the very talented people of our community. Livestock shows. This year we have been fortunate to have one of the best know beef judges in Canada. Welcome to Chad Haaland. It will be a great experience to watch Chad work. Please visit our livestock area and recognize the hours of hard work that the 4H members and families have put into raising their animals and providing the Carman Fair with one of the best known livestock shows in the province. Don’t be afraid to ask some questions here and there and show the future farmers that we appreciate their hard work. Joining the heavy horse competition will be an 8 horse Clydesdale hitch from Saskatchewan. The Dufferin Agricultural Society will be taking the Clydesdales as an entry in the parade on Saturday morning. If you miss the parade you will have a chance to see them on the fairgrounds. See you at the fair!

welcome to the carman country fair Town of Carman & R.M. of Dufferin

On behalf of the citizens and the councils of the Town of Carman and the Rural Municipality of Dufferin, we would like to take this opportunity to say welcome to our community and the Carman Country Fair. Our fair is a true community event that will entertain you, whether you are looking for the thrill of the midway or the energy of the stage showcasing various talents. Additionally, you will see our proud community come together with many volunteers helping put together a weekend full of entertainment for the whole family. You will be amazed at the execution, energy and entertainment value that the community is able to bring together. This year’s addition of the Manitoba Lumberjack Competition will make this an event to remember. Throughout the fair weekend, we would encourage visitors to explore the community beyond the main fair event locations and experience the place we call home. Enjoy a round of golf, go for a swim or explore our over 6 km walking path. We have an excellent community and we encourage you to come back again soon to experience more of what we offer. Best wishes for an entertaining weekend.

The Bros. Landreth FRIDAY

Twenty-seven years. Four bandmates. Two brothers. One album.

JULY 8, 2016 Grandstand 9:00 P.M. - 10:30 PM

Let It Lie, the debut release from Canadian roots-rockers the Bros. Landreth, is proof that there’s strength in numbers.

Anchored by the bluesy wail of electric guitars, the swell of B3 organ, and the harmonized swoon of two voices that were born to mesh. At first listen, you might call it Americana. Dig deeper, though, and you’ll hear the nuances that separate The Bros. Landreth — whose members didn’t grow up in the American south, but rather the isolated prairie city of Winnipeg, Manitoba — from their folksy friends in the Lower 48. Where does the sound come from? Maybe it’s in their blood. After all, long before they made music together, siblings David and Joey Landreth attended their father’s bar gigs as babies. “Mom would take us in the basinet and stick us under the bar tables, and we’d fall asleep,” says David. “Dad was a working musician who backed up people like Amos Garrett, but his love was always songwriting. He’d play three or four sets at those bars, so we’d be at the gigs all night.” “We were always around music,” adds Joey, the group’s frontman and chief songwriter. “We had no choice! We were baptized into it.” As the boys got older, they began paying attention to the records their parents would play in the small, WWII-era shack that doubled as the family’s home. Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder and Little Feat all received plenty of airtime, with John Hiatt’s Bring the Family and Lyle Lovett’s Pontiac standing out as family favorites. The siblings absorbed those records, which spun tales of love, life and lust in the Bible Belt. Years later — after Joey and David had given up their gigs as sidemen to form their own group, with drummer Ryan Voth — the Bros. Landreth began drawing on that familiar sound, mixing the rootsy swirl of Americana with the bandmates’ own experiences up north. Let It Lie was recorded in a straw bale house in southern Manitoba, during one of the coldest winters in recent memory. Working with producer Murray Pulver, the Bros. Landreth found warmth in the songs that Joey and David had written at home, brewing up an earthy, earnest sound that has since drawn comparisons to the Eagles, the Allman Brothers and Jackson Browne. Eager to tip their hat to the man who gave the Landreth siblings their very first instruments, the band also recorded a version of “I am the Fool,” a song originally written by the boys’ father, renowned Winnipeg musician Wally Landreth. Wally even stopped by the studio to sing a verse on “Runaway Train,” a scuzzy, fuzzy rock song that mixes boogie-woogie guitars with two generations of bluesy, booming Landreth vocals.

Carman Country Fair 2016

Manitoba roots/country artist, Quinton Blair (or Q as he’s come to be known), is honest as a day spent on a tractor, and driven like the drifting prairie snow. He’s self-described as a troubadour, tale-spinner, songwriter, and people person. Imagine Steve Earle crossed with Dwight Yoakam, but without the burden of fame. Influenced by the likes of Rodney Crowell, Hayes Carll and Dwight Yoakam, his brand of strikingly diverse roots/country music casts a wide loop, and captivates audiences with witty stories and relatable songs. New EP Cash Crop released April 2016, with tour to follow. Blair’s wide understanding of country music suits him perfectly to the task of working the stages with the all-stars of both roots and mainstream country music in Canada. He has shared stages with Del Barber, Scarlett Jane, The Bros Landreth, and the likes of George Canyon, High Valley, Corb Lund, Emerson Drive, and more. He has showcased and performed at the CCMA’s, Manitoba Arts Network, OSAC, Dauphin’s Country Fest, Festival du Voyageur, Canada Day at the Forks, and Chinook Rodeo Association Finals. Named Manitoba Country Music Association’s 2015 Roots Artist of the Year, his blue collar approach to the music business has him pickin’ a guitar nearly every weekend, and has allowed him to play stages as far north as Nunavut and as far south as Tennessee, demonstrating his insatiable thirst for the stage. The authenticity of Blair shines through in the many formats in which he travels. Blair as a solo artist, relies on his guitar, witty stories, and keen ability to capture the crowd night after night. He is often joined by good friend Bill Western Jr (Nathan, Del Barber) on pedal steel, where the chemistry and musical backbone of this combination lends to an unpredictably charming experience. Through the summer months, Blair is most often seen moving his full honky tonk band back and forth across the prairies. Wrangling horses is in his blood, and has been a part of the Blair family for generations. His debut album Blues Man (2013) was written in a cabin in MB, where he would go once a week and it was so cold he had to light a fire in the potbellied stove just to keep warm. Blues Man was well received, and saw Blair tour from Kelowna to Halifax, and from Nunavut to Nashville. The new EP, Cash Crop, due for release on April 8, 2016, boasts elements of soul, heartland roots, country, and rock, and features Blair’s signature themes of agricultural, hurt and redemption. Cash Crop was produced by Murray Pulver (former founding member of Doc Walker) and features co-writes by Del Barber, Blake Berglund, and Clayton Bellamy (The Road Hammers). Summer 2016 will see Blair tour the new songs extensively. Get ready to belly up to the bar, buy a round, and experience some of the best honky tonk and soulful balladry north of Texas. www.quintonblair.com

Miniature horse SHOW Friday 9:30 A.M. MINIATURE show ring South of Arena B Miniature Horses are known as the “Horse for Everyone”. They are suited to young children as a first horse, to retired people as companion horses and of course to anyone who has a love for horses. Miniatures are known for their willingness to please and for being so versatile. Young children can ride them, and their willing attitude and intelligence makes them ideal for obstacle classes that are similar to the trail classes for saddle horses. Their strength comes as driving horses. A full grown miniature can pull 2 adults in a cart for a distance of 10 miles quite easily. Once again the D.A.S. is pleased to welcome the Miniature Horses to the Carman Country Fair. Be sure to come out on Friday, July 8, to get an “up close and personal” introduction to these tiny equine!

4-H lightHorse Thursday & Friday, July 7th & 8th SHOW RING #1 The Graysville 4-H Light Horse and Pony Club has been around since 1974. It was started to provide youth with education in leadership, teamwork, judging and many other life skills. “Learn to Do by Doing” has been 4-H’s motto since the beginning and is still going strong. Today there are 17 members in the Light Horse and Pony Club, ranging from Cloverbuds (starting at age 6) all the way up to Adult. We are a very active club throughout the year. Keeping busy with meetings, project books, communications and of course riding from Sept. to March. While April to August are filled with lessons, clinics, fundraisers, and fairs. Along with this busy schedule we try to keep involved with the community. Participation in the Carman Christmas Cheer, working at the Carman Craft sale and a visit with the residents of the Boyne Lodge have been a few of our highlights. This year we have had the fortune of receiving 2 grants. The Farm Credit Canada 4-H Club Fund that will help us with our achievement day, and the ‘Growing Forward 2’ 4-H Club Fund which we have used to purchase 2 beautiful banners to display the new 4-H logo. We hope to continue supplying our youth with many more opportunities through 4-H. We feel our club offers the tools needed to teach skills, leadership, compassion, and teamwork which will be a valuable asset to our future generations. Our club is hosting southern Manitoba’s only remaining 4-H only Light Horse Show. Carman is our home fair and we are excited about hosting this event. 42

The Manitoba Pennwoods Draft Horse Futurity The Dufferin Agricultural Society, in conjunction with The Manitoba Percheron Belgian Club, is pleased to present The Manitoba Pennwoods Draft Horse Futurity. This Futurity is an opportunity for some of the best young horses in the province to strut their stuff. The Futurity structure is broken into a yearling division, and a 2 year old division. The yearling division is judged in a halter, or line class. Emphasis is placed on an animal that has correct conformation and is sound on all feet and legs. Balance, breed type, form to function, smoothness of body parts, eye appeal and the action or movement of the horse is considered.

The 2 year old division is divided into 3 classes. A halter, or line class is judged the same as the yearling division. A rail class awards points to the horse driven in harness hitched to a two wheeled cart. The horses movement and response to direction from the driver are judged. The final class is a pattern, or obstacle class. Here each horse is hitched to a two wheeled cart and the driven through a pattern completing specific movements and actions. Each movement is scored as the driver maneuvers the horse from start to finish. The points awarded from each class are tabulated and a winner is determined. Come join us on August 20th and 21st, 2016 for the Manitoba Pennwoods Draft Horse Futurity, here at the Fairgrounds in Carman, ring #3. Carman Country Fair 2016

The Dorothy Lucking Memorial award for the director of the year was awarded to Gary Hooper in 2015. Gary joined the Young Men’s Section of the Dufferin Agricultural Society in 1960, and has been a member of the DAS since. He also served as president of the DAS in 1983-1984. For many years, Gary worked in the light horse section where his duties were to stage and manage this show. In this capacity, he was in charge of preparing the prize list, stabling, show ring preparation, as well as follow up, clean up and storage. Gary was also on the midway committee for many years. His committee involved booking the midway, preparation of site and liaison with the DAS. Entertainment committee benefited by Gary’s participation for many years as well. He attended the presentation of different entertainers to decide on which ones to book for the Carman Country Fair. He had to prepare advertisements, prepare stage supply, lighting, sound, and other needs and request for the entertainers. In 2002 he quickly had to organize funds, supplies and workers to replace the stage within 6 weeks after the savage fire that destroyed so many structures on the DAS grounds. Gary was the Manitoba Representative for the Western Canadian Fair’s Association, and served on that board as president for one year. He also attended Manitoba Association of Agricultural Society (MAAS) for a long time as delegate from the class A and B fairs. He also attended the annual meetings of the Canadian Association of Fairs and Exhibitions (CAFE) for many years and thus traveled across Canada to represent Manitoba fairs, and especially Carman Country Fair. Throughout his long association with the DAS he has witnessed many changes and the growth of this community event. Carman Country Fair 2016
